For the past 23 years, the European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information (ESSLLI) has been organized every year by the Association for Logic, Language and Information (FoLLI) in different sites around Europe. The main focus of ESSLLI is on the interface between linguistics, logic and computation.

ESSLLI offers foundational, introductory and advanced courses, as well as workshops, covering a wide variety of topics within the three areas of interest: Language and Computation, Language and Logic, and Logic and Computation. Previous summer schools have been highly successful, attracting up to 500 students from Europe and elsewhere. The school has developed into an important meeting place and forum for discussion for students and researchers interested in the interdisciplinary study of Logic, Language and Information. During two weeks, around 50 courses and 10 workshops are offered to the attendants, each of 1.5 hours per day during a five days week, with up to seven parallel sessions. ESSLLI also includes a student session (papers and posters by students only, 1.5 hour per day during the two weeks) and four evening lectures by senior scientists in the covered areas.

In 2011, ESSLLI will held in Ljubljana, Slovenia and will be organized by the Slovenian Language Technologies Society (SDJT), the Jo˛ef Stefan Institute (IJS) and The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics

Linguapolis, the Institute for Language and Communication of the University of Antwerp, conducts, from 21 to 26 August 2011, a Summer School course on qualitative and quantitative research methods in language learning and teaching:

A Toolbox for Design-Based Research

Lecturers are: Sven De Maeyer, PhD and Vincent Donche, PhD (Institute for Education and Information Sciences, University of Antwerp).

The course will focus on methodological considerations in designing and conducting empirical research. We will highlight the practical issues involved in the use of qualitative and quantitative research methods. Insight will be given into the most commonly used data-collection techniques such as surveys, interviews, and observation. Further we will analyse how to generate more data-driven conclusions.

The target group are researchers in language learning and teaching who need to investigate user data or results of specific design practices and experiments in a more evidence-based manner. At the end of the course each participant gets a personal consult with the lectures to discuss current research.

The number of participants is limited to 25. Timely registration (or reservation) is therefore necessary. At this moment we still have 10 places available.

We are happy to announce that “The World of Reflexives” workshop is going to be held at Utrecht University on August 25-27, 2011.

Our workshop is focusing on universals capturing cross-linguistic similarities in conditions on anaphoric relations. All languages have elements that for their interpretation may or must depend on another element (their antecedent). One of the approaches to explain the cross-linguistic patterns of anaphora is by decomposing them into more elementary principles, in part language independent (Everaert 1986, Reinhart & Reuland 1991, 1993, Reuland 2001, 2011). The internal structure of a reflexive and the properties of its subparts can also give clues on how the dependency relations are established.

The aim of the workshop is to bring together theoretical linguists and language experts and to discuss a wide range of anaphora related phenomena in less described languages.

Shared grammaticalization refers to the state whereby two or more languages have the input and the output of a grammaticalization process in common. The shared grammaticalization may have arisen independently in each of them by universal principles of grammatical change, it may have been induced by language contact, or it may have been inherited, either from the ancestral language, when the languages were one and the same or through “parallel drift”, after the languages were disconnected. Universal principles are at work, for instance, in the shared grammaticalization of a verb ‘go’ into a future marker by genealogically and areally unrelatable languages such as English in Europe, Zulu in Africa, Quechua in South America and Tamil in Asia. A classical example of contact-induced grammaticalization is the copying of aspectual meanings on certain originally independent verbs, such as the copying of progressive aspect on the verb eraman ‘to carry’ in southern Basque under influence of the grammaticalized progressive meaning of the Spanish verb llevar ‘to carry’ (Jendraschek 2007: 157). A prototypical case of inheritance is the shared grammaticalization of the Romance future markers; Romance languages globally share a root for the verb ‘have’ such as French avoir, Spanish haber, Portuguese haver and Italian avere as well as the grammaticalized future marker as in French chante-rons, Spanish canta-ré, Portuguese canta-rei and Italian cante-rémo ‘we will sing’, reflecting a process of grammaticalization that took place in the ancestral language.

