Oproep LOT Populariseringsprijs 2010. Deadline: 10 september 2010
Aan alle taalkundigen in Nederland

LOT looft dit jaar wederom de Populariseringsprijs uit, ter stimulering van het vervaardigen van populair-wetenschappelijke bijdragen over een taalwetenschappelijk onderwerp.

De definitie van in aanmerking komende publicaties is uitermate ruim. Het bestuur denkt zowel aan speciaal voor dit doel geschreven bijdragen als aan reeds gepubliceerd materiaal - artikelen, boeken, cd-roms, video's, radio - en televisieprogramma's, websites etc. - met copyright in 2008 en 2009 (indien copyright van toepassing is). De bijdrage dient in het Nederlands te rapporteren over actueel taalkundig onderzoek en vervaardigd te zijn door een in Nederland werkzame dan wel wonende taalkundige. Bijdragen dienen de essentie van een onderzoeksvraag en het antwoord daarop toegankelijk te maken voor een ontwikkeld publiek dat niet specifiek taalkundig geschoold is.

De omvang van de LOT-prijs bedraagt 1000 Euro.

Iedere Nederlandse taalkundige onderzoeker kan maximaal één zelf geschreven nieuwe bijdrage ter beoordeling inzenden. Daarnaast kan iedere Nederlandse taalkundige een reeds gepubliceerde bijdrage van een collega (dus niet van eigen hand) voordragen voor de prijsvraag door de desbetreffende bijdrage gemotiveerd aan te melden. Bij voordracht dient vermeld te worden: Naam voorgedragene, titel bijdrage, adres voorgedragene, motivatie voordracht.

De inzendingen worden beoordeeld door een door het LOT benoemde jury die naast taalkundigen ook redacteuren van een dagblad of tijdschrift zal bevatten.

De uitslag zal bekend gemaakt worden op het Taalgala, een feestelijke bijeenkomst voor alle leden van LOT, AVT en Anéla, samen met het bekend maken van de uitslag van de AVT-Anéla dissertatieprijs. Het Taalgala zal plaatsvinden op zaterdag 5 februari 2011 in Utrecht.

De sluitingsdatum voor inzending/voordracht is 10 september 2010. Inzendingen / voordrachten kunnen gestuurd worden naar LOT, t.a.v. Ivana Brasileiro, Janskerkhof 13a, 3512 BL Utrecht of via e-mail naar I.BrasileiroReisPereira(removeme)uu.nl.

Expanding Identity to Handle Problems in Coreference Resolution

This talk addresses problems that arise from the mainstream categorical definition of coreference as ‘identity of the real-world referents’. It argues that coreference is best handled when identity is treated as a continuum, ranging from full identity to non-identity, with room for near-identity relations to explain currently problematic cases. This middle ground is needed because in real text, linguistic expressions often stand in relations that do not fall neatly into either coreference or non-coreference, which has led to contradictory treatment of cases in previous text annotation efforts. We discuss key issues for coreference such as conceptual categorization, individuation, criteria of identity, and the discourse model construct. We define coreference as a scalar relation between two (or more) linguistic expressions that refer to discourse entities considered to be at the same granularity level relevant to the pragmatic purpose. We describe coreference relations in terms of Fauconnier's mental space theory. We present a taxonomy of types of near-identity and show its validation by annotation.

This is joint work with a PhD student, Marta Recasens, and her advisor, Toni Martķ, at the University of Barcelona’s Linguistics Department.

Transfer and competition in first and second language development of low-SES 3-6 year old immigrant children in the Netherlands
Paul Leseman (Utrecht University)

The aim of the current study was to explain the early delays in first and second language of low-SES immigrant children by examining the effects of transfer and competition. The first and second language development of 58 Dutch, 46 Moroccan-Dutch, and 56 Turkish-Dutch children was followed from age 3 to age 6. The parents reported on the language input they provided to their children at home. Results of the multi-group latent growth analyses showed strong positive transfer effects of first language development on second language development, while controlling for the effects of working memory. These positive transfer effects were, however, counteracted by the negative effects of competition between the two languages for the scarce language input at home.


