LOT Summer School 2012, 2-13 July 2012.
Registration closed.

The next LOT Summer School 2012 will take place from 2-13 July 2012, and will be hosted by the Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS. The school will take place at conference center ‘De Baak’ in Driebergen (near Utrecht). Registration closes on June 1.

The school includes courses by Larry Horn (Yale), Andrew Nevins (UCL), Andrew Kehler (UCSD), Laurence Mettewie (Namen), Ted Sanders (Utrecht), Rolf Noyer (UPenn), Artemis Alexiadou (Stuttgart), and Ian Roberts (Cambridge).

This year’s edition includes two special teaching-tracks:
• A Language, Brain and Cognition session (LBC) sponsored by NCU. Teachers include Gina Kuperberg (Harvard), Naomi Feldman (Maryland), John Trueswell (Upenn), and Colin Phillips (Maryland). There is a special rate available for students who only wish to enroll for the LBC courses.
• A Bilingual SLI session sponsored by COST. Teachers are Patrick Rebuschat (Bangor), Sharon Armon Lotem (Bar-Ilan), Zofia Wodniecka (Krakow), Theo Marinis (Reading), and Vicky Chondrogianni (Bangor). Students who enroll for these courses can apply for COST student support.

Students are encouraged to present their work during the weekly poster session. Students may present a poster with original work, try-out their poster for an upcoming conference, or present a poster from a previous conference.

The courses in this school are free for all PhD-researchers and second year research master students who are affiliated with one of the eight LOT Institutes.

Taalbegrip bij autistisch kind met beperking


Kinderen met autisme hebben vaak problemen met communiceren. Als ze daarnaast een verstandelijke beperking hebben, zijn ze bijzonder kwetsbaar. Onderzoek door de Leidse orthopedagoge Jarymke Maljaars toont aan dat deze kinderen meer problemen hebben bij het begrijpen van taal dan bij het produceren ervan.

Positiever bij negatieve vraagstelling
Mensen reageren anders op positieve dan op negatieve formuleringen. Naomi Kamoen onderzocht in haar promotie-onderzoek waarom dat zo is. De resultaten hebben betekenis voor de vertaalslag van onderzoek in de media en de manier waarop enquźtemakers de opinie van mensen peilen.

With the advent of Web 2.0, we observe the rise of linguistic units that because of their structure, size and complexity have been widely unstudied so far. This relates to large complex networks of textual units and their collaborative generation by communities of interacting agents by means of computer-mediated communication. Amongst others, this includes wiki-based systems in scientific and knowledge communication. These examples have in common that they enable users to cooperate in generating and modifying nodes of text networks mostly without central control. In this talk, we investigate several examples of such linguistic networks. We start with so called social ontologies in order to shed light on emergent semantics and the kind of topology it brings about. Secondly, we ask for the self-similarity of linguistic networks as exemplified by Wikipedia's article network. Finally, we investigate laws of the collaboration of those agents who generate these networks in order to get insights into web-based collaboration as manifested by Wikipedia and numerous special purpose wikis.

NYI is a phenomenal way for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students to have an eye-opening travel experience, while continuing their focus on Linguistics and Cognitive Science. The school is a 3-week Institute, held in beautiful St. Petersburg, Russia, at which students choose 4 seminars in a range of fields, especially Linguistics and Cognitive Psychology. Faculty are from a wide range of US and European institutions, and this year's Linguistics and Psychology program features John F. Workshop Empirical Methods in Cognitive Linguistics 6 - Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Ohio, August 1-5 2012
Applications are open for the 6th Empirical Methods in Cognitive Linguistics workshop, to be held at Case Western Reserve University, in Cleveland, Ohio August 1 – 5, 2012.

The goal of EMCL is to facilitate dialogue among language researchers with different methodological backgrounds, i.e. theorists, experimentalists, corpus linguists, etc. We do this by creating an environment where specialists learn from each other by developing a research project together where their various skills are combined.

Intended audience: Language researchers with an embodiment, situated cognition and/or cognitive linguistics background. No prior experimental or corpus training is required though an understanding of the theoretical issues is necessary. Participants can be at different early stages in their careers, i.e. graduate students, post-grads, post-docs, junior faculty, etc.