The approaches taken by the speakers will be either theoretical, reflecting upon shared grammaticalization in a cross-linguistic sample of languages, or experimental, investigating shared grammaticalization between two or more Transeurasian languages or between a Transeurasian language and unrelated languages. We use Transeurasian in reference to a large group of geographically adjacent languages, traditionally known as “Altaic”. They share a significant number of linguistic properties and include at most five different linguistic families: Japonic, Koreanic, Tungusic, Mongolic and Turkic.

The goal of the workshop is to shed light on instances of shared grammaticalization and the factors triggering them, with a special focus on the Transeurasian languages.

Specific issues to be addressed include, among others:

- Is it possible to distinguish between the different determinants of shared grammaticalization: universals, contact or inheritance?

- What is the exact impact of language contact and common ancestorship on the grammaticalisation process?

- Is it possible to borrow grammaticalization per se, as a historical process?

- Heine and Kuteva (2005) delimit their description of contact-induced grammaticalization to selective semantic copying, in their terms “replication”, but are there examples of globally copied grammaticalization?

- Where do instances of so-called “grammatical accomodation” (Aikhenvald 2002: 5, 239; 2007: 24), namely the development of a native morpheme on the model of the syntactic function of a phonetically similar morpheme in the model language, fit in? Are these cases of contact-induced grammaticalization?

- Do we find examples of “parallel drift” (Sapir 1921: 157-182, LaPolla 1994) in the Transeurasian languages or beyond? Is there evidence to support this specific type of grammaticalization in genealogical units whereby under influence of a common origin the same grammaticalization processes occur repeatedly but independently in each of the languages?

Complexity, accuracy, and fluency (CAF) have figured as major research variables in applied linguistic research. At the same time, questions concerning the definition and operationalization of these variables are still subject to debate and reoccur for various types of linguistic data being analyzed. This also applies to the analysis of corpora containing free spoken data which are frequently used in, e.g., research on language development or the analysis of natural discourse. In these cases, additional experimental assessments of a speaker’s proficiency may not always be possible, and the complexity, accuracy, and fluency of a given speaker have to be assessed on the basis of natural speech only. However, natural speech is
characterized by the spontaneity with which it is produced, and it can be expected to contain pauses, retracings, speech errors, and other distinct features. This has the effect that many different speech characteristics have to be considered during analysis and that different speakers may be difficult to compare. To approach these challenges, the symposium aims at defining and operationalizing the CAF variables with regard to corpora containing free spoken data. The CAF framework is commonly used in L2 acquisition / L1 attrition research. In these areas, contrastive analysis can serve as a useful tool when deciding how to assess accuracy. The second aim of the symposium is therefore to discuss the role that contrastive analysis can play when analyzing CAF.

For this symposium we have invited three leading figures/scholars in the area of CAF and Contrastive Analysis who will share their expertise on analyzing free spoken data with respect to the three dimensions complexity, accuracy, and fluency. Participants will be given the opportunity to enter into discussion with the experts and ask questions.

The symposium is addressed to researchers interested in the CAF framework and researchers working with free spoken data in the areas of attrition, acquisition, and discourse. Conference Going Romance, Utrecht (UIL OTS), December 8-10 2011
Going Romance is the European conference series that focuses on Romance languages from the perspective of current linguistic theorizing. In the two decades of its existence, it has developed into the major European discussion forum for theoretically relevant research on Romance languages where current ideas about language in general and about Romance languages in particular are discussed.

The conference lasts for three days, with at least two days for the general session. Slots for invited speakers are 60 minutes (45+15), while slots for selected speakers are 40 minutes (30+10). The conference may include a one-day workshop with a theme depending on the initiatives of the steering committee or the local organisation.

Going Romance is organised every year, in the first half of December. The call for papers is issued and distributed before summer, with a submission deadline in the first half of September. Around half October the definitive program is established.