About ‘Language Learning Experience’. Some thoughts on multilingual learning and teaching

This presentation is meant to be a discussion of the contribution of E. Le Pichon- Vorstman’s Ph.D. thesis about the ‘language learning experience’ and its metacognitive implications. My discussion will be lead against the background of previous work on language development and bilingual education, especially Bialystok’s contributions.
Bilingual or plurilingual education tends to be recognized as a positive educational asset. Discussion is usually not related to this type of education per se but rather to the type of formula that should be practised. One of the major criticisms levelled at some types of bilingual education is that it aims at producing monolinguals in all the languages taught, i.e. it is marked by what is usually called the monolingual ideology. Crucial to this debate are the notions of linguistic and communicative repertoire and code switching. Bilingual repertoires are always in a state of flux, no language being dominant under all circumstances, at all times. Obviously code switching is clearly a normal feature of all bilingual communities. However, should it be a teaching device or practice in bilingual classrooms per se?
Le Pichon-Vorstman et al. contribution’s on the development of metacognitive capacities in multilingual children makes it possible to go beyond the technical issue of recourse to codeswitching in multilingual classes. I would like to discuss some of the avenues opened by this work for bilingual or plurilingual education.


Focus on children’s perspectives on migration and multilingualism. How Multilingual Chinese children's in Vancouver (Canada) picture themselves.
Daničle Moore (Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada) & Véronique Castellotti (Franēois Rabelais University, Tours, France)

The contribution will report on a qualitative study conducted with fourteen young Chinese children enrolled in French immersion in Canada, to explore their consciousness of their multilingual practices and simultaneous acquisition of three writing systems. Drawings and in-depth interviews constituted creative and age appropriate narratives to understand children’s experience of migration and multilingualism. We explored in particular how multilingual children creatively appropriate Chinese script, English and French for three purposes: [i] to gain voice and expertise, [ii] to mediate their experience of migration and mobility, and [iii] to reconstruct knowledge and negotiate new and multiple identities in their various socio-cultural settings, including both French and Chinese schools, families, local communities, and the larger Anglophone society in Vancouver. The aim of the presentation is two-fold: to present findings on multiliteracy, language use and third script acquisition, from the point of view of young learners; and to discuss the use of drawings and photographs in qualitative research to understand children’s own perspectives and experiences of migration and multilingualism.


Parental strategies and metalinguistic awareness in preschool bilingual children

In this presentation I discuss the development of metalinguistic awareness in the first stages of language acquisition by preschool bilingual children. Until now, most research of metalinguistic awareness has concentrated on older children (from approximately 4 years old). It has been shown that bilingual children are better in certain tasks requiring metalinguistic awareness than monolingual children (Ben Zeev 1977, Bialystok 1988, Ricciardelli 1992). This awareness is measured by asking the children to perform certain linguistic tasks which are supposed to require a certain degree of control and analysis on the part of the child. Bialystok (2001:126) describes metalinguistic awareness as a product of “the combination of attention and explicit mental representations”. This implies that some kind of conscious knowledge about language is necessary in order to reach metalinguistic awareness.
For small children in the first stages of language acquisition, it is difficult to claim something like ‘explicit mental representations’. Nevertheless, we find that small bilingual children are able to differentiate their two languages from very early on: they address their interlocutors in the appropriate language (although there is evidence of cross-linguistic influence in their utterances, see e.g.Doepke 2002). This capacity of differentiating the two languages shows that there is some mechanism or strategy at work that helps them to tease apart their languages and it is only plausible that a certain degree of conscious knowledge plays a role in this differentiation. It is possible that the educational strategies adopted by the parents of the bilingual children influence the degree of metalinguistic awareness reached by them.
I will discuss the results of a study of the development of metalinguistic awareness of four Romance-Germanic bilingual children between 1;10 and 3;4 years of age. These results show that parental strategies do play a role.

