Title: 20 years in language revitalization: what have we learned?

abstract
It is now 20 years since Ken Hale et al galvanized the linguistic community with their set of articles on endangered languages, and 10 years since the publication of /The Green Book on Language Revitalization in Practice. /During these two decades, both language documentation and language revitalization have developed new methods and practices, and have been participated in by a growing number of linguists and speech communities. Linguists and the communities they work with have developed new kinds of relationships, with stronger control by the communities and a greater commitment to applied work by the linguists. At the same time, all players are developing more sophisticated goals for documentation and a more realistic understanding of the future of endangered languages. This talk will survey what we have learned over the last 20 years about ways and means of the preservation, survival, or revival of endangered languages, and where we might expect people will go from here.

De Grote Taaldag, Utrecht University, LOT, Anéla/VIOT & AvT, 4 februari 2012
Op zaterdag, 4 februari 2012 vindt de tweede editie van de Grote Taaldag plaats. De Grote Taaldag is een initiatief van AVT, Anéla, VIOT en LOT waarbij drie reeds bekende evenementen samen worden gebracht: de Anéla / VIOT Juniorendag, de AVT TINdag en het Taalgala.

Tijdens het eerste deel van de dag worden de reguliere programma’s van de Juniorendag en de TINdag naast elkaar gehouden. Tijdens het tweede deel van de dag vindt het Taalgala plaats. Tijdens het Taalgala worden verschillende prijzen uitgereikt zoals de Anéla / AVT-dissertatieprijs voor het beste taalkundige proefschrift van 2010 en de LOT-Populariseringsprijs voor het beste populariserende artikel op het terrein van de taalwetenschap van 2009 en 2010.

De Grote Taaldag vindt plaats in Utrecht, Drift 21 en 25.

Het 28ste Onze Taal-congres, gehouden op 26 november 2011, ging over het leren van taal. Hans Bennis reageerde met zijn lezing op de veel gehoorde stelling dat de taalvaardigheid van leerlingen almaar slechter wordt. Volgens de directeur van het Meertens Instituut is het tegendeel waar: "Er wordt meer geschreven dan ooit tevoren, dus laten we ophouden ons zo druk te maken om die d’s en t’s."

Piet Van De Craen (Vrije Universiteit Brussel)
Onderzoek naar meertalig onderwijs is onderzoek naar complexe systemen.

Meertalig onderwijs, met name content and language integrated learning (CLIL), wordt in Europa steeds populairder. Eén van de redenen is dat dit soort onderwijs, waarbij een deel van het curriculum in een andere taal dan het Nederlands wordt aangeboden, op korte tijd zoveel betere resultaten oplevert dan het traditionele taalonderwijs. Maar er is meer aan de hand. Meertalig onderwijs gaat over meer dan vreemde taalverwerving. Het heeft ook belangrijke cognitieve implicaties en gevolgen voor de breinwerking. Deze aspecten bleven tot nu toe erg onderbelicht. In deze lezing licht ik de cognitieve en neurowetenschappelijke aspecten van CLIL toe en vergelijk ik ze met complexe systemen, waarbij implicietheid, heterogeniteit en emergentie centraal staan.

Syntactische complexiteit als maat voor de ontwikkeling van taalvaardigheid in een tweede taal

De syntactische complexiteit van de mondelinge en schriftelijke taalproductie van tweede-taalleerders wordt vaak beschouwd als maat voor het algemene niveau van taalvaardigheid van tweede-taalleerders. Aan de operationalisatie en de meting van syntactische complexiteit zijn echter haken en ogen verbonden. Zoals benadrukt door Norris & Ortega (2009), moet onderscheid worden gemaakt tussen de verschillende dimensies van syntactische complexiteit, afhankelijk van het beheersingsniveau in de tweede taal. Zo realiseren beginnende leerders syntactische complexiteit vooral door middel van nevenschikking, halfgevorderde leerders door onderschikking, terwijl bij gevorderde leerders een toename in syntactische complexiteit zich allereerst manifesteert in de mate van complexiteit van de naamwoordgroep. In mijn bijdrage breng ik verslag uit van een studie naar de ontwikkeling van schrijfvaardigheid in een tweede taal van T2 schrijvers van het Nederlands, Italiaans en Spaans. In de studie wordt syntactische complexiteit op verschillende manieren gemeten: a) algemene complexiteitsmaten (ratio measures); b) syntactische onderschikking; c) complexiteit van de naamwoordgroep; d) nevenschikking. Ook ga ik in op het nieuw op te richten Aila Research netwerk Cosell (‘Complexity and second language learning’).

Studiemiddag over taaltesten: constructie, interpretatie en beoordeling

Op woensdag 14 december organiseren de Nederlandse Vereniging voor Stem-,Spraak- en Taalpathologie (NVSST) en het Werkverband Amsterdamse Psycholinguļsten (WAP) een studiemiddag over constructie, interpretatie en beoordeling van taaltesten.

