Title: Cross-language interactions during bilingual sentence processing

Abstract:

Bilingual speakers are more representative language users than monolinguals. The consequence has been a dramatic increase in research on language processing in bilinguals and second language learners. In part, this recent research has focused on the interactions that exist between a bilingual’s two lexicons, with findings indicating a great deal of permeability across a bilingual’s two languages. Other work has focused on whether this permeability extends to the level of syntactic processing. In this talk, I review new research examining the interactions of the bilingual’s two languages when bilinguals are making structural decisions about the words they read or hear. I will discuss the voluminous research examining this question from the perspective of the role of the first language on the syntactic processing of the second language, and also examine cross-language interactions in the opposite direction (from the second language to the first language) in bilinguals who actively use their two languages in their daily lives and who value maintenance of the first language. I will also discuss work on processing mixed language and its implications for models of language processing, for our understanding of how bilinguals manage to negotiate their two languages, and for existing assumptions about the plasticity of cognitive and neural representations. Throughout, I will argue that research on bilingual sentence processing has the potential to lead to significant changes in the conceptualization of the mind with two languages and in current views about the permeability of the first language system.

Prof. Brandon Weekes presents "Bilingual brains - what's new?" at this ACLC Seminar. Prof. Weekes is Chair in Communication Science at the University of Hong Kong and Director of the Communication Science Laboratory at HKU. (location BH K02).

Abstract
More than half the world is bilingual - speaking at least two and sometimes more languages with some proficiency. Cognitive neuroscientists have discovered that bilingual speakers use very specific parts of the brain to communicate. However this depends on the age of acquisition, proficiency and linguistic similarity between languages. Recent research suggests that bilingualism has protective benefits for the brain. Studies show that bilingual speakers perform better on decision making tasks and are less likely to develop dementia compared to monolingual speakers. One reason for this cognitive reserve is greater grey matter density in specific brain regions which delays the onset of cognitive decline. The conclusion from this research is that bilingualism is a protective factor that delays the clinical onset of cognitive decline. Bilingualism can therefore reduce the social costs for the long term healthcare of patients with dementia and also promote healthy ageing in multilingual environments. I will present new data on bilingual speaking children, young adults and seniors in Hong Kong.

Brendan Weekes is Associate Dean and Chair Professor in Communication Science at the University of Hong Kong. He is an experimental psychologist by training and registered clinical psychologist in Australia. Prof. Weekes is the Director of the Laboratory for Communication Science in the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of Hong Kong.

Abstract
Since 1994 SA has been in a constant period of change. This affects so many aspects of the daily lives of the people living in SA. It also has an impact on the languages we use to function in everyday contexts wherever we are. I want to talk about the language context in SA and in this process I will refer to the various Acts regarding language and the development of languages in the country. Is it possible to have eleven official languages in a country? How do we deal with it?
I will also refer to Afrikaans as a case study: what has happened (or has not happened) to this language in the period since 1994. How did the speakers of Afrikaans go about it to rectify some of the mistakes made in the past? Can we really say there is a future for Afrikaans in SA?

Subjectivity seems to matter (again)

The two seemingly similar Dutch raising verbs schijnen and lijken have been shown to differ in distribution (Haegeman, 2006). Whereas lijken can be embedded under modals, negation, and questions for instance, schijnen cannot. In this talk, I will show that the differences in distributional properties follow from restrictions on scope as a result of the semantics of the verbs. The proposal is that schijnen is subjective, but lijken is not. That is, evaluation of schijnen (but not of lijken) is restricted to the here and now of the speaker. As such, it is not part of the at-issue content of the utterance. Schijnen can therefore not be embedded under elements that force an evaluation such as modals, negation, and questions (i.e. it cannot occur in nonveridical contexts (cf. Ernst, 2009)). Therefore, it is much more restricted in its distribution than lijken. As a next step we will investigate whether the difference in subjectivity leads to a difference in processing of these two verbs. The hypothesis is that subjectivity will slow down processing because it is an extra computation that needs to be carried out (in analogy to findings in the domain of causal connectives (Canestrelli, 2013 a.o.)). This was investigated in a self-paced-reading experiment. The results indicate that, indeed, subjective schijnen is harder to process than non-subjective lijken. Interestingly, subjectivity leads to an immediate processing cost, but confers a processing advantage later in the sentence. Finally, we will look at data from acquisition experiments that I carried out in cooperation with Hannah De Mulder to find out whether subjective schijnen is also acquired later than lijken The combined results will show that subjectivity not only influences grammar, but also processing, and acquisition of evidential raising verbs.

Title: *How early vocal development provides perspective on the evolution of language: Functional flexibility in vocal communication as a foundational principle*

Abstract:
Vocalizations of human infants during their first months reveal capabilities critical for language but absent, as far as is known, in any other primate at any age. Our research shows that by three months, human infant sounds may reveal deep roots for human language, hinting at a very distant break from our ape relatives (Oller et al., 2013). Primate signals often have an inherent emotional valence. For example a threat call is inherently negative and cannot occur in positive expressions, as would be seen in greeting or alliance formation. This is one reason animal calls have been termed “fixed signals (Lorenz, 1951; Tinbergen, 1951)” – because individual calls have not been seen to change from negative to neutral to positive on different occasions. The presentation will indicate that precisely this kind of shift from negative, to neutral, to positive does occur, however, in human infant squealing, cooing and growling, the earliest precursors to speech. To exemplify, an infant squeal can be expressed with a smile on one occasion, and shortly thereafter, the same squeal can be used to express distress, accompanied by frowning, at not later than three months of age. The same sort of shift can occur with infant growls or coos, and all these sounds can be expressed with comfortable neutral faces as well. Language requires such freedom of expression all the time, and from this we conclude that human infant vocalization provides a window into the foundations that were required for language to originate in our species.

Abstract:


One of the remarkable differences between signed and spoken languages is the presence of two symmetrical articulators in sign languages: the two hands. All sign languages that have been studied make intensive use of both hands, both in the phonology of lexical signs and in the morphosyntax. In the lexicon, roughly half of the signs are one-handed. In two recent research projects, we have investigated 1) what the other hand does during the articulation of a one-handed sign, and 2) how the two hands are used in tandem to express complex constructions. This talk will focus on situations where there is a change in dominant hand from right to left or vice versa. These dominance reversals can be very brief, lasting only a single sign, or can persist for many sentences. On the basis of systematic transcription of the Corpus NGT containing over 70 hours of sign language dialogues, dominance reversals have been found to be used by all signers in the corpus and to be quite frequent. One of the functions of a brief reversal of dominant hand will be discussed in some more detail, referring to cases where the other hand is active in managing the interaction between signer and perceiver. Their linguistic vs. gestural nature will be discussed, and compared to interactive functions of gestures of hearing speakers.

