Registration for the LOT Summer School (hosted by CLS Radboud University Nijmegen) is open!
The next LOT Summer School will take place June 16-27 2014, and will be hosted by the Centre for Language Studies (CLS) of Radboud University Nijmegen. Registration is open untill May the 20th.

The courses are free for all PhD-researchers and second year research master students who are affiliated with one of the eight LOT Institutes. For post doc researchers and PhD-researchers and research master students who are not affiliated to one of the LOT institutes: please check the General info on our website to see whether you can participate or not.
Participants are encouraged to present their work during the weekly poster session. They may present a poster with original work, try-out their poster for an upcoming conference, or present a poster from a previous conference.

Gebaren bij 40 graden onder nul
Inuit Gebarentaal wordt door minder dan veertig mensen gebruikt en is daardoor een bedreigde taal. Promovenda Joke Schuit trotseerde de barre weersomstandigheden van Noord-Canada en legde deze bijzondere gebarentaal vast voor het nageslacht en de wetenschap. Ze promoveert op 24 januari aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

Moedertaal dringt door in tweede taal
Bij het leren van een tweede taal speelt de moedertaal een cruciale rol. Als de tweede taal lijkt op de moedertaal, is het een steun. Maar als de tweede taal ver af staat van je moedertaal, kan het ook een last zijn. Om fouten op te sporen in het leerproces, maken studenten in Utrecht handleidingen voor docenten Nederlands als tweede taal (NT2). Daarin kun je per taal zien op welke onderdelen deze afwijkt van het Nederlands.

Diagnostic testing of reading and writing skill: knowing chalk from cheese

Reading and writing are of paramount importance for school learning. Text comprehension and production skills matter, both as educational outcomes and as tools for learning and instruction. Since reading and writing achievement vary widely, testing of literacy is a core concern for schools and for educational systems at large. Most tests for reading comprehension and written composition are norm-referenced and compare students’ test scores to those of peers. Some tests claim to be diagnostic: they indicate students’ success in dealing with specific types of problems in written communication. Diagnostic tests are in strong demand, because schools and educational authorities are in need of information that may help them to improve the literacy levels of their students. The demand for and the supply of diagnostic instruments, however, need not match, inasmuch as the theoretical and empirical requirements for proper diagnostic testing are quite stringent. In my lecture I will develop the notion of ‘diagnostic testing’ and ‘problem type’ in the context of literacy tests, I will the empirical literature on diagnostic testing of reading comprehension and written composition and I will comment on the claims of existing diagnostic literacy tests for Dutch as L1.

Language use in face-face communication often involves the visual-manual modality; i.e, visible actions designed and recruited for communication, a unique aspect of our species [1]. Hearing speakers use and interpret speech in the context of gestures, eye gaze etc and deaf people use language solely within the visual-manual modality. In this talk i will present recent behavioral and neural insights about how using, processing and learning of language (acquisition) in the context of visual-manual modality might differ than when we consider speech/written text alone [2- 7]. Thus any study of language needs to be incorporated, into a coherent framework that can account not only for sign languages but also for spoken languages accompanied by visible communicative actions, and as such widen the lens of language [8]. After an introduction to our PI group's research profile and recent findings individual talks (each 15min) will follow.

Proposal for a better understanding of subtractive bilingualism in language assessment

First language (L1) attrition is the subject of new research in the field of bilingualism studies. Also known as “subtractive bilingualism” (contrasted to the so-called “additive” type), an important confirmation of work in this area has been to recognize loss of L1 competence as a normal outcome of child second language learning. Worldwide, as schooling expands to include greater numbers of previously marginalized and excluded language-minority school-age children, the subtractive variant may even become, with time, more common. In language assessment, this circumstance presents challenges for practitioners, foremost among which is developing a clear framework for avoiding misinterpretation of testing results based on imprecise conceptions of deficient language ability, often categorized impressionistically as “semilingualism.”

How informative is monolingual assessment of bilingual children?
Elin Thordardottir (McGill University)
A full evaluation of the language skills of a bilingual child needs to include assessment of both languages. However, in clinical (and research) work, such assessments are fairly rare. Difficulties are related to the lack of clinicians with the required language skills, lack of test materials and normative data across languages, and time restrictions. In light of these constraints, it is important to make maximal use of the assessment results that can be obtained. This talk will address how monolingual assessment data can be put to maximal use, in the identification of language impairment in bilingual children, in treatment decisions and assessment of the child’s functioning in various situations.
Dominance and proficiency in early and late adult bilingualism
Silvina Montrul (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)
In bilingualism, language dominance typically refers to the relative fluency, proficiency and degree of language use of each language. Although the concept of equal linguistic proficiency in the two languages is a possibility, the reality is that in most bilinguals one language is more dominant or stronger than the other either in terms of proficiency, degree of language use, or both. In this talk I make a distinction between dominance and proficiency, illustrating how these have been estimated and measured in representative research. I then turn to consider how proficiency and dominance have been assumed in most studies of unbalanced bilinguals whose family language is the weaker language (also known as heritage speakers in the United States), and actually measured in a few others. I will discuss why these measures, although not ideal, are important and necessary for research investigating the linguistic abilities of heritage speakers in their weaker language on the one hand, and for comparing the linguistic abilities of heritage speakers and second language learners, on the other. I will also show how these measures correlate with degree of language transfer from the stronger language and with other measures in these populations. Although measuring one or the two languages of bilinguals may contribute to the monolingual view of bilinguals (Grosjean 2008, Treffers-Daller 2010), I argue that measuring proficiency, and assessing language dominance more generally, is not only a crucial component of rigorous experimental research, but it also has uses and implications for educational and clinical practices.

