Vorig jaar is Eric Reuland (wetenschappelijk directeur van LOT van 1995 tot 2002) in Utrecht benoemd als faculteitshoogleraar Taal en Cognitie. Vlak voor de zomer van dit jaar is Eric 65 geworden, de pensioengerechtigde leeftijd. Eric Reuland zal echter de komende jaren officieel verbonden blijven aan de faculteit Geesteswetenschappen in Utrecht, als faculteitshoogleraar.

En bij benoeming als hoogleraar, met een nieuwe leeropdracht, hoort een oratie. En die zal Eric ook uitspreken, op dinsdag 20 oktober:

Taal en regels: door eenvoud naar inzicht

Voorafgaand aan de oratie zal op maandag 19 oktober en dinsdag 20 oktober in het academiegebouw een workshop zijn ter ere van Eric, onder de titel: Promoting Systems Interface

Op vrijdagmiddag 13 november 2009 vindt de veertiende editie van het Taalgala plaats. Het Taalgala is een jaarlijks evenement gezamenlijk georganiseerd door ANéLA, AVT en LOT. Tijdens het Taalgala zal de ANéLA /AVT dissertatieprijs worden uitgereikt voor het beste taalkundige proefschrift, en de LOT populariseringsprijs voor het beste populariserende artikel op het terrein van de taalwetenschap.

Het Taalgala vindt plaats in Utrecht, Kromme Nieuwegracht 47, Pietershof, Raadzaal.

Title? that’s nothing: the grammar of complementizer omission

It is often said that the English complementizer that is optional, but in fact its distribution is quite complex, and can be understood only if it is seen as the result of interaction among
several factors.

This presentation argues that omission of the complementizer that in English complement clauses is main clause “root” syntax in clauses which have dynamic discourse potential like that of a main clause: they are “quasi-subordinate”, as in Dayal and Grimshaw (2009). The clauses report content that is not already in the common ground (i.e. presupposed) and that report the holding or expressing of opinions. Following Grimshaw (2006) quasi-subordinate clauses are subject to both the well-formedness constraints governing main clauses and those governing true subordinates. In the grammar of the informal register, the constraint regulating the complementizer in main clauses dominates the constraint regulating the complementizer in subordinate clauses, and the complementizer is omitted. In the grammar of the formal register the other ranking holds and the complementizer is present.

It follows from this line of analysis that:
that-less subordinate clauses look like main clauses;
certain syntactic configurations never allow omission;
many semantic classes of embedding predicates don’t allow omission;
omission is impossible with high register predicates regardless of their meaning;
omission is strongly correlated with other properties of clauses such as the presence of 1stand 2nd person forms;
and omission is virtually absent from academic text

This paper presents data on epistemic and evidential markers in three main varieties and several subvarieties of Lisu, a Tibeto-Burman language with about a million speakers in China, Burma, Thailand and India. It is shown that the original system had a number of epistemic markers and a reported speech marker, along with various imperative and question markers, all in clause-final position. These markers have similar meanings in those varieties which have not undergone change. In some varieties and subvarieties, evidential systems have developed separately over the last couple of hundred years, grammaticalising verbs and redeploying some epistemics into evidentials.

The corresponding systems in closely-related languages show cognates for the reported speech marker, some epistemic markers and various other final markers, and for the verbs which grammaticalise into evidentials in Lisu. Some, such as Akha, have also developed evidential systems through similar pathways. However, it is clear that the direction of change is from epistemic to evidential, and that these developments are relatively recent and separate.

‘Word in Process’

In this talk I will discuss the process of interpreting, acquiring and producing words from an Optimality Theoretical perspective. Lexical knowledge does not consist of a list of form-meaning combinations. It is not the case that people have some sort of dictionary in their heads which links a word form to a meaning or to a set of meanings. I argue that the interpretation, acquisition and production of words are processes of optimization. This means that there is no fixed relation between forms and meanings but that the candidate form or interpretation that best satisfies a set of constraints of a varying nature wins.

In order to increase NIAS' visibility within the Dutch academic world and to enhance the scholarly image of the Institute vis-a-vis the universities, the Institute has established the 'NIAS Lectures'.