Tijdens deze middag wordt ingegaan op vragen, zoals ‘Wat betekent de beoordeling van de ‘COTAN?’, ‘Hoe moeten resultaten geļnterpreteerd worden bij tweetalige kinderen?’, ‘Wanneer noemen we een score beneden gemiddeld of zwak?’ en ‘Wat zijn de nadelen van het gebruik van leeftijdsequivalenten in de communicatie naar ouders toe?’.

In het plenaire gedeelte zullen diverse deskundigen een uiteenzetting geven over:
1. hoe het proces van testontwikkeling eruit ziet;
2. hoe resultaten van taaltesten geļnterpreteerd worden;
3. hoe de betrouwbaarheid en validiteit van een test wordt bepaald.
Na het plenaire deel zijn er twee parallelle sessies. Een sessie met lezingen door ontwikkelaars van taaltesten voor kinderen. In de andere sessie lezingen door ontwikkelaars van taaltesten voor volwassenen. In het parallelle deel wordt de link gelegd tussen de kernpunten uit het plenaire gedeelte en het gebruik van taaltesten in de praktijk. Ook zal er voldoende tijd zijn voor discussie tussen de ontwikkelaars en het publiek.

Abstract

Once you understand what sign languages are, that is natural human languages, you can ask the quite legitimate question whether learning such a language is different in any essential way. In this talk I will address a selection of questions and provide some answers. The modality of sign languages is visual and spatial - will this make an essential difference to the acquisition process for children or for adults as second language learners? Is signing easier for children? When you sign your conversation partner has to look at you. Is this difficult for children or adults? A sign language has its own grammar – how do such features impact on learning? Finally you can speak and sign at the same time – how does this affect acquisition?

De Nederlandse Vereniging voor Fonetische Wetenschappen organiseert op donderdag 15 december 2011 wederom de Dag van de Fonetiek. Deze dag is gratis toegankelijk voor alle geļnteresseerden. De Dag van de Fonetiek vindt plaats in de Sweelinckzaal, Drift 21 te Utrecht. Het programma en de abstracts staan online.

De Dag van de Fonetiek heeft, naast ingezonden lezingen, dit jaar voor het eerst een keynote-speaker: Deniz Ba?kent.
Deniz Ba?kent is sinds 2009 als Rosalind Franklin fellow en universitair docent verbonden aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen en het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen. In 2010 heeft het NWO haar een VIDI-subsidie toegekend voor het onderzoek "The curious case of phonemic restoration: a cognitive approach to speech perception with hearing impairment". In haar multi-disciplinaire onderzoek probeert Deniz Ba?kent te identificeren welke problemen luisteraars met een gehoorstoornis in hun dagelijks leven tegenkomen.
Op 15 december geeft zij over haar onderzoek een lezing met de titel "Restoration of interrupted speech: What does it teach us for top-down speech repair in hearing impaired?".

After an interesting conference in Luik in 2009, this year's Morphology Days (Morfologiedagen) will be hosted by the Radboud University Nijmegen (The Netherlands) on December 21th and 22th. This two-day conference is a meeting place for morphologists of all linguistic disciplines. It aims to strengthen the bonds between researchers in the field of theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, computational linguistics and psycholinguistics.

The theme ‘From Word to Models of Language' is chosen to emphasize that aspects of phonology, syntax and semantics combine with morphology. Sometimes in systematic ways and sometimes in apparently random ways. These connections can be language specific or universal.
From morphemes to models; various topics with a central place for morphemes are incorporated in the programme.

The World Universities Forum is held annually in different locations around the world. The Forum was held in Davos, Switzerland in 2008 and 2010; in conjunction with the Indian Institute of Technology - Bombay, Mumbai, India in 2009; and it was hosted by the Hong Kong Institute of Education in 2011.

The 2012 World Universities Forum is being held in Rhodes, Greece. The island sits at the Crossroads between the Middle East, Africa and Europe. This has given the city a long history of different cultures, identities and languages. Rhodes is famous as the site of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It also contains the citadel of Rhodes, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe.

Plenary speakers, parallel paper, workshop and colloquium presentations will be made by researchers and administrators from a wide range of fields, institutions and geographical locations. Participants are invited to submit a presentation proposal for a 30-minute paper, 60-minute workshop, or a jointly presented 90-minute colloquium session.

Presenters may also choose to submit their written papers for publication in the peer-refereed Journal of the World Universities Forum. Those who are unable to attend the conference in person are welcome to submit a virtual registration, which allows for submission of a paper for refereeing and possible publication in the journal, as well as an option to upload a video presentation to the conference YouTube channel.

The deadline for the next round in the call for papers (a title and short abstract) is 12 May 2011. Future deadlines will be announced on the conference website after this date. Workshop: Socio-cognitive mechanisms of symbolic communication

Date: 26 January 2012 from 9:00 until 18:30 hours.

In contrast to other species, humans have the capacity to communicate symbolically (i.e. using forms that are either arbitrary or conventionalised) in an open fashion (i.e. with a very large repertoire of symbols, which in turn can be strung together according to some conventions and rules). It is widely accepted that our ability to communicate symbolically has both cognitive and social roots. In recent years, traditional approaches from humanities to study symbolic communication, such as linguistics and psychology, have been complemented by computational approaches. However, interactions between researchers from the humanities with computer modellers have been few and far between, perhaps due to a lack of mutual understanding of what each field can contribute to the other.