International Symposium and Workshop on Terminology for Europeans (and beyond), Leeuwarden, July 5-6 2010
Pre-congress International Symposium and Workshop on Terminology
(Leeuwarden, July 5-6, 2010)

On July, 5, i.e. the day before the 14th Euralex International Congress in Leeuwarden (The Netherlands, July 6-10, 2010), an international symposium on terminology will take place at the same location, followed by a workshop on July, 6 till noon. This Symposium will focus entirely on the role terminological centres (can/should) play in a multilingual and multicultural environment, which makes it a unique event for both practitioners and theoreticians interested in the field of terminology.

On the first day there will be ten presentations of 25 minutes each (20 minutes for the presentations and 5 minutes for discussion), followed by a plenary discussion at the end of the day. The full programme is listed below.

On the next day, july 6, Dr. Hennie van der Vliet and his colleagues of the Dutch Terminology Service Centre (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) will give a half-day workshop on how the Dutch Terminology Centre copes with the above issues, making use of the outcome of the day before. The workshop will focus on;
- a practical, realistic working method (Hennie vd Vliet, Dutch Terminology Service Centre)
- accessible (open-source) tools (Attila Görög, Dutch Terminology Service Centre)
- where to find resources and how to make use of them (Michel Verhagen, terminographer at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs)

The organisation of both the pre-congress Symposium and the Workshop goes under the auspices of NL-TERM (the Dutch-Flemish Association for Dutch Terminology; pres.: Prof. Willy Martin) in close collaboration with the Euralex Organising Committee.

The European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information (ESSLLI) is organized every year by the Association for Logic, Language and Information (FoLLI) in different sites around Europe. The main focus of ESSLLI is on the interface between linguistics, logic and computation. ESSLLI offers foundational, introductory and advanced courses, as well as workshops, covering a wide variety of topics within the three areas of interest: Language and Computation, Language and Logic, and Logic and Computation.

Previous summer schools have been highly successful, attracting up to 500 students from Europe and elsewhere. The school has developed into an important meeting place and forum for discussion for students and researchers interested in the interdisciplinary study of Logic, Language and Information. During two weeks,46 foundational, introductory and advanced courses + 6 workshops headed by some of the most prominent scholars in the fields are offered to the attendants, each of 1.5 hours per day during a five days week, with up to seven parallel sessions.
ESSLLI also includes a student session (papers and posters by students only,
1.5 hour per day during the two weeks) and four evening lectures by senior scientists in the covered areas.

In 2010, the venue for ESSLLI will be The University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Chair of the Program Committee is Valentin Goranko (The Technical University of Denmark), and Chair of the Organizing Committee is Vincent F. Hendricks (The University of Copenhagen).

DGfS-CNRS Summer School in Leipzig on Linguistic Typology, Leipzig, August 15 - September 3 2010
We invite advanced students (Ph.D. or M.A. level) in linguistics and related fields to attend this 3-week event in August/September 2010. It is co-organized by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sprachwissenschaft (DGfS), the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, the University of Leipzig, and the Fédération Typologie et Universaux Linguistiques (CNRS, Paris).
The Summer School offers courses in different areas of linguistics, which look at language from the point of view of linguistic typology (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, areal typology, sign language typology, language contact, language acquisition). The courses will be taught by distinguished linguists from Germany, France and elsewhere.
The summer school is of course also open to more advanced scientists who are interested in learning about typology.

A Germanic Sandwich 2010: Dutch between English and German A comparative linguistic conference, University of Oldenburg, September 17-18 2010

A Germanic Sandwich 2010 will be the third in a series of conferences in which Dutch is compared with its closest Germanic neighbours, English and German. Four years ago the first one took place in Berlin to commemorate the appearance of Nederlands tussen Duits en Engels (‘Dutch between German and English)’, a study by the renowned Dutch linguist C.B. van Haeringen. In 2006 (the 50th anniversary of Van Haeringen’s book) the conference papers were published under the same title. In 2008 the conference took place in Sheffield (a report on that meeting as well as presentations that were given there can be found here: dutchcentre.group.shef.ac.uk/sandwich.htm.