Workshop Format: During the course of a week, participants will join one of 5 hands-on mini-labs. Each mini-lab will be responsible for completing a joint research project. A select group of students (max. 8 per group for a total of 40) will be invited to participate. Each group will work with two researchers who will guide the group in selecting an idea for the group to investigate, structuring and organizing a research project, and carrying it out. The session will end with the presentation of findings and a general discussion.

- Transforming the research topic into a research question
- Developing experimental hypotheses and designing an experiment
- Data collection
- Statistical analysis and interpretation

**Meeting Description**

For the past 24 years, the European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information (ESSLLI) has been organized every year by the Association for Logic, Language and Information (FoLLI) in different sites around Europe. The main focus of ESSLLI is on the interface between linguistics, logic and computation.

ESSLLI offers foundational, introductory and advanced courses, as well as workshops, covering a wide variety of topics within the three areas of interest: Language and Computation, Language and Logic, and Logic and Computation. Previous summer schools have been highly successful, attracting up to 500 students from Europe and elsewhere. The school has developed into an important meeting place and forum for discussion for students and researchers interested in the interdisciplinary study of Logic, Language and Information. During two weeks, 49 courses and 6 workshops are offered to the attendants, each of 1.5 hours per day during a five days week, with up to seven parallel sessions. ESSLLI also includes a student session (papers and posters by students only,
1.5 hour per day during the two weeks). There will be three evening lectures by Mel Fitting, Jonathan Ginzburg and Adam Przepiorkowski.

In 2012, ESSLLI will held in Opole, Poland and will be organized by the University of Opole, Poland. Chair of the program committee is Andreas Herzig, and chairs of the organizing committee are Urszula Wybraniec-Skardowska and Janusz Czelakowski.

Verbal and non-verbal interaction: From experiments to implementation

Humans, as well as animal or artificial agents or robots are continuously confronted with the problem of understanding each other. What are the mechanisms that shape communicative behaviour, what makes it so efficient in natural environments and what is the key for the improvement of it in artificial contexts? Dialogue coordination (alignment) in normal and noisy environments, intention understanding (pragmatic and joint attention), non-verbal cues (gestures and facial expression decoding), and asymmetric communication are some common challenges for interactive systems, and they require efficient verbal and non-verbal mechanisms. The CITEC Summer School 2012 will focus on such mechanisms from the perspectives of experimental psychology, cognitive sciences, computational modelling, neuroinformatics, gesture studies, animal communication, human-machine interaction and robotics.

To gain insights into these topics, the Graduate School in "Cognitive Interaction Technology" invites top PhD students to apply for the 2012 Summer School entitled "Verbal and non-verbal interaction: From experiments to implementation". It will take place from 27th to 31st of August 2012 at Bielefeld University (arrival 26th August, departure 1st September). The CITEC Summer School will consist of plenary lectures held by invited speakers, small-group workshops on practical, experimental and theoretical topics, as well as discussion groups, and an activity program.

Understanding, constructing or retelling coherent narratives contribute to progress in literacy skills and are in general good predictors of school success and disposition to literacy. It is therefore important to understand the processes underlying the development of narrative abilities as well as to reveal the conditions leading the child to further develop and/or to better utilize the competences implied in this activity. The goals of this international conference are threefold.
First, it aims to report on recent advances in narrative development, focusing particularly on the development of the capacity to express causal relations, be them physical or psychological, the internal states and the different points of view of the characters.
Secondly, and particularly important for this Conference, it aims to consider the conditions that stimulate and promote narrative skills, taking into account short term and long term intervention procedures as well as educational, developmental, linguistic and socio-cognitive variables.
Thirdly, it will focus on the interrelations between oral narrative skills and children’s advances in literacy in their early schooling.
These issues will be examined with an interdisciplinary approach by confronting the points of view of scholars of different disciplines like developmental psychology, linguistics and education.
The Conference will be organized around plenary presentations, poster sessions and will allow time for discussion. The Conference addresses specialists in narrative development and literacy, childhood professionals like teachers, educators, speech therapists or book publishers, as well as parents.