This workshop inaugurates the ‘Socio-cognitive mechanisms of symbolic communication’ project, funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) within the Internationalisation of the Humanities programme. The objective of this project is to set up an open structural research network, which brings together researchers from various disciplines who investigate the socio-cognitive nature of symbolic communication. The objective of the network is to improve cross-fertilization between researchers from different disciplines by exchanging knowledge and experiences, and join forces to study communication multidisciplinary. This way, we aim to improve each other’s research methods and investigate unifying properties of the socio-cognitive mechanisms underlying symbolic communication. At the workshop, the partners in this project and two keynote speakers will present about their research.

The Metaphor Lab at VU University Amsterdam is organizing a special Winter School in metaphor identification and analysis for approximately 30 PhD students and postdocs at the end of January 2012. Three courses will be offered, each consisting of four sessions of two hours. Participants may select one, two or all three courses.

Course details

Linguistic metaphor identification: How to use the MIPVU procedure (Krennmayr)

This course will focus on the identification of various types of metaphor in different kinds of language data using the MIPVU procedure (Steen et al. 2010). This procedure is a systematic, step-by-step protocol that allows you to code natural language data for metaphorical language use. We will discuss what it means to identify metaphor on a linguistic level of analysis and critically look at tools analysts may choose to code their data for metaphorical language use. The course will guide you through each step of the MIPVU metaphor identification procedure. Through hands-on activities using texts from different registers you will learn to solve problems you may encounter as you proceed through each of the procedure?s steps. You will be equipped with the skills you will need for building your own dataset annotated for metaphor.

From linguistic to conceptual metaphor in five steps (Steen)

This course will examine how you can reconstruct conceptual mappings across domains from previously identified metaphor-related words in discourse. The five-step method (Steen 2009) assumes that the first step involves the identification of metaphor-related words by means of MIPVU, and then considers four subsequent stages of analysis required for formulating a complete cross-domain mapping: 2) identifying the underlying conceptual structure of the utterance, in the form of a proposition in a text base; 3) identifying the assumed open comparison inherent in the proposition; 4) determining a related closed comparison in the form of an analogy; 5) identifying the most important implicature(s) of the analogy. The focus of the course will lie on the theoretical model for metaphor in discourse that is assumed for this type of approach, and on the nature of the various analytical steps involved in the five-step method. ry will be considered throughout.

Metaphor in gesture with speech: Identification and interpretation (Cienki)

This course will be oriented towards those with little or no background in gesture research who would like to analyze metaphor use in video-recorded spoken language data. We will begin with a brief overview of basic issues, including some fundamentals of analyzing gesture, consideration of how a gesture can be metaphoric, and an overview of the ways in which metaphoric gestures may relate to speech (metaphoric gesture with and without metaphorically used words) (Cienki 2008, 2010). Applied analysis in the class will include group work on examples provided by the instructor and work with video data brought by the participants. Participants are therefore encouraged to bring excerpts of digital video from their own data as well as their own laptop computers. Based upon the analysis, we will discuss how metaphor plays out in dynamic ways in multimodal communication and what gesture may reveal about metaphoric thought.

Objective and Content of the Conference
Impacts of Colonial Thinking on Intercultural, Transcultural and Translational Processes and the Influence of the Missionized Other in Missionary Linguistics.
This conference aims at exploring missionary linguistics within the wider context of (political and spiritual) colonization. The cognitive appropriation of foreign cultural givens and the transcultural processes such as transference and translation implicated in these processes (based on intercultural encounters and interactions between the European missionaries and the speakers of the various indigenous languages and cultures in the Americas, Asia or Africa can be considered activities of colonizing or only influencing the Other. Within this framework, the learning, recording and studying of the indigenous languages by the missionaries can be described as complex processes of perception of the language and culture (semantics and pragmatics) of the Other and of oneself in confrontation with the Other, processes at the interface between subjective and socially constructed knowledge.

The historical process of recognition in the context of colonial thinking and missionary ideology starts within the basic cognitive experience and operation of an implicit – or even explicit – contrastive (interculturally-based) take on the perceived object: the indigenous language, its variation and normativization, its social function in the new context. The missionary perception here is very specific since the description implies language politics and planning. The formerly socially constructed knowledge about the concept of language, the structure of language, grammatical category and lexical inventories (the linguistic discourse of grammar and lexicon) forms the memory base for the study and record of the given language. The ongoing discourses on language situated in a specific temporally and culturally determined context further determine the study and recording of language and its function in society. On the other side, confrontation with the languages and cultures which are the object of missionary activities, may result in changes of such (pre-)conceptions.

