Oproep LOT Populariseringsprijs 2013
Aan alle taalkundigen in Nederland

LOT looft dit jaar wederom de Populariseringsprijs uit, ter stimulering van het vervaardigen van populair-wetenschappelijke bijdragen over een taalwetenschappelijk onderwerp.

De definitie van in aanmerking komende publicaties is uitermate ruim. Het bestuur denkt zowel aan speciaal voor dit doel geschreven bijdragen als aan reeds gepubliceerd materiaal - artikelen, boeken, cd-roms, video's, radio - en televisieprogramma's, websites et cetera. Alleen publicaties met een verschijningsdatum tussen 1 sept 2012 en 31 oktober 2013 kunnen worden voorgedragen.
De bijdrage dient in het Nederlands te rapporteren over actueel taalkundig onderzoek en vervaardigd te zijn door een in Nederland werkzame dan wel wonende taalkundige. Bijdragen dienen de essentie van een onderzoeksvraag en het antwoord daarop toegankelijk te maken voor een ontwikkeld publiek dat niet specifiek taalkundig geschoold is.

De omvang van de LOT-prijs bedraagt 1000 Euro.

Iedere Nederlandse taalkundige onderzoeker kan maximaal één zelf geschreven nieuwe bijdrage ter beoordeling inzenden. Daarnaast kan iedere Nederlandse taalkundige een reeds gepubliceerde bijdrage van een collega (dus niet van eigen hand) voordragen voor de prijsvraag door de desbetreffende bijdrage gemotiveerd aan te melden. Bij voordracht dient vermeld te worden: Naam voorgedragene, titel bijdrage, (e-mail)adres voorgedragene, motivatie voordracht.

De inzendingen worden beoordeeld door een door het LOT benoemde jury die naast taalkundigen ook redacteuren van een dagblad of tijdschrift zal bevatten.

De uitslag zal bekend gemaakt worden op het Taalgala, een feestelijke bijeenkomst voor alle leden van LOT, AVT en Anéla, samen met het bekend maken van de uitslag van de AVT-Anéla dissertatieprijs. Het Taalgala zal plaatsvinden op zaterdag 1 februari in Utrecht.

De sluitingsdatum voor inzending/voordracht is 1 november 2013. Inzendingen / voordrachten kunnen gestuurd worden naar LOT, o.v.v. LOT Populariseringsprijs, Trans 10, 3512 JK Utrecht of via e-mail naar LOT(removeme)uu.nl.

Het bestuur hoopt op een overvloedige inzending. De noodzaak tot effectievere publieksvoorlichting over aard en kwaliteit van het taalkundig onderzoek in Nederland en de resultaten daarvan blijft onverminderd aanwezig.

Tot nu toe was er nauwelijks iets bekend over de ontwikkeling die het Nederlands in Suriname doormaakte vanaf de zeventiende eeuw. Het pas verschenen ‘Woordenboek van het Nederlands in Suriname van 1667 tot 1876’ brengt daar verandering in. De woorden werden verzameld door de overleden bioloog Jan van Donselaar. Nicoline van der Sijs legde de laatste hand aan deze uitgave.

In 2012 werd Peter Hagoort door de KNAW benoemd tot Akademiehoogleraar. In die hoedanigheid gaf hij op maandag 9 september 2013 een openbaar minicollege in het Trippenhuis van de KNAW. Daarin liet hij zien wat de nieuwste hersenscantechnieken ons leren over de manier waarop taal is georganiseerd in ons brein.

Tijdens de vele oorlogen die de Republiek uitvocht, kaapte de vijand nog wel eens Hollandse schepen. De in beslag genomen post werd bewaard, als legitiem bewijs dat het om een vijandig schip ging. Eeuwen later wordt deze gekaapte post bestudeerd. De brieven blijken een unieke blik te werpen op het leven van gewone mannen en vrouwen. Ze beschreven niet alleen hun persoonlijke sores, maar bleken ook geļnteresseerd in het nieuws.