These are lectures, usually given by non-Dutch NIAS Fellows at Dutch Universities and research institutes. NIAS provides the following facilities:
NIAS acts as intermediary in inviting fellows
NIAS lectures will be announced on the NIAS website
NIAS reimburses fellows for travel expenses
NIAS reimburses accommodation costs with a per diem sum. In many cases such accommodation costs will also include an overnight stay.
The institute which invites the Fellow agrees to produce publicity in which it is made clear that the guest lecturer is a NIAS Fellow and in which attention is also paid to NIAS itself. This can be done by means of a brief text, supplied by NIAS and /or a link to the NIAS website.
A brief post hoc evaluation made by the inviting institution would also be appreciated.

Verkennende workshops NIAS
Nederlandse onderzoekers kunnen op ieder moment aanvragen indienen bij het Netherlans Institute for Advanced Study in de Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS) voor het inrichten van een verkennende workshop met Nederlandse en internationale deelnemers. De formule is flexibel in die zin dat de beschikbare middelen, tot een maximum van € 15.000 per workshop, ingezet kunnen worden om een collectief projectplan uit te werken, om een gezamenlijke publicatie af te ronden, of om een subsidie-aanvraag voor te bereiden. Afhankelijk van de opzet, kan een dergelijke workshop enkele dagen duren, maar ook iets langer. De Wetenschapscommissie van het NIAS beoordeelt de voorstellen. In het voorjaar van 2009 zijn reeds twee dergelijke workshops gehouden en een derde staat gepland. Er is nog ruimte voor twee nieuwe workshops in het najaar.

The Department of Cognitive Studies at the Paris Ecole Normale Superieure (ENS) organizes its seventh international Fall School in Linguistics (on the ''summer school'' model). The goal of this interdisciplinary Fall school is to provide exposure to linguistic theory, and to grammar based approaches to cognitive studies. Its content varies from year to year, but typically includes:

* General non technical introductions to contemporary linguistic research
* Intensive introductory courses to some core areas of linguistic theory or relevant domains
* Seminars and talks on current research
* Interaction between research in grammar and some related domains e.g.
Psycholinguistics of Acquisition or of processing, Neurolinguistics, Experimental Pragmatics, Philosophy of Language/Mind etc...

The Workshop on “Prosody and Meaning” will be hosted by the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, the Universitat Autņnoma de Barcelona and the Institut d’Estudis Catalans on September 17 - 18, 2009.

The goal of this conference is to bring together researchers working on the field of prosody and meaning. Recent developments in language research have increasingly put the spotlight on the phonological status of intonation and its relationship with meaning. This workshop is intended as a venue for exchanging ideas and methodologies and for stimulating discussions and collaborative work between researchers coming from different perspectives. The workshop will consist of invited talks by members of the network and outside the network, a number of selected talks, and a poster session.

The Barcelona workshop is co-organized by Pilar Prieto (ICREA-UPF-UAB), Gorka Elordieta (EHU), and Joan Peytavķ (U. Perpinyą – IEC). The workshop is part of the activities of the research network Forms and Functions of Prosodic Structure

This workshop is to be held in the frame of the PRELUDE project (funded by
the French ANR – Agence Nationale pour la Recherche), which is a joint
project of four research teams : laboratoire “Structures Formelles de la
Langue” (Paris VIII and CNRS), Institut de mathématiques de Luminy
(Aix-Marseille and CNRS), Laboratoire d’informatique de Bordeaux (équipe
Signes) (Bordeaux I, CNRS and INRIA) and Laboratoire lorrain de recherches
en informatique et applications (LORIA, Nancy). It will be hosted by the
CNRS center of 59 rue Pouchet, PARIS (17e).


“PRELUDE” stands for “Towards a Theoretical Pragmatic based on Ludics and
Continuations”, that is to say that a particular emphasis has been put
during all these years on the use of new formal tools coming from
Theoretical Computer Science and Logic in order to give new formulations
for language phenomena pertaining to formal semantics (logical forms),
pragmatics (dialogue, presupposition) and even argumentation (fallacies
and stratagems).
As indicated by its title, this workshop will be devoted on all aspects of
the formal study of dialogue and interactions: syntax of dialogue,
semantic, pragmatic and philosophical aspects.

Ce colloque a lieu dans le cadre du projet PRELUDE (financé par l’Agence
Nationale de la Recherche), qui est un projet commun entre quatre groupes
de recherche appartenant aux laboratoires : “Structures Formelles de la
Langue” (Paris VIII and CNRS), Institut de mathématiques de Luminy
(Aix-Marseille and CNRS), Laboratoire d’informatique de Bordeaux (équipe
Signes) (Bordeaux I, CNRS and INRIA) et Laboratoire lorrain de recherches
en informatique et applications (LORIA, Nancy). Il sera hébergé par le
centre CNRS du 59 de la rue Pouchet ą Paris (17čme).