Auris organiseert op 9 november 2012 ‘TaalStaal’. Dit doet Auris samen met Pento en de NSDSK (Partners in Verstaan), de Universiteit Utrecht en Hogeschool Utrecht. Het congres geeft een actueel overzicht van de wetenschappelijke stand van zaken rond ernstige taal- en spraakproblemen (ESM) .

Hoofdlezingen van: prof. dr. Simon E. Fisher, directeur afdeling Taal en Genetica van het Max Planck instituut over ‘Erfelijke factoren bij Specific Language Impairment (SLI)’ en dr. Judy Clegg, University of Sheffield (UK) over ‘Follow up bij SLI-kinderen. Wat gebeurt er in adolescentie en daarna met deze groep cliėnten.

Voor medewerkers van de deelnemende organisaties is deelname gratis. Daarnaast mogen zij ook een gast uit hun professionele netwerk meenemen. Zij kunnen dus het bezoek aan dit congres ‘cadeau doen’.

Going Romance is the European conference series that focuses on Romance languages from the perspective of current linguistic theorizing. In the two decades of its existence, it has developed into the major European discussion forum for theoretically relevant research on Romance languages where current ideas about language in general and about Romance languages in particular are discussed. This year, for the first time, the conference will be held in Belgium, at the KU Leuven.

The conference includes two days of general sessions, for which papers on all aspects and disciplines of Romance linguistics are invited, and a workshop “Cleft sentences in Romance and Germanic”. For the workshop, we invite contributions on cleft sentences in Romance, possibly, but not necessarily, in comparison with cleft sentences in Germanic. We explicitly welcome contributions from all types of theoretical frameworks. Questions to be addressed in the workshop include, but are not limited to, the following:

Are there specific differences between cleft sentences in Romance and Germanic?
Which are the prosodic, semantic, information structural and syntactic properties of non-prototypical instances of clefts, such as presentational clefts?
To which extent do these non-prototypical instances of clefts challenge existing analyses of clefts, which are mostly based on it-clefts and their counterparts in other languages?
Are clefts best analyzed by integrating information structure in syntax (as in cartographic analyses) or by strictly separating information structure and syntax?

The Research Unit of Cognitive and Functional Linguistics at the Department of Linguistics of the University of Leuven is looking for applicants for three fully funded four-year PhD fellowship in linguistics (starting date: October/November 2012).

The three PhD fellowship are part of a larger collaborative project (GOA/12/007) "The Multiple Functional Load of grammatical signs in text construction and processes of language change", funded by the Research Council of the University of Leuven. The team supervising the project consists of Bert Cornillie, Kristin Davidse, Jean-Christophe Verstraete and An Van linden. The PhD projects deal with English Linguistics, Spanish Linguistics and Typology.

- The PhD project on English linguistics will focus on factive complements of verbal predicates in English. Its aims are to identify the specific properties that characterize factive complements in contrast with complements of reported speech, and to further elucidate the essence of the factive presupposition. The PhD project on Spanish linguistics is entitled ‘Discourse status and the development of object doubling in Spanish’ and its aim is to account for the origin and evolution of (indirect) object doubling in Spanish (e.g. Se (COI) lo (COD) dije a mi vecino (COI) ‘I told it to my neighbour’). A summary of the research project can be requested by e-mail. The supervisor of this PhD is Bert Cornillie, its co-supervisor is Freek Van de Velde.