Transfer, incompleteness or the absence of these

Abstract: My Ph.D. project explores the morphosyntax of Spanish and Moroccan Arabic spoken by different generations of heritage speakers, i.e. people who learned these languages as a first language but became bilingual, and typically dominant in Dutch, as they moved to or grew up in the Netherlands. A key motivation for looking into this type of bilingualism is the unique profile of heritage speakers, which is made up of typical L1 traits, such as early acquisition and naturalistic exposure, as well as typical L2 traits, such as incompleteness and transfer. The various findings I present illustrate the role of these different traits and their interactions. It will become clear that most of what is found is virtually indistinguishable from ‘native’ language use (if such a label is at all justified in this context). However, some of the most pervasive effects captured are relatable to incomplete acquisition in some speakers, a topic of central interest in the emerging field of heritage languages. I will be happy to exchange ideas with fellow researchers, especially about methodological and theoretical issues regarding the apparent elusiveness of substantial cross-linguistic influence and the role of exposure factors.
More about the project:
I carry out this research within the Multilingual Netherlands project, alongside researchers studying a variety of other migrant languages, using a common methodology. Data collection proceeds mainly through oral elicitation, with the help of visual stimuli and questionnaires. The obtained data provide a rich source for corpus-wise investigation of morphosyntactic structures. In turn, this groundbreaking large-scale project is embedded in the ERC project Traces of Contact, through which it also connects to the broader field of contact linguistics.

Abstract:

The Expertise Centre of Speech and Language Technology (www.ostt.eu) aims at implementing speech and language technology for (chronic) neurological patients. That is, these patients experience communicative constraints resulting from speech-, language-, motor, cognitive or sensory distortions. To tune available technologies and users’ needs, consortia of health care, academic and educational institutes tend to collaborate intensively. A number of research projects will be discussed.
Unfortunately, despite the potentials of speech and language technology for optimizing these patients’ interaction with their environment, relatively few applications of speech and language technology have a follow-up after the financially supported project phase. In a time that calls for innovation in health care en education, it is vital to find ways for true valorisation. It seems worthwile to consider academic partners’ potential role in facilitating valorisation of speech and language technologies. In this colloquium, an open minded discussion is encouraged.

DRONGO festival over meertaligheid, OBA Amsterdam, 28 september 2013
Zaterdag 28 september 2013 zal in de Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam (OBA) het tweede DRONGO festival over meertaligheid plaatsvinden! Van 10 tot 22 uur zijn er door het hele gebouw van de OBA optredens, interviews, LABS, lezingen en een informatiemarkt. Bij DRONGO vind je het laatste nieuws en de recente ontwikkelingen omtrent onderzoek over meertaligheid. Het festival is voor iedereen die in aanraking komt met en interesse heeft in de moderne meertalige wereld. De toegang van het festival is grotendeels gratis. Maak op het DRONGO festival kennis met onze partners: allerlei bedrijven en organisaties die actief zijn op het terrein van taal. The 10th International Workshop on the Implementation of Logics will be held on December 14th, 2013, colocated with the 19th International Conference on Logic for Programming, Artificial Intelligence, and Reasoning in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

We are looking for contributions describing implementation techniques for and implementations of automated reasoning programs, theorem provers for various logics, logic programming systems, and related technologies. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

+ Propositional logic and decision procedures, including SMT
+ First-order and higher order logics
+ Non-classical logics, including modal, temporal, description, and
non-monotonic logics
+ Formal foundations for efficient implementation of logics
+ Data structures and algorithms for the efficient representation and
processing of logical concepts
+ Proof/model search organization and heuristics for logical reasoning
systems
+ Data analysis and machine learning approaches to search control
+ Techniques for proof/model search visualization and analysis
+ Practical constraint handling
+ Reasoning with ontologies and other large theories
+ Implementation of efficient theorem provers and model finders for
different logics
+ System descriptions of logical reasoning systems
+ Issues of reliability, witness generation, and witness verification
+ Evaluation and benchmarking of provers and other logic-based systems
+ I/O standards and communication between reasoning systems

We are particularly interested in contributions that help the community to understand how to build useful and powerful reasoning systems, and how to apply them in practice.