The output (grammars, dictionaries, language courses, catechisms etc.) is a transcultural hybrid of given and new information: known structures and a differing language. The studies, records, descriptions, analyses of the indigenous language can thus be described in terms of a process by which the missionary linguist having been formed in Europe or by European conceptions translates the unknown language into the known structures of language (assisted by native informants and “colleagues”). On the other hand, the missionary-linguist translates the known paradigms and concepts of European languages into the indigenous languages overcoming sometimes traditional thinking about language and language categories. Asymmetries and incongruences between different systems could operate both as a negative and a positive inspiring factor. Facts could be overseen when the traditional paradigm was applied too strictly, whereas in other cases, the differences offered new challenges for describing typologically different languages.

It is our great pleasure to announce the first IMPRS student organised workshop:

Relations in Relativity: New Perspectives on Language and Thought

Does the language we speak influence the way we think? This question of linguistic relativity, most famously raised by Benjamin Whorf,
has been a strong point of debate over the past decades. An emerging view that reconciles the empirical evidence is that thought is neither
determined by language nor completely free of its influence. This workshop aims to take this idea further and ask the resulting questions:
How does language influence thought? In which domains? When do language effects kick in? And why is it important?

Date: May 9 – 11, 2012
Venue: Radboud University (Aula) & Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics
Accessibility: Open to all, with the exception of the small discussion group sessions which are only available to IMPRS students.

Format:
The workshop consists of:
- two discussions between invited guests,
- a panel discussion between invited and local experts,
- a PhD student poster session
- and a series of small discussion groups between the invited guests and IMPRS students.

The first conversation is a perspectives discussion on the mechanisms of linguistic relativity.
The second debate extends the linguistic relativity question to the domain of phonology asking the question: Are low levels of auditory
perception affected by phonological categorization, or does language experience only influence perceptual categorization at a later stage?
The final panel discussion looks at the relevance of linguistic relativity. Why should we study it? What impact does it have on our
everyday lives?

The Faculty of Humanities provides education and conducts research with a strong international profile in a large number of disciplines in the field of language and culture. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the Faculty maintains close ties with many cultural institutes in the capital city. Tasks
The chair in Language Acquisition comprises teaching and research in the area of language acquisition in a multilingual context, with a potential specialization in second language acquisition, early child bilingualism, specific language impairment in a multilingual context, and related areas.
The study programme is mainly centred around Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes on specific languages offered by the faculty, as well as the programme in general linguistics. The professor will also participate in research Master programmes and other overarching curricular subjects that are not related to any particular language (for the curriculum, please see the UvA’s digital course catalogue: www.studiegids.uva.nl). The Faculty’s BA programmes are taught within the College of Humanities, while MA and doctorate programmes are administered within the Graduate School for Humanities.

Research focuses on the study of Language Acquisition and is conducted at Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication (ACLC). In defining its research programme for the period 2009-2012, the Faculty has identified three research priority areas: Cultural Heritage and Identities, Cultural Transformations and Globalisation, and the interfaculty area of Cognitive Modelling and Learning. Requirements
The professor of Language Acquisition must be able to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the field, as evidenced by his/her academic qualifications, publications and teaching experience. S/he has completed doctoral work on a topic in this or a related discipline and, as the prospective chair, has a good understanding of the domain as a whole.
Much of the acquisition research carried out at the Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication concerns language acquisition in a multilingual context. This includes research into (early) child bilingualism, adult second language acquisition, second and foreign language learning in primary, secondary and tertiary education, specific language impairment in a bilingual context, the critical period in language acquisition, and the adequacy of testing methods to determine levels of competence in language acquisition. In all these types of research the presence of two or more languages in the input is crucial. This research is both socially relevant and theoretically significant. In the highly multilingual society of Amsterdam such research has an immediate social impact, on the development of curricula at schools, the treatment of language disorders, and the incorporation of immigrants into society. For linguistic theory, this type of research helps to gain insight into the language faculty and multilingual competence, the effects of language contact on linguistic systems, and into the question how such systems emerge in the brain and spread through the community of speakers. The task of the chair of Language Acquisition will be to lead and expand the study of language acquisition in the sense described above.

The professor is expected to determine the focus of all education and research relating to the chair, preferably in accordance with the Faculty’s designated research priority area. The professor will have wide-ranging (and preferably international) experience of university teaching and of supervising students at all academic levels. In addition, he/she must be able to demonstrate familiarity and affinity with ICT developments relevant to teaching and research. S/he can draw on an existing national and international network in the relevant field.

Where education is concerned, the new professor will be responsible for developing and maintaining a high-quality and appealing contribution which satisfies the curricular aims of the aforementioned study programmes. This shall be done in consultation with other staff. S/he will ensure that teaching programmes respond to society’s demand for graduates capable of making academic knowledge more accessible to a broad audience. The candidate must show willingness to collaborate with various other educational units both within the University and at other higher education institutions. In view of the Faculty’s general policy that academic staff should be capable of flexible deployment, the new professor must be prepared to teach in an interdisciplinary context as well as outside his/her direct field of expertise.
The successful candidate should have experience of teaching at all levels of university education and in all forms employed at the UvA (seminars, lectures and supervision of dissertations/theses and work experience placements) and also of the methods of assessment associated with each of these. S/he must possess teaching and educational skills of a high order and an approachable personality and manner. The candidate must have an excellent command of Dutch and English; any appointee lacking this level of linguistic competence will be expected to acquire it within two years of taking up the post.