The aim of the typological PhD project is to develop a typology of referring expressions and their role in discourse, based on a sample of Australian languages (or focusing on one language, if the candidate has field experience). This position is offered within the 10-year project ‘Empirical foundations of linguistics’ that started in 2011. The present postdoctoral project is part of the Strand 2 ‘Experimental grammar from a cross-linguistic perspective’ in the axis ‘The many-to-many nature of lexeme formation’.
The successful candidate will investigate the prosody-syntax interaction during recognition of French VN compounds using electroencephalography (EEG). The rationale of the present project is to better understand the role of prosodic pattern and word category information delivered by the first syllables of a word to anticipate its morphological structure. The use of event-related-brain potentials will allow us to trace with a high temporal resolution the electrical responses of the brain in natural and truncated prosody-syntax conditions. The experimental investigations will take place at the University Paris Descartes in the Vision, Action, Cognition Lab led by Prof. Karine Doré-Mazars (Neurocognition of Language group, Prof. Frederic Isel). The post-doc will work in a multidisciplinary (psychology, linguistics, neurophysiology) dynamic and supportive environment on a variety of projects involving behavioral, and EEG studies.
Individuals with a Ph.D in cognitive neuroscience or neurolinguistics with a formation in formal linguistics or a Ph.D in linguistics with solid formation in cognitive neuroscience or neurolinguistics are encouraged to apply. Previous experience with: 1) Experimental Cognitive Psychology ; 2) EEG; 3) familiarity with Matlab, EEGlab, SPM, etc ; and 4) a formation in phonetic-phonology or lexical morphology are considered strengths.

‘A Germanic Sandwich 2013’ will be held at the University of Leuven from 11-12 January 2013, as the fourth edition of a series of conferences in which Dutch is compared with its West Germanic neighbours, English and German. The first one took place in Berlin to commemorate the 1956 appearance of the seminal publication Nederlands tussen Duits en Engels ('Dutch between German and English'), a study by the renowned Dutch linguist C.B. van Haeringen. Later editions of the conference were held at Sheffield (2008) and Oldenburg (2010). The conferences have spawned a number of special issues, either as a book volume (Hüning et al. 2006) or as special issues of journals (Vismans et al. 2010; Ruigendijk et al. in prep.). We are accepting submissions for the following DGfS workshop, which will be held at the University of Potsdam on March 12-15, 2013, as part of the DGfS annual conference.


The investigation of early language acquisition and its development under specific conditions has proven to be a powerful tool to learn more about the system of different languages and their acquisition mechanisms. Several studies have addressed the question of how children acquire one or more languages under specific conditions, such as developmental disorders, sensory disabilities, or different ages of onset in L2-acquisition. This line of comparative research (cross-population and/or cross-linguistic) is able to uncover subtle aspects of the language acquisition process that only emerge under some specific conditions and it also helps in providing a finer-grained characterization of language disorders.

The papers in this workshop will focus on three topics: i) the comparison between different populations and different languages as a way to characterize the language acquisition process under specific conditions; ii) the distinction between “typical” and “atypical” language development and the discussion of different explanations for the latter (such as an impairment of the linguistic system or a performance deficit) and their potential interplay; and iii) the contribution of experimental data to inform the representation of grammar under specific conditions and vice versa.

The workshop gives an opportunity to address also methodological questions, e.g. the factors that need to be controlled when discussing different groups and the criteria of matching in order to draw meaningful comparisons (e.g. matching based on age, length of exposure, or linguistic abilities). Towards this end, the workshop aims to bring together recent studies that examine two or more groups acquiring one language under different specific conditions or cross-linguistic research on children acquiring different languages under the same specific condition, namely: children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI), children with hearing impairment, L2-learners with different ages of onset and children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The research will include the acquisition of different aspects of language, such as phonetics/phonology, inflectional morphology, and syntax.

The Linguistics Society of the Frisian Academy (Fryske Akademy) organizes its yearly meeting in December this year. Just like previous times, the fifth Conference on Frisian linguistics will have an informal character. It will be of interest to everybody who actively or passively participates in Frisian linguistics: grammar, phonetics/phonology, onomastics, lexicology, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics and so on. Talks may focus on the results of scientific research, but presentations of research plans, of speculations or of language corpora are also welcome. They may be held in any language belonging to the family of West-Germanic languages.

The 23rd Meeting of Computational Linguistics in the Netherlands (CLIN 23)


The 23rd Meeting of Computational Linguistics in the Netherlands (CLIN 23) will be hosted by the Human Media Interaction research group of the University of Twente, Enschede, the Netherlands on January 18th, 2013.

Keynote Speaker: Candy Sidner, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester (MA), USA

Abstract submission information
Researchers are invited to submit, in English, abstracts describing work on all aspects of computational linguistics and related language technologies and applications. In addition to the regular scientific tracks, CLIN 23 aims to have an industry track with scientific presentations on topics such as R&D challenges in industry, collaborations between industry and academia, and experiences with "real-world" applications.