Comparing adult bilinguals’ proficiency in a minority and a majority language setting

This presentation is concerned with the measurement of relative language proficiency in 20 adult bilinguals all of whom have been exposed to two languages simultaneously from birth. Half of these grew up in France with German as a minority language, and half grew up in Germany with French as a minority language. Both groups comprise very fluent speakers of both languages only. The major research questions are (i) what single measure is the most faithful with respect to speakers’ actual proficiency- differences between both languages; (ii) among several measures that are applied to the same data, which point in the same direction, and which give prima facie contradictory results (e.g., a relatively higher or lower proficiency rating in language B than in language A on measure Mn, but vice versa on measure Mn+1). Measures discussed include: gender marking, cloze tests, global accent, speech rate, and self-reported language preference. Here, the terms dominant and more proficient are used synonymously; both are defined generally with respect to the resemblance of the data to monolingual norms. We also briefly discuss problems arising for such definitions.

Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary research field that seeks to understand the nature of the human mind, in all its implications.
The International Symposium on Brain and Cognitive Science (ISBCS) invites research from all the fields that are connected to cognitive science. The individual disciplines include Artificial Intelligence, Linguistics, Anthropology, Psychology, Neuroscience, Philosophy, and Education. Each discipline brings a set of tools, perspectives, and questions to the table. However, the big picture of the human mind cannot emerge by studying this multi-layered problem with a single lens. Communication and collaboration are essential for the cognitive scientist. It is under these premises that we initiate ISBCS.

One mission of ISBCS is to be a premier academic meeting of the cognitive science community. Established jointly by Bogazici University, Middle East Technical University and Yeditepe University (i.e. by the three universities that offer cognitive science programs in Turkey), ISBCS is planned to be held annually to gather researchers and students from leading national and international centers working on all areas of cognitive science. Our aim is to establish a platform where students can learn about recent research in cognitive science, researchers can network and initiate collaborations, and the participants can receive valuable feedback on their work.

The 6th North American Summer School in Logic, Language and Information (NASSLLI 2014), a bi-annual summer school loosely modeled on the long-running ESSLLI series in Europe, will be held at the University of Maryland, College Park, June 23 - 27, 2014. In addition, we will run three intensive introductory courses ("bootcamps") on Saturday and Sunday, June 21-22. Additional events will be held during the weekend following the summer school, June 28-29.

The summer school will consist of 18 courses, scheduled in five parallel sessions throughout the week. Courses will meet for 90 minutes on each of five days. The instructors are prominent researchers who volunteer their time and energy to present work in their disciplines. NASSLLI courses are aimed at graduate students and advanced undergraduates in any of the fields represented at the summer school, but will also be of interest to post-docs and researchers in those fields. Courses are designed with an interdisciplinary audience in mind, by instructors who enjoy addressing students and colleagues from a wide range of disciplines.

We are working to keep the registration fee low for NASSLLI participants. The expected registration fee is $175.00 for students and academics, $50.00 for UMD affiliates and $400 professional rate. The exact costs and online registration will be available on the NASSLLI website in mid-March.


NASSLL is located on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park. The University of Maryland is located in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, and is accessible by Metro from downtown Washington DC.


All NASSLLI participants are responsible for securing their own accommodations during their stay in College Park. However, NASSLLI participants may request accommodation in the South Campus Residence Hall on the University of Maryland, College Park campus. There are also a number of hotels located in College Park within walking distance of the campus.

The summer school course in language description and linguistic fieldwork will give you a broad introduction to the practical and methodological aspects of fieldwork, and the art of language description. It will also provide insight in the structures of two unfamiliar languages. The course consists of two parts: a structural course of a non-familiar language (Plains Cree , Algonquian, Amerindian, Canada) and fieldwork workshops with a speaker of an underdescribed language.

we would like to draw your attention to a one-week summer school on
infant language development that takes place this July in Potsdam.
We are pleased to offer the following four courses:

This summer school is intended to bring together students as well as
post-doc researchers working on infant language acquisition in Europe.

The RefNet Summer School on Psychological and Computational Models of
Language will run from 24-30 Aug, Edinburgh, UK.

One reason why language is such a powerful tool for building social and
cognitive capacities is that it allows us to refer, that is, to
identify entities ? objects, processes, or ideas. Unsurprisingly,
several academic disciplines attempt to model our ability to refer.
Surprisingly, those disciplines do not often work together. RefNet is
an EPSRC research network whose goal is to promote research on
reference by building a community of researchers who can benefit from
advances across disciplines. This summer?s RefNet Summer School on
Psychological and Computational Models of Language will introduce young
researchers to research techniques from psychology, computing science,
and linguistics, among them eye-tracking, algorithmic models, Bayesian
reasoning, and mixed-effects modelling. While the summer school will
focus on the production of referring expressions, its short courses
provide foundations for interdisciplinary work in many areas.

Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic with a population of almost 400.000 and is the country's judiciary and trade-fair center. Call for Papers:

Specific Language Impairment (SLI) is a disorder characterized by slow language development, without other cognitive or neurological deficits. This workshop intends to discuss different topics about the diagnosis and causes of Specific Language Impairment. One of the goals of the workshop is to supply the phonological, lexical, morphosyntactic or pragmatic abilities of children with SLI. A main problem in SLI is to provide a differential diagnosis which can distinguish SLI from other syndromes like autism, receptive language disorder or attention deficit disorder. In fact, so far the criteria to diagnose SLI has been mainly by exclusion. In addition, another topic that it’s going to be included is the causes of SLI: genetic, environmental, linguistic difficulties, cognitive factors, learning disabilities. We also encourage new findings after applying methodologies like event related potentials, fMRI, eye tracking or MEG.
Authors are invited to send one copy of an abstract in English for review. Abstracts must be at most one page long on an A4 or letter-size sheet (8.5'' by 11'') with one-inch margins and typed in at least 12-point font. An optional second page is permitted for data and references. Abstracts must be anonymous.

De Faculteit der Geesteswetenschappen biedt u samenwerking met vooraanstaande onderzoekers binnen onderzoekinstituten die - mede door een multidisciplinaire benadering - internationaal hoog staan aangeschreven. Bovendien geeft u onderwijs in een dynamische omgeving waarin nieuwe onderwijsmethodieken worden ontwikkeld.

Met de nieuwe docenten volgt u een uitgebreid introductieprogramma en krijgt u intensieve begeleiding gedurende het eerste jaar van de aanstelling. Aanvullende didactische scholing maakt deel uit van de aanstelling. Hierbij wordt rekening gehouden met eerder verworven competenties blijkend uit het onderwijsportfolio van de kandidaat. Het behalen van de ‘basiskwalificatie onderwijs’ behoort tot het verplichte introductieprogramma.

U bent deskundig op het brede terrein van de Nederlandse taalkunde en meer in het bijzonder de dynamiek van taal zoals zichtbaar in taalvariatie en taalontwikkeling. U bent inzetbaar in alle taalkundeonderdelen van de bachelor Nederlandse taal en cultuur en bent in staat deze verder te ontwikkelen. U kunt ook taalkundeonderwijs verzorgen in de bachelor taal en communicatie, de eenjarige master Nederlandse taal en cultuur, de research master Linguistics en enkele interdisciplinaire programma’s. Uw onderzoek past goed in het ACLC en sluit aan bij dat van andere leden van de capaciteitsgroep Nederlandse taalkunde. U bent in staat diverse bestuurlijke taken met succes te vervullen.

Post-doc fellowships at Potsdam Centre for Language, variation and Migration, Germany, deadline: April 15 2014
The State of Brandenburg has launched a progamme "Brandenburg International" where one can apply for post-doc fellowships for 24 months (salary equal to Marie Curie stipend for experienced researchers + mobility and travel allowance). The fellowships are for international postdocs coming to Brandenburg to do research here. Since Potsdam is part of Brandenburg, we want to make use of this, and are looking for postdocs who are interested in visiting the Centre for Language, Variation, and Migration here for two years.

the Centre "Language, Variation, and Migration" is a lively research centre that serves as an umbrella for a range of research projects, and brings together junior and senior researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds interested in the topics of language variation and multilingualism in the context of migration. It is also the core of a Germany-wide network of research clusters interested in these topics. Apart from invited talks, we regularly host international researchers for short and longer visits to the centre.
The new Brandenburg programme would fit very well into this, so we are eager to find candidates.

Het Meertens Instituut in Amsterdam is voor het Europees project ‘de meertalige uitdaging voor de EU burger’ op zoek naar een PhD voor etnografisch onderzoek naar taalkeuze in een zorginstelling in Limburg.

Achtergrond van het project
Dit onderzoek maakt deel uit van een grootschalig Europees project naar ‘de meertalige uitdaging voor de EU burger’. Het doel van het onderzoek is om te achterhalen of het gebruik van een specifieke taalvariėteit het welbevinden en sociale integratie van ouderen in een zorginstelling in Limburg beļnvloedt. Het spreken van een bepaalde taalvariėteit heeft niet voor iedereen dezelfde symbolische waarde maar wordt onder meer door context, gesprekspartners, gespreksonderwerp en type interactie bepaald. Taalkeuze in een meertalige zorginstelling vormt daarom een inherent onderdeel van processen van in- en uitsluiting.
Het onderzoek wordt gefinancierd door (i) het EU FP7 Framework (coördinator Prof. L.isa Cheng Universiteit Leiden), in het kader van de aanvraag Advancing the European Multilingual Experience (AThEME) en in het bijzonder binnen de component Multilingualism and Communicative Impairments; (ii) Maastricht University, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) en (iii) Meertens Instituut.
Het onderzoek zal uitgevoerd worden aan het Meertens Instituut in Amsterdam maar de opleiding vindt plaats binnen de Graduate School van UM-FASoS in Maastricht.

