Juryrapport LOT Populariseringsprijs

De jury, bestaande uit Gerdineke van Silfhout, Vivien Waszink, Filip Devos en Arjan van Hessen heeft in november 2015 alle aanvragen gelezen, bekeken en beoordeeld. Wat opviel, en de uiteindelijke keuze lastig maakte, was de grote variatie aan soort materiaal. Er waren boeken, blogs, lesmethodes en MOOCS. Dit maakte de keuze lastig omdat we nu inzendingen op verschillende manieren met elkaar moesten vergelijken. Uiteindelijk zijn we teruggegaan naar de 14 “eisen” van een populariseringsprijs:
1.Het is geen samenvatting van oud onderzoek
2.Er wordt een ruime groep mensen bereikt, ook met het onderwerp
3.Het medium is toegankelijk voor leken
4.Het is ook leuk voor niet-leken
5.Er is bij voorkeur sprake van een duidelijke onderzoeksvraag
6.De presentatievorm is aantrekkelijk
7.Er is sprake van een koppeling tussen populair en wetenschap: Kun je de diepte in vanuit het werk? Hoe gemakkelijk kom je bij de échte informatie?
8.Het is boeiend
9.Het voorziet in een leemte, is vernieuwend
10.Er is sprake van taalkundige breedheid (fonologie/syntaxis etc.)
11.Het is rijk vormgegeven: er worden verschillende media gebruikt
12.De funfactor is hoog: het is ook gewoon leuk
13.De hoeveelheid informatie is goed
14.Het onderwerp mag specifiek zijn (maar ook algemeen)
Ook hier staan tegenstrijdige, of op z’n minst lastige zaken in. Een boek is bijvoorbeeld een boek en gebruikt alleen papier en geen andere media (punt 11).
Na lang wikken en wegen heeft de jury in november 2015 drie, nogal uiteenlopende inzendingen op de shortlist gezet:

•Een blog: ‘De Taaljournalist’ (: https://taaljournalist.wordpress.com/ ) van Gaston Dorren
•Een MOOC: ‘The Miracles of Human Language: An Introduction to Linguistics’ van Marc van Oostendorp, Marten van der Meulen en Inge Otto
Dit laat onverlet dat andere inzendingen ook van hoog niveau waren maar deze drie sprongen eruit in hun “categorie”.

Motivatie voordrachten
1.Ronny Boogaart, voor zijn in februari verschenen boek 'Een sprinter is een stoptrein zonder wc'.
Dit boek is zonder enige twijfel het meeslependste boek dat een Nederlandse taalkundige het afgelopen jaar schreef voor een breder publiek. Al jaren schrijft Boogaart voor VakTaal, een tijdschrift voor neerlandici, een populairwetenschappelijke column over onderwerpen die te maken hebben met taalgebruik en pragmatiek; deze zijn hier, herzien en herschreven, gebundeld in een bundel die iedereen die het leest meteen overtuigt van het wonder van de menselijke taal.
2.Het blog van Gaston Dorren: https://taaljournalist.wordpress.com/
Gaston weet alles van alle taalkundige onderwerpen, zonder het gestudeerd te hebben, en is een heel ambachtelijk schrijver. Zijn blog won eerder dit jaar ook een of andere internationale prijs, wat wel aangeeft dat hij echt de voorhoede is. De soms korte, soms langere) blogs geven een mooi inzicht in actuele zaken, maakt veel duidelijk en is zeer prettig om te lezen. Een groot en breed publiek dat geïnteresseerd is in “taal” wordt hier uitstekend mee bediend.

We zijn onder de indruk van hoeveel mensen ze hebben weten te bereiken, en hoe goed de cursus in elkaar zat. De online cursus is voor iedereen gratis toegankelijk, er is geen specifieke voorkennis vereist, alle materiaal is in open-access.

Wat betreft de winnaar
Wat de gehele jury erg aansprak in de uiteindelijke winnaar, was de mate van verwondering die als het ware omhoog kringelde uit de inhoud, de aansprekende voorbeelden die werden genoemd, de mooie mix van diepte en breedte waarbij complexe zaken (de diepte) zo ogenschijnlijk eenvoudig werden uitgelegd, dat je eigenlijk niet begreep wat er zo moeilijk aan was. Bovendien was het geheel er leuk om te lezen en kwam er bij de gehele jury dikwijls een glimlach op de lippen.
De steekwoorden die door de 4 jury leden aan de winnaar werden toegekend waren:
-Verwondering!-Thema’s zijn vernieuwend
-Passie voor taal-Aansprekende (bekende) voorbeelden
-Heldere schrijfstijl-Informatief
-Interessant-Grappig/leuk om te lezen
-Goede mix tussen breed/diep-Gedetailleerd
-Complexe materie toegankelijk geschreven-Makkelijke link met vakgebied
-Leuk voor leken en niet-leken-Échte popularisering van wetenschap
-Bevat een onderzoeksvraag
(centrale vraag/centraal thema)

Dit is dan ook de reden dat de jury van de LOT-populariseringsprijs 2015 besloten heeft om een vreselijk ouderwetsch medium, een BOEK, als winnaar aan te wijzen:

Elk jaar leggen een paar duizend immigranten het staatsexamen Nederlands als tweede taal (NT2) af. Uit de uitslagen van ruim 27000 examinanten tussen 1995 en 2004 blijkt dat vrouwen gemiddeld beter zijn in het leren van een tweede taal dan mannen. Nijmeegse onderzoekers zoeken de oorzaak hiervan in genetische aanleg.

De app is ontwikkeld door de NTR en taalwetenschappers uit Amsterdam, Utrecht en Nijmegen. Niet eerder werd de diversiteit van het Nederlands op zo’n grote schaal onderzocht.

Title: Perspective-sensitivity as a type of context-sensitivity (partly based on joint work with Yasutada Sudo and Eric McCready)



Perspective-sensitivity as a type of context-sensitivity




Natural language constantly confronts us with perspective. Not only can perspective dependence be found in spatial expressions (‘left', ‘right', 'in front’ etc.), but also in socio-cultural nouns like ‘foreigner' or ‘alien' and subjective predicates like ‘tasty', ‘interesting'. All these expressions share the feature that their interpretation depends on someone’s perspective – call such a person the perspective center or PC. Intuitively, perspective-sensitivity is a kind of context-¬sensitivity, in that who counts as a PC is largely determined by the context. There are other kinds of context--sensitive items in natural language – for example, indexicals and pronominal anaphora. The main question I will address is whether we can analyse perspective-¬sensitivity as an instance of other known types of context¬-sensitivity. There are indeed non-trivial similarities between perspective-sensitive items and both pronominal anaphora and anaphoric expressions. However, I will argue that there are crucial differences between all three classes, which any theory of perspective-sensitivity has to capture. I will discuss one preliminary version of such theory. New data on the interaction between indexicality and perspective will be presented.

Title: The interpretation of declaratives and interrogatives: How semantics and conventions of use divide labor (joint work with Floris Roelofsen)



Abstract:



This talk presents an account of the semantics and discourse effects of falling and rising declaratives, polar interrogatives, and tag interrogatives in English. One of its major goals is to divide the labor between compositional semantics and conventions of use in a principled way. It argues that falling declaratives and rising polar interrogatives are unmarked sentence types, and as such, the differences in their conventional discourse effects follow from independently motivated semantic differences, combined with a single, default convention of use. As a result, the Fregean 'illocutionary force' operators Assertion and Question become unnecessary. In contrast, rising declaratives and tag interrogatives are marked sentence types whose discourse effects consist of the default effects, which they share with unmarked sentence types, augmented with special effects that are systematically connected to their formal properties. A central feature of the approach is that it maintains a parallelism between unmarked and marked sentence types on the one hand, and default and non-default discourse effects on the other.

