Mental simulation during narrative comprehension: Insights from neuroimaging.

Abstract: A debated issue in language understanding is whether language is understood via sensori-motor simulation of its semantic content. The available evidence is mixed, and it is fair to say that we have little understanding of how and when simulation plays a role in language understanding.

I will present the results of some recent neuroimaging studies in which we studied mental simulation in the context of narratives. Issues of interest are individual differences in mental simulation during story comprehension, and how mental simulation is driven by literary techniques such as narrative perspective.

Our neuroimgaging work using narratives is in contrast to earlier work in which we used single, isolated verbs to probe simulation, and I will argue that the study of language will benefit from complementing what we know from experiments with de-contextualized stimuli, with findings obtained with richer stimuli such as narratives.

Bio: Roel Willems is a senior researcher at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour and at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, Nijmegen, the Netherlands. He obtained his Ph. D. from Radboud University Nijmegen, on the neural integration of information from speech and gestures. He previously held positions at the Radboud University Nijmegen and the University of California, Berkeley, USA, during which he investigated the role of the motor cortex in language understanding. He investigates the neural basis of our language capacities, and his current main interest is the role of mental simulation in the comprehension of literature.

Keynote speaker is Jeffrey T. Schnapp, who will examine new models of how scholarly knowledge is being produced and shaped in the arts and humanities today, with particular attention devoted to emerging
genres and conventions, to the re-imagining and redesigning of scholarly books, and to ongoing experiments with print-plus and post-print approaches to publishing. The seminar is focused on discussion and
dialogue between lecturer, researchers, and students. A number of ongoing research projects, of interest within the context of the issues raised by Schnapp, will be presented during the seminar.

Schnapp is Professor of Romance Languages & Literature, teaches on the faculty in the Department of

On Friday 2 June, LUCL hosts a workshop on Raddoppiamento Fonosintattico. This workshop aims at discussing the syntactic, morphological and phonological conditions of occurrence of Raddoppiamento Fonosintattico. Different analyses for the phenomenon will be presented (phonological, historical, syntactic, morpho-phonological, etc) and different solutions will be discussed during a round table which will follow the presentations of different points of view by leading experts of this phenomenon. Raddoppiamento Fonosintattico?

Raddoppiamento Fonosintattico, or Rafforzamento Fonosintattico (RF) is an external sandhi phenomenon that is found in most central and southern Italian varieties as well as in Standard Italian, whereby the initial consonant of a word geminates, depending on the properties of the preceding word and/or the syntactic relationship between them.

There is a significant body of literature, both descriptive and analytical, that addresses RF. The phenomenon is best known in its Tuscan version, where stress is an important conditioning factor. The conditions under which RF in other Italian varieties applies are however not completely understood.

This workshop aims at discussing the syntactic, morphological and phonological conditions of occurrence of RF. The workshop will be held in the Lipsius building. This is the main building of the Faculty of Humanities of Leiden University. All lectures will be held in room 147, which is located on the first floor.

Travelling to Leiden

Leiden is a relatively small city in the west of The Netherlands, between the capital Amsterdam and The Hague, the Dutch seat of Government. For international visitors, it is easily reached by air, railway and road.

Arrival by plane
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is the main international airport of the Netherlands, and a major air hub in Europe. To and from Leiden, the train is the easiest way of travelling to the airport, which takes approximately 15 minutes. Trains leave in both directions every fifteen minutes between 6 am and midnight, and about every hour at night. You can easily plan your train journey by checking the schedule online.

Arrival by train
Leiden can be reached on international trains via major cities in its proximity such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. These cities are services by two high speed train connections: to the south to Brussels and Paris (also connecting to London) and to the East to Koln and Frankfurt, as well as regular speed international train connections to most other major cities in Europe. You can find train schedules online.

Arrival by car
Leiden is located between the A4 and A44 motorways. Although the small city centre is a pedestrian-only area, visitors will find parking facilities just outside this are, and all venues will be within walking distance.

The Nijmegen Gesture Centre (NGC) is organising a workshop entitled:
'Communicative intention in gesture and action' which will take place on June 4-5, 2014 at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen

Communication in humans is a complex and flexible behavior. In order to be successful in communication, people use not only speech but also gestures and, more broadly, communicative actions. The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers from different disciplines - psychology, linguistics, neurosciences and evolutionary psychology - to discuss together how humans and non-human primates shape their bodily actions when they are meant to fulfill a communicative intention. A dialogue among researchers working with different techniques and different types of communicative actions will cast new light on the definition of action and gesture, marking a further step in our understanding of human communication.

On Friday June 13th, the Leiden University Center for Linguistics (LUCL) will host the very first edition of Romaanse Taalkunde in Nederland (RomTiN). RomTiN is a small workshop at which junior researcher in Romance linguistics will present their research in an informal setting to other junior researchers as well as to more senior researchers.