Het opzetten en uitvoeren van onderzoek naar ‘Taalkeuze in de zorg in Limburg’ met etnografische methoden als langdurige participerende observatie.
De PhD observeert en analyseert dagelijkse praktijken in een zorgcentrum, met speciale aandacht voor de interactie van twee- of meertalige ouderen met medebewoners, verzorgers, therapeuten, artsen, familie en bezoekers. Daarnaast maakt de PhD gebruik van sociale netwerkanalyse en zal hij/zij interviews afnemen met bewoners, bezoekers en personeel van het zorgcentrum.
Het onderzoek dient uit te monden in een proefschrift.

The Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL, www.hum.leiden.edu/lucl/), the institute of linguistics at the Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University, is hosting a VICI-research programme entitled “Reconstructing history through language in the Lesser Sunda Islands”, funded by the Dutch national research council NWO.

Project description: In areas without written historical records, where archaeological and ethnographic data are absent or sparse, language forms the backbone of our understanding of socio-cultural history. This project investigates one such region, in eastern Indonesia. What can languages spoken in the Lesser Sunda Islands today tell us about the histories of its various population groups? Answering this question requires a novel, productive conjunction of descriptive and contact linguistics, historical linguistics, and language typology studies.

Through synchronic language data, this project traces the socio-cultural history of population groups on Flores, Pantar, and Alor. It combines linguistic tracing of cultural contact and migration (e.g. kinship terminology, place names, ritual language) with three case studies of contact-induced transfer between Papuan and Austronesian languages, involving superstrate, adstrate and substrate influence respectively. Qualitative data, comparisons, and historical scenarios are quantitatively cross-validated. This contrastive comparison of different paths of change at a regional level, with typology as a constant and quantitative validation of qualitative results, will truly break new ground.

For two of our case studies of contact-induced change we are currently looking for

- Conducting original research on one of the following topics
1. Transfer of words: Indonesian and Abui. This research explores current contact between Indonesian (Austronesian) and Abui (Papuan; Kratochvķl 2007, Kratochvķl and Delpada 2008). By analysing and comparing the language of bilingual middle-aged adults and pre-adolescent bilingual children, you will be able to chart changes that are ongoing in a small Papuan language dominated by an influential Austronesian language.
2. Language shift: Lamaholot. In the area where Lamaholot (Austronesian) is spoken today, no Papuan languages are spoken today, but observations gleaned from the sources available on Lamaholot grammar (Nagaya 2012, Nishiyama and Kelen 2007, Keraf 1978, Arndt 1937) suggest that it has a possible Papuan substrate. In this research, you will investigate to what extent these observations are supported by synchronic Lamaholot data. Is Lamaholot the result of a shift? If it is, what does this suggest about the lexicon and structure of the Papuan substrate language(s) once spoken in the Lamaholot area?
- Writing a PhD thesis
- Submitting research results for publication in peer-reviewed academic journals
- Presenting papers at (international) conferences
- Some teaching in the second and third year of the appointment

We offer

RomTin is an informal workshop at which junior researcher in Romance linguistics can present their research to other junior researchers as well as to more senior researchers. It is an excellent chance to meet other people working on Romance Linguistics in an informal setting and to get feedback on your research. RomTiN will take place on the afternoon of Friday June 13th, 2014 in Leiden.

Ben jij een (net afgestudeerde) MA-student of een AIO? Doe je taalkundig onderzoek naar de Romaanse talen? Dan is RomTiN speciaal voor jou in het leven geroepen! RomTiN is een informele workshop waar junior onderzoekers op het gebied van de Romaanse taalkunde hun onderzoeksresultaten kunnen presenteren aan een gemend publiek van zowel senior onderzoekers als mede-AIOs/MA-studenten. RomTiN is dé ideale gelegenheid om kennis te maken met andere onderzoekers op het gebied van de Romaanse taalkunde en om feedback te krijgen op je onderzoek. RomTiN zal plaatsvinden op 13 juni 2014 in Leiden.

Geļnteresseerd? Dien dan snel een korte beschrijving van hetgeen je wil presenteren in door te mailen naar e.schoorlemmer(removeme)hum.leidenuniv.nl. Presentaties over elk onderwerp binnen de Romaanse taalkunde (Semantiek, sociolinguļstiek, fonologie, fonetiek, syntaxis, pragmatiek en corpus linguļstiek) zijn van harte welkom. De presentaties zullen ieder 20 minuten duren gevolgd door 10 minuten discussie.

Om RomTin door te kunnen laten gaan hebben we minstens 5 bijdragen nodig. Er is een maximum van 8 presentaties. Als we meer dan 8 presentaties ontvangen, dan zal er een kleine review-procedure plaats vinden. De 8 hooggerangschikte abstracts zullen dan geselecteerd worden voor presentatie.

