Abstract:

In this paper I will propose a minimal set of monovalent phonological features, among others based on the evidence coming from vowel harmony systems. Rooted in the approaches to features (or rather 'elements') within Dependency and Government phonology, I will suggest that we need exactly four elements, namely |I| ('high-front'), |U| ('back/round'), |A| ('low') and |?| ('ATR'). This proposal forms part of a broader theory ('Radical CV Phonology', RCVP; van der Hulst 2005) which organizes these elements into a segmental structure that distinguishes three gestures ('class nodes': manner, place and laryngeal). The proposed set of elements will be demonstrated by briefly analyzing several vowel harmony systems. In this model, harmonic pairs will be represented as ‘morphophonemes’, i.e. disjunctive representations that contain the harmonic element as a ‘variable’ element that needs to be licensed in order to be (phonetically) interpretable. It will be shown that licensing is local (i.e. holds between adjacent syllable heads or another between adjacent elements that the harmonic element is dependent, i.e. ‘parasitic’ on); cf. Ritter (1999). A crucial test for theories of vowel harmony is the proper treatment of so- called opaque and especially transparent vowels. In this paper I will return to an idea first suggested in van der Hulst and Smith (1986) and developed in van der Hulst (1988) which is that whether a vowel behaves transparently or opaquely can be predicted from the nature of this vowel and the specific element that is involved in the harmony: if the non-alternating vowel is incompatible with harmonic element, this vowel must be opaque. If, however, the element is compatible with the non-alternating vowel, this vowel can appear to be transparently (but it will be shown that the term ‘transparent’ is actually a misnomer). This approach, as will be shown, is crucially dependent on the specific set of monovalent elements that is being used. No other theory of vowel harmony makes this prediction. Rather, as far as I know, all other approaches predict (and are happy to admit) that any non-alternating vowel (whatever its relation to the harmonic feature or element) can behave in either way in one language or another. As might be expected, any strong theory faces empirical challenges (such as, in my case, the apparent transparency of /i/ in Mongolian rounding harmony). In this paper, I will examine the nature of such challenges.

How conditionals are different from causals

It is well known that conditional constructions may express conditional relations in different domains, such as the content domain (1), the speech act domain (2) and the epistemic domain (3) (Dancygier & Sweetser 2005).

(3) If the lights are on, they must be home

The different uses of if in (1)-(3) clearly parallel those of causal connectors and may likewise be described in terms of categorization of relationships between events, with the different categories corresponding to different degrees of subjectivity (e.g. Sanders & Sweetser 2009). In fact, the connection between p and q in a conditional construction (if p, then q) is often of a causal nature as well: in (1), the match will obviously be cancelled because of the rain and the ‘pragmatic’ use of if in (2) and (3) may be compared, for instance, to that of the Dutch causal connector want.
However, by focusing on the different kinds of relationships between p and q, a crucial aspect of conditionals is neglected, namely their argumentative function in discourse: conditional constructions typically function as a premise for a conclusion, which may be presented in the surrounding discourse but may also be implicit. In my talk, I will illustrate the role of this ‘intersubjective’ dimension by discussing different conditional constructions of Dutch, focusing on ‘insubordination’ with als (‘if’). The argumentative function of these constructions will be defined in terms of speech act theory as well as Verhagen’s (2005) notion of ‘argumentative orientation’.

De etymologische databank bij het Toponymisch Woordenboek: nieuwe inzichten

Op woensdag 27 april 2011, in de sterfmaand van Cornelis Kiliaan (1529-1607), zal de jaarlijkse Kiliaanlezing worden gehouden, die tot doel heeft een bepaald onderwerp uit de historische taalkunde aan een breed publiek te presenteren. De lezing vindt dit jaar plaats in het Instituut voor Nederlandse Lexicologie, begint om 14.30 uur en wordt afgesloten met een borrel.

Prof. dr. Jozef Van Loon (1945) is emeritus hoogleraar Duits en Nederlands aan de Universiteit Antwerpen en auteur van onder meer "Historische fonologie van het Nederlands" (1986), "Ontstaansgeschiedenis van het begrip Stad" (2000) en "Principles of Historical Morphology" (2005). Hij zal vertellen over zijn vervolgproject op het bekende Toponymisch Woordenboek (TW) van Maurits Gysseling. Dit woordenboek staat sedert 2007 geheel doorzoekbaar op het internet (www.wulfila.be/tw). Gysselings etymologieėn werden echter bewust niet in die databank opgenomen. Ze zijn niet volledig, er is geen literatuurstudie verricht en Gysseling zelf vond ze ook niet essentieel voor zijn woordenboek. Wel was het bij de makers van de databank van meet af aan de bedoeling een tweede databank te maken waarmee het TW ook etymologisch kon worden ontsloten.
Die werkzaamheden leverden ondertussen allerlei nieuwe etymologische inzichten op. Meestal brengen die "slechts" nieuwe informatie bij over lokale geschiedenis of afzonderlijke taalverschijnselen, zoals in het geval van namen als Arnemuiden, Duras of Valkenburg, maar niet zelden levert de nieuwe etymologie ook "spectaculairder" resultaten op die een nieuw licht werpen op onze vroegste vaderlandse geschiedenis, zoals in het geval van Brugge, Antwerpen, Oudenburg, Dorestat, of de Caesariaanse stamnamen Geidumni en Caerosi. Van Loon zal uiteenzetten hoe een concrete etymologie kan leiden tot nieuwe inzichten in de middeleeuwse landschaps- en cultuurgeschiedenis.