Large-scale semantic processing and strong computer assistance of mathematics and science is our inevitable future. New combinations of AI and reasoning methods and tools deployed over large mathematical and scientific corpora will be instrumental to this task. The AITP conference is the forum for discussing how to get there as soon as possible, and the force driving the progress towards that.

The colloquium has the aim to study the social practices and structural features of mining languages in a comparative perspective. Mining languages have a unique social ecology. Factors involved are rapid expansion and migration, the multi-ethnic composition of the workforce, binding to a locality, gender and male bounding, concerns for danger and safety, special technology, job specialization, and life underground as distinct from above ground. Generally, the language underground is not that of the owners of the mines but a lingua franca spoken by a chunk of the workforce. Also, there is always special vocabulary and new words being formed.
Existing work on the socio-cultural effects of globalization has typically focused on the huge contemporary metropolises with their explosive and conspicuous diversities (Wang, Cornips et al. 2014; 26). The mining areas go hand-in-hand with a huge diversity in linguistic resources but, nevertheless, are located in peripheral non-metropolitan areas, and often in border regions such as the Dutch, Belgian and German and borderland. These peripheral areas have remained understudied.
The focus will be on three continents: Europe (the former Oostelijke Mijnstreek, Belgian Limburg and the Ruhr area), Africa and South America.

The afternoon of the second day (26 April) will target in Dutch a broad audience of local laypeople who relate in one way or another to the Belgian, German and Dutch Limburgian coalmines. De middag van de tweede dag in het Auditorium Sociaal Historisch Centrum voor Limburg St. Pieterstraat 7 is bedoeld voor een breed publiek en de lezingen zullen in het Nederlands gehouden worden.

REMAINS OF MINING LANGUAGES AND WORK SONGS IN MINAS GERAIS, BRAZIL

At the end of the 17th century, gold was discovered in a geographical region that subsequently became the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. During the 18th century, 700 tons of gold were produced in the area, i.e. 50% of the global production of gold at that time. Diamonds were also found in the region around 1730. As a consequence of the findings, enslaved Africans were brought en masse to Minas Gerais to work in the mines and to build a road from there to Rio de Janeiro. Africans and their descendants worked mainly in the extraction of gold and diamonds, but they were also used for other types of forced labor, such as domestic work. In the 18th century, António da Costa Peixoto documented a Gbe-based “African language” in Minas Gerais, the Língua Geral de Mina, probably spoken by speakers of varieties of Gbe and their descendants (not necessarily those working in the mines [Castro 2002]). “Mina”, in Língua Geral de Mina, referred to the region in Africa that the Portuguese called Costa da Mina, meaning the Coast of the Mine, or Gold Coast (Law 1989). Peixoto’s findings were published in 1944; however, recent research in the region has not been able to identify remains of this Gbe-based variety (Simões 2014). In 1929, almost two hundred years after Peixoto’s fieldwork, Aires da Mata Machado Filho collected data in two villages where small-scale mining was still practiced: São João da Chapada and Quartel de Indaiá. Machado Filho’s work, published in 1943, focuses on mining communities and includes 65 local songs (among others, mining-work songs) and a glossary. Both Machado Filho (1943) and Simões (2014), who gathered additional data and compared his findings with those of Machado Filho, claim that most of the vocabulary is of Bantu origin. Based on these and other earlier studies, the aim of this presentation is to offer an overview of the history and usage of possible “mining languages” spoken by enslaved Africans who worked in the mines of Minas Gerais during the 18th and 19th centuries. The lexical study aims at verifying etymologies proposed by Machado Filho (1943) and Simões (2014), and focuses on correlations between linguistic and demographic data, as well as on conclusions that may be drawn from the sociocultural context and the social functions of this variety, through the analysis of the distribution of the lexicon in different semantic fields and word classes (cf. Bartens & Baker 2012).

(SOCIO)LINGUISTIC ASPECTS OF CITÉ-DUITS IN EISDEN (LIMBURG-BELGIUM)

In the thirties and forties of the former century, a way of speaking among the children of immigrant coal miners, self-labeled as Cité-Duits, developed in the coal miners’ district of Tuinwijk in the village of Eisden, Belgian Limburg. Whereas cité refers to a miners’ housing district, Duits is the Dutch word for the German language. According to the memories of these children - who are now elderly men in their late seventies and eighties - they started to talk in Cité-Duits to have ‘their own language in the streets’. Having become coal miners themselves, they continued to use this variety throughout their lifetime, i.e. when working underground and in private life. Until the present, it is employed as an in-group language restricted to the cité of Eisden. Since women were excluded from mining work and boys and girls remained separated in social life (e.g. school, church), Cité-Duits is principally confined to male speakers and has probably not been transmitted to subsequent generations.
We will argue that Cité-Duits developed and continues to be employed as a symbolic language for expressing group identity that has not emerged out of communicative necessity (since Flemish (Dutch) and the local dialect were available to communicate). New ways of speaking respond to and symbolize changing social situations and constellations.
The first aim of our talk is to focus on the historical social conditions of the emergence of a new variety in the linguistically isolated multiethnic and multilingual coal mining community in Eisden (the cité). We will detail the changing size and composition of the migrant labor force in order to account for the German elements of Cité-Duits in a Flemish/Dutch dialect language area where very few native speakers of German were around. The second aim is to show that Cité-Duits is a hybrid variety resulting from the combination of elements of German, Dutch and a Limburgian dialect (Maaslands) through focusing and sedimentation. We will discuss the language use of individual speakers by presenting a first phonological and morphosyntactic description including verbal clusters, extraposition and the use of determiners. Consequently, our talk provides information about the route(s) individuals may take to overcome linguistic ‘restrictions’ and about the structural relations between linguistic features and their origin (L2 features, contact features etc.).

CONTEMPORARY URBAN VERNACULARS IN THE BELGIAN LIMBURG MINING AREAS:
FROM MINING LANGUAGE TO URBAN VERNACULAR

This paper focuses on new ways of speaking that have emerged in suburban mining neighborhoods in Belgian Limburg (called cités) where a significant number of speakers have bi- or multilingual backgrounds including different heritage languages (in particular Italian, Turkish, Moroccan) alongside the standard and non-standard Dutch varieties.
In these ethnically and linguistically diverse settings, speakers have developed new variants of Dutch, which linguists and laymen generally call Citétaal (‘citélanguage’), Cités (‘Cité’s language’) or Algemeen cités (‘common cité’s language’). The term cité (‘compound’) refers to the occurrence of this new way of speaking in the former mining neighbourhoods, where it emerged and diffused. Today, Citétaal is associated with informal language use among adolescent speakers. There are, moreover, clear signs that it is spreading among local Flemish youngsters.
In this paper we sketch the emergence and diffusion of this Citélanguage since the Seventies and its evolution to a local vernacular. We will also analyze the use and the role of ‘typical’ Citélanguage features in the broader linguistic repertoire of Belgian Limburgian youngsters, by looking at how (with what frequency and in which contexts) youngsters shift between standard and non-standard varieties (including Citélanguage and the Limburgian regiolect) in their daily interactions.