This "all Dutch" initiative for Romance languages differs from most other initiatives in the field. It is a conference that considers the Romance languages as the dominant object of closer scrutiny (most other colloquia in the home countries accept contributions on other languages); the lingua franca of the conference is English (most other colloquia in the home countries accept contributions in the mother tongue). Going Romance is generally considered to be the European counterpart to the American LSRL (Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages). In 2008 the steering committee decided that its "European" aims may lead to venues other than in the Netherlands once every two years.

The World Universities Forum is held annually in different locations around the world. The Forum was held in Davos, Switzerland in 2008 and 2010; in conjunction with the Indian Institute of Technology - Bombay, Mumbai, India in 2009; and it was hosted by the Hong Kong Institute of Education in 2011.

The 2012 World Universities Forum is being held in Rhodes, Greece. The island sits at the Crossroads between the Middle East, Africa and Europe. This has given the city a long history of different cultures, identities and languages. Rhodes is famous as the site of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It also contains the citadel of Rhodes, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe.

Plenary speakers, parallel paper, workshop and colloquium presentations will be made by researchers and administrators from a wide range of fields, institutions and geographical locations. Participants are invited to submit a presentation proposal for a 30-minute paper, 60-minute workshop, or a jointly presented 90-minute colloquium session.

Presenters may also choose to submit their written papers for publication in the peer-refereed Journal of the World Universities Forum. Those who are unable to attend the conference in person are welcome to submit a virtual registration, which allows for submission of a paper for refereeing and possible publication in the journal, as well as an option to upload a video presentation to the conference YouTube channel.

The deadline for the next round in the call for papers (a title and short abstract) is 12 May 2011. Future deadlines will be announced on the conference website after this date. Duties and Responsibilities
UCL invites applications for a lectureship in neurolinguistics/psycholinguistics from candidates with an excellent research and publication record. The main purposes of the job are to carry out research in neurolinguistics/psycholinguistics, to oversee Masters teaching relating to Linguistics and Neuroscience and to contribute to the departmental teaching in these areas, to supervise graduate and undergraduate students, and to take a share of the administrative duties in the department. A grade 8 appointment will be considered for applicants who have previous experience of directing graduate programmes depending on their further profile.

The successful applicant will start work at UCL on 1 January 2012.

Aan het departement Taalkunde (onderzoeksgroep: IPrA Research Center) van de Universiteit Antwerpen is een plaats vacant voor

een voltijds projectmedewerker/doctoraatsstudent (m/v) in het kader van het FWO-onderzoeksproject Smells like teen spirit? Tienertaal, attitudes en identiteitspraktijken in multi-etnische stedelijke vriendengroepen.

Situering van het project

Het taalgebruik van tieners staat de laatste jaren flink in de belangstelling. Taalkundigen wijzen erop dat in zowat alle West-Europese landen grootschalig dialectverlies plaatsvindt, maar dat dat geen toename van standaardtaalgebruik met zich meebrengt. Vooral tieners lijken een substandaard of tussentaal te verkiezen en zich steeds minder zorgen te maken om spellingsregels en andere conventies. In stedelijke, multi-etnische contexten valt bovendien op dat jongeren accenten overnemen of talen met elkaar beginnen te vermengen en dat vervolgens als ‘hun’ taal of zelfs als ‘de nieuwe taal’ voorstellen. Deze ontwikkelingen leiden geregeld naar ongerustheid (‘waar gaat het Nederlands naartoe?’), naar nieuwe beleidsinitiatieven (‘iedereen moet Algemeen Nederlands spreken’), en naar een versterkte afkeuring van stedelijke en hedendaagse taalfenomenen (‘geen creolisering van het Nederlands!’, ‘geen sms-taal!’). Veel wijst er echter op dat Vlaamse steden in de toekomst er nog een stuk diverser zullen uitzien dan vandaag het geval is en dat meertalige, elektronische communicatie een nog prominenter deel zal uitmaken van het leven en de identiteit van jonge stedelingen. Bovendien zijn er amper data beschikbaar over concreet, dagelijks taalgebruik onder tieners in de stad en over hoe ze zich daarmee verhouden tot elkaar en de rest van de stad en/of samenleving. Dit project wil daarom op een etnografische manier beschrijven en onderzoeken welke taalpraktijk, attitudes en identiteitspraktijken zich voordoen onder tieners in één etnisch gemengde vriendengroep in Antwerpen, en deze casus vergelijken met internationale voorbeelden.