The Netherlands is a leading place where languages with different degrees of vitality from all parts of the world are being documented, described and theorized about. However, this vast resource for the humanities, social and cognitive sciences has never been show-cased in one place before. To round-off the Endangered Languages Programme (ELP), a funding initiative of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), a two-day international conference is being organized at Leiden University on April 8-9, 2011, to provide a forum for putting this work on stage in conference presentations as well as posters.

Op donderdag 21 april 2011 zal er in Utrecht een bijeenkomst plaatsvinden in het kader van het nieuwe NWO- en ZonMW-programma Begrijpelijke Taal. Fundamenten en toepassingen van effectieve communicatie. Dit interdisciplinaire programma heeft tot doel bestaande expertise op het gebied van effectieve communicatie, en de fundamenten die daaraan ten grondslag liggen, te bundelen en te vergroten. Bovendien heeft het programma de ambitie om de wetenschappelijke expertise op dit terrein beter beschikbaar te maken.

Het Begrijpelijke Taal programma is vorig jaar opgestart met twee kortlopende verkenningsstudies. Een daarvan heeft tot doel een overzicht beschikbaar te maken van bestaande kennis en tools, en de tweede is een toekomstverkenning naar de gevolgen van digitalisering van communicatie. De eerste resultaten van deze verkenningen zullen op 21 april gepresenteerd worden.

Tijdens de bijeenkomst op 21 april 2011 zal ook de informele lancering plaatsvinden voor de call for proposals, die naar verwachting op 1 mei 2011 gepubliceerd gaat worden (deadline 1 september 2011). Bovendien zal er alle gelegenheid zijn voor netwerken en het informeel bespreken en uitwerken van projectideeėn, zowel met wetenschappers als met mogelijke maatschappelijke partners.

Phonological influences on the McGurk effect
Explicit modelling of the McGurk effect within our model of Bidirectional Phonology and Phonetics predicts that the behaviour of the perceivers of combined auditory and visual cues depends on the structural constraints of their native language. Today I will present experimental results that bear on this.

Can you hear the difference? Vowel production in 8YO children with a cochlear implant.

Can listeners identify the speech of a 7-year-old child with a cochlear implant? Does the speech of a 7-year-old congenitally deaf child with a cochlear implant sound like that of any other 7-year-old, or is there “something different”? In this talk preliminary results of ongoing research will be presented.
In a first, exploratory study the research question was very straightforward: can listeners identify the speech of a 7-year-old child with a cochlear implant?
Short sentences produced by 7-year-old children with normal hearing (NH), congenitally deaf children with a cochlear implant (implanted in the first two years of life, CI) and hearing impaired children with a conventional hearing aid (HA) were recorded. These stimuli were judged in a forced choice task by three panels: a group of naļve judges who did not have any particular experience with children’s speech, a group of 1st and 2nd grade teachers with extensive experience with the speech of 7-year-olds, and a group of speech clinicians with extensive experience with children suffering from hearing problems and children with cochlear implants. The judges had to decide whether a stretch of speech was uttered by a normal hearing child, a hearing impaired child with a conventional hearing aid, or a congenitally deaf child with a cochlear implant.

The results of this exploratory study clearly showed that the judges were able to identify the NH children, but had much more difficulties in identifying the voices of CI and HA children. Hence, there must be “something different” in the speech of these three groups of children.
As a first step in finding out what that “something different” may be, we assessed the production of the 12 steady-state vowels of Belgian Dutch produced by the same 7-year-olds. The acoustic characteristics of the children’s vowel productions were measured, so as to chart out the vowel spaces of the three groups. Hence, we answer the question: are there objectively measurable differences between the vowel spaces of these three groups?

Sources of variability in the acquisition of spoken German by young children with cochlear implants
One of the most outstanding characteristics of spoken language development in children with cochlear implants is its enormous variability. The better progress of earlier implanted children is often attributed to optimal use of a “sensitive phase” for language learning. However, in many studies an age effect is confounded with longer time for language learning. In order to assess whether the mechanism behind the age effect is purely maturational or, at least, partly dependent on experience, it is necessary to assess the influence of age at implantation and children’s experience with language separately. I will present the results of a number of studies with children acquiring spoken German. All the children were implanted between 6 and 47 months of age and acquired spoken German only. The children’s language development was studied over a period of up to three years. The first study with 22 children, based on extensive spontaneous speech samples, showed an association between pre-operative hearing, age at implantation and linguistic progress. A second cross-sectional study with 140 children, based on parental questionnaire data, rendered no significant age effect, but a significant effect of duration of language learning and of parental education on children’s progress in language. A third longitudinal study with 24 children based on spontaneous speech data, rendered a mild effect of age at implantation and a much stronger effect of parental education and quality of parental language input on the children’s language development. The second and third studies contained a significant proportion of children implanted in their first year of life.These results show that the sources of variability in early implanted CI children’s language development are largely due to experiential factors, such as amount of experience with language and quality of language input. Experiential factors interact epigenetically with the maturational factor of age.

Bimodal Bilingualsim
Bimodal (speech-sign) bilinguals use separate perceptual and motoric systems for each language. This separation of systems has significant implications for language processing and control, for the cognitive effects of bilingualism, and for the structural and neural changes that accompany bilingualism. Bimodal bilinguals often code-blend, rather than code-switch, producing elements of their two languages at the same time. Reduced demands on language control and conflict for bimodal bilinguals appears to reduce the advantages in cognitive control that have been observed in unimodal bilinguals. Bimodal bilingualism also uniquely affects brain organization for language and non-linguistic cognitive processes, altering the neural systems involved in motion processing and facial expression recognition.