FANAKALO AS A MINING LANGUAGE, WITH SOME NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Fanakalo (also spelt Fanagalo) is a pidgin that has been in existence for two centuries (for the conference of 2016, exactly 200 years since its first unintended documentation). For the first part of its lifespan it was a relatively simple contact variety that enabled communication between Europeans (missionaries, traders, adventurers, colonists) and indigenous South Africans, especially of Xhosa and Zulu background in the areas of the (then) eastern part of the Cape Colony and Natal. In Natal it stabilised with the arrival of large numbers of indentured Indians developing and working on the plantations. The pidgin rose to prominence when it was selected for use as the lingua franca of the highly multilingual mines that opened up in Kimberley (after the discovery of diamonds in 1867) and Johannesburg (after the discovery of gold in 1886). This paper will examine the properties of Fanakalo as a mining language, in contrast to its uses on farms, suburban households and urban employment. Mine Fanakalo is a planned variety (codified by the mining industry) that arose from farm Fanakalo. It has a special register of technical terms pertaining to the mining industry, and has a higher number of Afrikaans words than the other varieties of Fanakalo and does not give evidence of extensive ‘borrowing’ (subsequent to its codification) or code-switching. While there have been calls in the last few decades to discontinue its use on the mines, on the grounds of its associations with colonial and racial domination, this has not proved feasible. Whereas Fanakalo has been invariably denigrated by intellectuals, as a language of oppression, rather than culture, there have been some surprising recent developments. In the wake of the tragedy at Marikana mines, where over 40 workers on strike were shot and killed by police, Fanakalo has come to prominence as the language preferred by the strikers for mass meetings and negotiations with management. This process offers possibilities of the linguistic elaboration of the pidgin.

LANGUAGE IN THE MINES: THE POTOSÍ SILVER MOUNTAIN

The Cerro Rico (rich mountain) of Potosí in Bolivia was perhaps the most important source of income for the Spanish colonial empire. The city of Potosí was founded around 1540 and by 1610 had become the third largest city in the western hemisphere (after London and Paris, but before Rome and Seville). Thousands of people flocked to the city, by their own free will, as forced colonial indigenous labourers, or as African slaves. My question is: how did all these people communicate, both in the city and in the mines themselves? How can we find out? My argument has three parts.
First, I discuss mining languages in general, and their social ecology. Factors involved in the social ecology of mining languages are rapid expansion and migration, the multi-ethnic composition of the workforce, binding to a locality, gender and male bonding, concerns for danger and safety, special technology, job specialization, and life underground as distinct from above ground. Generally, the language underground is not that of the owners of the mines but a lingua franca spoken by a chunk of the workforce. Also, there is always special vocabulary and new words being formed.
Second, I discuss the history of Potosí and of the languages spoken there, mostly based on a mining ‘dictionary’ written in 1608 for overseers with a Spanish background. It contains many blends involving the Amerindian language Quechua, as well as some words in Aymara (Quechua and Aymara are the two most important Bolivian highland languages). It also contains many observations about language use in the mines and interethnic relations.
Third, I discuss the present day language of the Afro-Bolivian population living on the eastern slopes of the Andes, in an otherwise Aymara-speaking region. Nowadays they are farmers, close to the indigenous communities surrounding them, but their ancestors worked in the mines, after having been captured in the Congo and Angola regions. They speak a creole variety of Spanish, but their language contains many Quechua loan words, which I argue only could have come from the mines.
Based on these three considerations, I will hypothesize that the language of the mines was a blended and adapted form of the Amerindian language Quechua with some Aymara additions, possibly with variants depending on who spoke it.

SWAHILI IN DR CONGO’S MINING REGION KATANGA: AN INTRIGUING CASE OF CONTACT-INDUCED LANGUAGE RESTRUCTURING

At the start of the 20th century the Katanga region in the southeast of what is now the DR Congo was a very sparsely populated area where the use of Swahili was restricted to specific settlements of traders and chiefs originating from elsewhere in East and Central Africa. A mere 40 years later, Swahili had become the main language of the new, rapidly growing mining cities of the Katanga Copperbelt. A continuous back and forth migration of people from all over Central Africa ensured an ongoing process of language restructuring. Migrants speaking rather closely related Bantu languages had to learn Swahili as a second language while their children acquired Swahili as a first language (in many cases as one of their ‘first’ languages). On the Copperbelt, contact-induced restructering of Swahili has resulted in structural reduction, expansion and innovation. Several characteristics of the restructured, localized, Katanga variety of Swahili will be discussed in some detail. The paper will propose some explanatory hypotheses for these structural outcomes, and will end by looking into the social significance of these features as strong indices of local belonging.

COAL MINING TERMINOLOGY IN THE COAL MINES OF DUTCH AND BELGIAN LIMBURG.

Coal mining dominated economy and societal life in large parts of Dutch and Belgian Limburg for more than 75 years. There were 19 mines, 12 in Dutch Limburg and 7 in Belgian Limburg. Labor power was recruited locally, but also from other parts of the Netherlands and from other countries. e.g. Germany, Poland and Italy.
The Dictionary of the Limburg Dialects contains a special issue on coal mining terminology (non-agricultural terminologies, volume 5: coalminer; XXX + 263 pages). The data was gathered through 36 extensive questionnaires filled in by/for local informants in their own dialect.
The coal mining terms in this area were borrowed from both the German and Walloon/French terminology. The German impact is particularly observable in Dutch Limburg, the Francophone one in Belgian Limburg. The third active language was Dutch. On top of that immigrating coalminers brought their own language, e.g. Polish and Italian. The consequence was a wide diversity of words for the same tools, places, and activities. Mine companies in Belgian Limburg distributed glossaries with terms in four languages (including Italian). The so-called State Mines Company (DSM; Dutch Limburg) actively introduced a completely Dutch-based, standardized coalmine terminology. The companies wanted to prevent misunderstandings and calamities caused by miscommunication.
Next to the multilingual lexical sources, another important source of variation in the phonetic and morphological make-up of word forms is to be found in the local dialects. Coalminers commonly communicated in dialect, having the consequence that the Limburgian isoglosses became visible in the coal mining terminology. Characteristics of the High German Sound Shift return in the terminology of the mine sites in Kerkrade, and the Panninger Line (palatalized s) splits the East from the Central Limburgian dialects. Coalminers coming from other Limburgian dialect regions adopted the local terminology, but they often kept using their own dialect sounds.
We will illustrate the competing sources of variation by linguistic maps of the mines sites area. Interestingly, the coal mine terminology hardly left any traces in the local dialect vocabularies. In addition, we found no linguistic traces of languages like Italian and Polish with one exception).

MOBILITY AND PLACE-MAKING IN AMAZONIAN GOLD MINES. OF MINERS, GOLD AND CULTURE.

Small scale gold mining takes place in remote parts of the nation states, far from bureaucratic regulations and formal authorities. In the contemporary gold rush in the Amazon, local populations and flexible migrants meet, negotiate, produce gold and ‘create' a local economy and community in the process. In this presentation I will focus on the main characteristics of this cultural encounter in the forest, and try to highlight some aspects of language too.