Een projectmedewerker/doctoraatsstudent die:

- een doctoraat wil voorbereiden en afwerken;

- weet hoe een academische tekst moet geschreven worden en een groot analytisch vermogen heeft;

- geen enkel probleem heeft met het lezen en verwerken van Engelstalige academische artikels;

- erg communicatievaardig is, en – omdat het om een taalkundig-etnografisch project gaat – de veilige grenzen van de eigen discipline durft overschrijden;

- mogelijk over actieve of passieve kennis van een courante minderheidstaal beschikt.


Licentiaat of Master in de Taal- en Letterkunde, of in een andere relevante discipline met aantoonbare aandacht voor de studie van sociaal gedrag en taalgebruik.

Graden strekken tot aanbeveling.

The proposed workshop focuses on the interaction of form and meaning of linguistic expressions with questions indiscourse. It is well known that such an interaction exists, for instance, focus in an answer often corresponds to the wh-word in an explicit or implicit question, and some verbs can even embed overt or concealed questions. Recently, however, important progress has been achieved in this regard.

On the one hand, it has been shown that questions, in particular the question under discussion, affects the interpretation of natural language utterances more deeply than previously assumed, for instance, the interpretation ofdiscourseparticles seem to strongly depend on the question under discussion (Beaver & Clark 2008) and even classical phenomena such as presupposition projection have recently been argued to depend on the question under discussion in a substantial way (Simons et al 2010).

On the other hand, recent developments in Inquisitive Semantics (Groenendijk & Roelofsen 2009) suggests that the class of natural language expressions that give rise to alternatives and invite the hearer to choose between these alternative includes not only questions but also all kinds of expressions related to disjunction and indefinites. This gives a new perspective on the meaning of natural language expressions in general as suggesting one or more potential updates of the common ground, and it gives rise to new tools in pragmatics e.g. for the computation of quantity implicatures and the grammatical structure of answers.
We invite theoretical papers or case studies that discuss the ways in which questions can be captured in adiscoursemodel, the interaction of questions with the interpretation of other expressions, and the inquisitive nature of disjunctive, indefinite, and interrogative constructions.

North American Summer School in Logic, Language and Information 2012

The fifth NASSLLI (after previous editions at Stanford University, Indiana University and UCLA) will be hosted at the University of Texas at Austin, on June 18 - 22, 2012. The summer school, loosely modeled on the long- running ESSLLI series in Europe, will consist of a number of courses and workshops, selected on the basis of the proposals. By default, courses and workshops meet for 90 minutes on each of five days.

Proposals are invited that present interdisciplinary work between the areas of logic, linguistics, computer science, cognitive science, philosophy and artificial intelligence, though work in just one area is within the scope of the summer school if it can be applied in other fields. Examples of possible topics would include e.g. logics for communication, computational semantics, game theory (for logic, language and/or computation), dynamic semantics, modal logics, linear logic, machine learning techniques, statistical language models, and automated theorem proving. We encourage potential course or workshop contributors to check out previous programs at:

Courses and workshops should aim to be accessible to an interdisciplinary, graduate level audience. Courses may certainly focus on a single area, but lecturers should then include introductory background, try to avoid specialized notation that cannot be applied more widely, and spend time on the question of how the topic is relevant to other fields. A workshop can be more accessible if its program is bracketed by broader-audience talks that introduce and summarize the week's presentations.

Associated Workshops/Conferences: In addition to courses and workshops taking place during the main NASSLLI five day session, NASSLLI welcomes proposals for 1-3 day workshops or conferences hosted on campus immediately before or after the summer school, thus on the weekends of June 15-17 and June 23-25 2012. Previous such associated meetings have included the Dynamic Epistemic Logic Workshop, the Mathematics of Language conference, and the Theoretical Aspects of Reasoning About Knowledge (TARK) conference.