Op vrijdag 13 mei 2011 zal TWIST, de Leidse studievereniging voor Vergelijkende Indo-Europese Taalwetenschap, Taalwetenschap en Talen en culturen van Afrika, haar vijfde studentenconferentie taalwetenschap organiseren. Alle Bachelor-, Master- en PhD-studenten die origineel onderzoek gedaan hebben (zoals een scriptie, een deel van een scriptie of een project) zijn van harte welkom om dit onderzoek te presenteren in een lezing van 20 minuten met 10 minuten uitloop voor vragen en discussie. Alle talen en alle onderzoekgebieden van de taalwetenschap zijn welkom: van psycholinguļstiek tot taalcontact, van tweedetaalverwerving tot historische fonologie.
De TWIST conferentie zal je een uitstekend academisch platvorm bieden om jouw onderzoek te presenteren aan medestudenten en academici uit het hele land. The Leiden Institute for Brain and Cognition (LIBC) will organize a symposium "Twee Talen - één BeTalen" (or in English "Two Languages, get one for free”) on Friday, 20 May 2011 to address recent developments on multilingualism and multilingual language acquisition.

Importantly, the symposium is open to and directed towards the general public, for instance parents who (plan to) raise their children with more than one language. What is the best way to achieve this goal? Are there different strategies to do this? What is important to keep in mind? Is it a bad sign if a child mixes languages and switches from one language to the other, sometimes in the middle of a sentence, or is this rather a normal, healthy step in the development? Do I ask too much of my child when I raise it with two (or even more) languages? Practical questions like these will be answered and discussed, and the speakers will give some advice about the do’s and don’ts in multilingual language acquisition. This symposium will deal with topics such as multilingual processing and the underlying areas of the brain that are involved when one is proficient in more than one language.

NWO organiseert op maandag 6 juni voor alweer de elfde keer het evenement Bessensap. Bessensap brengt journalisten, redacteuren, voorlichters en mediagenieke onderzoekers bij elkaar. Het motto: wetenschap ontmoet pers, pers ontmoet wetenschap. NWO organiseert het evenement samen met de Vereniging van Wetenschapsjournalisten in Nederland (VWN) en de Nederlandse Vereniging van Journalisten (NVJ). Wilt u uw onderzoek presenteren op Bessensap 2011? Dan kunt u vanaf nu tot en met 23 februari uw voorstel indienen.

Op Bessensap kunnen wetenschappers hun nieuws presenteren aan een uniek publiek van journalisten. Dit is dus de uitgelezen kans om uw onderzoek breed onder de aandacht te brengen.


Over Bessensap

Bessensap is met jaarlijks ruim driehonderd bezoekers dé ontmoeting tussen wetenschap en pers. De dag wordt georganiseerd door NWO, de Vereniging van Wetenschapsjournalisten in Nederland en de Nederlandse Vereniging van Journalisten. Tijdens Bessensap heeft u volop de gelegenheid om met journalisten te spreken. Plaats van handeling is het Museon in Den Haag. Tijdens Bessensap zullen niet alleen wetenschappers hun onderzoek presenteren, maar krijgen bezoekers ook een kans om een kijkje in de keuken te nemen van redacties van TV, radio, kranten en tijdschriften. De dag wordt feestelijk afgesloten met de bekendmaking van de winnaars van de NWO-Spinozapremie 2011. U kunt zich ook aanmelden als bezoeker.


Onderzoekers kunnen voorstellen indienen voor twee presentatievormen:


Traditionele presentatie
Tijdens de traditionele presentatie houdt de onderzoeker een verhaal van tien minuten. Daarna is er vijf minuten tijd voor vragen uit het publiek


Masterclass presentatie
In de masterclass presentatie staan niet alleen de wetenschap en het nieuws centraal, maar ook de presentatie zelf. De onderzoeker krijgt vijf minuten om een punt te maken. De volgende tien minuten geven journalisten uit een panel en het publiek feedback op de presentatie en stellen ze inhoudelijke vragen. Het panel geeft na afloop punten voor de presentatie. Alle masterclassers strijden tegen elkaar om de hoogste score.

Voor alle presentaties geldt dat ze bedoeld zijn voor een publiek van journalisten. Journalisten zijn bovenal leken. Spreek dus (ook in uw voorstel) in lekentaal, opgeleukt met voorbeelden. Journalisten willen nieuws, unieke zaken, mooie dingen, voorspellingen. Het hoeft niet allemaal hip, schokkend en controversieel te zijn, maar het helpt wel. En: hoe heter van de pers, hoe beter.


Voorstellen indienen en selectie

Voorstellen indienen kan tot woensdag 23 februari.

Vóór 31 maart laten wij de indieners weten welke voorstellen wij uit het aanbod hebben gekozen.

De selectiecommissie bestaat uit voorlichters en journalisten. Wij selecteren subjectiever dan onderzoekers gewend zijn van NWO. 'Hard' nieuws trekt bij de selectiecommissie de meeste aandacht. Als u een publicatie heeft in de fase 'accepted' of 'submitted', dan horen we dat heel graag. Dat levert pluspunten op.


Over NWO

De Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) is dé nationale wetenschapsfinancier en heeft tot taak het wetenschappelijke onderzoek in Nederland te laten excelleren via nationale competitie. Jaarlijks geeft NWO ruim 700 miljoen euro uit aan subsidies voor toponderzoek en toponderzoekers, vernieuwende instrumenten en apparatuur, en aan instituten waar toponderzoek wordt bedreven. I wanted to let you know about NYI (the NY-St. Petersburg Institute of Linguistics, Cognition and Culture) - the ongoing St. Petersburg summer institute I have co-directed since 2003, which will be held this year from July 18-August 5, 2011 in St. Petersburg, Russia.
NYI is a phenomenal way for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students to have an eye-opening overseas experience, while continuing their focus on Linguistics and Cognitive Science. The school is a 3-week Institute, held in beautiful St. Petersburg, Russia, at which students choose 4 seminars in a range of fields, especially Linguistics and Cognitive Psychology. Faculty are from a wide range of US and European institutions, and this year's Linguistics and Psychology program features Caroline Heycock (Edinburgh), Darryl Hill (CUNY), Nina Kazanina (Bristol), Roumyana Pancheva (USC), Maria Polinsky (Harvard), John F. For the past 23 years, the European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information (ESSLLI) has been organized every year by the Association for Logic, Language and Information (FoLLI) in different sites around Europe. The main focus of ESSLLI is on the interface between linguistics, logic and computation.