Bio: Jan Kohlbacher (Eisden 1936) zoon van Oostenrijkse ouders die in 1925 naar België kwamen. Groeide op in de mijnwerkerscité, was er onderwijzer en oprichter van de Stichting Erfgoed Eisden en het Museum van de Mijnwerkerswoning. En startte jaren geleden met een inventarisatie van de woordenschat van het Cité Duits.

HET CITÉ DUITS. EEN EILAND IN EEN ZEE VAN TALEN
Bij de start van de kolenindustrie in 1907 in Belgisch Limburg, was er geen ervaring betreffende mijnarbeid voorhanden. De mijnmaatschappijen wierven ingenieurs en arbeiders uit de Waalse kolenbekkens aan, waardoor de omgangstaal en het ondergrondse vakjargon het Frans-Waals werd.
Wanneer men vanaf 1920, op zoek moet naar nog meer ervaren mijnwerkers, zijn de Centraal- en Oost Europees kolengebieden, in het voormalige Oostenrijk-Hongarije, dankbare rekruteringvelden.
Vanaf 1922 komen ze in transporten van 100 man, Oostenrijkers, Noord Italianen, Hongaren, Tsjechen, Slowaken, Polen, Karpaten, Slovenen, Serviërs e.d., in Eisden aan.
Zij komen terecht bij een werkgever die, naar het Britse Garden City model, mooie woonwijken met alle mogelijke culturele en recreatieve infrastructuren, ter beschikking stelt. Wie in een dergelijk Cité woonde moest deze wijk zelfs niet verlaten om in zijn dagelijkse behoeften te voorzien. Zodat de bewoners, in hun volledig door de mijnbazen beheerst en georganiseerd leven, zich als het ware in een eilandsituatie bevonden.
De taalsituatie in het openbaar leven werd door het toenmalige Belgische model bepaald. Van de preken in de kerk, de straatnaamborden tot het onderwijs verliep alles in de Frans-Nederlandse tweetaligheid. Terwijl de officiële mededelingen van de mijndirectie naar de arbeiders in het Frans, Nederlands en Duits gebeurden
De buitenlanders vinden zich in eigen verenigingen, die met muziek- en toneelavonden hun heimatgevoel cultiveerden en daarbij hun eigen taal spraken. In hun dagdagelijkse omgang bedienen de mannen, zich van het Duits, of van “een Duits” dat zij aan hun legerdienst of aan de omgang met de Duitstalige overheid, overhielden. Met daarin verweven de woordenschat uit het Franstalige vakjargon.
De mannelijke jeugd nam dit taalgebruik over. Met dien verstande dat zij in hun dagelijkse omgang ook woorden van hun Hongaarse, Poolse, Sloveense e.a. vrienden overnamen. Dit alles omkaderd door het Vlaams dat zij in de school leerden….

Bio: Ad Knotter is directeur van het Sociaal Historisch Centrum voor Limburg en hoogleraar aan de Universiteit Maastricht in de vergelijkende regionale geschiedenis. In 2015 was hij mederedacteur van een Special Issue van de International Review of Social History over ‘Migration and Ethnicity in Coalfield History: Global Perspectives’.

MIGRATIE EN INTERETNISCHE VERHOUDINGEN IN DE GESCHIEDENIS VAN DE STEENKOOLMIJNBOUW: EEN MONDIAAL PERSPECTIEF
De industriële en transportrevolutie van de negentiende en vroege twintigste eeuw is niet denkbaar zonder steenkool, en dat geldt ook voor het kolonialisme en de globalisering die daardoor op gang kwam. Kolen leverden niet alleen energie voor de industriële activiteiten in de moederlanden en de koloniën, maar ook voor de wereldwijde verbindingen via spoorwegen en stoomschepen. Om in deze energiebehoefte te voorzien werden overal in de wereld, tot in de meest desolate uithoeken, steenkolenmijnen geopend. Om de exploitatie daarvan mogelijk te maken moesten arbeiders worden aangetrokken, zowel geschoolde mijnwerkers (veelal uit Groot-Brittannië) als laaggeschoold personeel uit nabije en verder weggelegen herkomstgebieden. Overal in de wereld is mijnbouw onlosmakelijk verbonden met migratie. Pogingen om voldoende arbeidskrachten te vinden leidden vaak tot de werving van etnische minderheidsgroepen met een lage sociale status. In dat opzicht was er een groot verschil met de geschoolde mijnwerkers die de mijnbouw tot ontwikkeling brachten. Etnische verschillen waren nauw verbonden met verschillen in geschooldheid en sociale status. Hoewel er tal van voorbeelden zijn van interetnische samenwerking en solidariteit, konden deze verschillen de samenleving in de mijnwerkersgemeenschappen diepgaand beïnvloeden.

Deze processen zullen worden belicht aan de hand van voorbeelden uit mijnbouwgebieden in de hele wereld (Azië, Amerika, Afrika en Europa).

Zo begint de theatermonoloog Doa tuut ‘t, die de dichter Wiel Kusters, zoon en kleinzoon van Limburgse mijnwerkers, in 1998 schreef voor theaterwerkplaats Het Kruis van Bourgondië. In 2011 werd zijn tekst opnieuw op het toneel gebracht in een vroegere mijnstreek, nu die van Belgisch Limburg.
Doa tuut ‘t / Schachtsignalen is in 2012 heruitgegeven in de reeks Literair Limburg van uitgeverij B for Books, met een vertaling naar het Kerkraads door Lei Heijenrath.
Vanmiddag brengt Wiel Kusters Doa tuut ’t zelf als verteller ten gehore.

Bio: Bart Delbroek promoveerde in 2011 aan de Vrije Universiteit Brussel op het proefschrift dat nu verschijnt in de reeks Maaslandse Monografieën. Hij was daarna als onderzoeker verbonden aan het Katholiek Documentatiecentrum (KADOC) in Leuven en aan het Sociaal Historisch Centrum voor Limburg in Maastricht. Hij volgde de archiefopleiding in Brussel en is thans werkzaam als archivaris bij het Agentschap Onroerend Erfgoed te Brussel.

AIMS:

AlCoB aims at promoting and displaying excellent research using string and graph algorithms and combinatorial optimization to deal with problems in biological sequence analysis, genome rearrangement, evolutionary trees, and structure prediction.

Previous events were held in Tarragona (2014) and Mexico City (2015).

The conference will address several of the current challenges in computational biology by investigating algorithms aimed at:

1) assembling sequence reads into a complete genome,
2) identifying gene structures in the genome,
3) recognizing regulatory motifs,
4) aligning nucleotides and comparing genomes,
5) reconstructing regulatory networks of genes, and
6) inferring the evolutionary phylogeny of species.

Particular focus will be put on methodology and significant room will be reserved to young scholars at the beginning of their career.

VENUE:

AlCoB 2016 will take place in Trujillo, homeland of the so-called “conquistadores” who arrived in Peru in the XVI century. The venue will be the Extremadura Centre for Advanced Technologies.