« PRELUDE » est l’abréviation de : « Vers une Pragmatique Théorique basée
sur la Ludique et les Continuations », c’est dire qu’au sein de ce projet,
une emphase particuličre a été portée durant ces derničres années sur
l’utilisation d’outils formels venant de l’informatique théorique et de la
logique afin de donner de nouvelles formulations ą l’expression de
phénomčnes ressortissant de la sémantique formelle (formes logiques), de
la pragmatique (dialogue, présupposition) et mźme de l’argumentation
(sophismes et stratagčmes).
Comme indiqué dans le titre, ce colloque sera dédié ą tous les aspects de
l’étude formelle du dialogue et de l’interaction : syntaxe du dialogue,
aspects sémantiques, pragmatiques et philosophiques.

The CLA Workshop is located within the framework of the IMCSIT conference to create a dialog between researchers and practitioners involved in Computational Linguistics and related areas of Information Technology.

Workshop Goals

The Computational Linguistics – Applications Workshop was created in 2008 in response to the fast-paced progress in the area.

Traditionally, computational linguistics was limited to the scientists specialized in the processing of a natural language by computers. Scientific approaches and practical techniques come from linguistics, computer science, psychology, and mathematics. Nowadays, there is a number of practical applications available. These applications are sometimes developed by smart yet NLP-untrained developers who solve the problems using sophisticated heuristics.

Computational Linguistics needs to be applied to make the full use of the Internet. There is a definite need for software that can handle unstructured text to allow search for information on the web. According to the European Commission, Human Language Technologies are one of the key research areas for the upcoming years. The priority aim of the research in this area is to enable users to communicate with the computer in their native language.

CLA'09 Workshop is a place where the parties meet to exchange views and ideas with a benefit to all involved. The Workshop will focus on practical outcome of modeling human language use and the applications needed to improve human-machine interaction.

NWO Conference on Contact Zones of Empires in Asia and Europe : 27 February - 4 March 2010
The “ESF-JSPS Frontier Science Conference for Young Researchers 2010” will provide early career researchers from Europe and Japan with opportunities to explore jointly an emerging field of research. This conference seeks new approaches to common topics concerning social, cultural and political complexity on the fringes of empires in Europe and East Asia, namely, the Hellenistic and Roman, and successive Chinese empires. A special focus of the conference will be on interactions between empires and their peripheries, and on contact zones. The temporal coverage spans from the formative phase of the earliest empires in the concerned regions up to A.D.1000. The purpose of the conference is to seek new avenues for research collaboration in cutting-edge research, which is why early career researchers are particularly welcome.

Historische grammatica van het Nederlands en zijn dialecten

gedoceerd door prof. dr. Jan Goossens, emeritus hoogleraar historische taalkunde, dialectologie en middeleeuwse literatuur aan de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven en de Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster.
Jan Goossens is zonder twijfel een van onze indrukwekkendste en productiefste taalgeleerden. Werken van zijn hand met internationale weerklank zijn: Strukturelle Sprachgeographie (1969), Was ist Deutsch - und wie verhält es sich zum Niederländischen? (1971), Deutsche Dialektologie (1977), Sprachatlas des nördlichen Rheinlands und des südöstlichen Niederlands "Fränkischer Sprachatlas" (1981, 1988, 1994, 2002) en in samenwerking met J. Taeldeman en G. Verleyen/C. De Wulf Fonologische atlas van de Nederlandse dialecten (1998, 2000, 2005). Het hoofddoel in deze hoor-/werkcolleges is om belangrijke taalkundige verworvenheden in verband met het Nederlands en zijn dialecten in het bewustzijn van belangstellenden te doen leven, zodat ze er ook actief en creatief mee leren om te gaan.