This third two-day conference will be hosted by the Department of Dutch, and the faculty of arts of the Carl von Ossietzky university in Oldenburg. It is a pleasure to announce the First International Workshop on Hemispherectomy. This workshop will be held in Utrecht, The Netherlands this fall, September 30 – October 1, 2010.
The goal of this workshop is to review 20 years of experience in cerebral hemispherectomy around the world addressing both clinical and scientific aspects of presurgical evaluation (including timing of surgery), surgical techniques, pathology as well as postoperative outcomes in areas of psychosocial, cognitive, language and motor development.
This meeting is the first workshop to merge neurologists and neurosurgeons with neuropsychologists, neuroscientists and rehabilitation specialists. We hope that the Workshop will bridge clinical knowledge with insights into cortical plasticity and reorganization from basic science.

Workshop Goals
The Computational Linguistics - Applications Workshop was created in 2008 in response to the fast-paced progress in the area.

Traditionally, computational linguistics was limited to the scientists specialized in the processing of a natural language by computers. Scientific approaches and practical techniques come from linguistics, computer science, psychology, and mathematics. Nowadays, there is a number of practical applications available. These applications are sometimes developed by smart yet NLP-untrained developers who solve the problems using sophisticated heuristics.

Computational Linguistics needs to be applied to make the full use of the Internet. There is a definite need for software that can handle unstructured text to allow search for information on the web. According to the European Commission, Human Language Technologies are one of the key research areas for the upcoming years. The priority aim of the research in this area is to enable users to communicate with the computer in their native language.

CLA'10 Workshop is a place where the parties meet to exchange views and ideas with a benefit to all involved. The Workshop will focus on practical outcome of modeling human language use and the applications needed to improve human-machine interaction.

Contributions are invited to the workshop Frontiers of Prosody to be held at Leiden University, 19-20 November 2010.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together research on prosodic variation and the role of prosody in speech processing, as well as to encourage cross-fertilization of ideas in research on prosody. We welcome the submission of work which uses behavioral and neuroimaging methods to address the role of prosodic information in production and comprehension, including individual variation and effects that can be attributed to typologically different prosodic systems. For instance, the following questions might be addressed:

1) How are different kinds of prosodic information (e.g., lexical stress, lexical tone, phrasal pitch accent, and intonational boundary tones) represented in the mental lexicon and encoded in speech production?

2) How do different acoustic cues contribute to the signaling of different prosodic categories? How are cues from different modalities (e.g., tonal cues and gestural cues) integrated?

3) How do word-level prosody and higher level prosody interact in the mapping of sounds onto lexical representations?

Job description

The PhD/postdoc positions are part of the NWO-funded Vici research project "The age effect in bilingual development: grammatical gender in second language acquisition and first language attrition", awarded to Dr. Monika S. Schmid. The program examines to what extent second language learners can attain fully native-like representations of grammatical gender, and what the role of their own language background and the age at which they started acquiring the L2 is in this respect. In order to shed more light on this question, migrants who have lived in an environment where a non-gender language is spoken are also investigated. The project will employ neurocognitive experimental techniques (ERPs and eyetracking) as well as more traditional behavioral measures (grammaticality judgments and free speech).

Een contrastieve (ver)taalstudie van het niet-prototypische agens in subjectpositie.

Een korte beschrijving van het project volgt hieronder.

Hiervoor zoeken wij een Master in de Taal-en Letterkunde: twee talen of een Master in het Vertalen of een Master in het Tolken of een Master in de Meertalige Communicatie, met als specialisatie Engels en Frans en/of Nederlands.

Het project duurt vier jaar en leidt naar een doctoraat (verplicht).