The importance that the Faculty attaches to this chair is reflected in the standards set for candidates in terms of research experience. The professor’s area of research should reflect one of the Faculty’s research priority areas. S/he must be able to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the field by reference to major contributions to international discussions on Language Acquisition in the broad sense and publications, including articles in international academic journals and anthologies, as well as to contributions to the wider public debate.

In addition, the professor will be expected to undertake new research, including both independent work and larger-scale projects involving partners outside the Language and Literature department and the Faculty of Humanities. S/he must be capable of recruiting the necessary indirect government or private sector funding for this. Further duties include the supervision of doctorate students and postdocs, and candidates are expected to possess experience relevant to the exercise of these responsibilities. In addition, the new professor will be expected to maintain close contacts with the field, or to be in a position to establish such contacts.
Structural chairs at the Faculty of Humanities

Structural chairs at the Faculty of Humanities comprise disciplines with a relatively high aggregation level and are held by scientists who have broad authority in and knowledge of their disciplines as well as an individual specialism. Structural chairs serve to bolster education, research and PhD supervision and generate leadership capacity. The structural chairs in each department are housed in work pools. Depending on their composition, they may be chaired by the professor her-/himself, or on the basis of rotation if the group comprises more than one professor. The professors (in collaboration with the senior university lecturers) of each department hold shared responsibility for dividing leadership duties (such as annual consultations, the fulfilment of executive positions). Departments will ensure the fair division and rotation of executive and managerial duties. The structural chairs aim to serve the full breadth of the department in this regard. Professors provide PhD supervision in collaboration with the (senior) university lecturers at their department.

The appointee will have administrative responsibility for his/her own staff. First and foremost, this will require inspiring and supportive team leadership. By encouraging staff and providing constructive criticism, the new professor will help to advance the quality and effectiveness of University teaching and research. Specific means of achieving this will include regular team meetings with work pool staff and annual consultations and assessment interviews. Substantial evidence of practical experience in these areas is extremely desirable.

The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) for Language Sciences is a joint initiative of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics and two research institutes based at the Radboud University Nijmegen, the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour and the Centre for Language Studies. The research school offers an unrivalled training and research environment in the language sciences, allowing interdisciplinary work of the highest standard.

The IMPRS for Language Sciences is now advertising three doctoral fellowships in any field contributing to the language sciences, for example, linguistics, psycholinguistics, cognitive neuroscience of language, or language and genetics.

This position stems from the Faculty of Humanities’ decision to adopt Brain and Cognition as one of its three research priority areas for the next five years. The aim of the Brain and Cognition research priority area is to promote and deliver international, interdisciplinary, and leading-edge research in a rapidly evolving field of study.

The Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication (ACLC) carries out its research programme on Learnability within the context of this research priority area and gives a broad and novel interpretation to the notion of learnability, as a result of which it bridges research in a number of areas within linguistics, such as language acquisition, language change, and language typology. It does so by studying a number of related hypotheses. (1) The language data that children hear is impoverished, in the sense that (a) some crucial types of data may never appear in the child’s input, (b) the data that does appear only gives superficial information about the structures that generated the data in the speaker’s brain, and (c) the data will contain noise as a result of errors or ellipses by the speaker and as a result of imperfections in the transmission channels. On the basis of such impoverished input children will construct their own internal language. (2) When constructing their own language, the children will almost inevitably end up speaking somewhat differently from their parents and peers. Such changes will not only be apparent in the histories of single languages, but even more dramatically in second language acquisition (where learners start with an already present language system rather than from scratch) and in language creation processes such as creolization (where no single mother tongue is available). (3) By evoking change, learnability problems lead to typological variation between languages.

Given this set of hypotheses, the involvement of researchers with different types of orientations and research interests is necessary to come to grips with the issue of learnability in this wide sense. The ACLC is ideally placed to initiate this type of debate, as it is home to a highly diversified group of linguists, addressing linguistic issues from a wide variety of angles, and in a collaborative spirit.

Tasks
The professor of learnability should, apart from bringing a relevant and innovative research agenda to the programme, bring researchers working on individual aspects of the learnability problem together, formulate new, broad research programmes in which these researchers can collaborate, and acquire funding for these programmes. The candidate to be appointed will thus play an important leadership role in the Learnability research programme, and will furthermore create a bridge between ACLC research and research carried out at the ILLC. The ILLC participates in the research focus area Brain and Cognition with its research programme on Cognitive modeling. Apart from her/his involvement in the research priority area, the candidate will play a prominent role in teaching courses and in curriculum development in the general area of Learnability and Linguistics and will be actively involved in PhD supervision. The candidate is furthermore expected to be an ambassador of the priority area and actively liaise and work with stakeholders both within and outside of the university sector.

Requirements
The professor of Learnability of human languages must hold a PhD in Linguistics and demonstrate broad expertise and experience across multiple subareas of linguistics. The successful candidate will be able to contribute substantively to theoretical and methodological reflections on the study of learnability and engage actively in empirical research. She/he will have a strong international reputation, an excellent publication record, and a proven track record of acquiring external research funding.