In de eerste reeks van vijf lessen zal de historische fonologie van het Nederlands worden behandeld (in juni), in het bijzonder die van het vocalisme, van het Westgermaans tot de moderne standaardtaal. Er wordt begonnen met de toelichting van een aantal grondbegrippen van die fonologie. Vervolgens wordt de geschiedenis van de vocalen en diftongen in etappen (van Westgermaans naar Oudnederlands, van Oudnederlands naar
Middelnederlands, van Middelnederlands naar Nieuwnederlands) besproken aan de hand van talrijke voorbeelden, die de deelnemers in het etymologisch woordenboek van De Vries en De Tollenaere kunnen vinden. Het is de bedoeling dat zij zo actief mogelijk meewerken, wat door een afwisseling van uiteenzetting door de docent en gezamenlijke bespreking van het voorbeeldmateriaal bereikt moet worden. Daarbij wordt bijzondere aandacht besteed aan de structurele samenhang: op ieder ogenblik van haar bestaan vormt de fonologie van het Nederlands een geheel. Maar tegelijk is er aandacht voor de in de loop van de tijd groeiende diversiteit, die tot het ontstaan van een Nederlands dialectlandschap heeft geleid. Op een vergelijkbare manier, maar beknopter, zal de geschiedenis van het consonantisme worden behandeld, die ingewikkelder is dan men op het eerste gezicht zou denken.

In de tweede reeks komt de flexiemorfologie met de (o.a. syntactische) consequenties van haar geleidelijke afbouw aan de beurt (in oktober, november). Door de werking van de in de eerste reeks behandelde klankwetten krijgen de woorden nieuwe gestalten. Deze geven aanleiding tot analogieėn, waardoor het systeem in gewijzigde vorm kan blijven functioneren. Behandeld wordt vooral de verbuiging van de substantieven, naast die van de adnominale woorden, met de wisselwerking daartussen, die geleidelijk tot het ontstaan van een volslagen nieuw nominaal systeem heeft geleid. Een tweede complex vormt het werkwoord met zijn geleidelijke afbouw van oude, maar ook groei van flexieėlementen en met verschuivingen in de opbouw van de Nederlandse zin. In dit morfologische deel wordt de ontwikkeling eveneens met behulp van een periodisering onderzocht. Ook in de morfologie groeit geleidelijk de regionale diversiteit, waardoor
een Nederlands dialectlandschap tot stand is gekomen. Dit vertoont regionale vernieuwingskernen, die dat landschap een zeer specifiek Nederlands uitzicht geven.

One-day workshop on Quantitative methods in cultural history by NWO & NEWW, The Hague, November 20 2009
The NWO project and Huizinga Working Group "New approaches to European Women’s Writing" (NEWW) will organise a one-day workshop to be held on 20 November 2009, at the Huygens Institute The Hague. It will be the third of a long term series that allows researchers and graduate students to discuss their work, together and with invited experts.

The theme of this workshop is: Quantitative methods in cultural history.

It will be an occasion to continue discussions recently undertaken (in Dutch) at the Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in a symposium entitled: "Innovation in the Humanities: Technics or Theory?".

Keynote speaker: Franco Moretti (Stanford University VS), author of: Graphs, maps, trees. Abstract models for a literary history (London/New York 2005).

Other speakers include: Madeleine Jeay (McMaster University Hamilton Canada), Joris van Zundert (Huygens Institute) and other researchers involved in the NEWW project.

PhD-students using quantitative methods are invited to send a proposal for the afternoon session, which – to be sure – will not be restricted to discuss women’s literary history.

Your research and teaching will concentrate on the domain of Language and Communication, which focuses on the study of form and function of language use. It will be your responsibility to initiate and conduct innovative research for the Utrecht institute of Linguistics OTS, in particular in the groups Discourse Representation and Processing and Readability and Comprehension. You will raise external research funding, you will supervise PhD students and direct research projects.

You will teach both undergraduate and graduate courses. At the undergraduate level your teaching primarily concerns the programs Dutch Language and Culture, Communication and Information Sciences. At the graduate level, teaching primarily concerns the MA-programme Communication Studies and the Research Master programme in Linguistics. You will be expected to establish and maintain connections with colleagues within and beyond the faculty, both nationally and internationally. You will perform administrative and organizational duties at various levels within the Faculty of Humanities.

The candidate we are looking for is a linguist, cognitive scientist or communication specialist, with a strong interdisciplinary background, expertise and research ambition.

The graduate group "“Pragmatic Enrichment: Theoretical and experimental approaches"” offers 4 doctoral positions to work in a stimulating working environment in theoretical and psycho/neurolinguistic research. The positions are available from October 1, 2009 or shortly thereafter. The graduate group has been established as part of the university’s initiative “Pro Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften” and brings together researchers from the Department of English and Linguistics ( and the German Institute ( to work on different aspects of enriched composition. The speaker of the group is Prof. Joerg Meibauer.