During RomTiN, six MA & PhD-students from four different universities will present their research into different aspects of the Romance languages. We are also pleased to announce that professor Haike Jacobs (Radboud University) will present some of his current research in phonological theory.
For MA-students and PhD-students, RomTiN is an excellent chance to interact with their peers from different universities, as well as with senior researchers. For senior researchers, RomTiN is a great opportunity to get to know junior researchers from other universities and their work, as well as to meet colleagues from other universities.

NASSLLI 2014 at University Maryland, USA, June 23-27 2014
The 6th North American Summer School in Logic, Language and Information (NASSLLI 2014), a bi-annual summer school loosely modeled on the long-running ESSLLI series in Europe, will be held at the University of Maryland, College Park, June 23 - 27, 2014. In addition, we will run three intensive introductory courses ("bootcamps") on Saturday and Sunday, June 21-22. Additional events will be held during the weekend following the summer school, June 28-29.

The summer school will consist of 18 courses, scheduled in five parallel sessions throughout the week. Courses will meet for 90 minutes on each of five days. The instructors are prominent researchers who volunteer their time and energy to present work in their disciplines. NASSLLI courses are aimed at graduate students and advanced undergraduates in any of the fields represented at the summer school, but will also be of interest to post-docs and researchers in those fields. Courses are designed with an interdisciplinary audience in mind, by instructors who enjoy addressing students and colleagues from a wide range of disciplines.

We are working to keep the registration fee low for NASSLLI participants. The expected registration fee is $175.00 for students and academics, $50.00 for UMD affiliates and $400 professional rate. The exact costs and online registration will be available on the NASSLLI website in mid-March.


NASSLL is located on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park. The University of Maryland is located in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, and is accessible by Metro from downtown Washington DC.


All NASSLLI participants are responsible for securing their own accommodations during their stay in College Park. However, NASSLLI participants may request accommodation in the South Campus Residence Hall on the University of Maryland, College Park campus. The summer school course in language description and linguistic fieldwork will give you a broad introduction to the practical and methodological aspects of fieldwork, and the art of language description. It will also provide insight in the structures of two unfamiliar languages. The course consists of two parts: a structural course of a non-familiar language (Plains Cree , Algonquian, Amerindian, Canada) and fieldwork workshops with a speaker of an underdescribed language.

The RefNet Summer School on Psychological and Computational Models of
Language will run from 24-30 Aug, Edinburgh, UK.

One reason why language is such a powerful tool for building social and
cognitive capacities is that it allows us to refer, that is, to
identify entities ? objects, processes, or ideas. Unsurprisingly,
several academic disciplines attempt to model our ability to refer.
Surprisingly, those disciplines do not often work together. RefNet is
an EPSRC research network whose goal is to promote research on
reference by building a community of researchers who can benefit from
advances across disciplines. This summer?s RefNet Summer School on
Psychological and Computational Models of Language will introduce young
researchers to research techniques from psychology, computing science,
and linguistics, among them eye-tracking, algorithmic models, Bayesian
reasoning, and mixed-effects modelling. While the summer school will
focus on the production of referring expressions, its short courses
provide foundations for interdisciplinary work in many areas.

Call for Papers:

Specific Language Impairment (SLI) is a disorder characterized by slow language development, without other cognitive or neurological deficits. This workshop intends to discuss different topics about the diagnosis and causes of Specific Language Impairment. One of the goals of the workshop is to supply the phonological, lexical, morphosyntactic or pragmatic abilities of children with SLI. A main problem in SLI is to provide a differential diagnosis which can distinguish SLI from other syndromes like autism, receptive language disorder or attention deficit disorder. In fact, so far the criteria to diagnose SLI has been mainly by exclusion. In addition, another topic that it’s going to be included is the causes of SLI: genetic, environmental, linguistic difficulties, cognitive factors, learning disabilities. We also encourage new findings after applying methodologies like event related potentials, fMRI, eye tracking or MEG.
Authors are invited to send one copy of an abstract in English for review. Abstracts must be at most one page long on an A4 or letter-size sheet (8.5'' by 11'') with one-inch margins and typed in at least 12-point font. An optional second page is permitted for data and references. Abstracts must be anonymous.

Project TWIDENTITY zoekt drie masterstudenten

Binnenkort gaat op het Meertens Instituut het door NWO gesubsidieerde project TWIDENTITY van start; de naam is een samentrekking van Twitter en identity. We gaan onderzoek doen naar de vraag in hoeverre er op Twitter sprake is van constructie van lokale en/of sociale identiteiten door taalgebruik.