Doing Research with Discourse Analysis: A discourse perspective on making sense of social change

AMSS 2016, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, 2-16 July 2016
For the second year the VU Amsterdam Summer School offers a 2-week intensive course in discourse analysis for students in the social sciences, history, health, education, law, politics and any other field connected with social practice. The course provides a colourful pallet of approaches and domains to energise your academic skills by ‘doing research with discourse analysis’. Please feel free to distribute widely.
Through various cases of transdisciplinary research design you learn to reason why and how you can incorporate discourse analysis in your own field of study. The course provides a framework to make sense of social phenomena on the principle that language not only reflects society and change but also drives it. The focus is on analysing language use and other forms of communication to generate evidence of social phenomena, such as racism, politics, power, social movements, forensics, health care, teaching, peace, war, (in)equality. We offer an inspiring program with expert lecturers from the VU Communication and Information Sciences and Organisation Discourse departments, and guests from Fribourg University, Lancaster University, and the University of East Anglia. Classes will be highly interactive. We all learn from each other!

Theory and Methods: The art of Transdisciplinary Research Design; context and data selection; text analysis; ethnography and conversation analysis; framing, metaphor, humour; cognitive- and historical discourse analysis; soundscape analysis; computational- and corpus-assisted discourse analysis.
Excursion: The International Criminal Court in The Hague is a prime setting to observe the relationship between international law, human rights and cultural diversity that is reflected in this court's discourse and its far-reaching global impact. Plus: lunch on the beach.

We are happy to announce that the 11th Cambridge Italian Dialect Syntax-Morphology Meeting will take place at the Department of Romance Studies of the University of Vienna on 04–06 July 2016. The meeting aims to bring together dialectologists working on any aspect of the syntax and/or morphology of the dialects of Italy (including non-Romance varieties) and encourages all approaches – whether synchronic or diachronic, descriptive or theoretical (all frameworks) – to the regional languages and dialects spoken throughout Italy. This year CIDSM will feature a thematic session on the High German dialects spoken in Italy.

Call for Papers

Abstracts on any aspect of the syntax and/or morphology of the dialects of Italy (including non-Romance varieties) will be considered for presentation. There will also be a poster session. During the abstract submission procedure, please indicate (through the Abstract Classification drop-down menu), whether you prefer to submit your abstract for presentation or for the poster session only, or if you would rather like it to be considered for both. If your abstract is intended for the special thematic session, please select the relevant option.

Abstracts are invited for 20-minute talks (plus 10 for questions) or for posters. Submissions are limited to 1 individual and 1 joint abstract per author, or 2 joint abstracts per author. The abstract should include the title, but not the author’s name(s). Abstracts should be no longer than two pages in length (including examples and references), in 12-point font size.

The conference languages are English and Italian (English only for the thematic session).

Speakers will be notified of the results of their abstract review by 6 March 2016.

Siamo lieti di annunciare che il Cambridge Italian Dialect Syntax-Morphology Meeting XI sarà ospitato dal Dipartimento di Romanistica dell’Università di Vienna dal 4 al 6 luglio 2016. L’obiettivo di questo convegno è di offrire una piattaforma di discussione e scambio tra i dialettologi che lavorano sulla sintassi e/o morfologia dei dialetti d’Italia (comprese le varietà non romanze) e di incoraggiare tutti gli approcci – sia sincronici che diacronici, sia descrittivi che teorici e formali – alle lingue regionali e ai dialetti d’Italia. Durante la procedura per l’invio, sarà possibile specificare se si desidera presentare un riassunto per una relazione o per la sessione dei poster, o se invece si vuole essere considerati per entrambi. Sarà possibile anche indicare se il riassunto è indirizzato alla sessione tematica speciale.

Le presentazioni avranno una durata di 20 minuti (più 10 minuti per le domande). Ciascun autore può presentare al massimo due riassunti: uno come autore unico e l’altro in collaborazione, oppure due riassunti in collaborazione. Il riassunto deve includere il titolo, ma non il nome dell’autore/i nomi degli autori. I riassunti dovranno avere una lunghezza massima di due pagine, inclusi esempi e riferimenti bibliografici, con carattere 12.

Le lingue ufficiali del convegno sono inglese e italiano (solo l’inglese per la sessione tematica).

Lexicom is a five-day intensive workshop created by the Lexicography MasterClass. Seminars on theoretical issues alternate with hands-on work using a range of corpus-analysis and other software tools. Working in small groups or individually, you will learn how to develop dictionaries and other lexical resources, from the creation and annotation of corpora to the planning, design and writing of lexical entries. International Academy for Conversation Analysis (IACA16)
July 11 – 14, 2016, in Groningen, The Netherlands

IACA16 will take place in between two ICCA-conferences (2014 and 2018) and will focus on the research process rather than on research output. The academy is meant for CA researchers in all career stages, including PhD students. The Metaphor Lab Amsterdam is delighted to announce that the next Metaphor Festival will take place in Amsterdam from 31 August through 3 September 2016. The Metaphor Festival is an annual conference on the use of figurative language and other modes of figurative expression. It used to be arranged by the Department of English at Stockholm University. From 2006 through 2015, a series of ten successful conferences was held in Stockholm bringing together researchers from a broad range of academic disciplines, working within different theoretical and methodological paradigms in a creative, internationally oriented, and friendly atmosphere. The Stockholm organizers have now asked whether the Metaphor Lab Amsterdam can continue this tradition, and we are more than happy to do so.

The importance of figurative language and figurative semiotics is now generally recognized, and the Festival offers an opportunity to present and learn about research findings concerning figurative uses in different types of human communication, and their cognitive, cultural, narrative, poetic, rhetorical, social, textual or discourse functions. Contributions to the general session of the Festival can address the linguistic and/or literary character and use of tropes—metaphor, metonymy, simile, oxymoron, hyperbole, litotes, punning, and irony—or the character and use of rhyme schemes, various types of parallelism and other formal poetic constructions, as well as the nature of figurative signs and devices in multi-modal or non-verbal communication. Each talk is allotted 30 minutes, roughly 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion.

The combination of metaphor and Amsterdam in a festival has prompted the Metaphor Lab Amsterdam to celebrate this configuration in one new way: after two days of academic work on 1 and 2 September, Saturday 3 September will be different. It will feature metaphor slams (deliberate metaphor production; resistance to metaphor battle; debating by metaphor contest), outreach activities to the non-academic community (metaphor in the real worlds of health care, marketing, organization and management, politics and so on), and metaphor-related artistic performances (poetry readings, stand-up comedy, music). All of this is well matched with the so-called Amsterdam Time Out Market, from Friday evening 2 September through Sunday evening 4 September, with previews of the complete Time Out season 2016-2017 in a festival covering the entire city attracting tens of thousands of people.

Abstract guidelines: Abstracts should be 400 words maximum (without references), and written in English (please provide glosses or translations for examples in other languages). The abstract should have a title, but the author’s name, academic affiliation, and email address should be indicated on a separate sheet, where it should also be specified whether the abstract is intended as a basis for a general session talk or a poster presentation.

All abstracts should submitted by Easychair from 1 March. Deadline for submission is 31 March. Information about acceptances will be emailed by 15 April to all scholars submitting an abstract.

The European School of Linguistic Typology 2016, Porquerolles, France, September 4-17, 2016

The European School of Linguistic Typology 2016 is a two-week summer school organized by CNRS, the University of Cologne, and the University of Amsterdam. The School will be held on Porquerolles Island, off the French Mediterranean Coast from September 4 to 17, 2016. The School will offer high-level training in linguistic typology, its objectives, and methods to researchers, postdocs and students. We are pleased to announce the "Aix Summer School on Prosody 2016 " to be held from September 6-9, 2016 in Aix en Provence (France).