ESSLLI offers foundational, introductory and advanced courses, as well as workshops, covering a wide variety of topics within the three areas of interest: Language and Computation, Language and Logic, and Logic and Computation. Previous summer schools have been highly successful, attracting up to 500 students from Europe and elsewhere. The school has developed into an important meeting place and forum for discussion for students and researchers interested in the interdisciplinary study of Logic, Language and Information. During two weeks, around 50 courses and 10 workshops are offered to the attendants, each of 1.5 hours per day during a five days week, with up to seven parallel sessions. ESSLLI also includes a student session (papers and posters by students only, 1.5 hour per day during the two weeks) and four evening lectures by senior scientists in the covered areas.

In 2011, ESSLLI will held in Ljubljana, Slovenia and will be organized by the Slovenian Language Technologies Society (SDJT), the Jo˛ef Stefan Institute (IJS) and The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics (FMF) in Ljubljana, Slovenia. MEETING DESCRIPTION



Shared grammaticalization refers to the state whereby two or more languages have the input and the output of a grammaticalization process in common. The shared grammaticalization may have arisen independently in each of them by universal principles of grammatical change, it may have been induced by language contact, or it may have been inherited, either from the ancestral language, when the languages were one and the same or through “parallel drift”, after the languages were disconnected. Universal principles are at work, for instance, in the shared grammaticalization of a verb ‘go’ into a future marker by genealogically and areally unrelatable languages such as English in Europe, Zulu in Africa, Quechua in South America and Tamil in Asia. A classical example of contact-induced grammaticalization is the copying of aspectual meanings on certain originally independent verbs, such as the copying of progressive aspect on the verb eraman ‘to carry’ in southern Basque under influence of the grammaticalized progressive meaning of the Spanish verb llevar ‘to carry’ (Jendraschek 2007: 157). A prototypical case of inheritance is the shared grammaticalization of the Romance future markers; Romance languages globally share a root for the verb ‘have’ such as French avoir, Spanish haber, Portuguese haver and Italian avere as well as the grammaticalized future marker as in French chante-rons, Spanish canta-ré, Portuguese canta-rei and Italian cante-rémo ‘we will sing’, reflecting a process of grammaticalization that took place in the ancestral language.

The approaches taken by the speakers will be either theoretical, reflecting upon shared grammaticalization in a cross-linguistic sample of languages, or experimental, investigating shared grammaticalization between two or more Transeurasian languages or between a Transeurasian language and unrelated languages. We use Transeurasian in reference to a large group of geographically adjacent languages, traditionally known as “Altaic”. They share a significant number of linguistic properties and include at most five different linguistic families: Japonic, Koreanic, Tungusic, Mongolic and Turkic.

The goal of the workshop is to shed light on instances of shared grammaticalization and the factors triggering them, with a special focus on the Transeurasian languages.



Specific issues to be addressed include, among others:

- Is it possible to distinguish between the different determinants of shared grammaticalization: universals, contact or inheritance?

- What is the exact impact of language contact and common ancestorship on the grammaticalisation process?

- Is it possible to borrow grammaticalization per se, as a historical process?

- Heine and Kuteva (2005) delimit their description of contact-induced grammaticalization to selective semantic copying, in their terms “replication”, but are there examples of globally copied grammaticalization?

- Where do instances of so-called “grammatical accomodation” (Aikhenvald 2002: 5, 239; 2007: 24), namely the development of a native morpheme on the model of the syntactic function of a phonetically similar morpheme in the model language, fit in? Are these cases of contact-induced grammaticalization?

- Do we find examples of “parallel drift” (Sapir 1921: 157-182, LaPolla 1994) in the Transeurasian languages or beyond? Is there evidence to support this specific type of grammaticalization in genealogical units whereby under influence of a common origin the same grammaticalization processes occur repeatedly but independently in each of the languages?

Goal

Job description

The research programme Neurolinguistic profiles of developmental dyslexia in a longitudinal perspective (funded by NWO) forms a continuation of the Dutch Dyslexia Programme (DDP): a longitudinal study that started in 1998, in which 180 children with a familial risk of dyslexia, and over 100 control children have been studied from the age of 2 months until 10 years. The DDP yielded a worldwide unique, longitudinal data-set; the research population is still available.
In the present programme, this context allows us to further study the phonological and literacy development of these children, and to address the following intriguing question. Although about 40% to 60% of children from dyslexic parents are diagnosed with dyslexia (labeled DYS), the remaining at-risk children learn to read and spell within normal ranges (nonDYS). The crucial question is how the differences between affected and unaffected children in reading abilities relate to risk factors and protecting factors in neurolinguistic processing.

In close collaboration with a parallel project at the UvA, this project monitors the higher order reading acquisition process by means of fMRI combined with EEG (ERP) measurements while the children perform increasingly complex reading tasks requiring integration of phonological, lexical and semantic processes. Theoretical and technical support is available. Task of the PhD-student is to set up, conduct, analyze and publish this exciting series of experiments.