We zoomen daarbij specifiek in op het gebruik van Limburgs dialect en Fries (in afwisseling met het Standaardnederlands, Engels etc.).

TWIDENTITY is een vervolgonderzoek op het project TINPOT (Taal, Identiteit, Netwerk en Produktgeruchten op Twitter) dat door de KNAW werd gefinancierd. Vanuit dit project is onder andere TweetGenie ontwikkeld ( die op basis van taalgebruik/taalgedrag op Nederlandse twitter-accounts het geslacht en de leeftijd raadt van twitteraars.

In TWIDENTITY willen we om te beginnen een taaldetector bouwen, die tweets in het Fries en Limburgs automatisch kan herkennen. Vervolgens willen we weten:

Zijn er twitteraars die altijd in de eigen streektaal twitteren? Zo ja, wat kan de reden hier van zijn? Zijn dit meer mannen of vrouwen, ouderen of jongeren?
Hoe vanzelfsprekend zijn het twitteren in de streektaal en de constructie van regionale identiteit met elkaar verbonden?
Bij welke twitteraars zien we code switching optreden? Waar kan code switching van afhankelijk zijn? De twitteraar, het publiek, leeftijd, geslacht, het onderwerp, privé mededelingen, of bij een bepaalde emotie?
Zijn er evidente verschillen tussen het twitteren in Fries en in Limburgs?

Het Meertens Instituut zoekt voor de duur van een half jaar drie studenten in hun master fase. Het gaat om twee (socio)linguisten en een programmeur, die bereid zijn van dit onderzoek een afstudeerwerkstuk te maken of er een Engelstalig artikel over te publiceren. Wij zoeken in concreto:

1. Een masterstudent (socio)linguistiek die belangstelling heeft voor Limburgs dialect. De student adviseert de programmeur bij het bouwen van tools, en doet onderzoek naar de constructie van identiteit op Twitter door taalgebruik. De opdracht wordt verstrekt als een betaalde stage voor 6 maanden, 500 euro bruto per maand bij een fulltime aanstelling.

2. Een masterstudent (socio)linguistiek die belangstelling heeft voor het Fries. De Franse ambassade in Nederland en de partnerondernemingen bieden studenten ieder jaar de mogelijkheid een beurs aan te vragen om hun academische opleiding in Frankrijk voort te zetten.

Studenten die minimaal beschikken over een Nederlands bachelordiploma (of dat behalen voor september 2014) en in Frankrijk een master willen volgen of een doctoraat willen beginnen. Iedere discipline komt in aanmerking (geologie, geesteswetenschappen, economische en sociale wetenschappen, kunst, recht, biologie, wiskunde, scheikunde, informatica, politicologie…).

De hoogte van de toegekende beurs ligt tussen €615 en €770, afhankelijk van het studieniveau, en voor een duur van maximaal tien maanden. De status van beursstudent biedt eveneens dekking van kosten voor de sociale verzekering en vergoeding van het collegegeld in geval van een studie aan een universiteit.

De selectie van de kandidaten geschiedt in eerste instantie op basis van het dossier, vervolgens tijdens een gesprek. De voornaamste selectiecriteria zijn een uitmuntend studieverloop, de motivering om in Frankrijk te gaan studeren, en de persoonlijke eigenschappen van de student. Kennis van de Franse taal is geen vereiste.

Het AIO-project maakt deel uit van het project “Advancing The European Multilingual Experience (AThEME).” Dit is een groot Europees onderzoeksproject op het gebied van meertaligheid, waarin samengewerkt wordt tussen 17 Europese universiteiten. Het AThEME-project bestudeert meertaligheid vanuit een taalkundig, cognitief en sociologisch perspectief. Het AIO-project valt onder een van de 6 Work Packages van AThEME, namelijk “Regional languages in multilingual Europe: Linguistic resources in need of resourceful policies”. Onderzoek binnen dit Work Package richt zich onder meer op structuur en aard van taaldiversiteit en op de effecten van meertaligheid op de grammatica van regionale variėteiten (dialecten) en minderheidstalen.

De werkzaamheden van het AIO-project omvatten de volgende activiteiten:
• Het uitvoeren van syntactisch onderzoek naar microvariatie waarin Nederlandse dialecten en het Fries centraal staan. The Meertens Institute in Amsterdam has an opening position for a PhD candidate working on the theoretical modeling of (partial) grammars and their visualization on geographical maps.

Background This PhD project is part of the project Maps and Grammar ( Maps and Grammar investigates the relation between the geographic distribution of linguistic variables (i.e. syntactic, phonological and morphological properties) and their organization in mental grammars. One of the central questions is if and how we can put (partial) grammars on geographic maps, instead of individual linguistic variables. Maps and Grammar includes the postdoc project Computing regions (quantitative analysis and visualization of complex linguistic variation data), the PhD project Inclusion Relations (implicational chains between linguistic variables), the PhD project Transition Zones (theoretical modeling of grammars in dialectal transition zones) and the PhD project advertised here, Grammaticometrics (modeling and visualization of (partial) dialect grammars). The other positions are already filled.

