Van de LOT Bestuurstafel

Op 14 oktober heeft het LOT bestuur samen met de LOT directeuren vergaderd in Utrecht. We hebben Hans den Besten herdacht, die zijn hart verpand had aan de taalwetenschap in Nederland, en jaren lid is geweest van de LOT Redactieraad. We danken hem voor zijn inspanningen!

Het bestuur en de directeuren zijn blij met de organisatie van de Grote Taaldag op 5 februari 2011, en nodigen alle taalkundigen van Nederland uit om hieraan deel te nemen.

Een praktische mededeling betreft de verhuizing van het LOT bureau van Janskerkhof 13 naar het Transcomplex. Het gehele UiL-OTS verhuist, en LOT verhuist mee. We krijgen in de nieuwe situatie minder ruimte voor de opslag van boeken, dus we zullen de komende maanden proberen om oude titels terug te sturen aan de auteurs of hun instituut. Eventuele overblijvende exemplaren zullen worden uitgedeeld op de Grote Taaldag, dus wellicht is dat een extra argument om te komen?

Er is al een paar maal gesproken over deelname van Research Master studenten aan de LOT scholen. Nu mag dat ook al (voor studenten die minimaal 2 semesters MA onderwijs hebben genoten), maar als de plannen van Duurzame Geesteswetenschappen doorgaan zal ook de financiering daarvan netjes geregeld kunnen worden. Studenten kunnen dan 3 ECTS verdienen met deelname aan een LOT school (2 cursussen per week, 2 weken lang), en dat mogelijk ophogen door het schrijven van papers of andere aanvullende opdrachten (afhankelijk van de regeling binnen hun eigen universiteit). Wij hopen dat hiermee de LOT scholen nog aantrekkelijker worden voor de Research Master studenten!

Toch willen we niet alleen de jongste groep onderzoekers bedienen, we starten in januari voor het eerste met speciale Master Classes voor gevorderde PhD studenten. In de masterclass kun je in een kleine groep je lopende onderzoek bespreken met een internationale expert op jouw onderzoeksterrein. We hopen hiermee een mooie aanvulling te kunnen geven op het bestaande programma.

Over de financiering van de onderzoekscholen als zodanig is nu bijna een akkoord bereikt tussen het DLG (de letterendekanen in den lande) en LOGOS (de samenwerkende onderzoekscholen binnen Geesteswetenschappen). Als dat allemaal lukt is de financiering van o.a. LOT voor de komende 5 jaar goed geregeld. In het huidige voorstel blijft het LOT bureau in Utrecht.

De afspraken over een nieuwe drukker voor de LOT dissertatie serie worden nu definitief gemaakt. We hopen op een beter financieel plaatje, een snellere doorloopprocedure, en een echte printing on demand service. De kleur van de omslagen zal licht wijzigen met het nieuwe printproces, maar blijft zo dicht mogelijk bij de bekende donkerrode kleur van LOT. Iedereen die na 1 maart 2011 zijn/haar proefschrift laat drukken in de LOT dissertatie serie krijgt te maken met de nieuwe drukker. Tot die tijd blijven de huidige afspraken van kracht.

De Language, Brain & Cognition track van de LOT zomerschool in Nijmegen (zomer 2010) is goed bezocht, en positief geėvalueerd. We maken nu al plannen om in de zomer van 2012 opnieuw zo’n track te organiseren.. Met dank aan NWO voor de verleende subsidie!

De eerstvolgende LOT winterschool vindt plaats aan de UvA (van 10 tot 21 januari 2011). De registratie is geopend, dus schrijf je vooral in!!
De eerstvolgende zomerschool vindt plaats in Leuven (van 13 tot 24 juni). We zijn al druk bezig met de programmering, dus houd de informatie op de LOT website in de gaten….

De Grote Taaldag, AVT, Anéla, VIOT en LOT, Universiteit Utrecht, 5 Februari 2011
Op zaterdag, 5 februari 2011 vindt de eerste editie van de Grote Taaldag plaats. De Grote Taaldag is een initiatief van AVT, Anéla, VIOT en LOT waarbij drie reeds bekende evenementen samen worden gebracht: de Anéla / VIOT Juniorendag, de AVT TINdag en het Taalgala.

Tijdens het eerste deel van de dag worden de reguliere programma’s van de Juniorendag ( www.anela.nl/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=19&Itemid=104) en de TINdag ( www.hum.leidenuniv.nl/onderzoek/avt/activiteiten/informatie-tindag-2010) naast elkaar gehouden. Tijdens het tweede deel van de dag vindt het veertiende Taalgala plaats. Tijdens het Taalgala worden de eerste resultaten van het Taalcanonproject gepresenteerd – een project dat tijdens het vorige Taalgala geļnitieerd werd. Naast deze presentatie zal tijdens het Taalgala verschillende prijzen worden uitgereikt zoals de Anéla / AVT-dissertatieprijs voor het beste taalkundige proefschrift van 2009 en de LOT-Populariseringsprijs voor het beste populariserende artikel op het terrein van de taalwetenschap van 2008 en 2009. (Zie voor meer info hierover op de LOT website onder Popularisering). De dag wordt feestelijk afgesloten met een tapasreceptie.

Deelnemers aan de Grote Taaldag kunnen zich inschrijven voor de Juniorendag via Anéla / VIOT of voor de TINdag via AVT.