The Aix Summer School on Prosody 2016 will bring together experts on theoretical and practical aspects of the research on prosody. The school will be organized around morning lectures and afternoon tutorials (where participants will practice concepts and skills discussed in lectures) and data clinics (where participants can bring together their own data and questions for discussion).

The school is intended for post-graduate students and researchers interested in all the theoretical and practical aspects of the research on prosody and intonation. The school will be suitable both for researchers already working on intonation and prosody, and wishing to learn more about specific topics, and for researchers who wish to better understand how to incorporate and control prosody in their own work.

Topics will include (but not limited to): theoretical models on prosody and intonation; perception of intonation; prosody and language pathologies; prosody, semantics, and discourse; prosody and L2; prosody and neurolinguistics; transcription of intonation and prosody; statistical methods in prosody research; and preparation of stimuli for perception studies.

Community-based Building of Language Resources, CBBLR

The main topic of the workshop is directed at building new language

The second workshop on Psycholinguistic Approaches to Speech Recognition in Adverse Conditions (PASRAC) will be held in Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
The workshop is a follow-up on the first workshop organised in Bristol in March 2010.

The aim of the two-day workshop is to bring together scientists from different disciplines, including psychology, linguistics, computer science, neuroscience, and cognitive science, working on the topic of speech recognition in adverse conditions.

AIO 'Variatie binnen het taalsysteem van auteurs in de Nederlandse Gouden Eeuw in relatie tot het interne taalsysteem' (0,8 - 1,0 fte)

Functie
In het kader van het NWO project "Language Dynamics in the Dutch Golden Age: linguistic and social-cultural aspects of intra-author variation" is bij de onderzoeksinstituut UiL-OTS en ICON plaats voor 2 Assistenten-In-Opleiding (AIO). Onderzoeksprogramma Mede dankzij een dynamisch politiek, religieus en cultureel klimaat was het Nederlands in de Gouden Eeuw volop in beweging. Door standaardisatieprocessen en natuurlijke taalontwikkelingen was de taal een smeltkroes van langzaam verdwijnende taaleigenschappen uit het Middelnederlands en nieuwe mogelijkheden om woorden en zinnen te vormen. Deze taaldynamiek resulteerde in veel variatie binnen auteurs (intra-author variation). Dit project wil begrijpen welke factoren ten grondslag liggen aan die variatie. Onze hypothese is dat de variatie het resultaat was van een dynamische interactie tussen het interne taalsysteem van taalgebruikers enerzijds en hun sociaal/literair-culturele context anderzijds. Het taalsysteem van een taalgebruiker maakte variatiemogelijkheden beschikbaar, die vervolgens door een taalgebruiker systematisch en vaak strategisch werden ingezet, afhankelijk van bijvoorbeeld het publiek of de doelstellingen en literaire vormgeving van zijn tekst. Het project is georganiseerd in drie subprojecten:
 AIO 1 verklaart intra-author variation vanuit het taalsysteem;
 AIO 2 verklaart intra-author variation vanuit een literair-cultureel perspectief;
 een Postdoc zal patronen van intra-author variation blootleggen via digitale kwantitatieve tools.

Doel en taakbeschrijving
Dit deelproject heeft tot doel om de variatie binnen auteurs te onderzoeken vanuit het generatief taalkundige perspectief dat mensen een intern taalsysteem hebben dat gedeeltelijk universele en gedeeltelijk taalspecifieke eigenschappen bevat. De AIO in dit project brengt variatie binnen auteurs in kaart en vertrekt bij de analyse van deze variatie vanuit dit perspectief, maar neemt daarbij tevens het literaire perspectief op de data in beschouwing. Er is dus een intensieve samenwerking met zowel de postdoc als de andere AIO in dit project.

Concreet ga je in dit subproject:
 een proefschrift schrijven;
 enkele tijdschriftpublicaties afleveren en congreslezingen houden, al dan niet samen met andere projectleden;
 bijdragen aan het gezamenlijke afsluitende congres dat de projectgroep organiseert;
 de morfo-syntactische variatie binnen auteurs in het 17e eeuws Nederlands vanuit een generatief-taalkundig perspectief in kaart brengen en analyseren;
 meewerken aan het samenstellen van een digitaal corpus met 17e-eeuwse teksten;
 bruggen slaan naar de andere disciplines in het project, in het bijzonder naar de historische letterkunde en de historische sociolinguïstiek;
 onderwijs volgen binnen de Landelijke Onderzoekschool Taalwetenschap (LOT).
Je wordt begeleid door prof. dr. Norbert Corver (promotor), dr. Marjo van Koppen en dr. Feike Dietz (dagelijks begeleiders).

Profiel
Wij zoeken een promovendus met enthousiasme voor historisch taalkundig onderzoek naar het Nederlands. Je dient
 afgestudeerd te zijn of binnenkort af te studeren (tot een maand voor de startdatum van het project) in de taalwetenschap, neerlandistiek, of een andere taalstudie (bij voorkeur op RMA-niveau);
 expertise te hebben in de generatieve taalkunde en affiniteit met de historische taalkunde, de historische letterkunde en de digital humanities;
 open te staan voor interdisciplinair onderzoek waarbij taalkunde wordt gecombineerd met letterkunde;
 expertise te hebben in het lezen/analyseren van historische teksten;
 goed te kunnen samenwerken in een team, maar ook zelfstandig te kunnen opereren;
 een uitstekende beheersing van het Nederlands en Engels te hebben;
 uitstekende onderzoeks- en schrijfkwaliteiten te hebben.

Aanbod
Wij bieden een aanstelling als AIO voor de duur van 18 maanden per 1 september 2016 met, na evaluatie, de mogelijkheid tot verlenging met nog eens maximaal 2,5 jaar (1,0 fte). De omvang van de functie is 80 tot 100%. je salaris bedraagt in het eerste jaar € 2.172,- bruto per maand en loopt op tot € 2.779,- bruto per maand in het vierde jaar (volgens de cao Nederlandse Universiteiten) bij een volledige aanstelling. Je mag rekenen op aantrekkelijke secundaire arbeidsvoorwaarden, zoals 8% vakantiegeld en 8,3% eindejaarsuitkering. Onderzoeksinstituten Het onderzoek van de Faculteit Geesteswetenschappen is ondergebracht bij vier onderzoekinstituten, Utrecht Instituut voor Linguïstiek OTS (UiL OTS), het Instituut voor Cultuurwetenschappelijk ONderzoek (ICON), ZENO en Integon. Bij deze instituten zijn de onderzoekstaken van het wetenschappelijk personeel en de promotie-opleidingen georganiseerd. Bij het UiL-OTS werken een kleine honderd onderzoekers waaronder negentien hoogleraren, een vijftiental postdocs en ongeveer veertig promovendi. Het doel van het UiL OTS is het ontwikkelen van wetenschappelijke expertise op het gebied van taal, spraak en hun gebruik. Het instituut is penvoerder van de Landelijke Onderzoekschool Taalwetenschap. Het ICON is een breed cultuurhistorisch onderzoeksinstituut, georganiseerd in verschillende onderzoeksgroepen: Genderstudies, Literatuur, Media en performance, Middeleeuwse cultuur en Muziekwetenschap. De onderzoeksgroep Literatuur kent een subgroep Vroegmoderne literatuur, die weer in direct contact staat met andere Utrechtse vroegmodernisten via het Utrecht Centre for Early Modern Studies (UCEMS). In totaal zijn er een kleine vijftig vroegmodernisten werkzaam bij Geesteswetenschappen. Het onderzoeksproject "Language Dynamics" is een interdisciplinaire samenwerking tussen het UiL-OTS en het ICON.