Maps and Grammar is funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) for the period 2013-2018. The research is carried out at the Meertens Institute in cooperation with Leiden University and the University of Groningen. The PhD student for the project Grammaticometrics will participate in the Netherlands National Graduate School of Linguistics (LOT).

Job function information The project will start out from a part of grammar which shows a lot of dialect variation, to be chosen in consultation with the other researchers in the group; examples are the pronominal systems or the sound systems of Dutch dialects. Data will be taken from syntactic, morphological and phonological databases. (There is no absolute requirement that the work is done on the basis of Dutch; dialect variation in other languages can also be studied, provided there are enough data available in electronic form.) The PhD student should model this fragment as a formal system (of rules, constraints or constructions), and visualize the developed partial grammars on geographic maps. The key question is whether the maps which are built in this way, based on more ‘abstract’ principles are significantly different from traditional maps that are typically based on more ‘superficial’ data, such as different words. The answer to this question will be central in the dissertation. Another question to be answered is how the differences between partial grammars can be measured.

The Institute for Language and Communication (IL&C) and the Psychological Sciences Research Institute (IPSY) at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL; Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium), in collaboration with the research group on Multilingualism (Pluri-LL) of the University of Namur (Belgium), are seeking four highly motivated PhD candidates within the framework of the research project “Assessing Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL): Linguistic, cognitive and educational perspectives”.

The central aim of the research project is to investigate CLIL education in French-speaking Belgium from a multidisciplinary perspective. CLIL is a didactic method, comparable to immersion education, in which school subjects are taught in a different target language than the mainstream school language. The project will focus on primary and secondary school CLIL education in Dutch and English and examine by which cognitive (memory, attention,…) and socio-affective (motivational, attitudinal,…) factors the potential linguistic differences (with respect to pronunciation, lexis and grammar) between pupils in CLIL education and their pairs in non-CLIL school environments, can be accounted for. The methodological approach will combine corpus-based longitudinal and cross-sectional analyses, together with experimental research designs.

Each selected candidate will be engaged in a 4-year full-time PhD project (2-year renewable contract), with focus on one (or more) of the following research lines:
- Linguistic research goals:
• Examine the relationship between the learning environment and the acquisition of spoken skills and oral proficiency in Dutch and English (i.e. the perception and production of target language vowels and/or word stress) by using qualitative classroom observations, spontaneous speech production and quantitative experimental methods.
• Analyze relationship between the learning environment and the acquisition of lexical and grammatical proficiency in Dutch and English, by using both corpus-based and experimental methods. Focus will be on:
- overall phraseology
- specific lexico-grammatical constructions (i.e. expression of intensification).
- Cognitive research goals:
• Analyze the cognitive demands of CLIL, by experimental research designs
• Gain understanding of how bilingual education affects overall cognitive functioning (with a focus on executive control) in CLIL learners and increase scientific knowledge about the cognitive basis of bilingualism in general
• Investigate how the cognitive profile of CLIL learners relates to their linguistic profile and how this relation is moderated by individual socio-affective variables and learning environment
- Socio-affective research goals:
Explore the dynamic relationships between the socio-affective variables (social interactions in the classroom, background, motivation, attitudes) on the one hand, and language acquisition and cognitive functioning on the other hand.
The candidates will obtain a PhD degree in linguistics or psychology, depending on the area of research. Each PhD candidate will work on the joined supervision of some of the promoters of the project, depending on the PhD topic addressed. In addition, a postdoctoral researcher will be involved in the daily supervision of the projects.
- Master in linguistics or modern languages, with honours, for the PhDs in the linguistic / socio-affective domains
- Master in psychology / psycholinguistics / logopaedics / educational sciences, with honours, for the PhDs in the cognitive / socio-affective domains
- For the PhDs in the linguistic domains, native or near-native proficiency in French, English and/or Dutch is required;

Geographical linguistics (or dialectology) has a long tradition:
languages and dialects have been put on maps, and those maps have been studied since the mid of the 19th Century. However, recent decades have seen a rapid increase in insights into linguistic structure as well as in geographic technology, and those two have not always been completely matched to each other, so that one might feel that current linguistic maps leave things to be desired for on both ends.

Many questions arise. For instance, how can regions be identified from mapped data? What are good methods to map linguistic properties? Is it possible to map grammatical (sub)systems instead of individual grammatical features and if so how? How can geographic information systems (GIS) best be applied to linguistic data? What can linguistic mapping learn from mapping techniques used in other fields of science? How can we deal with data noise and data sparsity?