We offer 4 doctoral positions for 2 years each, with a possible extension for another year contingent on future funding. Each doctoral position has a particular focus on theoretical, typological or experimental approaches to enriched composition. The members of the graduate group will work together closely and are expected to actively participate in workshops and international conferences. They are also expected to assume teaching responsibilities within the participating institutions (1 course/2 hours per week).

- to focus on theoretical aspects of enriched composition (semantics/pragmatics distinction, implicature theory), with the aim of formulating specific hypotheses for future experimentation (supervised by Joerg Meibauer). Prior experience in theoretical linguistics with a focus on pragmatics and knowledge of German is desired.

- to conduct ERP research on different phenomena of enriched composition at the semantics/pragmatics interface with a main focus on German (supervised by Petra Schumacher). Prior experience in linguistic theory with a focus on pragmatics and/or ERP research is desired.

- to carry out research on enrichment in one or more East Asian language(s) from a typological-comparative perspective (supervised by Walter Bisang). Experience with linguistic typology and knowledge of one (or more) East Asian languages.

- to approach typological investigations of enriched composition through ERP studies with a main focus on East Asian and/or South East Asian languages (supervised by Matthias Schlesewsky). Prior experience in Chinese, Vietnamese and/or related languages as well as interest in ERP research is desired.

Ideal candidates should have a degree in linguistics or a related discipline. They should have a keen interest in pragmatic theory, as well as in experimental work. The successful candidates will work towards a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Mainz on a topic related to the graduate group. Each position is granted a stipend of 1000 Euro/month.

The position
The European Social Survey ( is an academically-driven social survey designed to chart and explain the interaction between Europe's changing institutions and the attitudes, beliefs and behavior patterns of its diverse populations. Now in its fourth round, the survey covers over 30 nations and employs the most rigorous methodologies.
The National Coordinators of the ESS are the link between the national survey operation and the central ESS organization. The National Coordinators are responsible for the preparation, conduct, delivery and dissemination of the ESS in their country. For Round 5 of the ESS prof. dr. Kees Aarts has been appointed as National Coordinator of the Netherlands. In the context of Round 5, a number of separately funded Development Projects are being prepared. The vacant position involves carrying out one of these projects, focusing on the effects of the choice of sampling frames on core survey variables. The successful candidate will be required to carry out the Development Project under supervision, and to complete a PhD thesis of which the Development Project will be part.
The position also entails participation in the local ESS team at the University of Twente. Some teaching duties will be involved.

You have a master degree in Political Science, European Studies, Public Administration or a related field in the social sciences. You have a thorough knowledge of the methodology and techniques of empirical social research, as evidenced in your master thesis. Employment conditions
We offer a challenging position in a stimulating environment. The Amsterdam Centre for Language and Communication (ACLC) focuses on the description and explanations for variation in languages and language use. Despite their enormous variety, languages show a remarkable degree of similarity, which can be described in terms of a set of language universals. A key feature of the ACLC approach is that these universals are studied from the widest possible variety of perspectives, both descriptive and theoretical, in order to ensure that the findings are not accidental, but are truly representative of the basic parameters that govern the organization of natural languages. The ACLC includes both functional and formal approaches to language description and encourages dialogue between these approaches. Studies cover all aspects of speech and languages: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics - in a search for the Language Blueprint. Language typology, including that of creole and signed languages, plays an important part in the ACLC programme. Language variation in terms of time, space and context is also a specialisation. The study of variation in the different types of language user - from the child learning her first language to the adult second language learner including also different types of language pathology – is a clear focus.

The Meertens Institute is a research institute engaged in the study and documentation of the Dutch language and culture. A central issue is the role of language and culture in the development of social identities and group culture. The specific linguistic research conducted by the Meertens institute is called Variationist Linguistics. The research group Variationist Linguistics describes and investigates linguistic variation in the Dutch language area, primarily in the Netherlands. This does not only concern geographical variation (like for instance dialects), but also socially and culturally determined variation. The main goal of this research is to gain insight into the nature of linguistic variation, the linguistic factors playing a part in this, and the language-external factors (like age, gender, ethnicity, etc.) that cause or influence variation in the Netherlands. The research focuses on insight into the present-day situation. Diachronic research into language change plays a part in this, as well as sociolinguistic and formal linguistic research. The interaction between these three approaches is of essential importance too. The research group concentrates on variation in grammar (sounds, word formation and sentence structure).