The master’s degree programme in Applied Linguistics at the University of Groningen is a unique programme focusing on the processes involved in second-language learning, as well as didactic theory. The new professor’s research will focus on one or more of the subdomains of Applied Linguistics (linguistics, psychology/cognitive psychology, pedagogy etc.)



Job description
The new full professor will:
• provide leadership, motivation and supervision to the staff of the Applied Linguistics chair group
• make a strong and inspiring contribution to the teaching programme in Applied Linguistics (including its development), at BA, MA and PhD levels
• supervise PhD theses
• coordinate and conduct research in the field
• acquire external funding for research
• perform administrative and organizational duties within and potentially outside the Faculty.



Qualifications
Applicants must:
• have a PhD in the field of Applied Linguistics
• have a track record of outstanding, internationally recognized research, with publications in leading journals in this field
• have demonstrated the ability to acquire external research funding and supervise/co-supervise PhD theses
• have excellent leadership and organizational skills
• have demonstrated excellent teaching skills and has the ability to innovate
• have the ability to cooperate and work within a team
• be fluent in English (C1 level of the CEFR) and has a good knowledge of Dutch, or is willing to learn this language to B2 level of the CEFR within two years
• be willing to take up residence in or near the city of Groningen.



Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers a salary depending on qualifications and work experience. For candidates at full professor level, the salary ranges from a minimum of € 5,219 to a maximum of € 7,599 (salary scale Full Professor 2 of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, as of 1 January 2016) gross per month for a fulltime (1.0 fte) position, excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees.
The new professor will start work in January 2017.

The Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS will be hosting a two-day workshop on ‘Learner corpus based approaches to second language acquisition’ on 31 March – 1 April, 2017.

The main objective of the workshop is to bring together SLA and LCR specialists to examine the usefulness of learner corpus data for second language research and to assess the relevance of SLA theory for learner corpus design and analysis.

- address SLA research questions with the help of learner corpus data and corpus linguistic techniques
- test key constructs in SLA theory on the basis of learner corpus data
- carry out a learner corpus study and compare results with findings from previous SLA studies that relied on more experimental techniques
- adopt a mixed method approach that involves learner corpus data as one of the data types used
- revisit previous LCR studies in the light of SLA theory

We particularly like the idea that the workshop’s organization could serve as a springboard for more active collaboration between SLA and LCR specialists. We therefore strongly encourage collaborative proposals.

Abstracts (max. 500 words + references) should specify how the paper will contribute to the theme of the workshop. It should also provide a clear outline of the aim of the paper including clearly articulated research question(s), some details about research approach and methods and (preliminary) results. Description:
Non-classical logics -- such as modal logics, conditional logics,
intuitionistic logic, description logics, temporal logics, linear
logic, dynamic logic, fuzzy logic, paraconsistent logic, relevance
logic -- have many applications in AI, Computer Science, Philosophy,
Linguistics and Mathematics. Hence, the automation of proof search
in these logics is a crucial task.

The ARQNL workshop aims at fostering the development of proof calculi,
automated theorem proving systems and model finders for all sorts of
quantified non-classical logics. The workshop will provide a forum for
researchers to present and discuss recent developments in this area.
The contributions may range from theory to system descriptions and
implementations. Contributions may also outline relevant applications
and describe example problems and benchmarks. We welcome contributions
from computer scientists, linguists, philosophers, and mathematicians.

You are invited to submit an abstract of a paper from your own field, as seen through the prism of the conference theme, Imagining the Low Lands. Paper proposals on other topics or themes are also most welcome – an ICNS tradition. Select papers may be included in a conference publication to follow. Graduate students are especially encouraged to participate.

Please submit abstracts of 250 words, (accompanied by curriculum vitae) to toebosch(removeme)umich.edu with “ICNS Abstract” in the subject line by December 15, 2015. Acceptance notification will be given by February 1, 2016.

Building on the success of the previous conferences, the Institute of English Studies at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, Poland, is organising the 4th meeting of Linguistics Beyond And Within - International Linguistics Conference in Lublin. The conference, to be held on 20-21 October 2016, will be hosted by the Department of Applied Linguistics, the Department of Theoretical Linguistics, the Department of Contrastive English-Polish Studies and the Department of Celtic Studies. This year the talks will be guided by the following leitmotif:
Controversy in Linguistics and Language Studies
As previously, we would like to invite scholars with innovative approaches to linguistics viewed from a range of intra- and interdisciplinary perspectives. We wish to encourage all linguists representing various theoretical models and practical applications to present their contributions during both oral and poster sessions in the following research areas:
 theoretical linguistics
o phonetics & phonology
o morphology
o semantics
o syntax
 corpus studies
 applied linguistics
o language teaching & language acquisition
o pragmatics
o discourse analysis
o translation studies
 socio- and psycholinguistics



Each paper presentation in an oral session will be scheduled for a 20-minute talk followed by a 10-minute discussion. Poster sessions will last about 45 minutes when the authors are required to be present and ready to answer questions from participants passing by. The poster format is 100x70cm (vertical orientation). The language of the conference is English.



Abstract submission
Abstracts of no more than 400 words (including references) should be sent by 30th June 2016 in .doc format to our e-mail address: lingbaw@gmail.com. It is expected that any paper presented at LingBaW 2016 is original and has not been previously presented or published.
In the body of the email, please include the following information: title of paper, name of author, scientific degree, affiliation, research area (one from the abovementioned) and form of presentation (speech / poster).
Abstracts will be reviewed anonymously. Please do not put your name on the abstract itself.
Notification of acceptance will be sent by 15th August.



Call for workshop proposals
The upcoming edition of the LingBaW Conference will also host two thematic workshops up to a limit of ten papers plus one slot for an introductory paper by workshop convenors.
The deadline for the submission of workshop proposals is 31st May 2016.
Each workshop proposal must include the title, a 500-word abstract that summarizes the theme and goals of the workshop and the names, affiliations, and contact details of the workshop organizers. The proposal should also contain a list of five prospective participants. It should also indicate any special requirements you might have in terms of equipment.
Workshop organizers are responsible for advertising the workshop, organizing the reviewing process, and running the workshop.

The conference fee is 300 PLN (€80) and includes conference materials, reception, refreshments and publication of the proceedings.

Are you fascinated by the uniquely human capacity of language and by how our brains support our ability to communicate with each other? Do you want to learn how to do cutting-edge research in this domain? If so, this Master’s programme is for you.

The Master-of-Science programme in Cognitive Neuroscience (MSc CNS) is an interdisciplinary two-year (120 EC) research-master’s programme. It is part of the Donders Graduate School for Cognitive Neuroscience of Radboud University, Nijmegen. Lecturers in the Language and Communication specialisation of the programme are world-leading researchers in different disciplines of language science. They have positions at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, or the Centre for Language Studies.