The professor is expected to give direction to, and raise the profile of, research and teaching on the issue of learnability and linguistics more generally in the Faculty. The successful candidate will have broad working experience – including internationally – in university settings, and will have experience supervising graduate students and doctoral candidates. She/he will have an active international network.

A willingness to collaborate with various educational units, within and beyond the Faculty of Humanities, is needed. The professor must be willing and able to act as a liaison between the faculty’s research community and external cultural institutions (in the Netherlands and abroad) in developing the Faculty’s research agenda in the field Learnability of human languages. She/he is expected to secure external research funding for major projects and to supervise PhD candidates. Main responsibilities
The candidate is expected to initiate and conduct fundamental and applied
research in the Creative Computing (CC) research program. Within the
program, the research currently focuses on computational modeling of
cognitive processes, with application domains in language, vision, games
and social signal processing. Furthermore, the candidate contributes (both
in terms of teaching and organization) to the teaching program
Communication and Information Sciences, in particular in the track Human
Aspects of Information Technology (HAIT) and in the new track Data
Journalism. The candidate has an important task in acquiring external
projects and in managing tasks on the department and faculty level.
Experience with applying computational techniques to humanities research
in general is considered a bonus.

Profile
The responsibilities that come with this function call for a scientist
with a strong research and teaching background, preferably in
computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, data mining or other

De Grote Taaldag: TIN-dag en Anéla Juniorendag
De volgende TIN-dag wordt gehouden op zaterdag 4 februari 2012. Net als vorig jaar maakt de TIN-dag deel uit van de Grote Taaldag. Tijdens deze dag wordt parallel aan de TIN-dag ook de Anéla-juniorendag georganiseerd. Aansluitend volgt het jaarlijkse Taalgala, waarop ondermeer de Dissertatieprijs 2011 uitgereikt wordt. De Grote Taaldag vindt plaats op Drift 21 en 25; de TIN-dag op Drift 25 (en dus niet op het terrein van de Uithof, zoals vorig jaar!).

Inschrijven
Om een goed beeld te krijgen van het aantal aanwezigen op de Grote Taaldag/TIN-dag is het belangrijk dat u zich vóór 15 januari 2012 via de website van de AVT ( www.hum.leidenuniv.nl/onderzoek/avt) of van de Grote Taaldag ( www.grotetaaldag.nl) inschrijft.
Voor het bijwonen van de Grote Taaldag vragen wij een bijdrage (€15,- voor reguliere leden, €12,50 voor promovendi, €25,- voor niet-leden). Bij dit bedrag zijn inbegrepen koffie/thee , lunch en een afsluitende borrel. Wij verzoeken u het bedrag op uiterlijk 22 januari 2012 over te maken op rekeningnummer 474579 (ING) ten name van de AVT, onder vermelding van “TIN-dag 2012”.

Indienen van een samenvatting
Ieder AVT-lid dat op de TIN-dag een voordracht wil houden, wordt verzocht op uiterlijk maandag 12 december aanstaande een samenvatting van maximaal 170 woorden in te dienen via het invulformulier op de AVT-site ( www.hum.leidenuniv.nl/onderzoek/avt). Als u van plan of bereid bent uw lezing in het Engels te houden, kunt u dit aangeven met een Engelse titel en samenvatting in plaats van een Nederlandse. Leden mogen maximaal 2 samenvattingen indienen (1 als eerste auteur, 1 als co-auteur).
Als u geen bevestiging van ontvangst van uw samenvatting ontvangt, verdient het aanbeveling contact op te nemen met de AVT (a.de.boer(removeme)net.hcc.nl). Alleen bevestigde sprekers worden ingepland voor de TIN-dag. Mochten er meer sprekers zijn dan plaatsen in het programma, dan zullen de laatst ontvangen abstracts opgenomen worden als “alternates”.

De lezingen op de TIN-dag duren 20 minuten, gevolgd door een vragensessie van 10 minuten. Ook deze keer wordt een bundel Linguistics in the Netherlands samengesteld. Sprekers kunnen na de TIN-dag een schriftelijke versie van hun lezing aanbieden aan de redactie, die op basis van referentenrapporten beslist of het paper voor publicatie in de LIN-bundel in aanmerking komt.
Het programmaboekje van de TIN-dag (inclusief samenvattingen) zal in de loop van december op de AVT-site verschijnen.

Call for papers for Congress on Adjectives, 29 March-30 March, 2012, Amsterdam, University of Amsterdam (ACLC) . Deadline: December 16 2011
Although the Germanic and Romance languages are two branches of the same language family and both have developed the adjective as a separate morphological and syntactic category, the syntax and semantics of adjectives is by no means the same in these two language groups. The goal of this conference is to map the differences and similarities in meaning and syntactic behavior of the Germanic and Romance adjective, and to find an answer to the question: are the (dis)similarities the result of autonomous development in each of the two branches of the Indo-European language family or are they caused by language contact.