Financial Details:

A course may be taught by one or two persons. Conference fees are waived for all instructors. However, we are only able to pay for the full travel and expenses of one instructor per course. If two persons are lecturing, they may share a lump sum paid for both. We must also stress that while proposals from all over the world are welcomed, the Summer School can in general guarantee only to reimburse travel costs for travel from destinations within North America to Texas, although exceptions can be made depending on the financial situation.
Furthermore, we encourage all lecturers to fund their own travel if this is feasible, since this will allow us to use our available funding for student scholarships.

Workshops are more complicated financially than courses, and a proposal for a workshop should include a plan to obtain some outside funding for the speakers.

Call for papers for Workshop over grammaticalisatie en degrammaticalisatie in het Nederlands, Université Catholique de Louvain, 24-25 mei 2012. Deadline: 1 September 2011
Grammaticalisatie is nog steeds een van de belangrijkste onderzoeksdomeinen binnen de taalkunde, onder meer aan de Belgische en Nederlandse universiteiten. Paradoxaal genoeg wordt er echter relatief weinig onderzoek gedaan over grammaticalisatiefenomenen in het Nederlands zelf. Dit geldt des te meer voor het onderzoek over degrammaticalisatie, een fenomeen dat zijn eigen plekje verdient binnen het onderzoek over taalverandering.
De bedoeling van deze tweedaagse workshop is theoretische en empirische bijdragen bijeen te brengen over grammaticalisatie en degrammaticalisatie in het Nederlands. Ook bijdragen die het Nederlands vergelijken met andere talen zijn van harte welkom.

Formal semantics as a field of linguists undergoes a rapid change with respect to the status of quantitative methodologies, the application of which is gradually becoming a standard in the field, replacing the good old 'armchair' methodology. In light of this development, we invite submissions reporting of high level formal semantic research benefiting from the use of a quantitative methodology, corpora-based, experimental, neurolinguistic, computational or other. Ideal presentations include informed reflections on the role of a particular methodology in formal semantics.
We welcome submissions focusing on wide spread, yet not unproblematic or elusive semantic-pragmatic concepts such as 'context', 'accommodation', 'question under discussion', 'ordering source', and so forth; what methodologies can shed new light on such notions and the way they might be systematically studied and decoded?
What kind of experimental evidence (if any) can bear on fundamental issues such as the nature of the semantic lexicon on the one hand, and compositionality and projection on the other? What is the nature of semantic infelicity or markedness? What kind of experimental evidence (if any) can support or refute hypotheses concerning the nature of the logical form or its very existence? Concerning empty categories?
Finally, can formal semantic tools contribute to our understanding of experimental results and theoretical issues within cognitive psychology as pertaining to natural language semantics?

De Vereniging voor Limburgse Dialect- en Naamkunde looft eens per twee jaar een prijs uit voor de beste universitaire afstudeerscriptie (BA, MA of anderszins) op het gebied van de taalkunde of naamkunde van het Limburgs (of direct aangrenzende dialecten).
Met deze prijs wil de vereniging het taalkundig onderzoek naar het Limburgs stimuleren. De beste inzending wordt beloond met 500 euro en een aanbod tot publicatie van een samenvatting in het Jaarboek van de VLDN. De winnaar wordt bekend gemaakt op het congres van de VLDN, 26 november 2011 te Venray. Scripties moeten op papier en digitaal worden ingezonden. Questions and answers are a major topic in semantics and pragmatics, and to some extent in logic and philosophy as well. This interest ininquisitivenessgoes beyond the interpretation of questions as such. For example, questions are widely assumed to play a structural role in the analysis of discourse. Workshop: The theme of the workshop is syntactic variation and focuses on the data of Romance languages that can be used to define the position of Romance from a typological perspective (‘meso’ variation). Workshop description
There are different ways in which conceptual salience may influence the acquisition of morphology. For example, one of the reasons that nouns are acquired faster than adjectives is that the prototypical referents of nouns (i.e. objects) are more salient and more easily accessible to a child than relatively abstract properties denoted by adjectives. Some concepts, such as agentivity, causality, possession and number, are so salient that children may attempt to express them even before they have started acquiring the morphological form associated with that particular meaning.