Abstract
The talk traces the current understanding of mood (or mode) and modality back in time, in the Western tradition, giving pride of place to F.R. Palmer, G.H. von Wright, I. Kant, Priscian, Quintilian, Dionysius Thrax, Apollonius Dyscolus, and Protagoras. It sketches how there were and still are at least four different notions of mood, the domain of which was progressively taken over by a notion of modality. It shows that the confusion that characterizes current thinking is not exceptional and that one can learn from the earlier confusions.

“The Secret Language of the Kallawaya Healers”

Kallawaya is a mixed and secret language that is used by traditional herbalists during healing ceremonies. As a mixed language it shows what Matras (2009: 290) calls a “lexicon-grammar split”, i.e. the lexicon and grammar of Kallawaya come from two different and genetically unrelated languages. While the grammar derives mostly from southern Quechua, the main lexifier language of Kallawaya is Pukina (see Stark 1972: 200, 206, 224). Pukina became extinct latest in the 19th century (see Adelaar and van de Kerke 2009: 125) and is as good as undocumented: the only surviving material is a collection of Christian texts and prayers from the early 17th century (Oré 1607), which comprises about 260 words (see Cerrón-Palomino 2012: 273). Apart from Pukina, Quechua and Aymara are also lexifier languages of Kallawaya, although they contribute to the Kallawaya lexicon only to a minor degree (for an overview of Kallawaya, see also Muysken 2009).
The secret nature of Kallawaya is evidenced by lexical manipulations, which are conscious distortions of Quechua and Aymara words. These lexical manipulations are intended to keep the meaning of what is said unintelligible to outsiders, but also to flag an in-group identity (see Mous 2003: 209, Matras 2009: 291f).
I will first provide an overview of the etymological composition of the Kallawaya lexicon, before proceeding to a discussion of the lexical manipulations, suggesting a classification of the most common types of manipulations in Kallawaya. I will furthermore argue that lexical similarities between Kallawaya and piedemonte languages, such as Leko, Mosetén, and Takana arise from a former contact situation, in which Pukina was the providing language for the piedemonte languages.
In addition, I will also present some grammatical features in which Kallawaya differs significantly from its grammar-providing language Quechua, arguing that Kallawaya is not a complete copy of the Quechua grammar (see also Muysken 1997: 429). Among the most notable deviations from Quechua we find
o affixes of non-Quechua and non-Aymara origin;
o an inverse-like exchange of the second and third person markers in the verbal and nominal inflection system;
o the omission of the otherwise obligatory direct object marker.
The presentation provides an overview of the Kallawaya lexicon and grammar. I will discuss in particular the subject of lexical manipulations as well as that of a possible language contact between Pukina and piedemonte languages, which has led to some lexical similarities between Kallawaya and the piedemonte languages.

Referential Gaze And Word-Learning In Autistic Adults

Abstract
Humans mostly rely on social references (e.g. gaze direction of the speaker) when learning new words (Bloom, 2000). This is particularly important when there is more than one possible referents in the surrounding. By the age of 14 months, infants can already use an adult’s direction of gaze to distinguish the referent of a novel word, even when other unknown objects are present (Paulus & Fikkert, in press). Children with autism tend to fail this task, even at 9 years of age (Akechi, et al., 2010). However, when the saliency of the referent is increased (e.g. by wiggling), the percentage of autistic children who choose the correct referent increases signi?cantly. On the other hand, if the saliency of a distractor is increased, typically developing infants manage to ignore it and rely on the social cue to choose the correct referent starting at 24 months of age (Moore, et al., 1999).

In the current study, healthy (N=17) and autistic (N=13) adults are tested with a wordlearning paradigm, employing eye-tracking methodology. An animated cartoon actor is presented with two novel objects, then she looks at one of them and gives it a novel name. In one condition, both objects are static in the labeling scene. In the other condition, the opposite object starts wiggling to increase its saliency, to create a con?ict between social and saliency cues. Afterwards, a selection screen with the two novel objects and two additional distractors appears, and participants are instructed to look at the object that was named. Longer looking time to the correct object in the selection screen would indicate a correct name-object association, which requires a correct processing of the direction of gaze. Preliminary results show that both healthy and autistic adults choose the correct referent most of the time, even when the distractor’s saliency is increased. This suggests that the ability to learn new words by referring to the direction of gaze develops in autistic people, but it is much delayed, compared to their typically developing peers.

Workshop DISCOURSE EXPECTATIONS: THEORETICAL, EXPERIMENTAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PERSPECTIVES ,University of Tübingen (Germany), June 20-21, 2013
Studies on discourse processing suggest that natural language interpretation is expectation-driven. World knowledge and discourse context are used immediately to anticipate how discourse is likely to continue. Although there is ample evidence demonstrating such forward-looking processes both within single sentences and in larger discourse, we still lack a unified account of its foundation; i.e. the extent to which linguistic and extralinguistic factors influence expectations and whether these are driven by linguistic or language-external factors. The workshop contributes to the understanding of discourse expectations by bringing together linguists, psycholinguists, cognitive scientists and computational linguists working on discourse processing.

We encourage submissions of theoretical, experimental and computational studies on the following aspects, and topics related to these:

- What is the nature of expectations in discourse? Do they pertain only to discourse or anaphoric relations? How specific are expectations? Are they abstract objects or particulars?
- How do expectations emerge? Are they triggered locally, e.g. by lexical items, or are they determined globally by more general properties of discourse, such as the discourse topic/Question under Discussion (QuD)? How do local and global expectations interact?

The phenomenon of implicit causality may serve as a particularly illustrative example: In psycholinguistic and linguistic research, it has been shown that certain transitive verbs with two animate arguments trigger expectations of explanations of a particular type. Thus, while the experiencer-object verb "fascinate" triggers explanations about the subject ("John fascinates Mary because HE..."), the experiencer-subject verb "admire" triggers explanations about the object ("John admires Mary because SHE..."). This phenomenon has been exploited in psycholinguistic experiments to investigate the time course of semantic and/or pragmatic interpretation, often with clear demonstrations of the emergence of early effects in discourse comprehension that appear shortly after the verb has been processed. However, further theoretically oriented investigations may benefit our understanding of the nature of these effects as well as their modeling.

Gouden Eeuwsymposium: Tussen Lexicologie en Taalkunde
Dr. Marijke Mooijaart neemt na 27 jaar afscheid van het INL. Na de afronding van haar proefschrift Atlas van de Vroegmiddelnederlandse Taalvarianten werkte ze als historisch taalkundige en lexicograaf bij het Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal (WNT) en het Oudnederlands Woordenboek (ONW).