Researchers interested in participating are invited to submit a position statement (2 pages), a short paper (up to 5 pages), or a full papers (up to 15 pages). Submissions should be made via EasyChair at

Submissions will be refereed by the program committee, which will select a balanced program of high-quality contributions.

If number and quality of the submissions warrant it, we plan to produce a special issue of a recognized journal on the topic of the workshop.

AIMS:

LATA is a yearly conference on theoretical computer science and its applications. Following the tradition of the diverse PhD training events in the field developed at Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona since 2002, LATA 2014 will reserve significant room for young scholars at the beginning of their career. Het behoort tot de opdracht van de aangestelde kandidaat om hoogstaand onderzoek uit te voeren op het domein van de taalverandering en variatie van het Nederlands, toekomstige onderzoeksprogramma's en onderzoeksaanvragen te ontwikkelen en nationale en internationale samenwerkingsverbanden verder uit te bouwen.

Onderwijs
De opdracht van de kandidaat omvat het uitwerken en verzorgen van onderwijs in de opleiding Taal- en Letterkunde (Bachelor en Master) en in de Master Taalkunde. De onderwijsopdracht omvat een geheel van colleges waartoe in elk geval behoren:

The Construction of Dutch in Policy, Practice and Discourse, 1750-1850”, funded by the Dutch national research council NWO.

The project will investigate the origins of linguistic nationalism, focusing on the opposition of standard and non-standard Dutch in public and academic discourse on linguistic diversity, on educational policies aimed at the spread of standard Dutch, and on the effects of educational policies on language use.

We offer

The gross monthly salary is set on €2,042.- in the first year up to €2,612.- gross per month in year four. An appointment with Leiden University includes a pension build-up and facilitates other benefits such as an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%. ‘CHAllenging Speech training In Neurological patients through Interactive Gaming’. The goal of this project is to investigate the potentials of e-Health applications for speech training for neurological patients. Current results indicate the need to develop advanced, motivating training devices that provide guidance on articulation improvement and that allow the integrated benefits of intensified, independent speech training. Serious games are known to have strong motivational power. In this research project we aim to investigate to what extent serious games and game principles motivate and support neurological patients in speech training. To this end, an interactive, intuitive, user adaptive game for speech training which employs advanced speech technology and which is compatible with mobile platforms will be developed and tested.

You will first develop dedicated speech technology, esp. ‘automatic speech recognition’ (ASR) technology, and integrate it in the game.

Aim and Scope
=============

The research activity will aim at investigating and developing novel techniques, methodologies and support tools for Satisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT) for the formal verification of systems. This work will be part of the "Advanced SMT Techniques for Word-level Formal Verification - (WOLF)" project, a three-year research project supported by SRC/GRC ( www.src.org/compete/s201113/), in collaboration with major HW companies.

The ultimate goal of the WOLF project is to provide a comprehensive SMT package to support effective formal verification of systems ranging from RTL circuits all the way up to high-level hardware description languages (e.g. SystemC) and software. The package will be implemented on top of the MathSAT SMT platform ( mathsat.fbk.eu/), and provided as an API.

Candidate Profile
=================

The ideal candidate should have an PhD in computer science or related discipline, and combine solid theoretical background and excellent software development skills (in particular C/C++).

A solid background knowledge and/or previous experience on one of the following topics (in order of preference) is required:

Workshop proposals should contain:

Since we want conference participants to be able to attend individual workshop presentations, ICEHL18 workshops have to be compatible with the main conference schedule. This means that the format of the workshops must be organized around 30 minute presentations (20 min. + 10 min. discussion). Workshops ideally contain 8 to 10 slots and comprise:
an introductory paper by the convenor(s) or by a key-note speaker, which summarizes previous research, specifies the approach(es) to be taken and sets the scope of the papers to be presented.
6 to eight papers a slot for final discussion on the topics covered by the papers, methodological issues and questions for future research.

Multiple papers
One person may submit a single-authored abstract, a single-authored abstract and a co-authored one (not as first author) or two co-authored abstracts (only one as first author). Note that keynote papers within workshops count as ordinary papers. Presentations will be 20 minutes plus 10 minutes question time.