This workshop aims to bring together researchers with a background in linguistics and researchers with a background in mapping. We invite the submission of abstracts on the relation between linguistics and geographical maps, including but not limited to:

* development and storage of linguistic data with geographic features
* the use of geographical data in linguistic argumentation
* visualization of linguistic data on geographic maps
* identifying regions in mapped data from any field of science

Proposals for courses and workshops at ESSLLI'2015 are invited in all areas of Logic, Linguistics and Computing Sciences.
Cross-disciplinary and innovative topics are particularly encouraged.

Each course and workshop will consist of five 90 minute sessions, offered daily (Monday-Friday) in a single week. Proposals for two-week courses should be structured and submitted as two independent one-week courses, e.g. as an introductory course followed by an advanced one.
In such cases, the ESSLLI programme committee reserves the right to accept just one of the two proposals.

All instructional and organizational work at ESSLLI is performed completely on a voluntary basis, so as to keep participation fees to a minimum. However, organizers and instructors have their registration fees waved, and are reimbursed for travel and accommodation expenses up to a level to be determined and communicated with the proposal notification. ESSLLI can only guarantee reimbursement for at most one course/workshop organizer, and can not guarantee full reimbursement of travel costs for lecturers or organizers from outside of Europe. The ESSLLI organizers would appreciate any help in controlling the School's expenses by seeking complete coverage of travel and accommodation expenses from other sources.


Each proposal should fall under one of the following categories.

Such courses are designed to present the basics of a research area, to people with no prior knowledge in that area. They should be of elementary level, without prerequisites in the course's topic, though possibly assuming a level of general scientific maturity in the relevant discipline. They should enable researchers from related disciplines to develop a level of comfort with the fundamental concepts and techniques of the course's topic, thereby contributing to the interdisciplinary nature of our research community.

Introductory courses are central to ESSLLI's mission. They are intended to introduce a research field to students, young researchers, and other non-specialists, and to foster a sound understanding of its basic methods and techniques. Such courses should enable researchers from related disciplines to develop some comfort and competence in the topic considered. Introductory courses in a cross-disciplinary area may presuppose general knowledge of the related disciplines.

Advanced courses are targeted primarily to graduate students who wish to acquire a level of comfort and understanding in the current research of a field.

Workshops focus on specialized topics, usually of current interest.
Workshops organizers are responsible for soliciting papers and selecting the workshop programme. They are also responsible for publishing proceedings if they decide to have proceedings.


Course and workshop proposals should follow closely the following guidelines to ensure full consideration.

Each course may have no more than two instructors, and each workshop no more than two organizers. All instructors and organizers must possess a PhD or equivalent degree by the submission deadline.

Course proposals should mention explicitly the intended course category. Proposals for introductory courses should indicate the intended level, for example as it relates to standard textbooks and monographs in the area. Proposals for advanced courses should specify the prerequisites in detail.

Call for Papers Fourth Central European Conference in Linguistics for Graduate Students (CECIL’S 4), Poland, August 20-21 2014, deadline: June 15 2014
It is a great pleasure to announce the Fourth Central European Conference in Linguistics for Graduate Students (CECIL’S 4). For the first time, the conference will be held outside Hungary — in Poland. It is organized by the Institute of English of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. CECIL’S 4 will take place on August 20-21, 2014 in the Institute of East-Central Europe in Lublin, Poland.

The two-day conference aims to bring together postgraduate students in linguistics from a wide range of research areas, providing an interdisciplinary forum for students to present and discuss their work in an intellectually stimulating and informal setting.
We invite PhD and MA students for abstract submissions in any field of theoretical linguistics, especially on topics in syntax, morphology, phonology (including prosody), formal semantics and pragmatics (including information structure), as well as their interfaces with phonetics, language acquisition, and psycholinguistics. Both theoretical and experimental papers are solicited, and synchronic and diachronic approaches are equally welcome. The conference will include both oral and poster sessions. Each talk will be given 35 minutes, including 10 minutes for discussion. The language of the conference is English.

Van Goghprogramme - call for applications for a travel grant for 2014-2015, deadline: June 15 2014

Nederlandse en Franse onderzoekers die een samenwerkingsverband willen beginnen of voortzetten kunnen nu een reisbeurs aanvragen voor de periode 2014-2015. De beurzen worden verstrekt vanuit het Van Goghprogramma:

Het programma
Doel van het Van Goghprogramma is om de uitwisseling van Nederlandse en Franse onderzoekers binnen één onderzoeksproject te stimuleren en te ondersteunen om zo nieuwe en duurzame samenwerkingsverbanden te creėren.