Tot eind juni werkt dr. Mooijaart aan het diachrone computationele lexicon GiGaNT en de taalkundige verrijking van het project Brieven als Buit.

What are the properties setting the human language faculty apart from other cognitive capacities? Linguistic research of the past few decades have clarified many aspects of this issue, although many questions still remain to be answered.

In this workshop, several aspects of the question will be discussed by a number of scholars who have one thing in common: they have worked together with Riny Huybregts, a linguist who has spent an active career in interpreting, explaining and expanding in particular Noam Chomsky's views on these issues. After having worked in the Dutch universities in Utrecht, Tilburg and Leiden, Riny retired recently. This workshop is the way in which his former colleagues want to mark the occasion of his retirement.

French Phonology Network Meeting 2013 (RFP 2013), Nantes, July 1-3 2013
After the conferences organized in Orléans 2010, Tours 2011 and Paris 2012, the French Phonology Network (Réseau Franēais de Phonologie) is launching a new meeting in the same spirit that will take place in Nantes from July, 1st to 3rd, 2013 thanks to the LLing (EA3827, Université de Nantes), FoReLL (Université de Poitiers) and MSH-Ange Guépin.

Main session

Phonologists of every school or background are warmly welcome to participate. Issues at stake may be in the field of general phonology or of the phonological analysis of a linguistic phenomenon of a specific language.

Thematic sessions

This year we’d like to draw your attention to the fact that thematic sessions will be organized around 'Acquisition' and 'Harmony'.

Thematic session 1 : Acquisition
This thematic session aims at addressing the latest issues in the field of phonological acquisition of a first or second language. It will bring forward data which are unattested in adult’s languages and challenge phonological theories.
Thematic session 2 : Harmony
Harmony is a wide-spread process among the world’s languages. It may be defined as a syntagmatic change whereby a given segment absorbs some of the properties of another segment in the same phonological domain. When it is perceived as some kind of long-distance assimilation, harmony -which may be local (strict contiguity) or extended to a given domain (syllable, foot, word, phonological phrase)- may target vowels (vowel harmony) or consonants (consonant harmony). If locality seems to play a crucial role in its definition, harmony is also sensitive to directionality. Intervening segments (within the domain within which harmony applies) may prevent harmony to take place or be transparent: are these really invisible or are they somehow involved in the harmony process? Are harmony processes due to phonetic (e.g. phonologization of a coarticulation process) or to strictly phonological principles (e.g. computation of a restricted set of principles)?
This thematic session aims at bringing together people who are concerned with harmony in general phonology as well as with harmonic relations in speech perception and production, prosody, acquisition, development, the structuring of the lexicon, automatic speech recognition and speech synthesis (this list, of course, should not be interpreted as being exhaustive).

Conference: Patterns of Macro- and Micro-Diversity in the Languages of Europe and the Middle East. Computational Issues in Studying Language Diversity: Storage, Analysis and Inference, Thu.-Sat., July 18-20, 2013, Groningen.

This is the second of three conferences organized by Pieter Muysken, Maarten Mous and John Nerbonne. The overall theme of the series is language diversity, including at least typology, diachronic linguistics, dialectology, areal linguistics, language contact, colonial varieties, pidgins and creoles. A particular focus of this second conference are computational issues in studying language diversity, including storage, analysis and inference, but please note (as will be clear in the list of speakers) that we do not imagine that theoretical issues have crystallized sufficiently to allow the computational issues to be addressed in purely technical terms. We are convinced that we still need good theoretical ideas about how to detect relations among varieties and how to interpret the signals of relatedness we have.

We cordially invite you to submit a paper to the upcoming 9th International Conference on Natural Computation (ICNC 2013) and the 10th International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Knowledge Discovery (FSKD 2013), to be jointly held from 23-25 July 2013 in Shenyang, China.

Shenyang, the largest city in Northeast China, has a celebrated history dating back to the Warring States of 476 BC. It is the birthplace of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and has many cultural relics which symbolize the prosperity and subsequent decline of the last feudal dynasty in China. Shenyang has one of China's the two best preserved imperial palace complexes, along with the famous Zhaoling Tomb and Fuling Tomb. Shenyang is also renowned for its mild summer and mouth-watering local food.

As with the past ICNC-FSKD conferences, all papers in conference proceedings will be submitted to both EI Compendex and ISTP (ISI Proceedings), as well as IEEE Xplore. We invite advanced students (Ph.D. or M.A. level) in linguistics and related fields to attend this 3-week Summer School in August 2013.
It is co-organized by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sprachwissenschaft (DGfS), the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, and the Excellence Cluster 264 - TOPOI.
The event contains courses in different areas of linguistics, genetics, anthropology and archeology, which look at language from the point of view of language evolution, language change, and language acquisition. The courses will be taught by distinguished researchers from Germany, Europe and the USA.
The Summer School is of course also open to more advanced researchers who are interested in learning about language development. The language of instruction is English and German.

AIMS:

SLSP is the first event in a series to host and promote research on the wide spectrum of statistical methods that are currently in use in computational language or speech processing. It aims at attracting contributions from both fields. Though there exist large, well-known conferences including papers in any of these fields, SLSP is a more focused meeting where synergies between areas and people will hopefully happen. SLSP will reserve significant space for young scholars at the beginning of their careers.

VENUE:

SLSP 2013 will take place in Tarragona, 100 km. to the south of Barcelona.

7th HiSoN Summer School in Historical Sociolinguistics, Metochi, Kalloni, Lesbos, Greece, August 3-10 2013
This is the seventh summer school organised by the Historical Sociolinguistics Network (HiSoN) and it will offer seven courses by leading experts on modern and historical sociolinguistics, aimed at postgraduate students and young researchers. ICCL Summer School 2013: 'Semantic Web - Ontology Languages and Their Use', Technische Universität Dresden, August 18 - 31, 2013. Registration before April 11!
As in the past summer schools at the Technische Universität Dresden, people from distinct, but communicating communities will gather in an informal and friendly atmosphere. This two-week event is aimed at graduate students, researchers and practitioners.

The topic of this year's summer school is

Semantic Web - Ontology Languages and Their Use

The summer school is devoted to the Semantic Web, a very dynamic and current area of research and application which aims at making information on the World Wide Web fit for intelligent systems applications. One of the key ideas of the Semantic Web approach is to make use of methods from knowledge representation and of AI research in general in order to obtain seamless integration of information from diverse resources, interoperability of tools, enhance search functionalities, and the like.

Central for this development is the design of knowledge representation languages for building so-called ontologies, which serve as a kind of metadata to describe the semantics or meaning of data on the Web. Of primary importance are ontology languages and related recommended standards by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), as well as methods and algorithm for their processing.