Inschrijvingsgeld is 15 euro voor reguliere leden, 10 euro voor junioren en werkzoekende taalkundigen, en 25 euro voor externen. Dit bedrag is inclusief lunch en koffie / thee de hele dag.

Voor de tapasreceptie wordt een eigen bijdrage van 10 euro gevraagd. Bij de inschrijvingsformulieren (Juniorendag en TINdag) kunnen deelnemers zich opgeven voor deze receptie. Opgeven voor de tapasreceptie is ook mogelijk door een e-mail te sturen aan lot(removeme)uu.nl tot 28 januari.

Lezingdoor Marcel Giesen over Speech and sign comprehension in children with a cochlear implant, UvA Amsterdam, November 11 2010
Geesteswetenschappen presenteert op 11 november...drs. Marcel Giezen.

Een cochleair implantaat (CI) is een elektronisch implantaat dat geluid omzet in elektrische pulsen die de gehoorzenuw direct stimuleren. Veel dove kinderen krijgen tegenwoordig een CI, en dat op steeds jongere leeftijd. Een CI maakt het voor dove kinderen mogelijk omgevingsgeluiden en spraak waar te kunnen nemen. Ook al is de akoestische informatie die doorgegeven wordt door het CI betrekkelijk beperkt in vergelijking met het normale oor, toch maakt de huidige generatie CI's het voor veel dove kinderen mogelijk om bijvoorbeeld muziek te beluisteren en een gesproken taal te leren. De variatie in uitkomsten tussen kinderen is echter erg groot.

Met de opkomst en het succes van het CI is er opnieuw discussie ontstaan over de rol van een gebarentaal in het onderwijs aan dove kinderen. Hebben kinderen met een CI nog wel gebarentaalvaardigheid nodig? Kan het aanbieden van gebaren aan kinderen met een CI hun gesproken taalontwikkeling afremmen? Dit promotie-onderzoek laat zien dat het aanbieden van gebaren geen negatief effect hoeft te hebben op de ontwikkeling van spraakwaarneming bij kinderen met een CI. Verder dragen vroege diagnose en implantatie bij aan een goede ontwikkeling van zowel de gesproken taal als de gebarentaal.

Over de spreker

Drs. Marcel Giezen studeerde Taalwetenschap aan de UvA. Sinds 2007 werkt hij aan zijn promotie-onderzoek Speech and sign comprehension in children with a cochlear implant. In 2008 ontving hij een Fulbright-beurs om vier maanden onderzoek te kunnen doen in het Laboratory for Language and Cognitive Neuroscience in San Diego.
Marcel wordt ingeleid door zijn begeleider prof. dr. A.E. (Anne) Baker.

Abstract
Geographical proximity between groups speaking different languages is a major factor likely to promote language contact and subsequent diffusion of forms and patterns. The concept of linguistic area is central to the notion of areal diffusion. But is this concept unitary? Our aim is to show differences between linguistic areas defined by areal features (whereby languages are in contact with each other), and linguistic regions defined by regional traits (whereby a shared pattern recurs across a scattering of languages within a certain geographical area, which are not in contact). Areal features are indicative of traceable history and contact patterns. Regional traits are found in a scattering of languages across a certain region. Examples are drawn from Amazonia, and Australia.

The Biology and Evolution of Syntax: A View from Cognitive Phylogenetics
Understanding the biology and evolution of language requires a highly multi-disciplinary approach. The use of comparative work on multiple animal species is increasingly being recognized as a central pillar in the study of cognitive biology and evolution, including the evolution of language. This approach, called "cognitive phylogenetics", starts by breaking down the feature of interest into its component mechanisms, and then studying similar mechanisms, whether homologous and convergently-evolved, in other species. After illustrating the power of this approach when applied to language with examples from vocal communication and social cognition, I will turn to the challenging problem of human linguistic syntax. Although syntax in its full sense appears unique to our species, multiple core components of syntax (including implicit rule acquisition, motor sequence learning, and pattern recognition of various sorts) appear to be widely shared, and both their evolutionary origins and neural basis can be profitably investigated using cognitive phylogenetics. Such an analysis requires some over-arching classification framework, within which issues of parsing and generative complexity can be adjudicated. I suggest that formal language theory offers the best available framework at present, although this should eventually be replaced by some more natural, neurally-based framework, once such a framework becomes available. I will illustrate the promise, and some pitfalls, associated with this approach by discussing some recent research comparing pattern-recognition in various human populations, and multiple animal species.

Coherence and cohesion in multimodal documents

In this talk I present preliminary results of an ongoing project on the discourse characteristics of multimodal documents. This is joint work with Christopher Habel, carried out under an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowship at the University of Hamburg.
A great deal of work in the last few years has focused on the relationships between text and material presented through other modalities, be it visual, audio, or a combination of the two. Research on document design and learning has been trying to elucidate what kind of impact multimodal material has on the reader. Much research has studied whether to use multimodal material or not, where to place it, and what effect captions or other verbal information surrounding such material have on the reader (e.g., Acartürk et al., 2008; Mayer, 2009).