On the other hand, children are from early on highly sensitive to the distributional properties of the linguistic input addressed to them. Whereas high token frequency leads to entrenchment and storage as “chunk“, type frequency and morphotactic transparency play an important role in the recognition of analogies and the extraction of regularities between morphological patterns. Consequently, the acquisition of morphology may also influence the formation of concepts and determine which concepts would become more salient than others.

Moreover, languages may differ with respect to which specific concepts are expressed morphologically. Accordingly, a number of cross-linguistic investigations demonstrate that children’s attention is channeled towards different aspects of a situation depending on which portions of the conceptual space are grammaticized in the target language.

We invite contributions exploring this complex relationship between the conceptual development of a child and the acquisition of morphology using a variety of state-of-the-art methods of psycholinguistic research. A special focus of the workshop will be on cross-linguistic comparisons.

This workshop is part of the 15th International Morphology Meeting held in Vienna on February 9-12, 2012.

Het CEP is een laagdrempelig stimuleringsprogramma voor wetenschappelijke samenwerking op alle wetenschapsgebieden tussen Nederland en China. Het programma stimuleert mobiliteit van onderzoekers en maakt verkenningen voor nieuwe samenwerkingsverbanden mogelijk.

Het CEP kan een duwtje in de rug geven om langdurige samenwerking op te zetten met China. Velen gingen u reeds voor: het programma dat is gefinancierd door het Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap, bestaat inmiddels meer dan dertig jaar.

Binnen het CEP kunnen twee typen subsidie aangevraagd worden:

Individuele bezoeken China-Nederland v.v.
Deze subsidie is bedoeld voor senior wetenschappers met de intentie om langdurige samenwerking op te zetten
Gezamenlijke onderzoeksprojecten
Deze subsidie is bedoeld voor gezamenlijke onderzoeksprojecten van een Nederlandse en een Chinese onderzoeksgroep van een universiteit of wetenschappelijk instituut
Op dit moment kunnen er aanvragen worden ingediend voor gezamenlijke onderzoeksprojecten. De deadline voor het indienen van deze aanvragen is 15 september 2011. Aanvragen voor individuele bezoeken kunnen gedurende het hele jaar worden ingediend.

Biografie over Sittardse taalkundige Willy Dols
Ter herdenking van de 100e geboortedag van Willy Dols is op 14 maart j.l. diens biografie verschenen: Willy Dols 1911 – 1944; een verwachting die niet in vervulling mocht gaan. De auteur Lei Limpens beschrijft het korte leven van deze Sittardse taalkundige, wiens carričre door het optreden van de Duitsers bruut afgebroken werd. Hoogtepunt van zijn wetenschappelijk onderzoek in zijn korte leven was het proefschrift Sittardse Diftongering over het dialect van zijn geboortestad, dat hij tijdens de oorlog onder moeilijke omstandigheden wist te voltooien.

Op 21 maart 2011 was het honderd jaar geleden dat de Sittardenaar Willy Dols geboren is. Hij was een veelbelovend geleerde die aan het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog op tragische wijze om het leven gekomen is. Tijdens zijn studie al publiceerde hij een aantal artikelen op taalkundig gebied waarin hij reeds blijk gaf van zijn grote interesse voor het Limburgse dialect. Zijn in 1953 postuum uitgegeven proefschrift wordt gerekend tot de beste die in Nederland ooit over een taalkundig onderwerp geschreven zijn.
De neerlandicus Lei Limpens heeft het leven van deze geleerde beschreven in een boek waarbij hij ook aandacht schenkt aan het wetenschappelijk werk van Willy Dols. Zo geeft de auteur voor een breed publiek een samenvatting van Dols’ gepubliceerde en niet-gepubliceerde werk, waaruit de brede belangstelling van deze erudiete geleerde blijkt. Verder onder andere de nog nooit gepubliceerde recensie van J.P.C. Kats, Het phonologisch en morphologisch systeem van het Roermondsch dialect uit1939.