De doelgroep
Het programma richt zich op excellente onderzoekers die zijn verbonden aan Nederlandse onderzoeks- en kennisinstellingen die samenwerken met Franse onderzoekers of dit ambiėren. Een voorwaarde is dat de Franse onderzoekers ook een reisbeurs krijgen van het Franse Van Goghprogramma voor een bezoek aan hun Nederlandse collega's.

De beurs
De beurzen zijn uitsluitend bedoeld voor reis- en verblijfskosten en bedragen tussen €1.500 en €4.000 per onderzoeksteam. De maximale duur van de samenwerking is twee jaar. Na het eerste jaar kan een vervolgaanvraag worden ingediend voor een tweede jaar.

De deadlines
Voor het Van Goghprogramma gelden de volgende deadlines:
• Indienen nieuwe aanvragen: 15 juni 2014
• Indienen vervolgaanvragen: 1 september 2014
• Toekenning beurzen: december 2014
• Start van projecten: januari 2015

De toekenning
Inhoudelijke experts beoordelen de voorstellen die door Nederlandse aanvragers zijn ingediend. Franse inhoudelijke experts beoordelen de Franse voorstellen. Beursaanvragen komen enkel in aanmerking als de voorstellen van beide zijden positief zijn beoordeeld.

Elk jaar dat er geen Anéla-conferentie wordt gehouden, organiseert Anéla de Voorjaarsstudiedag, een ééndags congres waarbij leden en geļnteresseerde niet-leden van Anéla samenkomen en hun werk presenteren rondom een specifiek thema. Dit jaar vindt de Voorjaarsstudiedag niet in het voorjaar maar in het najaar plaats. Vandaar dus ook dat de Voorjaarsstudiedag dit jaar eenmalig de Najaarsstudiedag gaat heten.
De najaarsstudiedag zal plaatsvinden op vrijdag 31 oktober aan de Universiteit Utrecht, met als thema Taal en Onderwijs.

Call for papers
Taal en Onderwijs is een breed thema waarbinnen onderzoek valt naar alle vormen en facetten van taalleren in een onderwijssetting. Het kan gaan over zowel moedertaalonderwijs als tweede- en vreemdetaalonderwijs binnen elke onderwijscontext en voor iedere doelgroep; van voor- en vroegschoolse educatie tot volwassenenonderwijs, van regulier- tot speciaal onderwijs, van klassikaal- tot afstandsonderwijs. Het gepresenteerde onderzoek kan zich richten op het leerrendement van bepaalde didactieken, methodieken of curricula, maar ook op de motivatie of perceptie van taalleerders of op de tevredenheid van docenten. Ook onderwerpen als taalonderwijsbeleid, taalgericht vakonderwijs, ict-ondersteund taalonderwijs en taaltoetsing vallen binnen het thema.

Dit brede spectrum van onderzoek naar taal en onderwijs willen wij graag aan bod laten komen op de Najaarsstudiedag 2014. Wij nodigen iedereen die geļnteresseerd is uit om een bijdrage aan deze Najaarsstudiedag te leveren in de vorm van een presentatie (30 minuten, waarvan 10 minuten discussie). U kunt uw abstract (max. 400 woorden) indienen door het 'abstract-indienformulier' op de Anéla-website in te vullen.

Aankondiging en oproep voor lezingen

De Fryske Akademy organiseert dit jaar voor de twintigste keer het Frysk Filologekongres (Fries Filologencongres), in Leeuwarden op woensdag 10, donderdag 11 en vrijdag 12 december. Het congres wil een podium zijn voor het wetenschappelijk debat met betrekking tot de frisistiek in de breedste zin. De voertalen zijn: Fries, Nederlands, Engels en Duits.

De opzet van het congres is dat er elke dag wordt begonnen met een plenaire lezing. Hierna zijn er parallelsessies. Op de donderdag is er een avondsessie over Onderwijs. Het congres richt zich op de volgende onderzoeksgebieden:

1. Oudfries
2. Taalkunde
3. Letterkunde
4. Lexicographie
5. Taalsociologie
6. Geschiedenis van Fryslān/Cultuurstudie.

Het onderzoeksveld is het Fries, met inbegrip van de dialecten die in Fryslān voorkomen, in alle fasen en het Fries in Duitsland (Noord- en Oost-Friesland). Lezingen die vanuit een vergelijkend perspectief relevant zijn, zijn ook van harte welkom.

De congrescommissie roept hierbij deskundigen op om een opzet (van zo’n 300 woorden) voor een lezing op een van de onderzoeksgebieden in te dienen. Sprekers die hun lezing bij een bepaald onderzoeksgebied ingedeeld willen zien, wordt gevraagd dit aan te geven. Een lezing duurt een halfuur (20 minuten voor de lezing zelf plus 10 minuten voor discussie). Uit het aanbod van lezingen zal na de sluitingstermijn (zie hieronder) een keuze worden gemaakt voor het congres. De lezinghouders kunnen hun lezing aanbieden voor publicatie in de congresbundel Philologia Frisica anno 2014, die onder redactie van de congrescommissie zal staan.