Geļnteresseerde kandidaten dienen aan volgend profiel te voldoen:

• scriptie in de (ver)taalkunde en een grote interesse voor taalkundig onderzoek
• zeer goede kennis van de drie betrokken talen (Nederlands, Frans, Engels)
• uitstekende studieresultaten kunnen voorleggen

Beschrijving project:

Predicaten die zowel met een subject als een object voorkomen, zullen meestal een subject hebben dat voldoet aan de prototypische agenskenmerken (wilsbeschikking, waarnemings – of perceptievermogen, causativiteit, beweging en onafhankelijk bestaan). Dat impliceert dat minder prototypische agensargumenten moeilijker in subjectpositie zullen voorkomen, zoals geld en l’argent in (b) en (d) respectievelijk:

a. EN: Money buys action and influence.
b. NL: ? Geld koopt actie en invloed.
c. NL: Met geld koop je actie en invloed.
d. FR : ? L’argent achčte (de l’)action et (de l’)influence.
e. FR : L'argent permet d'acquérir (de l')action et (de l')influence.

Talen blijken hier echter verschillende tolerantiegraden tegenover te hebben. Het Engels, bijvoorbeeld, is vrij flexibel en aanvaardt vlot niet-humane argumenten die minder of niet aan de Proto-Agenseigenschappen voldoen in subjectpositie zoals blijkt uit (a), maar de letterlijke vertaling van deze zin in het Nederlands (b) en ook het Frans in (d) is gemarkeerd en meestal wordt geopteerd voor andere constructies zoals in (c) en (e). Dit onderzoek wil:

1. Een vergelijkend overzicht maken van de structuren met niet-prototypische agentia in subjectpositie in de verschillende talen.
2. Een comparatieve analyse maken van de restricties die wegen op deze structuren en de syntactische en lexicale strategieėn die in de talen ontwikkeld worden om dergelijke argumenten toch op te nemen in de zinsstructuur. Daarbij wordt aandacht besteed aan 1) het type niet-prototypisch agens in subjectpositie en 2) het type werkwoord.
3. Een overzicht leveren van alle vertaalalternatieven voor niet-prototypische agentia in subjectpositie met een diepte-analyse van de correlaties tussen de taalkenmerken en de vertaalalternatieven.

“Dutch verb order variation in a broader perspective”
(Ghent, November 19th 2010)

Taal & Tongval is a journal on variation linguistics (i.e. regional, social, pragmatic and historical variation) in the Low Countries ( www.meertens.knaw.nl/taalentongval). The upcoming yearly colloquium will be held in Ghent (Belgium) on the topic “Dutch verb order variation in a broader perspective”.

Background
In the last decades, word order research into the distribution of the verb patterns past participle – finite verb (the so-called „green word order?) and the verb pattern finite verb – past participle (the so-called „red word order?) has become one of the classical themes of Dutch variation linguistics. From the fifties onwards, Dutch linguistics has proposed divergent language internal and external factors that help to determine the (in principle) free choice between both word order variants, such as:
- regional variety (dialect – standard language, exogenous language usage)
- stylistic variety (formal – informal, written – spoken, jargon)
- accentuation of the verb cluster and surrounding constituents
- morpho-syntactic analysis of the verb cluster and surrounding constituents
In the colloquium, we want to relate explicitly to this respected research tradition, where the choice between the red and green order variant in actual language usage is central. In most of the publications, however, the variable verb order has been studied in a relative isolation with an exclusive attention to the factors which determine the order in the dual clusters in Standard Dutch.

Suggested topics
With the conference, we invite participants who want to study the red and green word order in a wider descriptive and theoretical perspective:
(a) a wider syntactic perspective
How can the word order variation between two verbs be related to the word order variation within longer verb clusters? More particularly, how do the factors that determine the choice for the red or green word order within double verb clusters work in longer verb clusters?
(b) een wider regional perspective
How does the word order variation in the (double and longer) verb clusters in standard Dutch relate to the verb order attested in the Dutch and German dialects? How are the possible differences to be explained? Are the factors that determine the choice for the red and green word order in the standard language also important for the dialects? To what extent is there a continuum between the Dutch and German language area with respect to verb order?