The Semantic Web is now an advanced interdisciplinary field having its home in Computer Science. Third party funding for more than a decade, in particular from the European Union, has led to significant progress. Systems like Apple's Siri or IBM's Watson, adaptions of Semantic-Web-based technologies for e.g. schema.org, Facebook's Open Graph or Google's Knowledge Graph bring these technologies to widespread use and application. Through so-called Linked Data, high volumes of Semantic-Web-processable data is already available on the Web.

The ICCL Summer School 2013 will introduce to Semantic Web Ontology Languages and some of their application areas, and highlight related research problems.


Registration:

If you want to attend the summer school, we would like you to register via the Online Registration Form preferably by April 11, 2013. This deadline is obligatory for all who want to apply for a grant.

After April 11, 2013, registration will be possible as long as there are vacant places. (Since we intend to restrict participation to about
60 people, in case of excessive demand, we will have to close the registration to the summer school.)

Please register at the latest by July 1, 2013, because - apart from the mentioned overall restriction of participation - we would need an early estimate of the number of participants.

People applying until April 11, 2013, and applying for a grant will be informed about respective decisions on grants by end of April 2013.

After April 11, 2013 applications for grants cannot be considered any more.

An on-site check-in is on Sunday, August 18, 2013, at 4 - 7 pm in room E001 of the Computer Science building. It continues on Monday, August 19, 2013, 8 - 10 am.

One of the hardest problems in experimental semantics and pragmatics is the way meanings of complex expressions are derived from simple lexical concepts and connected to concept representations. While concepts corresponding to simple words can be represented as feature lists or prototypes (Rosch & Mervis 1975, Hampton 2006), the ways in which such representations may be derived for composite expressions is highly puzzling, both in terms of experimental measures and in terms of formal analysis (Kamp & Partee 1995, Hampton & Jönsson 2012). Since the introduction of this problem by Osherson & Smith (1981), much experimental and theoretical work has been done by cognitive psychologists on the derivation of concept representations. However, in many ways this work has been carried out independently of related on-going work on meaning and use of logical operators (Crain/Khlentzos 2008) and compositionality (Bemis & Pylkkänen 2011). As a result, the interactions between concept combination, meaning and use of logical concepts, and compositionality principles have remained by and large underexplored.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together theoretical linguists, psycholinguists and cognitive psychologists in search of a common ground for on-going work on compositionality and concepts. Relevant questions are:
* Is there evidence for a general procedure mapping lexical concepts into concepts corresponding to complex expressions?
* Are there inherent and experimentally-supported distinctions between logical concepts (e.g. quantifiers, conjunctions and disjunction) and concepts corresponding to content words?
* How is the composition of concepts sensitive to contextual factors? Are there experimentally-supported generalizations to make in this domain?
* Are there significant distinctions in concept composition between different conceptual domains (space, time, quantification, boolean operators, colors, etc.)?
* What are the interactions between concept composition and phenomena involving vagueness, implicatures, or scalar expressions?

The workshop will be held in conjunction with XPRAG-2013, which is under the auspices of the ESF research network EuroXprag. The workshop is part of the VICI project “Between Logic and Common Sense” supported by NWO, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research.

Aim of the workshop:
The study of first language acquisition is crucial in furthering our understanding of the cognitive prerequisites and processes involved in language, a defining capacity of human cognition. Currently, early language acquisition is successfully studied from two main perspectives: one approach tests theoretical assumptions by studying infants' responses with behavioural and neurocognitive methods; the other implements theories by means of computational models. This workshop aims to bring these two approaches closer together, a much needed advance in the field and one that promises to deepen our understanding of the issues that play a role during language acquisition.

The workshop consists of five days of plenary talks and group discussions, where each day in centered around a fundamental issue in the study of early language acquisition. Participants are strongly encouraged to attend all five days of the workshop.

Conference Identity in Ellipsis, LUCL, Leiden University, September 20-21 2013

Identity in ellipsis is a long-standing issue in linguistics. Virtually all accounts of ellipsis phenomena assume that the elided material must be identical in some way or other to material in a suitable antecedent available in the discourse. The nature of the identity condition and its precise formulation is under heated debate in current research. The main question is whether identity holds at some syntactic level of representation, or some semantic one, or both.
The syntactic account of identity (Sag 1976, Williams 1977, Fiengo & May 1994, Chung et al. 1995, Baltin 2012, Johnson 2012, Chung 2013) holds that ellipsis is recovered under a form of structural identity with the antecedent, defined over phrase markers of some sort, in most but not all cases, identical LF representations. Clearly, surface identity is not required, as shown by possible inflectional differences on verbs (see Warner 1985 for exceptions, and Lasnik 1995 for an account), cf. (1).

(1) a. They eat nattoo and John eats nattoo, too.
b. John has eaten nattoo and Bill may eat nattoo, too.

Semantic accounts, on the other hand, operate with an identity relation stated purely over semantic representations (Dalrymple et al 1991, Sag & Hankamer 1984, Hardt 1993, Ginzburg and Sag 2000, Merchant 2001, Anderbois 2011). Support for the semantic approach comes from various phenomena. One is 'vehicle change' (Fiengo and May 1994), others are syntactic mismatches of the kind in (2) (Merchant 2005):

Semantic accounts are also supported by the availability of non-isomorphic antecedents in clausal ellipsis like sluicing (Postdam 2007, Vicente 2008, van Craenenbroeck 2010).
Syntactic identity is heavily supported by the lack of argument structure alterations (Chung 2006) and the lack of active-passive mismatches in clausal ellipsis (Merchant 2008), such as (3), since active and passive sentences differ from each other only in their syntax but not in their semantics.

(3) * Joe was murdered, but we don’t know who murdered Joe.

In addition to purely syntactic and semantic approaches, there also exist 'hybrid' approaches, according to which both semantic and syntactic identity can guide the recovery of the elided material. In the most prominent type of hybrid approach (Kehler 2002), it is the discourse relation between the elliptical clause and its antecedent that determines the choice between syntactic and semantic identity and impacts the elidability of constituents.
Psycholinguistic research on ellipsis has also begun to address the issue of ellipsis identity, in order to understand what guides the parser in the recovery of the antecedent. It has been found that various forms of antecedent-ellipsis mismatches receive a systematic cline of acceptability (Kim et al 2011), which might suggest that identity is syntactic but non-identical ellipsis can be 'repaired' and become acceptable if the repair is not too difficult (Arregui et al 2006).