Less frequently discussed is the nature of the relationship between graphical material and the text itself. The point of departure for this work is that multimodal documents, just like any other form of discourse, exhibit coherence and cohesion relations. In particular, we are examining coherence relations between text and graphical material (pictures, diagrams, figures and tables), and cohesive ties that establish cross-reference between the two modes. In order to understand and categorize the types of relations between figures and text, we are making use of Rhetorical Structure Theory (Mann and Thompson, 1988), and discuss whether RST relations are sufficient for describing these types of relations.
Ours is a corpus study. Because we believe genre constraints the types of figures present and the way they are introduced, we study three different genres: newspaper articles (New York Times), magazine articles in a scientific magazine (Communications of the Association for Computing Machinery), and scientific articles (Journal of Computational Linguistics). The corpus consists of about 1,500 pages of material, containing over 700 figures, tables and graphs. We show that figures stand in both presentational and subject matter relations to the text they accompany, and that cross-referencing varies widely across genres, with newspaper articles showing little or no reference to the graphical material, and scientific articles marking the reference to the figure explicitly in the text.

Brief biographical note:
Maite Taboada is Associate Professor of Linguistics at Simon Fraser University (Vancouver, Canada). She holds a PhD from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain), and carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Alberta (Canada). Her areas of research are discourse analysis, computational linguistics and systemic functional linguistics. Some of her current research projects are: cohesion and referring expressions in Spanish and English, combining cohesion and Centering Theory; structure of multimodal documents; evaluation and appraisal in text (and how to implement a system to perform automatic sentiment analysis).

Achtergrond
De voorbije decennia is het onderzoek naar de variatie tussen de werkwoordsvolgorde voltooid deelwoord – persoonsvorm (de zogenaamde ‘groene volgorde’) en de volgorde persoonsvorm – voltooid deelwoord (de ‘rode volgorde’) in de Nederlandse bijzin uitgegroeid tot een klassiek thema van de Nederlandstalige variatielinguļstiek. Vanaf de jaren vijftig zijn in de neerlandistiek uiteenlopende taalexterne en taalinterne factoren voorgesteld die de (in principe vrije) keuze tussen beide volgordevarianten mee helpen te bepalen, zoals

regionale taalvariėteit (dialect – standaardtaal, exogeen taalgebruik)
stilistische taalvariėteit (formeel – informeel, geschreven – gesproken, vaktaal) accentuering van de werkwoordcluster en omringende constituenten morfo-syntactische analyse van de werkwoordcluster en omringende constituenten. In het colloquium willen we expliciet aanknopen bij de onderzoekstraditie waar de keuze tussen de rode en groene volgordevariant in het taalgebruik centraal staat. In het gros van de publicaties is de variabele werkwoordsvolgorde echter in een relatief isolement bestudeerd met een exclusieve aandacht op de factoren die de volgorde in de tweeledige clusters bepalen in het Standaardnederlands.

Contributions are invited to the workshop Frontiers of Prosody to be held at Leiden University, 19-20 November 2010.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together research on prosodic variation and the role of prosody in speech processing, as well as to encourage cross-fertilization of ideas in research on prosody. We welcome the submission of work which uses behavioral and neuroimaging methods to address the role of prosodic information in production and comprehension, including individual variation and effects that can be attributed to typologically different prosodic systems. For instance, the following questions might be addressed:

1) How are different kinds of prosodic information (e.g., lexical stress, lexical tone, phrasal pitch accent, and intonational boundary tones) represented in the mental lexicon and encoded in speech production?

2) How do different acoustic cues contribute to the signaling of different prosodic categories? How are cues from different modalities (e.g., tonal cues and gestural cues) integrated?

3) How do word-level prosody and higher level prosody interact in the mapping of sounds onto lexical representations?

4) How are different types of prosodic information integrated and how do they interact with other linguistic (e.g. syntactic and semantic) and non-linguistic information in spoken language comprehension?

5) What is the time course of prosody acquisition/attrition as first and second language?

How do acquisition and attrition data shed light on brain plasticity?

Sleutels tot succes – Ontdek ze op 22 en 23 november
Voor docenten, onderzoekers, beleidsmakers, studenten, promovendi en bestuurders is 22 en 23 november dé gelegenheid om kennis te maken met succesvolle partnerschappen in hoger onderwijs en onderzoek tussen Nederland en Frankrijk. In 6 masterclasses belichten Franse en Nederlandse experts hun vorm van samenwerking. Het ontstaan ervan, de hobbels die men moest nemen, de waarde ervan en de dromen voor de toekomst. Vanuit verschillende vakgebieden: landbouwwetenschappen, geschiedenis, wiskunde, sociale wetenschappen, business studies en politicologie. Er is ruimte voor informatie-uitwisseling, discussie en het leren van elkaars ervaringen.

In de rondetafel discussie kijken 4 personen met de deelnemers en de experts van de masterclasses naar de volgende 10 jaar. Wat zijn hun en uw ideeėn daarover. Waar zijn niches? Waar zitten knelpunten? Waar liggen uitdagingen? De uitkomsten zullen we neerleggen in ons 6decahier thématique. Om u te blijven betrekken bij Nederlands-Franse samenwerking in hoger onderwijs en onderzoek.

Er is tijdens het avondprogramma ook tijd voor muziek van onder andere cellisten Karlien Bartels en Florent Maigrot en voor film geproduceerd door studenten van Franse en Nederlandse kunstacademies. U zult de jury zijn van een festival van superkorte films! Het affiche is speciaal voor ons ontworpen door studenten van de kunstacademie l'Ecole Estienne. Maxime Fittes won met de zijne de speciaal hiervoor opgezette wedstrijd.