Topics to be discussed at the conference may include (but are not limited to) the following:

- adjectival agreement
- weak and strong adjectives

The Sixth European Dialect Syntax Workshop is organized by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Cambridge, in cooperation with the Meertens Institute and the Edisyn project ( www.dialectsyntax.org). It will take place at Queens’ College, Cambridge, on March 31st, 2012. It will be preceded by The Second Cambridge Colloquium on the ‘Histories of the Ibero-Romance languages’–Norman MacColl Symposium 2012, to be held 28-30 March 2012 at Queens’ College, Cambridge; and it will be immediately followed on 1st April 2012 (Queens’ College, Cambridge) by the workshop on Romeyka and Asia Minor Greek, the second instalment of a series of workshops on Greek dialectal syntax, Romeyka, in particular, and Asia Minor Greek, in general.

The general goal of Edisyn (an ESF-funded project which runs from 2005 - 2012 at the Meertens Institute and whose labours continue to bear fruits) is to stimulate international cooperation in the study of European dialect syntax, which is a rapidly growing field. The workshop this year does not have a specific theme, but on previous years we examined doubling phenomena and dative constructions; therefore, this year we would be keen on receiving abstracts for papers in other areas of the grammar, for instance, complementation, information structure, and wh-clauses, although no thematic restrictions apply. We continue to welcome project presentations by new members to the Edisyn network. If the number of new project presentations is high enough we will organize a poster session during the workshop.
Submissions are limited to 1 single authored and 1 jointly authored abstract. Abstracts should not exceed 2 pages including figures, examples and references, with 1-inch margins and in fonts no smaller than 12-point. The 2012 Federated Conference on Computer Science and Information Systems cordially invites you to consider contributing an event (conference, symposium, workshop, consortium meeting, special session). The FedCSIS multi-conference consists of a significant number of recurring Events, but proposals for new associated events are welcome until January 11, 2012. The Events can run over any span of time within the conference dates; from half-day to three days.

You are welcome to the city that has gained the titles of „the Meeting Place of Poland” and „the Venice of Poland.” With over a thousand years of history, Wroclaw is the city where as many as 10 Nobel Prize winners lived, and which provides education to as many as 120,000 students enrolled in the city's universities. Wroclaw is the co-host of Euro 2012 - European Football Championships and it was chosen as the 2016 European Capital of Culture, which illustrates diversity of its strengths.

GOALS

The FedCSIS Events provide a platform for bringing together researchers, practitioners, and academia to present and discuss ideas, challenges, and potential solutions on established or emerging topics related to research and practice in computer science and information systems. The Events will be selected based on the scientific/technical interest and/or their relevance to practitioners in their topics, the clarity of the proposal in addressing the requested information, the innovativeness of the Event topics, and the capacity in the FedCSIS multi-conference program.

PUBLICATIONS

As in previous years, papers accepted and presented at any Event will be published in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library proceedings (pending), and on USB memory stick given to FedCSIS participants. The IEEE proceedings will be published under an ISBN number and under nonexclusive copyright. Such copyright implies that Events' organizers can and, indeed, are strongly encouraged to invite extended and revised papers for post-conference publications in high-quality journals, edited volumes, etc.

EVENT PROPOSALS

Event proposals should include the following information (2 pages maximum):

1. The nature of the Event.

2. The title the Event, and a clear description of the topic, including a brief justification.

3. The complete contact information of the Event organizers, including a link to their personal websites, and an overview of previous experiences with organization of scientific events.

4. Indication of the expected number of papers/attendees to attend the Event.

5. Information of expected post-event publications, of extended and revised papers, in high-quality journals, edited volumes, etc.

ORGANIZATIONAL RULES


1. Each Event is considered a satellite event of FedCSIS. All basic information about the Event, including its Call for Papers and a link to the FedCSIS-provided Paper Submission System, will be published in a unified form on the FedCSIS website.


2. The Event's chair(s) may publish a more complete and up-to-date information on other websites, but all references to the event must mention its association with the FedCSIS.


3. The FedCSIS organizers will widely announce and advertise all multi-conference events, but the Event's chair(s) should advertise their Event, to the best of their ability, through their own channels and solicit submissions.


4. The Event's chair(s) manage the paper reviewing process through the FedCSIS-provided OpenConf conference management system. The review process must adhere to the IEEE guidelines published at www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/organizers/paper_review_process.html The process will also need to adhere to the more specific quality-assuring FedCSIS guidelines defining among others the expected acceptance rate for papers, conflict of interest principles, etc.


5. The paper submission formats are specified by the FedCSIS. The total length of a paper should not exceed 8 pages and should be formatted according to an IEEE style template made available to the authors from the FedCSIS site. Only papers submitted personally by the author(s) into the conference submission systems can be subjected to review and potential acceptance. Each paper will receive at least two reviews prior to the acceptance/rejection decision.


6. All the due dates for paper submissions, author notifications, camera-ready submissions and registrations are the same for all FedCSIS Events. However, some deadlines may be modified based on justified requests by the Event's chair(s).