Qualifications
• (Research) Master's degree in experimental or clinical linguistics, cognitive neuroscience, neurolinguistics, learning disabilities, or related field
• experience/affinity with neurophysiology (EEG, \ERP) and/or brain-imaging (fMRI)

The Faculty of Philosophy is seeking a PhD candidate for the ERC funded research project BLENDS (Between Direct and Indirect Discourse--Shifting Perspective in Blended Discourse) of Dr. Emar Maier.

Project
The ability to talk about what others say or think is a key aspect of human cognition. For instance, reported speech constructions (he said it was raining) are claimed to be part of what sets human language apart from that of apes and other animals. In addition, the acquisition of this construction has been related to the acquisition of Theory of Mind, i.e. the ability to reason with the fact that other people have beliefs and desires distinct from one’s own. BLENDS tries to unravel how speech reporting in natural language works. It rejects the traditional rigid distinction between direct discourse (John said, "I’m a fool") and indirect discourse (John said that he's a fool), and proposes an alternative framework of “Blended Discourse”. We test this proposal empirically in signed languages, child language and Ancient Greek.

The position advertised is for the child language subproject, called “The acquisition of the direct--indirect distinction”. Its aim is to investigate if, when, and how children acquire an adult-like conception of the distinction between direct and indirect discourse. The hypothesis is that children start out with a flexible reporting mode where they can freely mix the reporter’s and reportee’s perspectives.

Programma. Het (NWO-)VIDI-onderzoeksprogramma “The uniformity of linguistic diversity: Subject-Predicate relations” onderzoekt de syntactische variatie betreffende subject-predicaatrelaties (d.w.z. de relatie tussen het subject Jan en het predicaat lacht in Jan lacht) op drie verschillende niveaus van vergelijking: macrovariatie (variatie tussen ongerelateerde talen zoals het Japans en het Nederlands), synchrone microvariatie (variatie tussen gerelateerde talen zoals het Limburgs en het Utrechts) en diachrone microvariatie (variatie tussen bijvoorbeeld het Middellimburgs en het hedendaagse Limburgs).

Het theoretisch kader van het project als geheel is dat van de generatieve taalkunde. Het programma omvat drie deelprojecten: twee AiO-projecten en een project voor de projectleider.

De werkzaamheden van beide AiO’s omvatten de volgende twee componenten:
• Het opstellen van een corpus met dialectgegevens van de Nederlandse dialecten door de eeuwen heen (van de Middelnederlandse dialecten tot en met het hedendaagse dialecten);
• Het uitvoeren van syntactisch onderzoek naar de variatie betreffende het subject (project a) of het predicaat (project b).
De projectleider benadert de variatie vanuit een meer macrotypologische hoek.

Doel
Het doel van de AIO-aanstelling is dat u een opleiding volgt tot wetenschappelijk onderzoeker die uitmondt in een dissertatie binnen een periode van 3,5 (maximaal 4) jaar bij 1,0 FTE. The Institute for Language, Cognition and Computation (ILCC) at the University of Edinburgh invites applications for a three-year PhD studentship starting in September 2011. ILCC is dedicated to the pursuit of basic and applied research on computational approaches to language, communication and cognition.

The studentship is associated with the EPSRC project "An Integrated Model of Syntactic and Semantic Prediction in Human Language Processing". The aim of this project is to develop a model that combines probabilistic incremental parsing with compositional distributional semantics in order to achieve a broad-coverage account of human language processing that can simulate reading time data. The project will also apply this model to NLP tasks such as text simplification.

The student will be supervised by Dr. Frank Keller and Dr. Mirella Lapata, and will work on a topic drawn from following research areas:

o probabilistic parsing, including incremental parsing, unsupervised
parsing, and crosslinguistic parsing

o distributional models of semantics, including compositional and
syntax-aware vector-space models and topic models

o models of human language processing, including models that integrate
syntactic and semantic processing

o models of eye-tracking data in reading, including applications such
as text simplification

The successful candidate will have a good honors degree or equivalent in computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, computer science, or a related discipline. He/she will have strong programming skills and previous experience in natural language processing, e.g., in parsing, distributional semantics, or probabilistic modeling.

The studentship covers maintenance at the research council rate of around GBP 13 500 per year, plus tuition fees at the EU/UK rate.

Dit jaar zal de Belgische Kring voor Linguļstiek zijn 75e verjaardag vieren, en dat willen wij graag feestelijk in de verf zetten op de jaarlijkse Taaldag, op 7 mei 2011 aan de Universiteit Antwerpen (Stadscampus). Enerzijds door de beproefde formule voor één keer wat op te smukken: naast de traditionele 20’-lezingen door de leden, zullen ook een paar gerenommeerde Belgische linguļsten van verschillende universiteiten, die nauwe banden gehad hebben (en/of nog hebben) met de BKL en werkzaam zijn in verschillende domeinen en op verschillende talen, een plenaire lezing houden: Johan van der Auwera, Guido Vanden Wyngaerd, Marc Dominicy en Marc Wilmet. Anderzijds proberen we die dag een record aantal deelnemers bijeen te brengen, en, indien mogelijk, ook voor de BKL het record aantal leden (125) van 2006 te overtreffen. FRENCH AS LINGUA FRANCA IN THE LOW COUNTRIES DURING THE LONG NINETEENTH CENTURY (1800-1914)
CASES OF HISTOIRE CROISÉE AND TRANSNATIONAL CULTURAL TRANSFER