Eindsymposium NWO Cognitie programma

Op woensdag 24 november 2010 NWO wordt het NWO-programma Cognitie afgesloten met een wetenschappelijk symposium in Grand Hotel Karel V te Utrecht. Het programma is in 2001 van start gegaan en heeft in totaal € 12,5 miljoen subsidie verdeeld ten behoeve van het cognitieonderzoek. Verscheidene wetenschappers uit het programma zullen op deze dag de resultaten van hun onderzoek presenteren. Daarnaast zijn Nancy J. Nersessian (Georgia Institute of Technology, USA), Wolfgang Prinz (Max Planck Insitute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences. Germany) and Eve Clark (Stanford University,USA) de genodigde keynote sprekers.

Publiekssymposium 'Een hoofd vol taal; Over meertaligheid', LUCL Leiden, 27 november 2010
Het Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL) organiseert op zaterdag 27 november een publiekssymposium over de vraag wat het leren van een nieuwe taal teweegbrengt in onze hersenen.
Een nieuwe taal leren kan iedereen, maar niet bij iedereen gaat het op dezelfde manier. Voor een deel ligt dat aan onze hersenen. De hersens van jonge kinderen bijvoorbeeld zijn nog volop in ontwikkeling. Is het goed om zo vroeg mogelijk te beginnen met het leren van een nieuwe taal, bijvoorbeeld Engels, of levert dat toch problemen op? Professor Sieneke Goorhuis-Brouwer heeft een duidelijke mening.
De Britse autist Christopher Taylor is niet bijzonder intelligent, maar kent wel 20 talen. Heeft hij een uitzonderlijk brein? En wat leert zijn talent ons over het brein in het algemeen? Professor Neil Smith leerde Christopher een 21ste taal. Wat gebeurde er?
We weten allemaal dat het leren van een nieuwe taal veel tijd en energie kost. Toch blijken onze hersens zelfs na 7 minuten al heel wat informatie over een nieuwe taal te hebben opgepikt. Professor Marianne Gullberg vertelt over het onderzoek waar zij aan meewerkte.
Wat betekent het eigenlijk als je zegt dat je een bepaalde taal beheerst? Professor Jan Hulstijn gaat daarop in én op de vraag hoe je taalvaardigheid kunt (of moet) meten.

Concluding colloquium International NWO-project Early Child Bilingualism: Bilingual first language acquisition or child second language acquisition?

CamLING2010, the Sixth Cambridge Postgraduate Conference in Language Research, Cambridge, UK, 7-8 December 2010

Robert Lowth Symposium, University of Leiden, 17-18 December 2010
2010 may rightly be called the Robert Lowth Year: on 27 November it will have been three hundred years since he was born “in his Father’s Prebendal house in the Close Winchester”, as he himself wrote in his brief Memoirs.

To celebrate this event as well as the fact that his grammar may be called the most important grammar published during the eighteenth century, the VICI research project The Codifiers and the English Language is organising a two-day symposium in Leiden, on 17 and 18 December.

Plenary speaker at the symposium will be Carol Percy, from the University of Toronto.

Biolinguistics Workshop, University of Groningen, January 7 2011
Associated with ConSOLE XIX, a workshop on biolinguistics will be held at the University of Groningen on January 7th, 2011. The biolinguistics research area focuses on the biology and evolution of language and aims to understand the unique ability and origin of human language. Research carried out within the field of biolinguistics has received considerable and increasing attention over the past few decades from researchers within various fields including linguistics, (evolutionary) biology, philosophy, mathematics, and neuroscience. The collaborative efforts within these scientific fields attempt to arrive at a deeper understanding of the origin, biology and evolution of the language faculty.

Graduate students not having defended a Ph.D. in Linguistics by September 13th are invited to submit abstracts relating to the topic of biolinguistics. The call is open to any subfield relevant to this matter, from theoretical linguistics to more applied research areas such as language acquisition and neurolinguistics.

De Grote Taaldag
De volgende TIN-dag wordt gehouden op zaterdag 5 februari 2011. De TIN-dag zal voor het eerst plaatsvinden tijdens de Grote Taaldag, een initiatief van AVT, Anéla, Viot en LOT. Tijdens deze dag wordt parallel aan de TIN-dag ook de Anéla-juniorendag georganiseerd. Aansluitend volgt het jaarlijkse Taalgala, waarop ondermeer de AVT-Anéla-dissertatieprijs 2010 uitgereikt wordt. Tot slot viert de AVT op deze dag haar 60-jarige bestaan, met een borrel en tapasreceptie.
De Grote Taaldag vindt plaats in het Marinus Ruppertgebouw op het terrein van de Uithof (en dus niet op de Drift!): Leuvenlaan 21, 3584 CE Utrecht. Omdat hier geen horecagelegenheden in de buurt zijn, worden de lunch en koffie/thee door de AVT verzorgd. Hiervoor vragen wij een bijdrage (€15 voor reguliere leden, €10 voor promovendi), die u aan het begin van de dag kunt voldoen. Voor de tapasreceptie wordt een aparte bijdrage (van €10) gevraagd.

Inschrijving
Om een goed beeld te krijgen van het aantal aanwezigen op de TIN-dag en de daarop volgende receptie is het belangrijk dat u zich van tevoren via de website van de AVT inschrijft. U kunt dit doen op www.hum.leidenuniv.nl/onderzoek/avt. Graag horen we voor vrijdag 21 januari bij welke onderdelen u aanwezig wil zijn.