This workshop is the ninth in a series of international meetings devoted to the issue of writing systems. Earlier themes included ‘What Spelling Changes’ (1997), ‘Writing Language’ (2000), ‘From Letter to Sound’ (2002), ‘Mapping graphemes onto phonemes’ (2004), ‘Constraints on Spelling Changes’ (2006), ‘Typology of Writing Systems’ (2008), ‘Units of Language - Units of Writing’ (2010) and ‘The Architecture of Writing Systems’ (2012). Previous meetings were held in Nijmegen (The Netherlands), Cologne (Germany), Antwerp (Belgium) and Braunschweig (Germany). This ninth workshop will take place in Brighton (UK).
The writing systems workshops have offered a forum for discussion between researchers from a range of different countries and linguistic backgrounds, working in a variety of fields of writing research such as theoretical linguistics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics and language education.

The focus of this 9th workshop is the use of databases and lexicons. Especially welcome are contributions on the following questions:
? What kind of orthographic information is available in databases?
? In what ways can mono- and crosslingual information be incorporated?
? To what extent can rule-based information be employed in lexicons and/or databases?
? How can the relationship between orthography and phonology be represented in databases/lexicons?
? What practical purposes (e.g. computational, pedagogic, lexicographic) can be served by databases/lexicons?

After last year's great success, we are pleased to announce The 2nd Postgraduate and Academic Researchers in Linguistics at York (PARLAY) Conference. This one-day conference is designed to give postgraduates with an interest in linguistics from all research areas an opportunity to present and discuss their research in a friendly and intellectually stimulating setting at the University of York. Undergraduate students are also welcome to participate in this event. This year, PARLAY is being run as an interdisciplinary event by a committee comprised of researchers from the Departments of Linguistics, Education and Psychology.

The conference will be held on Friday 12th September 2014 in the Berrick Saul Building, which acts as a vibrant hub of research for postgraduates in the arts and humanities. A locally-sourced lunch will be provided, along with refreshments throughout the day. A conference dinner, to which all delegates are invited, will be held in York in the evening.

In the beginning of the 20th Century, language was studied as clearly defined homogenous systems, independent from other cognitive mechanisms (e.g. social or spatial cognition). However, during the second half of the 20th Century, sociolinguistic studies challenged this perspective considering languages as evolving and heterogeneous systems. This structured heterogeneity is due to their internal dynamics, the contacts between them, and their links with social organization, which is itself evolving, composite and multi-layered. This new perspective has repercussions on language acquisition studies. The language environment the child/learner is confronted to is variable and part of this variation is organized by social factors.
ViLA2 aims to bring together the growing amount of research that takes into account language-internal variation as well as variation between two or more languages in both first and second language acquisition. The conference, a follow-up to a 2012 workshop (Münster, Germany), will be held at the University of Grenoble, in the French Alps. It aims to cover the following four thematic issues:
1/ Child acquisition of dialectal varieties of the first language
2/ Child multilingual and multidialectal acquisition within multilingual communities
3/ Acquisition of language-internal variation as well as language mixing in the case of a second language learning in contact with native speakers (e.g. study abroad, migration)
4/ Lifelong second dialect acquisition.
We welcome proposals for 20-minute paper presentations followed by10-minute discussions that address the above issues, with one more of the following perspectives:
- Description and modeling of the appearance of adult- or native-like sociolinguistic knowledge and patterns
- Cognitive or linguistic underlying mechanisms
- Language socialization
- Acquisition of the indexical field and links between linguistic and social knowledge
- Influence of the environment: family, peers, and teachers
- Studies contrasting or combining theoretical views: formal approaches, constructionist and usage-based approaches, etc.

Geographical linguistics (or dialectology) has a long tradition:
languages and dialects have been put on maps, and those maps have been studied since the mid of the 19th Century. However, recent decades have seen a rapid increase in insights into linguistic structure as well as in geographic technology, and those two have not always been completely matched to each other, so that one might feel that current linguistic maps leave things to be desired for on both ends.

Many questions arise. For instance, how can regions be identified from mapped data? What are good methods to map linguistic properties? Is it possible to map grammatical (sub)systems instead of individual grammatical features and if so how? How can geographic information systems (GIS) best be applied to linguistic data? What can linguistic mapping learn from mapping techniques used in other fields of science? How can we deal with data noise and data sparsity?

This workshop aims to bring together researchers with a background in linguistics and researchers with a background in mapping. We invite the submission of abstracts on the relation between linguistics and geographical maps, including but not limited to:

* development and storage of linguistic data with geographic features
* the use of geographical data in linguistic argumentation
* visualization of linguistic data on geographic maps
* identifying regions in mapped data from any field of science

Proposals for courses and workshops at ESSLLI'2015 are invited in all areas of Logic, Linguistics and Computing Sciences.
Cross-disciplinary and innovative topics are particularly encouraged.

Each course and workshop will consist of five 90 minute sessions, offered daily (Monday-Friday) in a single week. Proposals for two-week courses should be structured and submitted as two independent one-week courses, e.g. as an introductory course followed by an advanced one.
In such cases, the ESSLLI programme committee reserves the right to accept just one of the two proposals.

All instructional and organizational work at ESSLLI is performed completely on a voluntary basis, so as to keep participation fees to a minimum. However, organizers and instructors have their registration fees waved, and are reimbursed for travel and accommodation expenses up to a level to be determined and communicated with the proposal notification. ESSLLI can only guarantee reimbursement for at most one course/workshop organizer, and can not guarantee full reimbursement of travel costs for lecturers or organizers from outside of Europe. The ESSLLI organizers would appreciate any help in controlling the School's expenses by seeking complete coverage of travel and accommodation expenses from other sources.