Submissions should include
* Author(s) names, affiliation and contact details
* Presentation title
* An abstract of 250 words maximum, outlining the presentation
* Presentation type preference (oral presentation or poster)
* Submission for industry track (yes or no)

Presentation abstracts should be submitted electronically, no later than Wednesday, 14 November 2012. (Details on the submission website will be announced once they become available).

CLIN Journal
After the conference, authors of accepted abstracts will have the opportunity to submit a full version of their paper to the CLIN journal (see www.clinjournal.org)

STIL thesis prize
At the CLIN meeting we will also announce the winner of the CLIN 23 STIL (Stichting Toepassing Inductieve Leertechnieken) Thesis Prize. MA theses submitted to and evaluated at a university or organization of higher education in the Netherlands or Flanders are eligible for the prize. The thesis should address a topic in computational linguistics or its applications, and may be written in Dutch or English. The Conference
Death is a defining factor in the explorations of our subjectivity, art, history,
politics, and many other aspects of our social interactions and perceptions of the
world. In the modern age, conceptions of death have continued to shift and
evolve, yet our perceptions are still fueled by an instinctive fear of the end of life.

In recent decades, we have rebelled against the threat of death by inventing new technologies and medicines that have drastically increased our life expectancy—diseases and disabilities are gradually disappearing. Some believe that one day we will completely conquer the aging process, and ultimately death. Life can now be seen as a new form of commodity, a material object that we can trade, sell, or buy.

Despite our attempts to shut-out death or overcome its inevitability, the end of life
has remained a visible and unavoidable aspect of our society. From antiquity to the present day, perceptions of death have been represented through various
different mediums: visual culture, art, literature, music, historical writing, cinema,
religious symbols, national anniversaries, and public expressions of mourning.

This conference aims to explore how death has been represented and
conceptualized, from classical antiquity to the modern age, and the extent to
which our perceptions and understandings of death have changed (or remained
the same) over time. The wide scope of this theme reflects the historical range of LUCAS’s (previously called LUICD) three research programs (Classics and Classical Civilization, Medieval and Early Modern Studies and Modern and Contemporary Studies), as well as the intercontinental and interdisciplinary focus of many of the institute’s research projects.

The LUCAS Graduate Conference welcomes papers from all disciplines within the humanities. The topic of your proposal may address the concept of death from a cultural, historical, classical, artistic, literary, cinematic, political, economic, or social viewpoint.

Questions that might be raised include: How have different cultures imagined the end of life? What is the role of art (literature, or cinema) in cultural conceptions of death? How might historical or contemporary conceptualizations of death be related to the construction of our subjectivity and cultural identity? What is the cultural meaning(s) of death? To what extent has modern warfare changed our perceptions of death? How is death presented in the media and how has this changed? In what ways has religion influenced our reflections on death and the afterlife?

Please send your proposal (max. 300 words) to present a 20-minute paper to lucasconference2013(removeme)gmail.com. The deadline for proposals is 15 November, 2012. You will be notified whether or not your paper has been selected by 1 December, 2012.

As with the previous LUCAS Graduate Conference (2011), a selection of papers will be published in the conference proceedings. For those who attend the conference, there will be a registration fee of €45 to
cover the cost of lunches, coffee breaks, and other conference materials.
Unfortunately we cannot offer financial support at this time.

Paper and poster proposals on any topic in generative second language acquisition (adult and child), L1 Attrition, L3/Ln acquisition, and childhood bilingualism are invited. Abstracts are invited for 20 minute presentations (with 10 minutes for discussion) and/or posters.

Please indicate on your abstract whether you wish your submission to be considered for one category only (regular paper, or poster, please specify) or for both categories. Abstracts should not exceed 500 words: the text is limited to 500 words, not including the title. Figures, tables, examples, and references may be included on a second page. These do not count toward the 500 words.

Call for papers for ICLaVE7 meeting, Trondheim, June 26-28 2013. Deadline: December 1 2012
ICLaVE7 invites submissions for papers and posters on all scientific approaches to analysing and interpreting language variation and change in Europe.