Samenvattingen voor de TIN-dag
Ieder AVT-lid dat op de TIN-dag een voordracht wil houden, wordt verzocht op uiterlijk maandag 29 november aanstaande een samenvatting van maximaal 170 woorden te sturen naar a.de.boer(removeme)net.hcc.nl. Daarnaast geeft u aan: uw naam, de titel van de lezing, eventueel uw werkbetrekking en het globale deelgebied van uw onderwerp. Als u van plan of bereid bent uw lezing in het Engels te houden, kunt u dit aangeven met een Engelse titel en samenvatting in plaats van een Nederlandse. Uw samenvatting dient geschreven te zijn in ASCII of RTF/word. Leden mogen maximaal 2 samenvattingen indienen (1 als eerste auteur, 1 als co-auteur).
Als u geen bevestiging van ontvangst van uw samenvatting ontvangt, verdient het aanbeveling contact op te nemen met de AVT. Alleen bevestigde sprekers worden ingepland voor de TIN-dag. Mochten er meer sprekers zijn dan plaatsen in het programma, dan zullen de laatst ontvangen abstracts opgenomen worden als “alternates”.
De lezingen op de TIN-dag duren 20 minuten, gevolgd door een vragensessie van 10 minuten. Ook deze keer wordt een bundel Linguistics in the Netherlands samengesteld. Sprekers kunnen na de TIN-dag een schriftelijke versie van hun lezing aanbieden aan de redactie, die op basis van referentenrapporten beslist of het paper voor publicatie in de LIN-bundel in aanmerking komt.
Het programmaboekje van de TIN-dag (inclusief samenvattingen) zal in de loop van december op de AVT-site verschijnen. In tegenstelling tot wat u gewend bent, zal er vanaf dit jaar geen papieren programmaboekje van de TIN-dag meer verschijnen.

The Tunisian Ministry of Higher Education is recruiting PhD holders for the positions of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Full Professor in British Studies, American Studies, and Linguistics for the academic year 2010-2011.

The teaching load for Assistant Professor is 11 hours a week and for Associate and Full Professor 6 hours a week. Appointees will also be required to supervise MA and PhD students and contribute to the academic life in their department.

For this year the Ministry offers: competitive salaries that take into consideration the candidates' qualifications, publications, and work experience; one return air-fare for every academic year; an accommodation allowance and a supervision allowance, both included in the appointee' salary; health insurance; and other incentives. Op zaterdag 5 februari 2011 wordt de jaarlijkse Juniorenstudiedag van Anéla en Viot georganiseerd tijdens de Grote Taaldag in Utrecht. Op de Grote Taaldag zijn de Anéla/Viot Juniorendag, de AvT TINdag en het Taalgala samengebracht. Studenten, net afgestudeerden en promovendi kunnen hier hun scriptie- of promotieonderzoek op het gebied van toegepaste taalkunde (taalgebruik, taalverwerving, taalonderwijs, taalbeheersing of bedrijfscommunicatie) in een informele sfeer presenteren tijdens een lezing of een posterpresentatie. Daarnaast wordt op deze dag de jaarlijkse Anéla/VIOT Scriptieprijs uitgereikt voor de beste scriptie binnen het vakgebied.

On Saturday, February 5th 2011, Anéla, the Dutch Society for Applied Linguistics, and Viot, the Dutch and Flemish Interuniversity Association for Speech Communication, organize their yearly junior study day (Juniorendag) in Utrecht. This year, it will be held in the context of the 'Big Language Day' (Grote Taaldag), which combines three already existing events - the Juniorendag, the AvT-TINday, and the Taalgala.

During the Juniorendag, graduate students, junior researchers and PhD students in the field of applied linguistics (language use, language acquisition, education, discourse, or communication) get the opportunity to present their work. In addition, the yearly Anéla/VIOT Scriptieprijs will be awarded to the best BA- or MA-thesis in the area of applied linguistics.

If you would like to present a paper or a poster on the Juniorendag, please upload your abstract, in Dutch or English, on linguistlist.org/confcustom/anelaj2011 before November 15 th, 2010.

CALL FOR PAPERS: WORKSHOPS, POSTERS AND GENERAL SESSION

Workshops, posters and individual papers are invited on any topic belonging to the field of linguistics. One person may submit a single-authored paper, a single-authored paper and a co-authored one (not as first author) or two co-authored papers (only one as first author). Note that keynote papers within workshops count as ordinary papers. Presentations will be 20 minutes plus 10 minutes question time.

All abstracts have to be registered and sent to the Scientific Committee by 15 January 2011.

GENERAL SESSION - WORKSHOPS. General session papers can deal with any topic in linguistics. Workshop papers take into account the topic of the workshop proposal, and are usually pre-selected by the workshop convenors before they are submitted to the scientific committee (SC). The acceptance of a paper depends on the quality of the abstract.

Abstracts will be read by three referees. Abstracts submitted to the general session and to the poster session will be evaluated by three members of the SC. Workshop papers receive two evaluations by SC members and one by the convenors. The threshold for acceptance is the same for general session, poster and workshop abstracts. The acceptance rate of the previous conferences was 60% for the general session.

As of SLE 2009 more than half of the presentations have taken place within the framework of thematic workshops. Workshop proposals should contain:

(i) A 1000 word description of the topic (including the research questions to be addressed) and
(ii) a provisional list of workshop participants and a short description of their topics.

We encourage workshop convenors to distribute an open call for papers on the LinguistList (announce your cfp as a session of SLE 2011) and other fora. The deadline for the submission of workshop proposals is 15 November 2010. Workshop proposals will be evaluated and ranked by the SLE Scientific Committee. Notification of acceptance will be given by 15 December 2010. After a workshop proposal has been accepted, the convenors will be requested to invite their participants to submit their full abstracts by 15 January 2011.