The ACLC and the Meertens institute intensify their collaboration and jointly offer a position for a PhD whose research is interesting for both partners and who will be active in both research environments. The position is filled (in principle) per November 1st 2009. There are two types of application. You can apply:

Interested candidates should formulate a research project proposal that fits in with the research programs of Encoding Grammatical Information and Variatielinguistiek. The research project should combine theoretic modelling with linguistic variation (synchronic or diachronic) and/or language acquisition. An example of this type of research are the completed projects of the NWO-program Variation in Inflection (follow the links below for more information on these research programs) or the existing project Arbitrary Reference (see below in 2).

The European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information (ESSLLI) is organized every year by the Association for Logic, Language and Information (FoLLI, in different sites around Europe. The main focus of ESSLLI is on the interface between linguistics, logic and computation. ESSLLI offers foundational, introductory and advanced courses, as well as workshops, covering a wide variety of topics within the three areas of interest:
Language and Computation, Language and Logic, and Logic and Computation. Previous summer schools have been highly successful, attracting up to 500 students from Europe and elsewhere. The school has developed into an important meeting place and forum for discussion for students and researchers interested in the interdisciplinary study of Logic, Language and Information.

FOUNDATIONAL COURSES: These are strictly elementary courses not assuming any background knowledge. They are intended for people who wish to get acquainted with the problems and techniques of areas new to them. Ideally, they should allow researchers from other fields to acquire the key competencies of neighboring disciplines, thus encouraging the development of a truly interdisciplinary research community. Foundational courses should require no special prerequisites, but may presuppose some experience with scientific methods and general appreciation of the field of the course.

INTRODUCTORY COURSES: Introductory courses are central to the activities of the Summer School. They are intended to provide an introduction to the (interdisciplinary) field for students, young researchers, and other non-specialists, and to equip them with a good understanding of the course field's basic methods and techniques. Such courses should enable experienced researchers from other fields to acquire the key competencies of neighboring disciplines, thus encouraging the development of a truly interdisciplinary research community. Introductory courses in, for instance, Language and Computation, can build on some knowledge of the component fields; e.g., an introductory course in computational linguistics should address an audience which is familiar with the basics of linguistics and computation. Proposals for introductory courses should indicate the level of the course as compared to standard texts in the area (if any).

ADVANCED COURSES: Advanced courses should be pitched at an audience of advanced Masters or PhD students. Proposals for advanced courses should specify the prerequisites in detail.

WORKSHOPS: Workshops run over one week and consist of five 90-minutes sessions, one per day. The aim of the workshops is to provide a forum for advanced Ph.D. students and other researchers to present and discuss their work. Workshops should have a well defined theme, and workshop organizers should be specialists in the theme of the workshop. The proposals for workshops should justify the choice of topic, give an estimate of the number of attendants and expected submissions, and provide a list of at least 15 potential submitters working in the field of the workshop. The organizers are required to give a general introduction to the theme during the first session of the workshop. They are also responsible for the organization and program of the workshop including inviting the submission of papers, reviewing, expenses of invited speakers, etc. In particular, each workshop organizer will be responsible for sending out a Call for Papers for the workshop and to organize the selection of the submissions by the deadlines specified below. The call for workshop submissions must make it clear that the workshop is open to all members of the ESSLLI community and should indicate that all workshop contributors must register for the Summer School.

Lecturers and organizers are not paid for their contribution, but are reimbursed for travel and accommodation (up to fixed maximum amounts, that will be communicated to the lecturers upon notification). It should be stressed that while proposals from all over the world are welcomed, the School cannot guarantee full reimbursement of travel costs, especially from destinations outside Europe. Please note that in case a course or workshop is to be taught/organized by two lecturers, a lump sum will be reimbursed to cover travel and accommodation expenses for one lecturer; the splitting of that sum is up to the lecturers.

The local organizers would highly appreciate it if, whenever possible, lecturers and workshop organizers find alternative funding to cover travel and accommodation expenses, as that would help us keep the cost of attending ESSLLI 2010 lower.

EVOLANG 8, 2010, 14-17 April.
The conference welcomes substantive contributions relating to the
evolution of human language from any relevant discipline, including
Anthropology, Genetics, Population Biology, Linguistics, Psychology,
Primatology, Ethology, Paleontology, Archeology, Artificial Life and
Mathematical Modelling. Normal standards of academic quality apply.
Thus, submitted papers should aim to make clear their own substantive
claim, relating this to relevant scientific literature, and briefly
setting out the method by which the claim is substantiated, the nature
of the relevant data, and/or the core of the theoretical argument

There are two possible types of submission: Full Papers, which can have
a length of between 6 and 8 pages. Abstracts, which can be at most 2
pages long. All accepted submissions will be published in the
proceedings of the conference. All papers or abstracts accepted will be
allotted the same presentation length (probably 25 minutes plus 10
minutes discussion).