De sluitingstermijn voor het inzenden van een opzet is 15 september. Voor 1 oktober horen inzenders of hun opzet voor een lezing is aangenomen.

De locatie van het congres is op dit moment nog niet bekend en zal zo spoedig mogelijk bekend worden gemaakt. De congreskosten zijn € 100,- voor het hele congres of € 40,- voor een congresdag (incl. congresdocumentatie, koffie/thee en lunch). Lezinghouders zijn vrij van congreskosten voor de dag dat ze hun lezing houden. Studenten hebben gratis toegang tot het congres. Op woensdag 10 december is er een congresdiner; de kosten hiervan zijn € 30,-.

20th Frisian Philologists’ Conference

Announcement and Call for Papers

The Fryske Akademy (Frisian Academy) organizes the 20th Frysk Filologekongres (Frisian Philologists’ Conference), in Leeuwarden, on December 10 to 12. The conference provides a forum for scientific debate concerning Frisian Studies in the broadest sense. The working languages will be Frisian, Dutch, English, and German.

Each day will start with a plenary session, followed by parallel sessions. An evening session on Education will take place at Thursday. The following research areas will be focused on:

1. Old Frisian
2. Linguistics
3. Literature
4. Lexicography
5. Linguistic sociology
6. History of Friesland/Cultural studies.

The field of research is Frisian, including the dialects of Friesland, in all its phases and Frisian in Germany (North and East Friesland). Papers offering a relevant comparative perspective are also warmly welcomed.

The conference committee invites interested parties to submit proposals for presentations during the parallel sessions by sending in an abstract (of roughly 300 words in length). Lecturers who want to have their lecture placed in a specific research area should mention this at submission. Each presentation will last thirty minutes (20 minutes for the lecture itself followed by 10 minutes for discussion). After the deadline (see below) a choice will be made from the proposals received. Lecturers can offer their paper for the conference proceedings, Philologia Frisica anno 2014, which will be edited by the conference committee.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is 15 September. You’ll be notified before October 1st whether your abstract is accepted.

The conference location is not sure yet and will be made known as soon as possible. The conference fee is Euros 100 to cover the entire conference, or Euros 40 per day (including conference documentation, coffee/tea, and lunch). Conference costs will be waived for participants on the day they present their paper. Students will be admitted free of charge. A conference dinner (Costs: Euros 30) will be held on Wednesday 10th.

Die Fryske Akademy (Friesischer Akademie) organisiert zum 20. Mal den Fryske Filologekongres (Friesischen Philologenkongress) in Ljouwert/Leeuwarden am Mittwoch, dem 10., Donnerstag, dem 11. und Freitag, dem 12. Dezember. Der Fryske Filologekongres möchte ein Podium für die wissenschaftliche Diskussion über die Frisistik im weitesten Sinne bilden. Die Kongresssprachen sind Friesisch, Niederländisch, Englisch und Deutsch.

Die Gestaltung des Kongresses sieht folgendermaßen aus: Jeder Tag beginnt mit einem Vortrag im Plenum. Anschließend finden mehrere Parallelsitzungen statt. Am Donnerstag wird eine Abendsitzung zum Friesischen im Unterricht abgehalten. Der Kongress widmet sich folgenden Forschungsgebieten:

6. Geschichte von Friesland/Friesische Kulturgeschichte

Forschungsgegenstand ist die friesische Sprache und dementsprechend alle in Westfriesland vorkommende (friesische) Dialekte sowie auch das Friesische in Deutschland (Nord- und Ostfriesland). Selbstverständlich sind auch Vorträge, die eine vergleichende Perspektive einnehmen, herzlich willkommen.

Die Kongresskommission wendet sich mit dieser Ankündigung an FachwissenschaftlerInnen/Sachkundige und bittet InteressentInnen, einen Vortragsentwurf von etwa 300 Wörtern einzureichen. ReferentInnen, die wünschen, dass ihr Vortag einem bestimmten Forschungsgebiet zugeordnet wird, werden gebeten, dies anzugeben. Ein Vortrag dauert eine halbe Stunde (zwanzigminutiger Vortrag mit zehnminutiger Diskussion im Anschluss). Aus den eingesandten Entwürfen wird nach Einsendeschluss (siehe unten) eine Auswahl für den Kongress getroffen. Die Vortragenden können ihren Vortrag zur Veröffentlichung im Kongressband Philologia Frisica anno 2014 anbieten, der von der Kongresskommission herausgegeben wird.