Since we want conference participants to be able to attend individual workshop presentations, SLE workshops have to be compatible with the main conference schedule. This means that the format of the workshops must be organized around 30 minute presentations (20 min. + 10 min. discussion). Workshops can contain 10 or 15 slots (corresponding to 1 or 1.5 days); each workshop ideally comprises:

1. An introductory paper by the convenor(s) or by a key-note speaker, which summarizes previous research, specifies the approach(es) to be taken and sets the scope of the papers to be presented.
2. Eight papers (1 day) or thirteen papers (1.5 day).
3. A slot for final discussion on the topics covered by the papers, methodological issues and questions for future research.

Further details can be discussed with the SLE Conference Manager.

POSTERS. The next SLE meeting will hold a poster session of an hour for both senior and junior researchers. Posters and oral presentations will be evaluated according to the same quality standards. In order to foster interaction, all other sessions will be suspended during the poster session.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION

Abstracts should not exceed 500 words (exclusive of references) and should clearly state research questions, approach, method, data and (expected) results. The abstract will also contain three to five key words specifying the (sub)field, the topic and the approach.

The deadline for all abstracts (for the general session, the poster session and the workshops) is 15 January 2011. Notification of acceptance will be given by 31 March 2011.

Submit your title through the Submit Abstract form where you can upload your abstract as an attachment. The abstract should not mention the presenter(s) nor their affiliations or addresses. Abstracts are preferably in Word or .RTF format; if your abstract contains special symbols, please include a pdf version as well.


PRIZE FOR THE BEST PRESENTATION AND THE BEST POSTER

There will be a prize for the best oral presentation by a PhD student, a prize for the best oral presentation by a postdoc and a prize for the best poster.

For current purposes, PhD-students are students that have not completed their PhD before the conference. Postdocs have completed their PhD not earlier than January 2008. A nominated paper may be co-authored; in such a case the nominee will be the first author.

Applicants are invited to mark the button referring to the prize when they register their abstract. On the basis of the ranking of the abstracts, the Scientific Committee will set up an internal shortlist with nominees for the prizes.

Members of the Editorial Board of Folia Linguistica (Historica) and the Scientific Committee will decide who will be awarded the first prize in each category, which consists of 500 euros and the 2nd and 3rd prize, which is a three-year SLE membership.

Registration will start from 1 April 2011 onwards. SLE 2011 keeps the SLE 2010 conference fees (see our website).

SOCIAL PROGRAMME

Logrońo, the capital of La Rioja, is located in the North of Spain, 336 Km from Madrid, 478 Km from Barcelona, 171 Km from Zaragoza and 137 Km from Bilbao. The local airport offers daily flights to the international airport of Madrid. Other important international airports are Bilbao and Zaragoza, from where you can travel to Logrońo by bus or by train.

Conference Theme: Language Documentation and Description in the Netherlands

The Netherlands is a leading place where languages with different degrees of vitality from all parts of the world are being documented, described and theorized about. However, this vast resource for the humanities, social and cognitive sciences has never been show-cased in one place before. To round-off the Endangered Languages Programme (ELP), a funding initiative of
the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), a two-day international conference is being organized at Leiden University on April 8-9, 2011, to provide a forum for putting this work on stage in conference presentations as well as posters. Linguists from all theoretical persuasions (based in the Netherlands) are invited to submit abstracts (maximum 500 words) for 20 minute presentations plus 10 minute discussion time at
this conference addressing language documentation and description and linguistic theory and typology based on empirical data from endangered languages round the globe. Contributions exploring the implications of empirical facts for theoretical models as well as those addressing
issues in the theory and practice of documentary linguistics are highly encouraged.

THE TOKYO CONFERENCE ON PSYCHOLINGUISTICS welcomes papers that represent any scientific endeavor that addresses itself to “Plato’s Problem” concerning language acquisition: “How we can gain a rich linguistic system given our fragmentary and impoverished experience?” Its scope thus includes linguistic theory (phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics), L1 and L2 acquisition, language processing, and the neuroscience of language, among other topics.

We believe that there are some types of studies which are suitable for oral presentations, and others, which are suitable for poster presentations. We would like to accept both types of studies at the Conference. The time for an oral presentation will be 20 minutes with a 10 minute discussion period (a total of 30 minutes). There is the possibility that some papers of outstanding quality will be given longer time slots (i.e., a 30 minute presentation with a 15 minute discussion period). Furthermore, the space allotted to a poster presentation will be 90 cm (width) x 180 cm (length).

The guidelines for the abstract submission are as follows.

Submissions that do not meet the guidelines will be rejected without review.

1. Only e-mail submissions will be accepted.

2. You may submit at most one single (sole-authored) paper and two joint (co-authored) papers.
Namely you may submit any of the following:
a. one sole-authored paper
b. one sole-authored paper and one co-authored paper

(The abstract, if accepted, will be photocopied to be included in the conference handbook and be placed on the TCP website.)
Format the files of your abstracts as follows (including bibliography):
a. The maximum length is 2 pages.
b. A4 paper size
c. Single-spaced
d. The font size should be 12 point. For any fonts used, a font file should be attached.
e. Do not add page numbers.
f. The top margin of the first page must be more than 30mm.
g. The other margins must be more than 18mm.

i. Put the title in the center of the top of the first page.