(c) a wider diachronic perspective
How did the modern verb order variation in Dutch (and the German dialects) come into being? Is there an ongoing change in verb order? What factors in the history of Dutch could have contributed to the modern verb order variation?
(d) a wider theoretical perspective
Does the word order variation in the verb cluster pose a challenge to the Humboldtian principle of one form – one meaning? What is the status of the factors that determine the verb order in the syntax of Dutch? Do those factors also work in other domains of Dutch syntax? Can the issue of variable verb order be related to cross-linguistic patterns?

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

The University of Oxford will host the Ninth International Conference on Computational Semantics (IWCS-2011), which will take place at the Computing Laboratory on 12-14 January 2011. The aim of the IWCS conference is to bring together researchers interested in any aspects of the computation, annotation, extraction, and representation of meaning in natural language, whether this is from a lexical or structural semantic perspective. IWCS embraces both symbolic and statistical approaches to computational semantics, and everything in between.


TOPICS OF INTEREST

Areas of special interest for the conference will be computational aspects of meaning of natural language within written, spoken, or multimodal communication. Papers are invited that are concerned with topics in these and closely related areas, including the following:

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Two types of submission are solicited: long papers and short papers. All papers will be reviewed by the PC. Please refer to the
IWCS-2011 website for submission instructions.

Long papers
-----------
Long papers should describe original research and must not exceed 10 pages. They will be published in the conference proceedings and will have a full oral presentation of about 30 minutes at the conference.

Short papers
------------
Short papers (typically system or project descriptions, or ongoing
research) must not exceed 5 pages. They will be published in the conference proceedings, and will have a brief oral presentation (5
minutes) at the conference, followed by a poster/demo session for discussion.


PUBLICATION

The IWCS proceedings will be published in a printed volume with an ISBN number. In addition, all articles will be archived as PDF format in the ACL Anthology.

NWO-Talent Classes Fall 2010, 28 September, 9 November and 7 December 2010
Dear researcher,


More than 3,000 researchers have already participated in the NWO Talent Days, since we have started organizing them in 2003. Most participants clearly indicated to have a need for a follow-up, with more in-depth and personalized information. That is why we organize six NWO-Talent Classes each year as well. We received a lot of positive and enthusiastic reactions from the participants, and also many requests for continuing with these Talent Classes.

In Fall 2010, we will organize Talent Classes on 28 September, 9 November and 7 December. The workshops that will be held are:

9 november:

· Moving on in your career

· Negotiating

· Presentation

7 december:

· Media training

· Networking

· People, politics and power

· Funding



These masterclasses take up one full day. The classes are in Dutch, unless indicated otherwise on our website. If you don’t speak Dutch, but would like to participate in a Dutch-spoken workshop, let us know by sending an email to verdieping(removeme)nwo.nl. Indicate your name, email address and workshop of choice, and the organisation will do its best to respect your wish.



You are invited to participate. Here’s your chance to get professional training and advice against a reduced fee. Please check the website www.nwo.nl/indepth for registration and information.



Registration, fee and direct debit mandate
You can register to participate in the masterclasses from 26 May 12 p.m. onwards on www.nwo.nl/indepth. Please note that your participation is only confirmed if we receive your direct debit mandate on time! The registration fee is € 95.00.

If you wish to participate, we would strongly advice you to register as soon as possible, since the number of places available is limited and registration will be closed for fully booked masterclasses.


Value for money
Registration costs for the NWO-Talent Classes are low compared to other - commercial - training courses. Still, quality is guaranteed with the set up of the masterclasses. The masterclasses are supervised by professional trainers. Each expert has put together an interactive program of presentations, tests and assignments that help you find solutions for your challenges.



For whom?
If you’re a researcher at PhD or postdoc level you can register for one of the masterclasses. It is not required that you previously participated in one of the NWO-Talent Days.



Place and time
The NWO-Talent Classes will take place at NWO in The Hague. The Talent Classes will start at 9.00 and finish at 17.00 hrs.