Evaluation
Workshop proposals contain the names of convenors and participants and will be evaluated and ranked by members of the Scientific Committee.

Abstracts submitted to the general session and to the poster session will be evaluated by two members of the Scientific Committee. Workshop papers receive two evaluations by Scientifc Committee members and one by the workshop convenors.

Evidentiality is concerned with speakers’ source of information that they mark as evidence for their claims about the actual world. Evidentiality can be expressed in lexically and grammatically various ways. Languages can mark different types of evidentiality, such as inferential evidentiality, related to epistemic modality, and sensory evidentiality, based on perception. Other important types of evidentiality that are particularly important in the context of narration, are reportative and quotative evidentiality. Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in the linguistic field of evidentiality.
Topics to be addressed during this two-day workshop are the various types of evidentiality markers found in the languages of the world, degrees of their grammaticalization, the relation between evidentiality and epistemic modality, and between evidentiality and perception. We welcome abstracts for 30-minute talks on evidentiality, including 10 minutes discussion. In particular, we would like to receive papers that provide empirical evidence for evidentiality such as corpus data or experimental data. Hopefully, the workshop will open up new directions for fruitful research and future cooperation within this exciting field.

This is a low-budget workshop, so there is no possibility for reimbursement of your travel and accommodation costs. The workshop itself however is free of charge and lunch and dinner will be taken care of for all workshop participants.

Thema
Als leerlingen in het voortgezet onderwijs kwalitatief goede teksten willen schrijven, is het cruciaal dat ze school- en vaktaal gebruiken en een duidelijke tekststructuur aanbrengen. Deze vaardigheden zijn met name van belang bij langere teksten, zoals profielwerkstukken en onderzoeksverslagen. Taalgericht vakonderwijs biedt mogelijkheden om leerlingen zich deze vaardigheden eigen te laten maken. Expliciete instructie en op de leerling afgestemde feedback zijn hierbij essentieel, oftewel: de interactie tussen docent en leerling speelt een belangrijke rol.
Tijdens dit congres gaan we na hoe deze leerling-docent-interactie het best vormgegeven kan worden. Hierbij staat de verbinding tussen wetenschap en praktijk centraal. Het congres fungeert dan ook als een ontmoetingsplek voor onderzoekers en docenten, met als hoofdvragen:
• Wat is er vanuit wetenschappelijk onderzoek bekend over effectieve vormen van instructie over schrijven in de vakken en over feedback op het schrijfproces en -product?
• Welke goede voorbeelden zijn er in de praktijk te ontdekken?

Programma
U kunt plenaire lezingen bijwonen van Rachel Whittaker (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) en een andere internationale spreker, inspiratie opdoen bij de good practices, en met docenten, lerarenopleiders en onderzoekers discussiėren over actuele vragen tijdens parallelsessies met rondetafelgesprekken, workshops en andere interactieve werkvormen. Ten minste één van de parallelsessies zal in het Engels gehouden worden.

Bijdragen
Dit congres kent twee soorten bijdragen.
1) U kunt twee A4’tjes (max. 1000 woorden) indienen waarin u een goed voorbeeld uit uw eigen onderwijspraktijk beschrijft: demonstreer hoe u de schrijfvaardigheid van uw leerlingen stimuleert door middel van interactieve instructie of feedback, of hoe u leraren opleidt om effectieve leerling-docent-interacties over schrijfprocessen en -producten aan te gaan. Dit kan ook werk in uitvoering betreffen. Een bundel met alle good practices zal aan de congresdeelnemers worden uitgedeeld. De beste vier bijdragen worden tijdens het congres plenair gepresenteerd. In uw bijdrage gaat u in op: 1) de relatie met het thema, 2) het praktijkvoorbeeld (materialen, instructies, lesontwerpen, feedbackvormen…), 3) de onderbouwing daarvan en/of de ervaringen daarmee in de praktijk, 4) praktijkimplicaties en/of vragen die u met het publiek wilt bespreken, en eventueel 5) een indicatie (url, dropboxfolder) hoe u het volledige materiaal ter beschikking stelt.
2) U kunt een rondetafelgesprek, workshop, stellingenspel of andere interactieve werkvorm (= alles behalve een lezing) organiseren voor een groep van maximaal 30 personen: een sessie van drie kwartier waarin u gelegenheid creėert om docenten en onderzoekers met elkaar in gesprek te brengen. Hierbij valt te denken aan een discussie over actuele vraagstukken rondom leerling-docent-interactie en de feedback op schrijfproducten, een brainstorm over de concrete invulling van een lessenserie, de ontwikkeling van feedbackcriteria, enz. In uw samenvatting (max. 500 woorden) gaat u in op: 1) de aanleiding, 2) de relatie met het thema, 3) de manier waarop u de interactie vorm wilt geven en 4) de onderwerpen en/of vragen die u met het publiek wilt bespreken.
Combinaties van 1 en 2 zijn ook welkom.