We invite abstracts that bear on the identity condition on ellipsis from theoretical and experimental angles, addressing the issue of identity in any language. In particular, questions that the conference seeks to address include – but are not limited to – the following:

• Does ellipsis need syntactic or semantic identity, or both?
• What is the role of discourse in determining which kind of identity is required?
• Are there differences in identity across small and large ellipses (clausal vs. predicate ellipsis)?
• Are there cross-linguistic differences in the kind of identity ellipsis requires?
• Under which conditions can ellipsis sites be non-isomorphic to their antecedent?
• What is the role of extralinguistic material in the recoverability condition in ellipsis?
• Which psycholinguistic methodology can be used to address the identity issue?
• How can we integrate experimental and theoretical approaches into one coherent model?

Leiden University Center for Linguistics is pleased to announce a two-day workshop on Intentional Language Change. The workshop explores intentional language change, that is all language change (or non-change) which is triggered or carried out deliberately and with clearly identifiable social motivations. Some would claim that all language change is to some extent intentional. Yet, there are many different degrees and types of intentional change. For instance, some speech communities consciously decide to change an entire lexicon, with the purpose of setting themselves apart from neighbouring communities. In other cases, linguistic taboo (the prohibition to utter certain words) can cause extreme changes in the lexicon. Combining theory and case studies, we hope to provide a coherent overview of, and shed light on, intentional change.

The aim of the masterclass is to provide a general introduction into the topic as well as an overview of the state of the art. We very much encourage students from all masters and research masters in linguistics in The Netherlands to participate. De Nederlandse Taalunie (NTU) en Het Werkverband Amsterdamse Psycholinguļsten (het WAP) organiseren in het kader van het zesde lustrum van het WAP, het symposium E-Health voor mensen met communicatieve beperkingen: wetenschap en praktijk

Ontwikkelingen in de taal- en spraaktechnologie (technologie die specifiek gericht is op het verwerken van taal en spraak) dragen bij aan geavanceerdere E-Health-toepassingen voor de behandeling en ondersteuning van mensen met een communicatieve beperking. Over dit onderwerp organiseert het WAP zijn lustrumsymposium, in samenwerking met de Nederlandse Taalunie, de Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen, de Sint Maartenskliniek, de Radboud Universiteit, de Universiteit Antwerpen en de Universiteit Gent.
In een afwisselend programma brengt het symposium wetenschap en praktijk uit Nederland en Vlaanderen bij elkaar.

The interface between memory and language in multilingualism

We offer three positions in psycholinguistics in connection to the project “the interface between memory and language in multilingualism”. This project investigates language processing in a first and second language and its relation with memory processes. The project is unique because of its wide scope of psycholinguistic processes under examination (listening, reading, speaking, self-monitoring, of words, sentences, texts, and discourse), its focus on the interface between language and memory, and in its relation with educational sciences. The project uses laboratory studies (reaction time studies, “megastudies”, corpus studies, eye-tracking, neuro-imaging methods), computational modeling, and intervention studies in classroom settings.

The project is funded by a “concerted research effort” grant from the special research fund of Ghent University, awarded to Rob Hartsuiker (spokesperson), Wouter Duyck, Marc Brysbaert, and Martin Valcke. It runs from 2013 – 2018.

We are currently recruiting three researchers on this project. The researchers will be based at the department of Experimental Psychology ( expsy.ugent.be/staff/cstaff.htm ), of Ghent University ( www.ugent.be/en).


Post 1 (post-doctoral researcher): semantic memory in L1 and L2
The post-doc will investigate the organization of semantic memory in a first and second language of multilinguals, using large-scale data collections (semantic feature generation), computational modeling, and behavioral experiments (cross-language priming). We also expect the post-doc to contribute to the design and stimulus selection of an fMRI study.

Het wordt gefinancierd door het FWO-project G061113N "Presentationele gekloofde zinnen in het Frans en Italiaans: een corpus-gebaseerde vergelijkende analyse", waarvan prof. Karen Lahousse, prof. Béatrice Lamiroy en prof. Stefania Marzo promotoren zijn.
Project
Het project beoogt (i) een corpus-gebaseerde descriptie van de formele en functionele eigenschappen van presentationele gekloofde zinnen in het Fransen/of het Italiaans, en (ii) een analyse van de verschillen en gelijkenissen tussen presentationele en specificationele gekloofde zinnen.
Profiel
Je behaalde een master (of zult die dit academiejaar behalen) in de Taalkunde, Taal- en Letterkunde of Filologie (of gelijkwaardig), met uitstekende studieresultaten;
- je hebt een uitstekende mondelinge en schriftelijke beheersing van het Frans en/of het Italiaans en een goede beheersing van het Engels;
- je hebt sterke analytische vaardigheden om creatief werk in Franse en/of Italiaanse synchrone taalkunde te verrichten;
- je bent internationaal georiėnteerd;
- je bent bij voorkeur vertrouwd met corpus-gebaseerd onderzoek van Frans en/of Italiaans;

Aanbod
De kandidaat krijgt de mogelijkheid om onderzoek te verrichten in de context van bovengenoemd project. Het werken aan eigen onderzoek zal ongeveer 80% van de tijd uitmaken, waarnaast nog 20% dienstverleningsactiviteiten worden gevraagd (zoals hulp bij het onderwijs en onderzoek Franse en/of Italiaanse taalkunde en taalverwerving, administratieve ondersteuning, enz.).
We bieden een voltijds contract, vanaf 1 oktober 2013, voor een periode van 1 jaar, verlengbaar tot 4 jaar na positieve evaluatie (nettosalaris ongeveer 1700 euro per maand). POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN LINGUISTICS on Horizon research project ‘Knowledge and Culture’. Deadline: July first 2013
The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) will be funding the Horizon research project ‘Knowledge and Culture’. This project will be carried out as a collaboration between the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL), the Leiden University Centre for Arts in Society (LUCAS), the Meertens Institute (KNAW), and the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL) of the Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University will be coordinating the research project.

Within this project we are looking for:

A POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN LINGUISTICS
(3 years, 38 hrs a week)

1. Background
In various domains of cognitive science, a new paradigm holds that humans and non-human animals are born with a small set of hard-wired cognitive abilities that are task-specific, language-independent, and non-species-specific. These core knowledge systems are innate cognitive skills that have the capacity for building mental representations of objects, persons, spatial relationships, numerosity, and social interaction. In addition to core knowledge systems, humans possess species-specific, uniquely human abilities such as language and music.
The ‘core knowledge’ paradigm challenges scholars in the humanities to ask the question how nurture and culture build on nature. This project examines the way in which innate, non specifically human, core knowledge systems for object representation, number, and geometry constrain cultural expressions in music, language, and the visual arts. In this research program, four domains of the humanities will be investigated from the point of view of core knowledge:

2. Postdoc project: Number in language: a typological study
As a part of the subproject on Language and Number, this project studies the relation between the properties of the core knowledge system for number and the linguistic properties of numerals in the world’s languages. The project focuses on the following questions:
1. Does the distinction between the Object Tracking System (OTS) and the Approximate Number System (ANS) manifest itself in the numeral systems of the languages of the world, and if so, how?
2. What does the special linguistic status of 1 as opposed to all other numerals tell us about OTS and ANS?
This project will provide a more complete cross-linguistic typology of the morphosyntactic properties of cardinal and ordinal numerals and quantifiers such as many and few.