During the long nineteenth century, French functioned as the lingua franca in Europe, as it was used for cultural contacts of the Low Countries with France and the Francophone part of Belgium as well as for contact with remote or peripheral areas. On the one hand, this situation implied that Francophone literature had an enormous influence on literature in Dutch and that, in the use of French, the first signs of a growing cosmopolitanism could be observed. This open-mindedness also implied an interest for literature in Dutch. On the other hand, the high status of French brought with it that the Dutch and Belgians came into contact with other literatures, for instance Russian literature, and connected with writers who did not use French in the first place for their own literary work.
For this conference, departing from the Low Countries and preferably using the method of ‘pragmatic induction’ presented by histoire croisée, we want to trace the ways in which literature in French (not limited to French literature) has influenced cultural life in general. This implies both the interaction with French-writing fellow-countrymen in the Netherlands and Belgium, with French literature itself, as well as the contacts using French in the European and global context. Special attention is paid to cultural intercrossings in history, such as the 1848 revolution, the inauguration of the five-yearly state prize in 1855, the publication of Charles de Coster’s La Légende d’Ulenspiegel in 1867, Victor Hugo’s first grand tour, the journal Van Nu en Straks, etcetera. More than has been the case till now, we want to stimulate textual evidence.
Possible approaches for this transnational study (both synchronic as diachronic) include travel accounts and lecture trips, translations and critiques, mediators and exiles, journals, clubs and associations, publishers and libraries, literary, theatrical and other artistic representations.

From these perspectives, the following questions arise:
On a general cultural level:
- What was the role of French in the formation of a national or transnational identity: were national borders marked or transgressed?
- Should the use of French be considered a pragmatic issue or did it imply a transfer of norms and values?
- Did the use of French enhance a particular look on other cultures?
- To what extent was French as a cultural or literary language challenged by the upcoming / progressing English language?
- What was the role of cultural and socio-economic elites, students and migrants in the dissemination of French?
- Why did particular transfers fail? What kind of reactions does one see on the emerging French cultural language?
- Did bilingualism play a role in the transfer?
- Which consequences did the dissemination of French have for its homeland France?

On a specifically literary level:
- Which decisive moments of cultural intercrossings are to be seen in the nineteenth century?
- Which genres dominated the reception of literature in French (travel accounts, fairy tales of for instance Perrault, science fiction of Jules Verne?)
- Were there new (historical or fictional) characters pushed to the fore (for instance Napoleon, the haggler)
- Which new topoi (not only Paris!) became visible (e.g. Normandy, Picardy, Pas de Calais ...)?
- Did literature change its character (more descriptive, more psychological?) due to transfers from French?
- Which foreign literatures and/or authors (e.g. Russians) became famous through the use of French?

HET FRANS ALS LINGUA FRANCA IN DE LAGE LANDEN GEDURENDE DE LANGE NEGENTIENDE EEUW (1800-1914)
GEVALLEN VAN HISTOIRE CROISÉE EN TRANSNATIONALE CULTUURTRANSFER
Het Frans was gedurende geheel de lange negentiende eeuw dé lingua franca voor Europa, wat betekent dat het zowel gebruikt werd voor culturele contacten van de Lage Landen met Frankrijk en met het Franssprekend deel van Belgiė als met verafgelegen gebieden. Deze situatie impliceerde enerzijds dat de Franstalige literatuur een geweldige impact had op de Nederlandstalige literatuur en dat we in het Frans de eerste tekenen van een groeiend kosmopolitisme zien verschijnen. Deze openheid vertaalde zich ook in een belangstelling voor de Nederlandstalige literatuur. Anderzijds had de hoge status van het Frans tot gevolg dat Nederlanders en Belgen via die taal ook met andere literaturen (bijv. de Russische literatuur) kennis maakten en contacten legden met schrijvers die zich niet in de eerste plaats van het Frans bedienden voor hun eigen literair werk.
Met deze studiedag willen wij, uitgaand van de Lage Landen en bij voorkeur op de wijze van de ‘pragmatische inductie’ die de histoire croisée voorstaat, de wegen nagaan van de impact die literatuur in het Frans (dus niet noodzakelijk Franse literatuur) heeft gehad. Dat betekent dat zowel de uitwisseling met in het Frans schrijvende landgenoten in Nederland en Belgiė, met de Franse literatuur als de contacten in het Frans binnen de hele Europese en mondiale context onderzocht kunnen worden. Speciale aandacht gaat daarbij naar vervlechtingen, kruisingen in de geschiedenis, zoals de revolutie van 1848, de installatie van de vijfjaarlijkse staatsprijs in 1855; de verschijning van La Légende d’Ulenspiegel van Charles de Coster in 1867, de eerste rondreis van Victor Hugo, het tijdschrift Van Nu en Straks, etc. Meer dan tot nu toe in de benaderingen via de ‘histoire croisée’ het geval was, willen we ook de lectuur van teksten stimuleren.
Mogelijke invalshoeken voor deze transnationale studie (synchroon en diachronisch) zijn reisverslagen en lezingentournees, vertalingen en kritieken, bemiddelaars en ballingen,

tijdschriften en verenigingen, uitgevers en bibliotheken, literaire, theatrale en andere artistieke representaties. Uit deze perspectieven vloeien volgende vragen voort:
Op algemeen cultureel vlak:
- welke rol had het Frans bij de vorming van een nationale of transnationale identiteit: werden door het Frans nationale grenzen getrokken of doorbroken?
- was het gebruik van het Frans een pragmatische kwestie of ging het om een transfer van normen en waarden?
- welke selectieve blik op andere culturen had het gebruik van het Frans tot gevolg?
- in welke mate werd het Frans als culturele of literaire taal uitgedaagd door het oprukkende Engels?
- wat was de rol van culturele of sociaal-economische elites, studenten en migraties bij de verspreiding van het Frans?
- waardoor mislukten bepaalde transfers? Wat waren de reacties op het oprukkende Frans als cultuurtaal?
- speelde tweetaligheid een rol bij de overdracht?
- welke gevolgen had de verspreiding van het Frans voor het moederland Frankrijk?
Op specifiek literair vlak:
- welke decisieve momenten van kruisverbindingen geeft de negentiende eeuw te zien?
- welke genres (reisverhalen, sprookjes van bijv. Perrault, science fictionverhalen van Jules Verne?) domineerden de receptie van literatuur in het Frans?
- werden nieuwe (historische of fictieve) personages naar voren geschoven (bijv. Napoleon, de vrek)?
- welke nieuwe topoi (niet alleen Parijs!) werden zichtbaar (bijv. Normandiė, Picardiė, Pas de Calais, …)?
- kreeg de literatuur een nieuw karakter (descriptiever, psychologischer?) door de transfers uit het Frans?
- welke buitenlandse literaturen/auteurs werden in de eerste plaats door het Frans bekend (bijv. Russische literatuur?)