Papers will be 20 minutes each, with a 10-minute question-and-answer period. Abstracts should not exceed 500 words, excluding title and references. Paper abstracts will be subjected to blind review, so author names should not appear anywhere on abstracts.

CLARIN-NL Call 4: Informatiebijeenkomst 30 augustus. Deadline Open Call: 26 september 2012
CLARIN-NL Call 4 is geopend. Call 4 bevat een Open Call en een Gesloten Call.

Open Call
De CLARIN-NL Open Call 4 is open vanaf maandag 2 juli 2012. De deadline voor indiening is woensdag 26 september 2012, 13:00 uur CET. Het totale budget voor deze oproep is 600k euro. Het maximale budget voor een project is 120k euro. Alle voorstellen worden geėvalueerd en gerangschikt door het International Advisory Panel (IAP) en National Advisory Panel (NAP). Midden december 2012 zal het bestuur beslissen over de honorering van de ingediende projectvoorstellen. Gehonoreerde projecten kunnen begin 2013 van start gaan. Gesloten Call
Naast de Open Call organiseert CLARIN-NL in 2012 ook een Gesloten Call. De Gesloten Call is er om ervoor te zorgen dat alle disciplines binnen de geesteswetenschappen aan bod komen in CLARIN-NL. De Gesloten Call staat alleen open voor onderzoekers die hier expliciet voor zijn uitgenodigd door het CLARIN-NL bestuur. Details over de Gesloten Call vindt u hier.

Op donderdag 30 augustus (± 13:00-18:00) organiseert CLARIN-NL een informatiebijeenkomst in verband met Call 4. Het uitvoerend bestuur zal praktische informatie geven over de oproep en lopende en afgeronde projecten zullen hun ervaringen presenteren. Verdere details volgen binnenkort op onze website.

Algemene informatie over CLARIN-NL
Het CLARIN-NL project heeft als doel om een onderzoeksinfrastructuur te creėren voor geesteswetenschappers die werken met talige data en tools. Het project is gestart in april 2009 en loopt tot april 2015. CLARIN-NL is de nationale tegenhanger van de CLARIN ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium).

Een infrastructuur voor talige data en tools moet ten eerste faciliteiten bieden voor het opslaan van data en tools. Ook moeten er faciliteiten zijn die de data en tools zichtbaar en toegankelijk maken voor onderzoekers. Verder moeten tools toegepast kunnen worden op data. CLARIN-NL probeert deze faciliteiten te implementeren bij de CLARIN Centres (zie CLARIN Centres pagina). Ten tweede moet de infrastructuur gevuld worden met data en tools en hun metadata, die moeten voldoen aan CLARIN-standaarden. Dit is het punt waarop onze calls in beeld komen. CLARIN-NL heeft de afgelopen jaren al drie calls georganiseerd voor curatie- en demonstratorprojecten om de CLARIN-infrastructuur te vullen (bekijk deze pagina om een indruk te krijgen van de typen projecten die binnen CLARIN-NL worden uitgevoerd). Deze projecten nemen bestaande data en tools als basis en proberen ze CLARIN-compatibel te maken door er CLARIN-standaarden en best practices op toe te passen. Ook de vierde call is bedoeld voor voorstellen uit de geesteswetenschappen die plannen presenteren om data te cureren, een demonstrator te maken, of een combinatie van beide.

Survey, part of the researchproject AXES
We are sending you this survey with the intent to get an overall picture of how researchers in the humanities and social sciences use digitized online archives, in particular audio-visual archives.

This survey is part of the researchproject AXES (see www.axes-project.eu). Together with ICT- and humanities researchers from other European countries we are trying to implement innovative search technology in audio-visual archives, by combining text-, image- and speech-retrieval. This will only yield positive results for the academic community when it incorporates the methodological approaches and requirements of scholars from different disciplines. By filling in the survey you can thus contribute to the quality of our research results.

Even if your impression is that the survey hardly applies to your situation, we do appreciate your response, as it will give us a view of the role of digital archives in academic research.

It will take about 15 minutes average to fill in this survey.
