LOT Announcements / events
From the LOT Bureau
In the past two and a half weeks the LOT website was inaccessible due to technical problems. As a consequence, the Newsletter has not been distributed, and the registration page of the LOT Summerschool was offline. The problem has been solved; the website, including the registration page, are now in working order again since the previous week, tuesday 12.30h.
N.B.: The Summerschool registration page was reopened for UIL OTS affiliates at an earlier time. Those UIL OTS members who have already registered for the Summerschool do not need to do this again."

Unfortunately, these technical problems also affected our LOT Newsletter distribution mailinglists. Hopefully these problems have been completely solved and the lists are protected and inaccessible again.

If you want to subsribe or unsubsribe for the LOT Newsletter or send in articles, please use our mailaddress: lot(removeme)uu.nl

Title: Adjectives as a distinct class in Eastern Riffian (Barber, Afroasiatic)

Abstract: It has been a matter of significant debate amongst linguists whether all languages have a word class of adjectives, which is different from both nouns and verbs (cf. Dixon 2004). In Berber linguistics, it has been typical to treat “property words” as either a sub-class of nouns (e.g. Kabyle, Chaker 1985) or a sub-class of verbs (e.g. Tuareg, Prasse 2009).However, on closer inspection we see that these analyses tend to privilege one morpho-syntactic property over any others. In this paper, using data from Eastern Riffian, I argue that, when all relevant facts are taken into account, adjectives can be established as a distinct word class.

Workshop Relations in Relativity, International Max Planck Research School for Language Sciences (IMPRS), Radboud University Nijmegen, May 9-11 2012
It is our great pleasure to announce the first International Max Planck Research School for Language Sciences student-organized workshop:

Relations in Relativity: New Perspectives on Language and Thought
May 9 to 11, 2012

Does the language we speak influence the way we think? This question of linguistic relativity, most famously raised by Benjamin Whorf, has been a strong point of debate over the decades. An emerging view that reconciles the empirical evidence is that thought is neither determined by language nor completely free of its influence. This workshop aims to take this idea further and ask the resulting questions: How does language influence thought? In which domains? When do language effects kick in? And why is it important?

The workshop centers around two discussions and a panel session and will be supplemented by student presentations.

The first conversation is a perspectives discussion on the mechanisms of linguistic relativity. Three invited guests will present their ideas for how language affects thought. Each speaker will first present a case study that best illustrates his or her position and propose mechanisms which account for the reported effects. The speakers will then discuss the proposed mechanisms and possible alternatives.

The second debate extends the linguistic relativity question to the domain of phonology. It has long been known that as a baby learns a specific language its ability to discriminate between sound contrasts not found in that particular language decreases. While this is not a classic case of linguistic relativity, it is a strong example of the effects that language can have on general cognitive processing. This debate not only brings this topic into the language and thought discussion, but also raises the question of when language effects kick in. Are low levels of auditory perception affected, or does language experience only influence perceptual categorization at a later stage?

We conclude the workshop with an open discussion between invited and local experts on the relevance of linguistic relativity. Why should we be studying it? How does it impact our everyday lives?

Workshop Empirical Methods in Cognitive Linguistics 6 - Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Ohio, August 1 – 5, 2012
Applications are open for the 6th Empirical Methods in Cognitive Linguistics workshop, to be held at Case Western Reserve University, in Cleveland, Ohio August 1 – 5, 2012.

The goal of EMCL is to facilitate dialogue among language researchers with different methodological backgrounds, i.e. theorists, experimentalists, corpus linguists, etc. We do this by creating an environment where specialists learn from each other by developing a research project together where their various skills are combined.

Intended audience: Language researchers with an embodiment, situated cognition and/or cognitive linguistics background. No prior experimental or corpus training is required though an understanding of the theoretical issues is necessary. Participants can be at different early stages in their careers, i.e. graduate students, post-grads, post-docs, junior faculty, etc.

Workshop Format: During the course of a week, participants will join one of 5 hands-on mini-labs. Each mini-lab will be responsible for completing a joint research project. A select group of students (max. 8 per group for a total of 40) will be invited to participate. Each group will work with two researchers who will guide the group in selecting an idea for the group to investigate, structuring and organizing a research project, and carrying it out. The session will end with the presentation of findings and a general discussion.

Topics to be covered include
- Deciding on a research topic
- Transforming the research topic into a research question
- Developing experimental hypotheses and designing an experiment
- Data collection
- Statistical analysis and interpretation
- Presentation of findings to an audience
- post-Workshop write up of the research, as a brief article

As with previous editions of this conference, the aim of the programme is to reflect current activity in logic in our part of the world. So we hope that participants from Scandinavia, the Baltic countries and Northwestern Russia will take the opportunity to contribute a talk and to meet with fellow logicians from the area. But needless to say, we also extend a warm welcome to logicians from further afield and plan to present a varied and interesting collection of invited and contributed talks.

Call for proposals NWO: HERA Joint Research Programme Cultural Encounters - Internationale samenwerking in de Geesteswetenschappen. Deadline: 4 mei 2012