3. Embedding
The Postdoc will participate in and contribute to a research team comprising a total of 4 PhD students and 4 Postdocs in four teams corresponding to the subprojects outlined above, coordinated by Prof.dr. Johan Rooryck at Leiden University. The Postdoc will work in two locations: LUCL at Leiden University, the home base of the research team, and the Meertens Institute (Prof.dr. Sjef Barbiers). 4. Your profile
We are looking for someone who:
• has completed a doctoral degree in linguistics, preferably with specialization in (morpho-)syntax. PhD ?students who are close to defending their dissertation are also welcome to apply.
• has good knowledge of theoretical and typological approaches to (morpho-)syntactic research
• has a keen interest in cognitive science, core knowledge systems, and linguistics,
• has publications in peer-reviewed journals or with established academic publishers,

• conduct original research in line with both the general research project and the Postdoc-project described above,
• build a large systematic data-collection of the cross-linguistic morphosyntactic properties of numerals, ordinals and quantifiers for the subproject ‘The linguistic typology of number systems and the core knowledge system of number’.
• analyze these linguistic properties and their relation with the core knowledge systems of number.
• present research results at (international) conferences,
• submit research results for publication in peer-reviewed academic journals,

You can choose an appointment for three years at 1.0fte or for four years at 0.75fte. The Postdoc project must result in the publication of a minimum of three articles. Vacancy for two PhD fellowships at Department of Linguistics of the University of Leuven. Deadline: August 31 2013
The research group Quantitative Lexicology and Variational Linguistics (QLVL) of the Department of Linguistics of the University of Leuven is looking for applicants for two fully-funded PhD-fellowships in Linguistics.
The PhD fellowships will be integrated in a project entitled “Exploring probabilistic grammar(s) in varieties of English around the world”, funded by the Odysseus program of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) and supervised by prof. dr. Benedikt Szmrecsanyi (University of Leuven). The project is situated at the crossroads of research on English as a World Language, usage-based theoretical linguistics, variationist linguistics, and cognitive sociolinguistics. It specifically marries the spirit of the Probabilistic Grammar Framework (which posits that grammatical knowledge is experience-based and partially probabilistic) to research along the lines of the English World-Wide paradigm (which is concerned with the dialectology and sociolinguistics of post-colonial English-speaking communities around the world). The overarching objective is to understand the lectal plasticity of probabilistic knowledge of English grammar, on the part of language users with diverse regional and cultural backgrounds. Empirically, the project will tap into corpus material (as sampled e.g. in the International Corpus of English) to probe factors constraining a number of syntactic alternations in the grammar of English, supplementing this type of evidence with rating experiments as necessary.
Each of the PhD projects will be concerned with one of the following syntactic alternations in the grammar of English: the genitive alternation (the president's speech versus the speech of the president), the dative alternation (we sent him a letter versus we sent a letter to him), and particle placement (he looked the word up versus he looked up the word). The project infrastructure includes a postdoctoral researcher, who will coordinate research on the above phenomena.
Profile: You have …
• strong analytical skills and a background in quantitative linguistic analysis; previous exposure to regression modeling (R, SPSS, Rbrul, Varbrul) would be a plus
• an MA (or equivalent) in Linguistics or Philology and academic distinction; students who will only obtain their degree in the fall of 2013 are encouraged to apply as well
• an excellent command of English
• good communication skills (both written and oral) and strong interpersonal skills.
The positions start January 1st 2014 or earlier. The scholarships are initially granted for one year, but are renewable for up to a total of four years, pending positive evaluation. The positions are expected to result in the completion of a PhD.

The Department of Cognitive Science at Johns Hopkins University invites applications for a one-year (renewable for a second year) postdoctoral fellowship for an NSF-funded research grant on the early acquisition of morpho-syntax. Required:

TOPICS AND FORMAT

Proposals for courses and workshops at ESSLLI'2014 are invited in all areas of Logic, Linguistics and Computing and Information Sciences.
Cross-disciplinary and innovative topics are particularly encouraged.

Each course and workshop will consist of five 90 minute sessions, offered daily (Monday-Friday) in a single week. Proposals for two-week courses should be structured and submitted as two independent one-week courses, e.g. as an introductory course followed by an advanced one.
In such cases, the ESSLLI program committee reserves the right to accept just one of the two proposals.

All instructional and organizational work at ESSLLI is performed completely on a voluntary basis, so as to keep participation fees to a minimum. However, organizers and instructors have their registration fees waved, and are reimbursed for travel and accommodation expenses up to a level to be determined and communicated with the proposal notification. ESSLLI can only guarantee reimbursement for at most one course/workshop organizer, and can not guarantee full reimbursement of travel costs for lecturers or organizers from outside of Europe. The ESSLLI organizers would appreciate any help in controlling the School's expenses by seeking complete coverage of travel and accommodation expenses from other sources.

Each proposal should fall under one of the following categories.


* FUNDAMENTAL COURSES *

Such courses are designed to present the basics of a research area, to people with no prior knowledge in that area. They should be of elementary level, without prerequisites in the course's topic, though possibly assuming a level of general scientific maturity in the relevant discipline. They should enable researchers from related disciplines to develop a level of comfort with the fundamental concepts and techniques of the course's topic, thereby contributing to the interdisciplinary nature of our research community.


* INTRODUCTORY COURSES *

Introductory courses are central to ESSLLI's mission. They are intended to introduce a research field to students, young researchers, and other non-specialists, and to foster a sound understanding of its basic methods and techniques. Such courses should enable researchers from related disciplines to develop some comfort and competence in the topic considered. Introductory courses in a cross-disciplinary area may presuppose general knowledge of the related disciplines.


* ADVANCED COURSES *

Advanced courses are targeted primarily to graduate students who wish to acquire a level of comfort and understanding in the current research of a field.


* WORKSHOPS *

Workshops focus on specialized, usually topics of current interest. Workshops organizers are responsible for soliciting papers and selecting the workshop program. They are also responsible for publishing proceedings if they decide to have proceedings.

Course and workshop proposals should follow closely the following guidelines to ensure full consideration.

Each course may have no more than two instructors, and each workshop no more than two organizers. All instructors and organizers must possess a PhD or equivalent degree by the submission deadline.