7. Please note that you cannot revise your abstract once it has been submitted.

We will notify you of the results of our review process via e-mail by January 12, 2011 at the latest. Those who are accepted as speakers will be requested to reply within several days if they are willing to present their papers at TCP 2011. Please let us know if you plan to be away from e-mail in early January.

In addition, we are planning to publish a volume of the conference proceedings. If your abstract is accepted, we will inform you of the details regarding this matter later. Most likely, you will be asked to e-mail us your paper as a MS Word and a PDF file attachment by mid-May 2011.

Unfortunately, TCP has no funds for financial assistance. Participants are expected to make their own travel arrangements.

CADE-23 is the 23rd International Conference on Automated Deduction,
the major forum for the presentation of research in all aspects of
automated deduction. Topics of interest range from theoretical
foundations to high-performance implementations in a wide variety
of logics and logical theories, with applications in areas like
- verification, testing and synthesis:
program analysis and verification, hardware verification,
systematic software and hardware testing, synthesis.
- (computer-aided) mathematics,
- natural language processing, computational linguistics,

Workshop and tutorial proposals for CADE-23 are solicited.

Computational linguistics has seen achievements in handling language at different levels of linguistic abstraction, from tokenization to semantic role labeling. Given a sentence, systems can more or less reliably determine who does what to whom when and where. However, texts do not always express factual information; on the contrary, language is often used to express uncertainty, opinion, evaluation, or doubt. Accordingly, computational linguistics has started to take into account the subjective aspects of language. There is now research that focuses also on determining who states that someone does something somewhere at a certain point in time (perspective) and based on what evidence (evidentiality), how certain someone is about stating something (certainty), the truth value of the facts being stated (negation), or the subjective evaluation of these facts (positive/negative opinion).

Linguistic phenomena such as modality and negation allow the expression of subjective aspects of meaning. Modality and negation are two information-level concepts that are well described from a philosophical perspective. Modality (Palmer 1986) is related to the attitude of the speaker towards her statements in terms of degree of certainty, reliability, subjectivity, sources of information, and perspective. It is related to other concepts like hedging (Hyland 1998), evidentiality (Aikhenvald 2004), uncertainty (Rubin et al. 2005), and factuality (Saurķ 2008). Negation (Tottie 1991, Horn 2001) is used to position information as a counterfact, a fact that does not hold in the world. Both modality and negation are complex linguistic phenomena that are challenging both from a theoretical and a computational point of view. Their complexity is due to the fact that both phenomena interact with each other (de Haan 1997) and with other aspects of the linguistic context, such as mood, tense, and lexis. While modality and negation tend to be lexically marked, the class of markers is relatively large and heterogeneous. For example, while negation words such as "not" are clear indicators of negation, other terms such as modals, adverbs, conjunctions and multi-word expressions can also express negation and subjectivity. Moreover, processing modality and negation involves disambiguating the markers and determining their scope.

The treatment of modality and negation is very relevant for all NLP applications that involve deep text understanding. This includes applications that need to discriminate between factual and non-factual information (uncertain facts, opinions, attitudes, emotions, and beliefs), such as information extraction, opinion mining, sentiment analysis, text mining, and question answering, as well as other applications that process the meaning of texts, such as recognizing textual entailment, paraphrasing, and summarization. Hence, the adequate modeling of these phenomena is of crucial importance to the NLP community as a whole. While the area is still relatively new compared to areas like machine translation, parsing or semantic role labeling, it is now growing quickly.


TOPICS

For this special issue we solicit full-length article submissions describing innovative and challenging research on aspects of the computational modelling and processing of modality and negation. We specifically invite submissions that take into account linguistic aspects of the phenomena and bring a theoretical basis to research on computing the factuality and certainty of the events in a statement, finding the source and evidence for the statement of a fact, and determining whether a statement has a truth value. We encourage submissions that have a substantial analysis component, in the form of an analysis of the task and data and/or an error analysis of the proposed method. Submissions can address aspects of either modality or negation or both, provided that they lead to an enhanced understanding of the phenomena, as opposed to a straightforward engineering solution.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

- Linguistically informed modelling of modality and negation for NLP
- Analysis of the relevant information/knowledge involved in processing modality and negation
- The computational complexity of processing modality and negation
- Novel machine learning approaches for learning modality and negation
- Processing modality and negation across domains and genres
- The interaction of modality and negation for determining the factuality of events
- The influence of the linguistic context on the processing of modality and negation
- Evaluation of systems: metrics and application-based evaluation

Stylistics is a field of study that is growing and developing fast. Its central concern is the way cognitive and communicative effects are achieved by means of linguistic choices. It therefore encompasses literary studies and linguistics as well as discourse studies. In spite of the shared, overarching definition of what it is, the field of study of Stylistics is highly fragmented. It mainly takes place within the boundaries of the various, more traditional, domains of study, e.g. literary analysis, rhetoric, (critical) discourse analysis, applied linguistics, etc. As a result, a comprehensive understanding of the wide variety of interests and foci of attention in stylistic studies, as well as exchange of knowledge between these research domains, is developing relatively slowly.

In recent years, successful attempts have been made to take an integrative, cross-disciplinary perspective on Stylistics, focusing on the shared research object: language use. An example is the expanding body of studies associated with the International Poetics and Linguistics Association (PALA). Especially fruitful has proven to be the developing area of ‘cognitive poetics’, a field closely allied with the theoretical framework of cognitive linguistics, which includes attention for contextual factors and the inherently ‘subjective’ basis of language in linguistic analysis. This Stylistics across disciplines conference links up with these developments and intends to offer a platform for exchange of ideas and to stimulate fruitful collaboration among linguists, literary scholars and discourse scholars studying ‘style’.