The dramatic changes that our media environments have undergone in the past years have profoundly impacted our daily lives. Notions of time and space have changed; boundaries between the public and the private have been blurred; and the meaning of closeness and distance in interpersonal relationships has been radically altered. This new, mediated world creates many opportunities for individuals, but also confronts them with risks and dangers. The fundamental question thus becomes how individuals participate in a mediated world. How do individuals integrate media technologies into their daily lives? How do they develop the competencies to be able to navigate in a mediated world? How do individuals negotiate their role as user and producer of information? How do they deal with the redefinition of important areas of social life ranging from politics and education to health and entertainment?

To address these and other questions, the Platform for Communication, Media, and Information (CMI) within The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) will organize a conference entitled “Participating in a mediated world” on November 27, 2009. The CMI platform has organized various successful workshops in 2008 and 2009 in which an agenda for future interdisciplinary research was developed. Moreover, the CMI platform is in continuous contact with NWO to establish an interdisciplinary theme program targeted at media, communication, and information scholars. In line with these activities, the conference “Participating in a mediated world” aims at bringing together junior and senior scholars from various backgrounds to get familiar with each other’s work; to learn from each other; and to discuss possibilities of future joint research efforts. It is the conviction of the CMI Platform that the opportunities and problems of participating in a mediated world can only be understood through the combination of different theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches. As a result, the CMI Platform invites communication scientists, media scholars, and information scientists to present their work at the conference. Presentations at the conference can include empirical or theoretical work and can be based both on research that has already been done and on work in progress. The presentations should fit in with one or more of the following four areas:
• Health and health promotion in a mediated world
• Political engagement and citizenship in a mediated world
• Cultural production and consumption in a mediated world
• Education and learning in a mediated world.

Na een korte onderbreking tussen 2003 en 2007 zijn de Morfologiedagen twee jaar geleden heropgestart als een tweejaarlijkse conferentie voor taalkundigen met interesse voor de Nederlandse morfologie. De Morfologiedagen worden de dit jaar voor de tweede keer (na 1997) georganiseerd in Luik.
De locatie van deze editie van de Morfologiedagen inspireerde ook het thema waarvoor we speciale aandacht vragen: de contrastieve morfologie. Papers waarin de Nederlandse morfologie wordt vergeleken met die van andere talen willen we hierbij aanmoedigen. Bij voldoende voorstellen voor contrastieve lezingen zal één van beide dagen als themadag worden georganiseerd.

An ESF Research Networking Programme is a networking activity bringing together nationally funded research activities for four to five years, to address a major scientific issue or a science-driven topic of research infrastructure, at the European level with the aim of advancing the frontiers of science. Key objectives include:

- creating interdisciplinary fora;

- sharing knowledge and expertise;

- developing new techniques;

- training young scientists.

A successful Programme proposal must show high scientific quality and also demonstrate added value by being carried out at a European level rather than by individual research groups at the national level.

After the successful first Junior Research Meeting for Applied Linguistics in Groningen in 2007, GAL (Gesellschaft für Angewandte Linguistik, Germany), Anéla (Association Néerlandaise de Linguistique Appliquée), and Vals-Asla (Swiss Association for Applied Linguistics) are pleased to invite budding researchers, graduate students, and PhD students to the “Junior Research Meeting for Applied Linguistics”. At this meeting the opportunity will be given to participants to present their work to colleagues, both junior and senior, in an informal and supportive setting. It will also offer the possibility to come in contact with other researchers in your field.

Meetings of this kind have already been very successfully organized by Anéla, the Dutch affiliate of AILA, for over ten years. The aims of such junior research meetings are to provide junior researchers with the opportunity to present their studies to the wider academic community and to receive valuable feedback at the early stages of their research.

In addition, this meeting wants to promote the international exchange of ideas and to facilitate networking between European affiliates of AILA. The meeting is therefore organized in close cooperation with the Dutch and Swiss affiliates of AILA, Anéla and Vals-Asla.

We invite junior researchers to submit abstracts for:

- presentations of on-going or completed research (20 mins + 10 mins discussion)


- presentations of raw data leading to discussion (60 mins)


- poster presentations.