Following the successful NP1 workshop, held in Vigo on 2-3 October 2009, we are pleased to announce the second Vigo-Newcastle-Santiago-Leuven International Workshop on 'The structure of the noun phrase in English -- synchronic and diachronic explorations' (NP2), to be held at Newcastle University (UK) on 15 and 16 September 2011.

This workshop aims to bring together linguists currently looking at any aspect of the English noun phrase from any point of view (syntactic, pragmatic, structural, functional, textual, descriptive, synchronic or diachronic). We would therefore like to invite presentations concerned with any topic involving NPs, including the following:

* the relationship between NP-internal structure and the clausal function of NPs
* NP types, including binominal phrases, discontinuous NPs and possessive constructions
* the structural representation of NPs and their constituents
* strategies of premodification, postmodification and complementation in the NP
* headedness and NPs
* the implications of particular theoretical frameworks for NP structure
* diachronic, syntactic, cognitive and/or construction-based perspectives on any of the above

Abstracts must be submitted in MS Word or RTF format as an e-mail attachment to h.c.leung(removeme)ncl.ac.uk by 15 April 2011. The e-mail should use the subject header "NP2 abstract 2011". Abstracts should be not more than one page in length (single-spaced), including any references. The page should be headed only by the title of the paper and not mention the presenter(s) nor their affiliations or addresses. The accompanying e-mail should include:

Call for papers VIOT 2011
Op 21, 22 en 23 december 2011 vindt aan de Universiteit Leiden het 12e taalbeheersingscongres van de Vereniging voor Interuniversitair Overleg Taalbeheersing (VIOT) plaats. Als thema voor dit twaalfde VIOT-congres is gekozen: Taalgebruik & Diversiteit. U wordt van harte uitgenodigd om een bijdrage aan het congres te leveren.

Thema
Begrijpelijk en aanvaardbaar taalgebruik zijn de onderzoeksobjecten waarop uiteindelijk alle taalbeheersingsonderzoek is gericht. Taalbeheersers zijn immers geļnteresseerd in hoe ons taalgebruik in elkaar steekt en hoe de eigenschappen ervan verklaard kunnen worden, maar ook in hoe het geoptimaliseerd kan worden. Het laatste doel zou niet gerealiseerd kunnen worden zonder het eerste. De vraag of een concrete taaluiting begrijpelijk of aanvaardbaar is, is afhankelijk van tal van factoren, die gemakshalve vaak worden aangeduid als ‘de context’. En het is nu juist deze context die maakt dat de concepten begrijpelijk en aanvaardbaar taalgebruik geen eenduidige invulling kunnen krijgen. Om binnen het taalbeheersingsonderzoek tot betrouwbare beschrijvingen en verklaringen van en effectieve adviezen over taalgebruik te komen, is het daarom noodzakelijk antwoord te krijgen op de vraag hoe diversiteit in de context de begrijpelijkheid en aanvaardbaarheid van het taalgebruik op systematische wijze beļnvloedt. De term diversiteit moet daarbij breed worden opgevat. Hierbij valt te denken aan diversiteit in:
• talige achtergrond van de taalgebruikers
• culturele achtergrond van taalgebruikers
• gesproken en geschreven taalgebruik
• institutionele regels en conventies
• genreconventies
• het soort medium of platform waarvan gebruik wordt gemaakt.
Doel van het 12e VIOT-congres is om – naast de gebruikelijke ruimte voor andere onderwerpen – speciaal aandacht te besteden aan taalbeheersingsonderzoek waarin de samenhang tussen begrijpelijkheid of aanvaardbaarheid van taalgebruik en diversiteit centraal staat. Alle theoretische benaderingen en alle toepassingsgebieden binnen het taalbeheersingsonderzoek kunnen daarbij aan bod komen.

Maximum aantal abstracts

Call for abstracts for Morphology Meeting 2011, Radboud University, Nijmegen, December 21-22 2011. Deadline: Juli 1 2011
From Word to Models of Language: 21-22 December 2011

After an interesting conference in Luik in 2009, this year's Morphology Meeting (De Morfologiedagen) will be hosted by the Radboud University Nijmegen (The Netherlands) on December 21th and 22th. This two-day conference is a meeting place for morphologists of all linguistic disciplines. It aims to strengthen the bonds between researchers in the field of theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, computational linguistics and psycholinguistics.

The theme ‘From Word to Models of Language' is chosen to emphasize that aspects of phonology, syntax and semantics combine with morphology. Sometimes in systematic ways and sometimes in apparently random ways. These connections can be language specific or universal. From morphemes to models; all topics with a central place for morphemes are welcome.

We would like to receive abstracts (maximally 300 words, .doc or .pdf) before the first of July on the following address: morfologiedagen2011(removeme)gmail.com. Please use the subject: ‘abstract Morphology Meeting’. The conference languages are English, Dutch and German.