Each proposal should fall under one of the following categories.

Such courses are designed to present the basics of a research area, to people with no prior knowledge in that area. They should be of elementary level, without prerequisites in the course's topic, though possibly assuming a level of general scientific maturity in the relevant discipline. They should enable researchers from related disciplines to develop a level of comfort with the fundamental concepts and techniques of the course's topic, thereby contributing to the interdisciplinary nature of our research community.

Introductory courses are central to ESSLLI's mission. They are intended to introduce a research field to students, young researchers, and other non-specialists, and to foster a sound understanding of its basic methods and techniques. Such courses should enable researchers from related disciplines to develop some comfort and competence in the topic considered. Introductory courses in a cross-disciplinary area may presuppose general knowledge of the related disciplines.

Advanced courses are targeted primarily to graduate students who wish to acquire a level of comfort and understanding in the current research of a field.

Workshops focus on specialized topics, usually of current interest.
Workshops organizers are responsible for soliciting papers and selecting the workshop programme. They are also responsible for publishing proceedings if they decide to have proceedings.


Course and workshop proposals should follow closely the following guidelines to ensure full consideration.

Each course may have no more than two instructors, and each workshop no more than two organizers. All instructors and organizers must possess a PhD or equivalent degree by the submission deadline.

Course proposals should mention explicitly the intended course category. Proposals for introductory courses should indicate the intended level, for example as it relates to standard textbooks and monographs in the area. Proposals for advanced courses should specify the prerequisites in detail.

It is a great pleasure to announce the Fourth Central European Conference in Linguistics for Graduate Students (CECIL’S 4). For the first time, the conference will be held outside Hungary — in Poland. It is organized by the Institute of English of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. CECIL’S 4 will take place on August 20-21, 2014 in the Institute of East-Central Europe in Lublin, Poland.

The two-day conference aims to bring together postgraduate students in linguistics from a wide range of research areas, providing an interdisciplinary forum for students to present and discuss their work in an intellectually stimulating and informal setting.
We invite PhD and MA students for abstract submissions in any field of theoretical linguistics, especially on topics in syntax, morphology, phonology (including prosody), formal semantics and pragmatics (including information structure), as well as their interfaces with phonetics, language acquisition, and psycholinguistics. Both theoretical and experimental papers are solicited, and synchronic and diachronic approaches are equally welcome. The conference will include both oral and poster sessions. Each talk will be given 35 minutes, including 10 minutes for discussion. The language of the conference is English.

Nederlandse en Franse onderzoekers die een samenwerkingsverband willen beginnen of voortzetten kunnen nu een reisbeurs aanvragen voor de periode 2014-2015. Het programma
Doel van het Van Goghprogramma is om de uitwisseling van Nederlandse en Franse onderzoekers binnen één onderzoeksproject te stimuleren en te ondersteunen om zo nieuwe en duurzame samenwerkingsverbanden te creėren.

De doelgroep
Het programma richt zich op excellente onderzoekers die zijn verbonden aan Nederlandse onderzoeks- en kennisinstellingen die samenwerken met Franse onderzoekers of dit ambiėren. Een voorwaarde is dat de Franse onderzoekers ook een reisbeurs krijgen van het Franse Van Goghprogramma voor een bezoek aan hun Nederlandse collega's.

De beurs
De beurzen zijn uitsluitend bedoeld voor reis- en verblijfskosten en bedragen tussen €1.500 en €4.000 per onderzoeksteam. De maximale duur van de samenwerking is twee jaar. Na het eerste jaar kan een vervolgaanvraag worden ingediend voor een tweede jaar.

Elk jaar dat er geen Anéla-conferentie wordt gehouden, organiseert Anéla de Voorjaarsstudiedag, een ééndags congres waarbij leden en geļnteresseerde niet-leden van Anéla samenkomen en hun werk presenteren rondom een specifiek thema. Dit jaar vindt de Voorjaarsstudiedag niet in het voorjaar maar in het najaar plaats. Vandaar dus ook dat de Voorjaarsstudiedag dit jaar eenmalig de Najaarsstudiedag gaat heten.
De najaarsstudiedag zal plaatsvinden op vrijdag 31 oktober aan de Universiteit Utrecht, met als thema Taal en Onderwijs.

Call for papers
Taal en Onderwijs is een breed thema waarbinnen onderzoek valt naar alle vormen en facetten van taalleren in een onderwijssetting. Het kan gaan over zowel moedertaalonderwijs als tweede- en vreemdetaalonderwijs binnen elke onderwijscontext en voor iedere doelgroep; van voor- en vroegschoolse educatie tot volwassenenonderwijs, van regulier- tot speciaal onderwijs, van klassikaal- tot afstandsonderwijs. Het gepresenteerde onderzoek kan zich richten op het leerrendement van bepaalde didactieken, methodieken of curricula, maar ook op de motivatie of perceptie van taalleerders of op de tevredenheid van docenten. Ook onderwerpen als taalonderwijsbeleid, taalgericht vakonderwijs, ict-ondersteund taalonderwijs en taaltoetsing vallen binnen het thema.