Course proposals should mention explicitly the intended course category. Proposals for introductory courses should indicate the intended level, for example as it relates to standard textbooks and monographs in the area. Proposals for advanced courses should specify the prerequisites in detail.

The past two decades have seen detailed and wide-ranging investigations of quantification in child language. This work includes a substantial literature exploring the classic “quantifier-spreading” phenomenon (Roeper and DeVilliers 1993, Philip 1995, Crain et al. 1996, Drozd 2001, Drozd and Van Loosbroek 2006, Geurts 2003, Smits 2009), as well as studies of quantifier scope and quantifier raising (Lidz and Musolino 2002, Musolino and Lidz 2005, Syrett and Lidz 2010), and distributivity and collectivity in universal quantification (Brooks and Braine 1996, Brooks and Sekerina 2006).

Independently, quantification has played a central role in developmental research on scalar implicature and the semantic-pragmatics interface (Noveck 2001, Papafragou and Musolino 2003, Huang and Snedeker 2009b). At the same time, important recent work has pursued the connection between quantification and early numerical cognition (Barner et al. 2009, Sullivan and Barner 2011, Brooks et al. 2011). Finally, a number of researchers have investigated aspects of quantification in L2 learners (DelliCarpini 2003, O’Grady 2006, Ionin et al. 2012).

This workshop aims to foster discussion and collaboration by bringing together researchers working on the acquisition of quantification from a variety perspectives and frameworks.

One of the aims of linguistic theory is to explain how language is acquired by different populations: typically developing monolingual children, typically developing multilingual children, monolingual adults, multilingual adults, and language-impaired mono- and/or multilingual children and adults. On the other hand, language acquisition data from all these populations can help formulate and refine linguistic theory.
This year’s workshop of Going Romance is devoted to the interaction between language acquisition and linguistic theory. How do data and phenomena from (different types of) Romance language acquisition inform and shape linguistic theory, and how does linguistic theory frame and constrain the research on the acquisition of Romance languages?
Abstracts on this topic are invited. We especially welcome abstracts that show the interaction between language acquisition and linguistic theory in both directions.

We welcome papers from different theoretical perspectives. Abstracts should be anonymous and no longer than two pages, including references and examples, with margins of at least 1 inch, font size 12, single-spaced. Submissions are limited to a maximum of one individual and one joint abstract per author. Please indicate in your submission details whether your abstract should be considered for the main session (oral presentation or poster) or the workshop. Please submit your abstract(s) through EasyAbs ( linguistlist.org/easyabs/GoRo2013) no later than Monday 1 July 2013 as a pdf file. The files should be anonymous both in the body of the text and the filename. Please make sure all fonts and figures are correctly rendered. Papers not conforming to these requirements will not be taken into consideration. The 13th International Conference on the History of Language Sciences (ICHoLS XIII) will be held at the Centro de Estudos em Letras (CEL) of the Universidade de Trįs-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), in Vila Real, Northern Portugal, during 25–29 August 2014.
ICHoLS conferences have taken place every three years since 1978. Previous venues have been Ottawa (1978), Lille (1982), Princeton (1984), Trier (1987), Galway (1990), Washington (1993), Oxford (1996), Fontenay-St. Cloud (1999), Sćo Paulo-Campinas (2002), Urbana-Champaign (2005), Potsdam (2008), and Saint Petersburg (2011).
Papers relating to any aspect of the history of language sciences are invited, focusing on diverse topic areas ranging from antiquity to the contemporary history of linguistics and from individual case studies to methodological considerations.
The organizers ask that proposals for papers be made in the form of abstracts of 400 words, including a few pertinent references, in an anonymized Word doc or rtf file accompanying the email communication and addressed to

E-Health voor mensen met communicatieve beperkingen: wetenschap en praktijk

Taal- en spraaktechnologie (TST) is technologie die specifiek gericht is op het verwerken van taal en spraak. TST-ontwikkelingen dragen bij aan geavanceerdere E-Health-toepassingen voor de behandeling en ondersteuning van mensen met een communicatieve beperking. Over dit onderwerp organiseert het WAP zijn lustrumsymposium, in samenwerking met de Nederlandse Taalunie, de Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen, de Sint Maartenskliniek, de Radboud Universiteit, de Universiteit Antwerpen en de Universiteit Gent.
In een afwisselend programma brengt het symposium wetenschap en praktijk uit Nederland en Vlaanderen bij elkaar.

Oproep voor poster- en demopresentaties
Tijdens het symposium is er gelegenheid om onderzoek en ervaringen met E-health-toepassingen te presenteren als poster of in de vorm van een demonstratie. Voorstellen voor posters of demo’s kunnen betrekking hebben op bestaande of toekomstige toepassingen waarin ICT, TST en/of apps ingezet worden voor diagnostiek, therapie en ondersteuning van mensen met een communicatieve beperking.
Doel van deze poster- en demosessie is het stimuleren van communicatie en samenwerking tussen taal- en spraakpathologen, logopedisten en taal- en spraaktechnologen. Om onderzoek en ontwikkeling op het gebied van communicatieve beperkingen een vernieuwingsimpuls te geven, zal er een posterprijs worden toegekend aan de meest belovende presentatie. Presentatoren zullen bovendien in de gelegenheid gesteld worden hun werk in een themanummer van een tijdschrift te publiceren.

Samenvattingen voor posterpresentaties (eventueel met demonstraties) kunnen max. 500 woorden bevatten en moeten vóór 31 juli 2013 via de website www.hetwap.nl/symposium2013/ ingediend worden. Een jury zal een prijs uitreiken voor de beste poster.

Call for papers: workshop on the Acquisition of Adjectives Across Languages, Utrecht University, November 28-29, 2013. Deadline: August 15 2013
Cross-linguistic studies of adjective acquisition are crucial to our understanding of the relation between language and cognition, since the adjective category is not universal and reveals a lot of cross-linguistic variation. However, relatively little attention has been given to the acquisition of the adjective category in languages beyond English and to cross-linguistic comparisons in this domain. This workshop aims to bring together experts in the field of adjective learning from different countries – who rarely meet due to being geographically scattered – and thereby stimulate collaborative projects in this area.

We invite abstracts for 20-minute talks (plus 10 min. discussion) on all aspects of adjective acquisition (e.g. semantics, morphology, syntax, pragmatics) in typical and atypical, monolingual and bilingual, first and second language acquisition. Papers on cross-linguistic comparisons are particularly welcome. De Vereniging voor Limburgse Dialect- en Naamkunde looft eens per twee jaar een prijs uit voor de beste universitaire afstudeerscriptie (BA, MA of anderszins) op het gebied van de taalkunde of naamkunde van het Limburgs (of direct aangrenzende dialecten). Met deze prijs wil de vereniging het taalkundig onderzoek naar het Limburgs stimuleren.
De beste inzending wordt beloond met 500 euro en een aanbod tot publicatie van een samenvatting in het Jaarboek van de VLDN. De winnaar wordt bekend gemaakt op het congres van de VLDN, zaterdag 30 november 2013 te Tongeren.