Teacher-student-interaction in subject-specific writing:
research meets practice

Theme
If students in secondary education are to write qualitatively good texts, it is crucial that they use academic as well as domain-specific language, and that they use a clear text structure. These skills are particularly important in writing longer texts, such as inquiry learning projects (Dutch ‘profielwerkstukken’) and research reports. Good opportunities to acquire these skills may be offered in Content and Language Integrated Learning. Explicit instruction and student-contingent feedback are essential, or in other words: the interaction between teacher and student plays an important role.
This conference addresses the ways in which this teacher-student-interaction should be shaped in order to be effective. The motto of this conference is “science meets practice”, which means that we would like the conference to be a meeting place for both researchers, teachers and teacher educators. We will focus on the following main questions:
• What knowledge can be generated from research on effective forms of instruction in subject-specific writing and/or on the effects of feedback on the writing process or product?
• What good practices of tasks and feedback can be found in secondary education practice?

Program
You will attend plenary lectures by Rachel Whittaker (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) and another international scholar, get inspired by teachers who share their good practices, and have discussions with teachers, teacher educators and researchers during parallel sessions with round-table-conversations, workshops and other interactive activities. At least one of the parallel sessions will be held in English.

Contributions
You can contribute to this conference in two ways.
1) You can submit a 2-page proposal (max. 1000 words) in which you describe a good practice from your own educational field: demonstrate how you stimulate subject-specific writing proficiency of your students by means of interactive instruction and/or feedback, or how you train teachers to engage in effective teacher-student-interactions about writing processes or products. Note that this may also involve work in progress. A collection of all good practices will be handed out to the conference participants. Four of the best practices will be presented during the plenary part of the conference. In your contribution, please address the following issues: 1) the relevance to the conference theme, 3) your good practice (materials, instructions, designs, feedback forms…), 4) theoretical or practical evidence for success , 5) practical implications and/or questions you would like to discuss with the audience, and possibly 6) an indication (url, dropbox folder) how you will make sample material available.
2) You can organize a round-table conversation, workshop, debate or any other interactive activity (= anything but a lecture) for a group of 30 people maximum: a session of 45 minutes in which you create the opportunity for teachers and researchers to exchange concepts, practices and research findings. You can consider a discussion about your experiences and concerns in teacher-student-interaction and feedback on writing products, a brainstorm about the content of a specific writing curriculum, the development of feedback criteria, etc. In your contribution (max. 500 words) please address the following issues: 1) background, 2) relevance for the conference theme, 3) interactive format, and 4) topics and/or questions you would like to discuss with your audience.
Proposals combining 1 and 2 are welcome as well.

De Nederlandse Vereniging voor Fonetische Wetenschappen vereniging organiseert op woensdag 18 december 2013 in de Sweelinckzaal in (Drift 21, Utrecht) wederom de Dag van de Fonetiek.

Keynote-speaker op de Dag van de Fonetiek is dit jaar Vincent van Heuven, emeritus hoogleraar Experimentele Linguļstiek en Fonetiek aan de Universiteit Leiden. Hij is ook onbezoldigd hoogleraar aan de Nankai Universiteit (Tianjin, China), associate editor van het tijdschrift Phonetica en lid van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (KNAW). Op 18 december opent hij de Dag van de Fonetiek met de lezing "Forms and functions of stress and accent in spoken language; a cross-linguistic perspective."