Dit brede spectrum van onderzoek naar taal en onderwijs willen wij graag aan bod laten komen op de Najaarsstudiedag 2014. Wij nodigen iedereen die geļnteresseerd is uit om een bijdrage aan deze Najaarsstudiedag te leveren in de vorm van een presentatie (30 minuten, waarvan 10 minuten discussie). U kunt uw abstract (max. 400 woorden) indienen door het 'abstract-indienformulier' op de Anéla-website in te vullen.

Aankondiging en oproep voor lezingen

De Fryske Akademy organiseert dit jaar voor de twintigste keer het Frysk Filologekongres (Fries Filologencongres), in Leeuwarden op woensdag 10, donderdag 11 en vrijdag 12 december. Het congres wil een podium zijn voor het wetenschappelijk debat met betrekking tot de frisistiek in de breedste zin. De voertalen zijn: Fries, Nederlands, Engels en Duits.

De opzet van het congres is dat er elke dag wordt begonnen met een plenaire lezing. Hierna zijn er parallelsessies. Op de donderdag is er een avondsessie over Onderwijs. Het congres richt zich op de volgende onderzoeksgebieden:

1. Oudfries
2. Taalkunde
3. Letterkunde
4. Lexicographie
5. Taalsociologie
6. Geschiedenis van Fryslān/Cultuurstudie.

Het onderzoeksveld is het Fries, met inbegrip van de dialecten die in Fryslān voorkomen, in alle fasen en het Fries in Duitsland (Noord- en Oost-Friesland). Lezingen die vanuit een vergelijkend perspectief relevant zijn, zijn ook van harte welkom.

De congrescommissie roept hierbij deskundigen op om een opzet (van zo’n 300 woorden) voor een lezing op een van de onderzoeksgebieden in te dienen. Sprekers die hun lezing bij een bepaald onderzoeksgebied ingedeeld willen zien, wordt gevraagd dit aan te geven. Een lezing duurt een halfuur (20 minuten voor de lezing zelf plus 10 minuten voor discussie). Uit het aanbod van lezingen zal na de sluitingstermijn (zie hieronder) een keuze worden gemaakt voor het congres. De lezinghouders kunnen hun lezing aanbieden voor publicatie in de congresbundel Philologia Frisica anno 2014, die onder redactie van de congrescommissie zal staan.

De sluitingstermijn voor het inzenden van een opzet is 15 september. Voor 1 oktober horen inzenders of hun opzet voor een lezing is aangenomen.

De locatie van het congres is op dit moment nog niet bekend en zal zo spoedig mogelijk bekend worden gemaakt. De congreskosten zijn € 100,- voor het hele congres of € 40,- voor een congresdag (incl. congresdocumentatie, koffie/thee en lunch). Lezinghouders zijn vrij van congreskosten voor de dag dat ze hun lezing houden. Studenten hebben gratis toegang tot het congres. Op woensdag 10 december is er een congresdiner; de kosten hiervan zijn € 30,-.

20th Frisian Philologists’ Conference

Announcement and Call for Papers

The Fryske Akademy (Frisian Academy) organizes the 20th Frysk Filologekongres (Frisian Philologists’ Conference), in Leeuwarden, on December 10 to 12. The conference provides a forum for scientific debate concerning Frisian Studies in the broadest sense. The working languages will be Frisian, Dutch, English, and German.

Each day will start with a plenary session, followed by parallel sessions. An evening session on Education will take place at Thursday. The following research areas will be focused on:

1. Old Frisian
2. Linguistics
3. Literature
4. Lexicography
5. Linguistic sociology
6. History of Friesland/Cultural studies.

The field of research is Frisian, including the dialects of Friesland, in all its phases and Frisian in Germany (North and East Friesland). Papers offering a relevant comparative perspective are also warmly welcomed.

The conference committee invites interested parties to submit proposals for presentations during the parallel sessions by sending in an abstract (of roughly 300 words in length). Lecturers who want to have their lecture placed in a specific research area should mention this at submission. Each presentation will last thirty minutes (20 minutes for the lecture itself followed by 10 minutes for discussion). After the deadline (see below) a choice will be made from the proposals received. Lecturers can offer their paper for the conference proceedings, Philologia Frisica anno 2014, which will be edited by the conference committee.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is 15 September. You’ll be notified before October 1st whether your abstract is accepted.

The conference location is not sure yet and will be made known as soon as possible. The conference fee is Euros 100 to cover the entire conference, or Euros 40 per day (including conference documentation, coffee/tea, and lunch). Conference costs will be waived for participants on the day they present their paper. Students will be admitted free of charge. A conference dinner (Costs: Euros 30) will be held on Wednesday 10th.

Anmeldung und Aufforderung, Vorträge einzureichen

Die Fryske Akademy (Friesischer Akademie) organisiert zum 20. Mal den Fryske Filologekongres (Friesischen Philologenkongress) in Ljouwert/Leeuwarden am Mittwoch, dem 10., Donnerstag, dem 11. und Freitag, dem 12. Dezember. Der Fryske Filologekongres möchte ein Podium für die wissenschaftliche Diskussion über die Frisistik im weitesten Sinne bilden. Die Kongresssprachen sind Friesisch, Niederländisch, Englisch und Deutsch.