Wedstrijd Enlighten Your Research - NWO
SURFnet organiseert in samenwerking met SARA, BiG Grid en NWO de derde editie van de wedstrijd Enlighten Your Research. In deze editie worden onderzoekers uitgedaagd voorstellen in te dienen van instellingsoverstijgende samenwerkingsverbanden, die baat hebben bij een hoogwaardige netwerkverbinding tussen locaties waar e-Researchfaciliteiten aanwezig zijn. Hierbij valt te denken aan geavanceerde diensten zoals supercomputing, grid, visualisatie en grote hoeveelheden dataopslag. Researchers kunnen onderzoeksvoorstellen indienen tot en met 12 mei 2011.

Samenwerking
Het is de eerste keer dat de organiserende partijen op deze manier hun krachten bundelen. Door inbreng van hun eigen expertise, infrastructuur en diensten proberen zij gezamenlijk het onderzoek in Nederland naar een hoger plan te brengen. Deze unieke samenwerking biedt onderzoekers de mogelijkheid om eenvoudig en efficiėnt met elkaar samen te werken via een naadloze koppeling tussen allerlei soorten infrastructurele diensten.

Prijzen
Deelnemers aan de wedstrijd maken kans op dataopslag, rekentijd, geavanceerde netwerkverbindingen en support bij de implementatie daarvan. Verder krijgen de winnaars een geldprijs van maximaal EUR 20,000. Daarnaast is er dit jaar een duurzaamheidsprijs voor het meest energiezuinige voorstel.

WANTED: LINGUISTS interested in a Marie Curie IEF Grant
I’m working at Wuppertal University (Germany) as a full professor. To extend my working group, I’m looking for fellows interested in a Marie Curie IEF Grant. These are the facts:

• grant: a Intra?European Fellowship for Career Development (IEF)
• idea: IEFs support the career development of experienced researchers by providing
funding for a research project. The project should enhance the researcher’s
diversification of competences
• duration: 12 to 24 months
• topic of research: can be chosen freely by the researcher
• formal eligibility: experienced researchers of any nationality who have spent less
than 12 months in the last 3 years prior to the deadline in Germany
• deadline: August 2011
• qualification: postdocs and researchers with at least 4 years of research experience
(full?time equivalent) after graduation. There is no upper age limit.
• funding: salary + supplementary allowances, contribution to research and travel costs, management and overheads. Depending on research experience, the salary is between 37,000?85,000 Euros per year
Last year I applied successfully together with a fellow for an IEF Marie?Curie?Grant at the EU, so I know how it works.

More personal facts on my side are:
1) the proposal (20 pages) should be written by both of us, as the application is a joint
one ? me in the role of the host and you in the role of the researcher
2) there is a deadline in August for final submission. However, it would be better to finish the proposal end of June. Then we can hand it over to people whose job it is to help us ? there is a national contact point here (at Humboldt's) who read and comment proposals, the same in your country, there is a research unit in my rectorate who are also reading and commenting, there is Euroconsult in Bonn who likewise does it
3) the chances of success are about 20 percent, which is not bad

VAN GOGH PROGRAMME PROCEDURE FOR APPLICATION 2011-2012

FOR RESEARCHERS IN THE NETHERLANDS:
GENERAL INFORMATION
In 1997, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Netherlands Ministry of
Education, Culture and Science (OCW) signed a bilateral agreement to increase the possibilities for scientific cooperation between the two countries, resulting in the Van Gogh programme. The programme is administered by the FNA on the Dutch side and by EGIDE on the French side.
The objective of the Van Gogh programme is to encourage and facilitate the exchange of French and Dutch researchers within the framework of a joint research project.

A LARGER TARGET GROUP
Until recently the Van Gogh programme was linked to the Innovational Research Incentives Scheme (Dutch: Vernieuwingsimpuls). The aim of this link is: to encourage and support the most talented (young) researchers in the Netherlands to engage in research cooperation with French research groups. An added benefit is that the quality of applicants has already been established.
As from 2009 the target group will be extended to other researchers with a record of proven excellence. Applications can be written by:
- the traditional group: veni-vidi-vici grantholders
- Spinoza prizewinners: recognizable quality
- KNAW professors and members of the Young Academy: recognizable quality
- Dutch ERC-grant holders
- Researchers that have been awarded for the excellent research by their
universities.
- Extra attention: application in alfa/gamma research.
PROCEDURE OCW only funds (the Dutch part of) the cooperation if it includes a researcher who has competed for and received a (relevant) research grant.
LINKING A FRENCH GROUP TO A DUTCH RESEARCHER Application. On the Dutch side, a researcher with an awarded research grant can submit a work plan and requested budget for the French-Dutch cooperation to FNA. It is then treated as an extension of the awarded grant and will automatically be approved if the cooperation plans are positively evaluated by both FNA and the French partner institution. On the French side, the procedure is unchanged: a separate application is tobe submitted to the appropriate institution.
Evaluation. FNA will only evaluate the cooperation plans and budget. As the scientific quality of the Dutch researcher has already been established, there is no need for additional peer review. On the French side the procedure is unchanged: approval will depend on the outcome of the external review and relative ranking of the proposals.

BUDGET GUIDELINES AND MANAGEMENT
The maximum duration of the cooperation is two years. After one year, an extension has to be applied for together with a report on the first year.
The following budgetary restrictions apply for Dutch applicants:
The budget should not exceed € 10,000 in the 1st year (max. 2 years).
Only costs for travel and living costs are eligible (i.e. no research costs) (subsistence: up to a maximum of € 110- per day per person; travel costs: real costs up to a maximum of €300- per person, per trip). Costs for other members of the research group involved in the French – Dutch cooperation can be included. FNA will cover costs from Dutch researchers traveling to France, and vice versa.