We invite participants from all relevant fields to participate in the Stylistics across disciplines conference to discuss the opportunities and problems regarding the development of Stylistics as a coherent and methodologically sound research discipline. We welcome papers on (but not limited to) the subject of:

* Possibilities and limitations of an interdisciplinary perspective: what can literary scholars learn from the way style is studied in linguistics or rhetoric, and vice versa?

* Opportunities and problems of a ‘linguistic stylistics’
* Methodological issues: qualitative (interpretive analysis) or quantitative methods (digital humanities, corpus stylistics) and different research methods (corpus analysis, experimental effect studies) in relation to various research contexts

* Development of theoretical notions and analytical tools especially suited for stylistic analysis
* Context-sensitivity of stylistic patterns and analysis: how does stylistic choice interact with contextual factors such as institution, genre characteristics, etc.?

The Stylistics across disciplines conference is organized by researchers from the NWO research project Stylistics of Dutch (Leiden University 2007-2012).

We would like to invite you to submit a paper to the SLaTE-2011 workshop August 24-26, 2011 (before Interspeech-2011 in Florence, Italy) Ca' Foscari University, Venice, Italy project.cgm.unive.it/events/SLaTE2011/

ISCA-SIG SLaTE
The ISCA (International Speech Communication Association) Special Interest Group (SIG) on Speech and Language Technology in Education (SLaTE) promotes the use of speech and language technology for educational purposes, and provides a forum for exchanging information ( www.sigslate.org).

WORKSHOP THEMES
The workshop will address all topics related to SLaTE, such as:
- Speech technology for education
- Natural language processing for education
- Spoken dialogue systems for education
- Applications using speech and/or natural language processing for education
- Intelligent tutoring systems using speech and natural language
- Development of language resources for SLaTE applications
- Assessment of SLaTE methods and applications

We especially welcome contributions on the future of Speech and Language Technology in Education, e.g. mobile learning, serious gaming, virtual reality, social media (networks), etc.
In addition, we would like to invite demonstrations of systems.

PAPER SUBMISSION
Full 4-page papers should be submitted before April 8, 2011.
Notification of acceptance or rejection of papers will be given by June 10, 2011.

Memories Michael Clyne
Michael Clyne has passed away, just a few days ago. Those who knew him will have been surprised and not surprised at the same time. He was a fragile man and he had problems with his health, at least as long as I knew him (since 1988). But it was somehow part of him and we could not imagine that he could really die. His death was a shock, also for his near colleagues in Melbourne who saw how his physical condition had deteriorated over the past months.
His death is a tremendous loss in many respects. It is difficult to express how important he was for the field. But what field exactly? Bilingualism, language contact, code-switching, language shift, sociolinguistics, intercultural studies, plus the fields I may have forgotten.
For decades he has written and edited an impressive number of books, monographs, articles and he gave numerous presentations on all those fields where he was a leading thinker. He was a learned man. It is impossible to indicate what his most important and best-known publications were. I would have to select something from a list of 22 pages. Also after he retired, he was extremely active in the field he loved. He could not live without it, and it was typical for him that until his last moments he was active as a scholar, until the very end. On the last evening before his death he gave a presentation.
I want to concentrate on the person he was, from my own personal experience.
Michael was able to read and write Dutch. In the sixties he had studied old-Germanic in Utrecht, at the same institute where I studied Scandinavian languages a decade later. Not much had changed in those ten years, such as the students of Frisian, who we shared our building with, and who had huge piles of bread for lunch, compared to us, modest old-Germanics and Scandinavists. Michael loved to share memories like this. And he preferred to do that in Dutch. His Dutch was very good, the kind of Dutch that was spoken in the sixties, archaic here and there and very, very polite. He loved to use it! I accommodated immediately when we talked or wrote to each other: my Dutch became extremely polite and friendly, too.
He arranged a visit to Melbourne for me in 2007. I was impressed by what he had organized: presentations in different universities and settings, he arranged a radio interview, a visit to a bilingual school, to the Victorian School of Languages, several get-togethers with colleagues, and he drove me round in parts of Melbourne that he thought I should see. I was invited for dinner at home by him and his wife. I felt privileged to have the opportunity to meet them both in an informal atmosphere.
Those who have known him may recognize some of the things I wrote above.
We offer our deepest sympathy to his wife Irene and daughter Joanna.
We will miss him, also here in the Netherlands, but we are happy that we knew this little great man and that he left us so much.

We would like to tell you that we edit the journal of Macrolinguistics (ISSN 1934-5755), with the purpose of informing scholars of Indo-European languages about the linguistic research of scholars of non-Indo-European languages, providing impetus for scholars of the Indo-European languages to develop new theories and contributing to the complementarity and interaction among linguistic researchers worldwide. On the other hand, we also very pleased to accept the high-quality papers in application of western linguistic theories and materials of non Indo-European language, which can hold a conversation with the western linguistics on a high level.

Considering your great attainments in the field of linguistics, we invite your contribution (English manuscripts are expected) for this journal. The general description of the journal and the table of contents of Issue 1 (2007)?Issue 2 (2008) and Issue 3 (2009) are mailed to you for your reference. If your paper is through the review, we can arrange it in the current issue or later issue, and two copies will send to you after publication.