Die Gestaltung des Kongresses sieht folgendermaßen aus: Jeder Tag beginnt mit einem Vortrag im Plenum. Anschließend finden mehrere Parallelsitzungen statt. Am Donnerstag wird eine Abendsitzung zum Friesischen im Unterricht abgehalten. Der Kongress widmet sich folgenden Forschungsgebieten:

2. Sprachwissenschaft
3. Literatur
4. Lexikographie
5. Sprachsoziologie
6. Geschichte von Friesland/Friesische Kulturgeschichte

Forschungsgegenstand ist die friesische Sprache und dementsprechend alle in Westfriesland vorkommende (friesische) Dialekte sowie auch das Friesische in Deutschland (Nord- und Ostfriesland). Selbstverständlich sind auch Vorträge, die eine vergleichende Perspektive einnehmen, herzlich willkommen.

Die Kongresskommission wendet sich mit dieser Ankündigung an FachwissenschaftlerInnen/Sachkundige und bittet InteressentInnen, einen Vortragsentwurf von etwa 300 Wörtern einzureichen. ReferentInnen, die wünschen, dass ihr Vortag einem bestimmten Forschungsgebiet zugeordnet wird, werden gebeten, dies anzugeben. Ein Vortrag dauert eine halbe Stunde (zwanzigminutiger Vortrag mit zehnminutiger Diskussion im Anschluss). Aus den eingesandten Entwürfen wird nach Einsendeschluss (siehe unten) eine Auswahl für den Kongress getroffen. Die Vortragenden können ihren Vortrag zur Veröffentlichung im Kongressband Philologia Frisica anno 2014 anbieten, der von der Kongresskommission herausgegeben wird.

Einreichen können Sie Ihren Vortragsentwurf bei: jspoelstra(removeme)fryske-akademy.nl.

Einsendeschluss ist der 15. September. Sie bekommen vor dem 1. Oktober Bescheid, ob ihren Vortragsentwurf angenommen ist.

Der Veranstaltungsort steht zurzeit noch nicht fest, wird jedoch so schnell wie möglich bekanntgegeben. Die Kosten betragen € 100,-- für den gesamten Kongress oder € 40,-- für einen Tag (inkl. Kongressdokumentation, Kaffee/Tee und Lunch). Vortragende sind von den Kongresskosten am Tag ihres Vortrages freigestellt. Von Studierenden wird kein finanzieller Beitrag verlangt. A Germanic Sandwich 2015

Call for Papers
A Germanic Sandwich 2015 will be the fifth in a series of conferences in which Dutch is compared with its closest Germanic neighbours, English and German. The first edition took place in Berlin in 2005 to commemorate the appearance of Nederlands tussen Duits en Engels (‘Dutch between German and English’), a study by the renowned Dutch linguist C.B. van Haeringen. Subsequent editions were held in Sheffield (2008), Oldenburg (2010) and Leuven (2013). This two-day conference will take place on 24 and 25 April 2015 at the University of Nottingham (UK Campus).

We invite abstracts for talks of 20 minutes (+ 10 minutes’ discussion), in which Dutch is compared to German and/or English (other Germanic languages may of course be included as well). We welcome studies with a typological and/or comparative perspective, dealing with questions about structural aspects of the languages, their history or their status. Studies from a language acquisition or psycholinguistic perspective are also welcome.

Abstracts of c. 500 words can be sent to alan.scott(removeme)nottingham.ac.uk. The conference languages are Dutch, English and German. The deadline for submission is 3 November 2014; notification of acceptance will take place during January 2015.

STUDIEPRIJZEN 2014 Stichting Praemium Erasmianum

De Stichting Praemium Erasmianum reikt dit jaar voor de zesentwintigste keer haar Studieprijzen uit. Vijf Studieprijzen worden toegekend aan jonge onderzoekers in de geesteswetenschappen en sociale wetenschappen die een dissertatie van bijzonder hoge kwaliteit hebben verdedigd aan een Nederlandse universiteit. De prijs bestaat uit een bedrag van € 3.000.

De vijf winnende proefschriften van dit jaar zijn:

Belangrijk criterium voor de bekroning van een proefschrift is de casusoverstijgende behandeling van het onderwerp en het bredere belang van het boek voor andere disciplines. De selectiecommissie bestond uit Maxim Drenth, Naomi Ellemers, Rick Lawson, Paul Schnabel en Max Sparreboom.

De Studieprijzen 2014 worden uitgereikt door Martijn Sanders, voorzitter van de Stichting. De prijsuitreiking zal plaatsvinden op maandag 12 mei 2014 om 16.00 uur in de Koninklijke Akademie van Wetenschappen (Kloveniersburgwal 29, Amsterdam). Belangstellenden voor de prijsuitreiking zijn van harte welkom en kunnen zich aanmelden via de website van de KNAW.

De Stichting Praemium Erasmianum is in 1958 opgericht door ZKH Prins Bernhard der Nederlanden. De Stichting kent jaarlijks de Erasmusprijs en vijf Studieprijzen toe. Zijne Majesteit de Koning is Regent van de Stichting.