Net als voor eerdere edities vragen we iedereen die iets kan vertellen of demonstreren over spraak of spraaktechnologie om bij te dragen aan deze dag. We hopen zo een mooi overzicht te kunnen geven van het fonetisch onderzoek in Nederland en Vlaanderen.

Indien u een bijdrage heeft, stuur dan uiterlijk vrijdag 1 november a.s. een titel en samenvatting (13 regels / 200 woorden) naar het onderstaande e-mailadres.

Voertalen op de Dag van de Fonetiek zijn Nederlands en Engels en samenvattingen kunnen in één van beide talen ingediend worden. Er wordt verwacht dat u de presentatie geeft in dezelfde taal als waarin de titel van uw bijdrage is opgesteld.

The 24th Meeting of Computational Linguistics in The Netherlands (CLIN 2014) will be organised by the Institute for Dutch Lexicology (INL) and the Dutch-Flemish HLT Agency (TST-Centrale). CLIN 2014 will take place in Leiden, the Netherlands on January 17th, 2014.

Researchers are invited to submit, in English, abstracts describing work on all aspects of computational linguistics and related language and speech technologies and applications. In addition to the regular scientific tracks, CLIN 2014 aims to have two special tracks:
• a lexicography track with presentations on the computational support of dictionary making, e.g. word sense disambiguation, distributional semantics, (web) data mining and semantic role labelling.
• an industry track with scientific presentations on topics such as R&D challenges in industry, collaborations between industry and academia, and experiences with "real-world" applications.
Submissions should include:

• Presentation title
• An abstract of 250 words maximum, outlining their presentation
• Presentation type preference (oral presentation or poster)
• Submission for industry or lexicology track, or none.

STIL Thesis Prize
Since CLIN 20, a special annual thesis prize, sponsored by STIL, is awarded to the best MA-thesis in computational linguistics. STIL is the Stichting Toepassing Inductieve Leertechnieken.
MA theses submitted to and evaluated at a university or organization of higher education in the Netherlands or Flanders are eligible for the prize. The thesis should address a topic in computational linguistics or its applications, and may be written in Dutch or English.

Conference Description

There are different ways of reporting what someone else has said. Common forms of speech reports are direct speech (Mary said “I am sick”) and indirect speech (Mary said that she is sick). Pretense and role play are closely related phenomena. Like in direct speech, someone engaging in role play adopts the perspective of another person and produces utterances from that shifted standpoint (I am sick) (Harris, 2000). Another interesting parallel is that children start to use speech reports and to engage in role play at around the same time, namely at two to three years of age. This is well before they pass standard false belief tests (at around four) which are often taken to be the hallmark of Theory of Mind and metarepresentation (e.g. Perner, 1991). Since at least some forms of reported speech exhibit recursion, intensionality, and/or clausal embedding, this developmental gap may shed new light on the debate over the relationship between Theory of Mind and the syntax/semantics of recursive embedding (e.g. de Villiers & de Villiers, 2000). The aim of the conference is to discuss the cognitive and conceptual relationship of reported speech, pretense and cognitive abilities such as perspective-taking, metarepresentation and Theory of Mind.

This book provides ten case studies in Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG), a typologically-oriented theory of the organization of natural languages that has risen to prominence in recent years. The Casebook has been conceived as a homage to Kees Hengeveld, the intellectual father of the theory, who is also one of the authors. In his contribution he shows how FDG offers a radically new approach to constituent ordering. Other themes covered are evidentiality, modality, adpositions, verb morphology, possession, raising, sequence of tenses, semi-fixed constructions and prelinguistic conceptualization. The volume contains an introduction that explains the rudiments of FDG and summarizes the ten remaining chapters. The Casebook moves on from Hengeveld & Mackenzie’s (2008) Functional Discourse Grammar to show how the theory is applied to linguistic problems new and old. The languages treated are Blackfoot, Dutch, English, Spanish, Welsh, indigenous languages of Brazil, and many others.

The presentation will start with a brief introduction by the editors and continue with a number of presentations by the authors of individual chapters, which will each last about 10 minutes and be followed by 5 minutes discussion.