We are pleased to announce the 8th conference of the Researching and Applying Metaphor International Association (RaAM), which will be held at VU University (Vrije Universiteit), Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from 30 June through 3 July 2010.
As an association, RaAM strives to advance the study of metaphor, metonymy and other aspects of figurative language, with a commitment to the application of metaphor research to 'real world' issues. In light of this, the theme of the upcoming international conference will be 'metaphor and domains of discourse'. The theme is intended to highlight the socio-cultural as well as the situational diversity of metaphor as manifested in, for example:

We are soliciting abstracts for 20-minute papers and for poster presentations. Abstracts should be no more than 500 words (excluding references). De Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) en het Landelijk Netwerk Vrouwelijke Hoogleraren (LNVH) willen de doorstroom van vrouwelijke wetenschappers in academia vergroten. Om vrouwelijke wetenschappers te ondersteunen met het verwerven van een hogere positie in de universitaire wereld organiseren NWO en het LNVH een speciale talentendag.

Tijdens 'Pump Your Career' kunnen vrouwelijke wetenschappers bijvoorbeeld kennismaken met rolmodellen en leren van hun ervaringen. Ook kunnen de deelnemers netwerken met mentoren, die ondersteuning kunnen bieden bij hun carričre of met Vernieuwingsimpuls-coördinatoren die tips kunnen geven over de VI, met name Vidi en Vici. Daarnaast zijn er een aantal workshops die handreikingen geven over hoe je als vrouwelijke wetenschapper hogerop kunt komen.

De talentendag is speciaal voor vrouwen werkzaam in de wetenschap: postdocs, universitair docenten en hoogleraren. Ook welkom zijn (universitaire) beleidsmedewerkers en beleidsmakers die zich richten op vrouwenbeleid.

Het evenement vindt plaats op donderdag 1 oktober in het Museum voor Communicatie in Den Haag. Deelname is gratis, inclusief lunch en borrel, voor wie aantoonbaar tot de doelgroep behoort. Reiskosten komen voor rekening van de deelnemers zelf.

More than a 1,000 researchers have already participated in the NWO Talent Days, since we have started organizing them in 2003. Most participants clearly indicated to have a need for a follow-up, with more in-depth and personalized information. We received a lot of positive and enthusiastic reactions from the participants, and also many requests for continuing with these Talent Classes.

In Fall, NWO organises 3 days of Talent Classes: on 22 September, 10 November and 8 December. More information about the Classes offered these days, will be available on our website:

These masterclasses take up one full day. The classes are in Dutch, unless indicated otherwise. Nick Clements Deceased on 30 August 2009
Nick Clements, research director CNRS with l' ILPGA (Paris) in the group LP (Laboratory of Phonetics and Phonology) passed away on Sunday 30 August after a long illness.

Nick Clements was a linguist theorist of great reputation, well-known in the field of phonology and also of phonetics.

In 1992, he joined the group of research in phonetics and phonology of Paris as a research director of CNRS.
His scientific contributions are extremely numerous:
- on the distinctive features,
- on the harmony of vowels,
- on the theory of the syllable,
- on the African languages (in particular syntax and sounds)
- on the relations between phonetics and phonology.

He also wrote many articles.

Nick Clements was particularly appreciated by his colleagues and all the scientific community for his serious and intellectual honesty, the originality of his ideas, the depth of his reflexions, his scholarship, his kindness and his humour.

Ses contributions scientifiques sont extrźmement nombreuses:

sur la théorie de la syllabe,
sur les langues africaines (en particulier la syntaxe et les tons),
sur les relations entre phonétique et phonologie.

Verruiming budget vervanging in Vrije Competitie Geesteswetenschappen

Vanaf heden zijn de mogelijkheden voor het aanvragen van een vervangingssubsidie binnen de Vrije Competitie in de Geesteswetenschappen verruimd. De Vrije Competitie richt zich op onderzoeksprogramma's met een overwegend geesteswetenschappelijke component, bestaande uit een beperkt aantal deelprojecten die een duidelijke onderlinge samenhang hebben en een samenhangend eindresultaat beogen, waarmee aantoonbare meerwaarde wordt bereikt ten opzichte van afzonderlijke uitvoering van de deelprojecten. Een aanvraag heeft een maximale omvang van € 600.000,-. Hiervan kan maximaal € 50.000 (was € 25.000) worden aangevraagd voor vervanging van de programmaleiding voor onderwijs- en begeleidingstaken als daaruit een of meer publicaties (waaronder een synthetiserende publicatie) van betrokkene(n) in het kader van het programma voortvloeien.