The first year (60 EC) of the MSc CNS programme aims to lay the theoretical groundwork, and is mainly devoted to general courses in cognitive neuroscience as well as specialisation courses and skill training. All courses are in English. The second year (60 EC) is largely dedicated to conducting a research project (45 EC) to gain hands-on research experience in one of the participating research institutes and research groups.

Reisbeurs voor workshop over machine learning op basis van beperkt beschikbare taalbronnen (MaLLoRE)

De Nederlandse Taalunie (NTU) en het Ministerie van Taal en Cultuur van Zuid-Afrika (DAC) ondersteunen activiteiten en evenementen die bijdragen aan de verbetering en verbreding van de relatie tussen het taal- en spraaktechnologieveld in Zuid-Afrika, Nederland en Vlaanderen. Voor deelname aan de MaLLoRE-workshop hebben de NTU en DAC reisbeurzen beschikbaar gesteld voor masterstudenten en promovendi wiens onderzoek van belang is voor kennis over taal- en spraaktechnologie voor het Nederlands en een van de officiële talen van Zuid-Afrika. De MaLLoRE-workshop vindt plaats op LREC 2016 in Slovenië.

Naar de dissertatieprijs 2015 konden dissertaties meedingen die verdedigd waren in het academisch jaar 2014/2015 (16 juli 2014-15 juli 2015). Er werden 13 dissertaties ingediend, afkomstig uit heel Nederland. In deze proefschriften wordt taal vanuit diverse invalshoeken geanalyseerd.

Er was een jury samengesteld die de breedte van de inzendingen dekte. De jury bestond uit 5 leden. Haike Jacobs (Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen), Maria Mos (Universiteit Tilburg), Frank van Meurs (Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen) en Roel van Steensel (Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam). Ondergetekende, Petra Sleeman (Universiteit van Amsterdam), was voorzitter van de jury. Marjolein Deunk fungeerde als secretaris vanuit Anéla en Janine Berns was schaduwsecretaris vanuit AvT.

De kwaliteit van alle proefschriften was bijzonder goed, wat het de jury moeilijk maakte om een shortlist samen te stellen. De jury vergeleek de proefschriften op de volgende punten: reikwijdte, methodologie, vakmanschap, originaliteit, impact en helderheid van verslaglegging. Na een zorgvuldige afweging kwam de jury tot de volgende shortlist, in alfabetische volgorde gepresenteerd:

•Vadim Kimmelman, Information Structure in Russian Sign Language and Sign Language of the Netherlands (Universiteit van Amsterdam).
•Koen Sebregts, The Sociophonetics and Phonology of Dutch r (Universiteit Utrecht).
•Gerdineke van Silfhout. Fun to read or easy to understand? Establishing effective text features for educational texts on the basis of processing and comprehension research (Universiteit Utrecht).
•Karin Wanrooij. Distributional learning of vowel categories in infants and adults (Universiteit van Amsterdam).

De jury was het unaniem eens over de uitzonderlijke kwaliteit en originaliteit van deze vier dissertaties. De proefschiften getuigen van theoretische diepgang, een groot vakmanschap, een uitstekende methodologische aanpak, waardevolle resultaten met een mogelijk grote impact en een zeer heldere verslaglegging. Twee van de proefschriften zijn een coherente bundeling van artikelen, de twee andere hebben een “klassieke” opzet. De specifieke kwaliteiten van de vier dissertaties worden hieronder in het kort weergegeven:

In zijn zeer informatieve en goed geschreven en gevisualiseerde proefschrift vergelijkt Vadim Kimmelman de uitdrukking van Informatiestructuur in twee gebarentalen, Nederlandse Gebarentaal en Russische Gebarentaal. Deze vergelijking is zeer origineel, niet alleen omdat deze talen nog niet eerder met elkaar vergeleken waren, maar ook omdat dezelfde methodologie gebruikt is, waaronder een vernieuwende elicitatietechniek. Het proefschrift draagt in belangrijke mate bij aan de beschrijving van Russische Gebarentaal, in het bijzonder de Informatiestructuur. De jury heeft bewondering voor de inspanning die Kimmelman heeft geleverd door zijn zelf verzamelde corpus van Russische Gebarentaal te transcriberen, zodat het geanalyseerd en beschikbaar gesteld kon worden. Bijzonder is dat de analyse niet alleen de syntaxis, maar ook prosodische en fonetische kenmerken van de gebarentaalzinnen betreft. Met een diepgaande theoretische en statistische analyse van de corpora en experimenteel onderzoek wordt een significante bijdrage geleverd aan cross-modale typologie en aan de theoretische discussie over Informatiestructuur in taal.

In het ook voor niet fonologen en niet fonetici zeer goed te lezen proefschrift van Koen Sebregts wordt de r vanuit diachroon en sociolinguïstisch perspectief onderzocht. Het rijke en volwassen proefschrift rapporteert over een grootschalig onderzoek naar de uitspraak van de r dat uitgevoerd is bij de HEMA in 10 steden in Nederland en Vlaanderen. Daarnaast heeft Sebregts ook een knap opgezet en uitgevoerd fonetisch onderzoek verricht. Door middel van een zorgvuldige analyse van de data van de 400 proefpersonen worden de verschillende varianten van r gecategoriseerd en van elkaar onderscheiden. Een origineel element is de keuze voor Wittgensteins “family resemblances” om de relaties tussen r-realisaties uit te beelden. De statistische analyses zijn uitstekend uitgevoerd. De jury heeft een grote bewondering voor Sebregts theoretische vakmanschap, die tot uitdrukking komt in de multi-disciplinaire benadering.

Het proefschrift van Gerdineke van Silfhout is maatschappelijk zeer relevant. In de dissertatie wordt de effectiviteit van presentatie van lesmateriaal in middelbare schoolmethodes bestudeerd door middel van een mooie coherente set van experimenten die verschillende aspecten van de presentatie van informatie in lesmateriaal onderzoeken: verbindingswoorden, layout en narrativiteit. De experimenten zijn zorgvuldig uitgevoerd. Ze zijn gedaan door middel van een nog niet eerder gehanteerde combinatie van leerderevaluaties en eyetracking onderzoek. De resultaten zijn op vakkundige wijze statistisch geanalyseerd en worden op heldere wijze gerapporteerd. De interessante resultaten laten zien dat de presentatie van lesmateriaal dat op de middelbare school gebruikt worden verbeterd dient te worden, een warme aanbeveling voor leergangontwikkelaars.

De dissertatie van Karin Wanrooij bevat een zeer heldere rapportage van een studie naar akoestisch-statistisch leren bij baby’s en volwassenen, gelardeerd met oogstrelende foto’s van de piepjonge proefpersonen. Door middel van een mooie samenhangende set van experimenten wordt bestudeerd hoe vowassenen en heel jonge kinderen klinkercategorieën leren. Dankzij een vernieuwende methode en een vakkundig uitgevoerde statistische analyse wordt in het proefschrift aangetoond dat baby’s vanaf 2 maanden al gevoelig zijn voor de statistiek van hun moedertaal, en niet vanaf 6 tot 8 maanden, zoals men eerder dacht. Wanrooij slaagt er uitstekend in de resultaten in haar brede kennis van de literatuur over het onderwerp in te bedden.

Vanwege de multi-disciplinaire theoretische benadering, de uitstekende methodologie en analyse, de glasheldere rapportage en de verwachte grote impact heeft de jury besloten om de dissertatieprijs 2015 toe te kennen aan Koen Sebregts.