Scripties moeten op papier en digitaal worden ingezonden. The Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL) and the Meertens Instituut Amsterdam are proud to announce that the eleventh Old World Conference in Phonology (OCP 11) will take place in Leiden and Amsterdam from 23 to 25 January 2014. It is organised by a group of local phonologists and follows in the line of previous OCP conferences, which have been held in Leiden, Tromsų, Budapest, Rhodes, Toulouse, Edinburgh, Nice, Marrakech, Berlin, and Istanbul. Abstracts for presentation as either talks or poster papers can be submitted on any phonological issue (theoretical or empirical).

The conference will be preceded by a workshop on the relationship between phonetics and phonology on 22 January. Everyone attending the conference is very welcome to attend the workshop, too.

For the main conference, we invite abstracts either for an oral presentation of 20 minutes (followed by 10 minutes of discussion) or for poster presentation.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY

During the last years a special attention has been devoted to the relationship between phonetics and phonology. However, most of the questions dealing with the role of phonetics in formal models of phonology are still unanswered. As a matter of illustration, some of these questions are the following: are phonological features grounded in phonetics, or are they substance-free? If features are grounded in phonetics, are they based on articulation or acoustics? Is the mapping between the phonological output and phonetics a direct or an indirect one? Should functional explanations of phonological patterns be included in formal phonology, or are synchronic phonological patterns just phonetically arbitrary, meaning that those explanations do not belong to grammar but to other theories such as sound change? How is metrical structure reflected in phonetics? (How) should phonetic variation in the speech signal be captured in phonological theory?

Submission of abstracts

Abstracts for workshop papers need to be sent to the workshop convenor by 30 September; after acceptance of the workshop, abstracts need to be submitted through linguistlist.org/confservices/ICEHL18 by 30 November 2013. Notifications of acceptance of all abstracts will be sent out by 15 February 2014.

Abstracts should not exceed 400 words (exclusive of references) and should clearly state research questions, approach, method, data and (expected) results. Abstracts should also list up to five keywords.

Abstracts will not be edited for typing, spelling, or grammatical errors after submission. Therefore, abstracts should comply with the following layout requirements:
- Abstracts must be single-spaced and fully justified. The standard font will be Calibri, size 11. The margins will be 2,54 top/bottom and 1,91 left/right (Moderate in MS Word).
- References will have a hanging indent of 1,27 cm.
- Submit the abstract as a .doc, .docx or .odt document. If it contains special characters, please send a PDF version to icehl18(removeme)arts.kuleuven.be..

Workshops
A total of four workshops can be scheduled (one per day).
Proposals for workshops are invited by 30 September 2013. The address for submission is icehl18(removeme)arts.kuleuven.be..

Notification of acceptance/rejection will be given by 30 October 2013. After a workshop proposal has been accepted, the convenors will be requested to invite their participants to submit their abstracts through the abstract submission facility EasyAbs linguistlist.org/confservices/ICEHL18
by 30 November 2013. These abstracts will be evaluated individually by the Scientific Committee and the convenors.

Workshop proposals should contain:
a 1000-word description of the topic (including the research questions to be addressed) and a (provisional) list of workshop participants and 400-word abstracts of their papers.

We encourage workshop convenors to distribute an open call for papers on the LinguistList (announce your Call for Papers as a session of ICEHL18) and other fora.

Since we want conference participants to be able to attend individual workshop presentations, ICEHL18 workshops have to be compatible with the main conference schedule. This means that the format of the workshops must be organized around 30 minute presentations (20 min. + 10 min. discussion). Workshops ideally contain 8 to 10 slots and comprise:
an introductory paper by the convenor(s) or by a key-note speaker, which summarizes previous research, specifies the approach(es) to be taken and sets the scope of the papers to be presented.
6 to eight papers a slot for final discussion on the topics covered by the papers, methodological issues and questions for future research.

Multiple papers
One person may submit a single-authored abstract, a single-authored abstract and a co-authored one (not as first author) or two co-authored abstracts (only one as first author). Note that keynote papers within workshops count as ordinary papers. Presentations will be 20 minutes plus 10 minutes question time.

Evaluation
Workshop proposals contain the names of convenors and participants and will be evaluated and ranked by members of the Scientific Committee.

Abstracts submitted to the general session and to the poster session will be evaluated by two members of the Scientific Committee. Workshop papers receive two evaluations by Scientifc Committee members and one by the workshop convenors.

Sinds 2008 voert de Frans-Nederlandse Academie het secretariaat van het Van Gogh beurzenprogramma. Het doel van dit programma is de uitwisseling van Nederlandse en Franse onderzoekers die binnen één onderzoeksgroep werkzaam (willen) zijn, te stimuleren en te ondersteunen. Voorheen maakten alleen VENI, VIDI en VICI laureaten kans op een beurs. Tegenwoordig is de Van Gogh-doelgroep uitgebreid en kunnen alle onderzoekers die bewezen excellent onderzoek verrichten, meedingen naar een Van Gogh-beurs.
Onderzoekers die onderzoekssamenwerking met Frankrijk willen opzetten of versterken, kunnen vanaf 4 februari 2013 hun aanvraag indienen bij de Frans-Nederlandse Academie.

Oproep tot nominaties Descartes-Huygensprijs 2013. Deadline: 1 juli 2013
Tot en met 1 juli 2013 kunt u nominaties indienen voor de Descartes-Huygensprijs van de KNAW. De prijs, een geldbedrag van 23.000 euro, gaat in 2013 naar een excellente Franse onderzoeker in de geestes- en sociale wetenschappen en is bedoeld voor een gastonderzoekerschap van ongeveer zes maanden - onafgebroken of verspreid over meer bezoeken - in Nederland.

De Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (KNAW) kent de Descartes-Huygensprijs sinds 1995 jaarlijks toe om de wetenschappelijke samenwerking tussen Frankrijk en Nederland te stimuleren.

De Descartes-Huygensprijs is ingesteld door de Franse en Nederlandse regeringen. De prijs wordt jaarlijks toegekend aan een Franse en een Nederlandse wetenschappelijke onderzoeker voor hun excellente onderzoek en hun bijdrage aan de Frans-Nederlandse samenwerking. Beurtelings komen de vakgebieden geestes- en sociale wetenschappen, natuurwetenschappen en levenswetenschappen aan bod. De winnaars van 2013 zijn werkzaam in de geestes- en sociale wetenschappen.