Einsendeschluss ist der 15. September. Sie bekommen vor dem 1. Oktober Bescheid, ob ihren Vortragsentwurf angenommen ist.

Der Veranstaltungsort steht zurzeit noch nicht fest, wird jedoch so schnell wie möglich bekanntgegeben. Die Kosten betragen € 100,-- für den gesamten Kongress oder € 40,-- für einen Tag (inkl. Kongressdokumentation, Kaffee/Tee und Lunch). Vortragende sind von den Kongresskosten am Tag ihres Vortrages freigestellt. Von Studierenden wird kein finanzieller Beitrag verlangt. A Germanic Sandwich 2015 will be the fifth in a series of conferences in which Dutch is compared with its closest Germanic neighbours, English and German. The first edition took place in Berlin in 2005 to commemorate the appearance of Nederlands tussen Duits en Engels (‘Dutch between German and English’), a study by the renowned Dutch linguist C.B. van Haeringen. Subsequent editions were held in Sheffield (2008), Oldenburg (2010) and Leuven (2013). This two-day conference will take place on 24 and 25 April 2015 at the University of Nottingham (UK Campus).

We invite abstracts for talks of 20 minutes (+ 10 minutes’ discussion), in which Dutch is compared to German and/or English (other Germanic languages may of course be included as well). We welcome studies with a typological and/or comparative perspective, dealing with questions about structural aspects of the languages, their history or their status. Studies from a language acquisition or psycholinguistic perspective are also welcome.

Abstracts of c. 500 words can be sent to alan.scott(removeme) The conference languages are Dutch, English and German. The deadline for submission is 3 November 2014; notification of acceptance will take place during January 2015.

Op de website Faces of Science krijgen jonge wetenschappers een gezicht. Dertig onderzoekers die met een promotie bezig zijn laten zien wat de dagelijkse praktijk is van het werken in de wetenschap en wat hen motiveert. Hoe ziet je leven er uit als jeer voor kiest om wetenschappelijk onderzoek te gaan doen? We gaan deze faces of science tijdens en vlak na hun promotie volgen, en willen daarmee studenten en leerlingen uit 5 en 6 vwo een realistisch inkijkje geven in het bestaan van een wetenschapper.

Oproep Ammodo KNAW Award, deadline indienen nominaties: 16 juni 2014
Stichting Ammodo en de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (KNAW) nodigen u van harte uit om wetenschappers te nomineren voor de eerste editie van de Ammodo KNAW Award voor ongebonden fundamentele wetenschap.

Met ingang van dit jaar stellen Stichting Ammodo en de KNAW elke twee jaar acht veelbelovende wetenschappers financieel in staat om naar eigen inzicht ongebonden fundamenteel wetenschappelijk onderzoek te verrichten. In het huidige financieringsklimaat zijn de mogelijkheden hiervoor beperkt.

De Ammodo KNAW Award
De Ammodo KNAW Award bestaat uit acht geldbedragen van 300.000 euro en bestrijkt alle vakgebieden: biomedical sciences, humanities, natural sciences en social sciences. Per vakgebied kunnen maximaal twee onderzoekers een Award toegekend krijgen. De laureaat kan dit geldbedrag naar eigen inzicht besteden aan een door de laureaat uitgevoerd of begeleid fundamenteel wetenschappelijk onderzoeksproject.

De Ammodo KNAW Award is bedoeld voor internationaal erkende onderzoekers over de volle breedte van de wetenschap, die verbonden zijn aan een Nederlandse universiteit of onderzoeksinstelling. Kandidaten hebben maximaal vijftien jaar geleden een doctorstitel behaald, en zijn in staat om nieuwe wegen te verkennen in fundamenteel wetenschappelijk onderzoek.

Per vakgebied beoordeelt een adviescommissie bestaande uit vier gerenommeerde hoogleraren de genomineerden in dat betreffende vakgebied.

In januari 2015 maken de besturen van Ammodo en de KNAW de winnaars van de eerste Ammodo KNAW Award bekend.

From Text to Political Positions addresses cross-disciplinary innovation in political text analysis for party positioning. Drawing on political science, computational methods and discourse analysis, it presents a diverse collection of analytical models including pure quantitative and qualitative approaches. By bringing together the prevailing text-analysis methods from each discipline the volume aims to alert researchers to new and exciting possibilities of text analyses across their own disciplinary boundary.

The volume builds on the fact that each of the disciplines has a common interest in extracting information from political texts. The focus on political texts thus facilitates interdisciplinary cross-overs. The volume also includes chapters combining methods as examples of cross-disciplinary endeavours. These chapters present an open discussion of the constraints and (dis)advantages of either quantitative or qualitative methods when evaluating the possibilities of combining analytic tools.