7. An Event with less than ten accepted papers/presentations is deemed to fall below the expectations for an autonomous event. Subject to negotiations with the event's organizers, such an event may be canceled or included as a special session of papers in another thematically-close Event.


8. The Event's chair(s) ought to prepare the final program in a publishable format according to the formatting guidelines provided by the FedCSIS organizers.


9. The Event's chair(s) need to coordinate the Event sessions, stimulate discussion, and will be asked to submit an Event Report to the FedCSIS organizers.


10. Registration of participants, and all financial and local arrangements are managed by the FedCSIS organizers.

Leuven Statistics Days 2012: Mixed models and modern multivariate methods in linguistics

Following the tradition of celebrating statistics at K.U.Leuven, we are glad to announce the biennial Leuven Statistics Days 2012, to be held in Leuven on June 7 and 8, 2012. This edition’s theme is “Mixed models and modern multivariate methods in linguistics”. This international Leuven-based meeting warmly welcomes everyone interested in the methodological and applied themes. Through excellent invited speakers, a number of fine contributions, and a panel discussion, the meeting organizers aim to reach their twofold goal: (1) provide an exchange forum for statistical methods in linguistics and (2) stimulate cross-fertilization, centered around the methodological themes, between researchers in linguistics, bioinformatics, computer science, data mining, engineering, bio-engineering, imaging, and medical statistics, to name but a few.

Contributed presentations (oral and poster) are very welcome. To stimulate interaction, the entire meeting is held in a plenary format. Therefore, the number of oral slots available is limited. However, also a poster session will be organized with the explicit aim of fostering interaction.

Vervangingssubsidie geesteswetenschappen opgeheven per 1-1-2012
Let op: Vervangingssubsidie geesteswetenschappen wordt met ingang van 1 januari 2012 opgeheven. Alleen aanvragen die voor deze datum zijn ingediend, worden in behandeling genomen.

Het doel van Vervangingssubsidie geesteswetenschappen is om buitenuniversitaire promovendi op het terrein van de geesteswetenschappen de gelegenheid te geven hun proefschrift af te ronden door hem of haar tijdelijk vrij te stellen van betaalde werkzaamheden. De subsidie dient om de kosten te vergoeden die de werkgever van de promovenda/promovendus moet maken om tijdelijk, voor de duur van de projectperiode, een vervanger aan te stellen.


Aanvraagprocedure
Wie kan aanvragen

De hoogleraar die tevens zijn of haar promotor is, dient aan te vragen voor de (buitenuniversitaire) promovendus/promovenda.

Wat kan aangevraagd worden

Een vervangingssubsidie voor een termijn van maximaal één jaar, verstrekt in de vorm van een lump sum waarmee de werkgever van de promovendus/promovenda de kosten van vervanging kan dekken. Er wordt een maximum van 50.000 euro per aanvraag gehanteerd. De werkgever dient gevestigd te zijn in Nederland.

Aanvragen voor een Vervangingssubsidie kunnen alleen ingediend worden als aan de volgende voorwaarden wordt voldaan:

het onderzoek van evident belang is voor de Geesteswetenschappen.
het een proefschrift betreft waarvan het onderzoek afgerond is en de subsidie wordt aangewend voor de schrijffase die tot definitieve afronding van het proefschrift moet leiden;
het onderzoek betreft dat niet eerder gefinancierd is.
Wanneer kan aangevraagd worden

Let op: Vervangingssubsidie geesteswetenschappen wordt met ingang van 1 januari 2012 opgeheven. Alleen aanvragen die voor deze datum zijn ingediend, worden in behandeling genomen.

Aanvragen voor subsidies in het kader van de persoonsgebonden Vervangingssubsidie kunnen tot 01 januari 2012 doorlopend worden ingediend. De besluitvorming vindt doorlopend plaats in de reguliere vergaderingen van het Gebiedsbestuur Geesteswetenschappen. De beoordelingsprocedure neemt doorgaans vier maanden in beslag.

Op basis van alle stukken (de aanvraag, de uitgebrachte adviezen en het weerwoord) besluit het gebiedsbestuur Geesteswetenschappen over het al dan niet toekennen van de vervangingssubsidie.

Het project OAPEN-NL heeft tot doel te onderzoeken hoe het Open Access-uitgeven van boeken het beste kan verlopen. Voor dat onderzoek wordt een fonds of bibliotheek gevormd van enkele tientallen Open Access-boeken. Uitgevers kunnen een aanvraag indienen bij OAPEN-NL.

Er zijn inmiddels twee beoordelingsrondes geweest. De derde en tegelijk laatste ronde van OAPEN-NL heeft als deadline 15 februari 2012.

Internationalisering in de geesteswetenschappen (NWO): Deadline 1 maart 2012
Het Gebiedsbestuur Geesteswetenschappen wil met behulp van dit subsidie-instrument de internationale samenwerking tussen Nederlandse onderzoeksgroepen en hun buitenlandse collega's bevorderen, internationale netwerkvorming in de geesteswetenschappen stimuleren en geesteswetenschappelijke aanvragen bij internationale instellingen aanmoedigen.
