Credits for PhD/RM-students affiliated with LOT for EMLAR 2018, Utrecht, April 18-20, 2018

EMLAR 2018, 18-20 April 2018


EMLAR provides specific training in experimental methods for language acquisition research, and is organized yearly in Utrecht. RM/PhD students can earn LOT credits through participation in EMLAR.

RM/PhD students enrolled at one of the Dutch universities can also earn credits by participating in EMLAR and other local training activities scheduled at one of the LOT institutes. Starting in 2018, these credits will be signed off as LOT credits, so they can be used to replace participation in one of the LOT schools. Students who participate in all three days of EMLAR, including tutorials can earn 2,5 ects. Certficates will be sent out by the LOT bureau after fulfillment of all obligations. Students can complete this to fulfill the 5 ects requirement of participation in a national graduate school by writing a paper under the supervision of a supervisor from their local institute. The requirements on the paper are determined by the local MA programme director.

In veel Limburgse dialecten kun je met toon betekenisverschil uitdrukken. Een haas bijvoorbeeld, kun je in Roermond met Pasen tegenkomen, maar met een ander toonhoogteverloop betekent hetzelfde woord opeens ‘handschoen’. Nieuw onderzoek van de Radboud Universiteit laat zien dat Limburgse moedertaalsprekers daarom ook gevoeliger zijn voor toon dan Nederlandse moedertaalsprekers.

Vector representations and word embeddings have become increasingly popular in linguistic research. Representing words in a continuous vector space where semantically similar words are embedded close to each other, word embeddings have shown to be very powerful, enabling simple mathematical operations on words.


Famously, word embeddings allow for researchers to discover analogies between words. Solving the equation “[king] - [man] = x - [woman]” (read this as “What relates to woman, as king relates to man?”) for x, gives us a new vector. The word vector closest to that newly calculated vector x is indeed the vector for queen.


Representing language as vectors creates all kinds of other possibilities, too, such as automatic one-on-one translation of words and automatic extraction of verbal paradigms, but its possibilities are not limited to the lexical or the morphological domain.


In this workshop we shall first dive into word embeddings in a hands-on tutorial on how to work with word embeddings yourself. In the afternoon there will be a session with lectures on what can be done with word embeddings and vector representations in linguistic research.


We kindly ask you to enroll for the workshop, since there is a limited amount of places for the hands-on tutorial in the morning (18). You can enroll  here. Please indicate whether you plan to come for the whole workshop, or only for the morning or the afternoon. Lunch will not be provided.

Workshop 'Predicting and improving readability', Utrecht, April 5, 2018

Predicting and improving readability: which data, which predictors?

At April 6 2018, Suzanne Kleijn will defend her thesis. As this brings renowned readability researchers to Utrecht, we take this as an occasion to convene a workshop on readability research. We have asked our speakers to reflect on three issues in particular, using their earlier empirical work as a background.

- What kind of readability data do we use? Traditional readability work used cloze testing data. Such data are scarce for many languages. Recently we have seen other data sources, most notably readability assessments of text by either experts or lay readers. Do these data provide a solution for the data scarcity problem?

- What kind of predictors do we use? Classic readability work used shallow linguistic features such as word and sentence length. From the eighties on, linguists and discourse analysts have proposed more sophisticated features regarding lexis, syntax and cohesion. Later on, computational work has extended the set of potential predictors by, for instance, n-gram features and probability features such as entropy. What do we want from our predictors, besides being powerful enough to do the job?

- Some researchers confines themselves to readability prediction, others are interested in readability improvement as well. In fact, much of the popularity of readability formulas is probably due to the expectation that they help to communicate more clearly. However, improvement-oriented readability researchers face additional constraints regarding research design and predictor selection. For instance, they need to estimate both text effects and text version effects, which complicates matters considerably.

We remind you that the fourteenth edition of EMLAR is taking place in Utrecht, the Netherlands, from April 18th to April 20th 2018 (Wednesday to Friday). Many participants have signed up already and the tutorials are filling up fast, so sign up quickly to catch a spot at your tutorials of choice!

The workshop aims at training advanced MA and PhD students working on first and second language acquisition in experimental research. Experts in various domains of language acquisition research are giving various lectures and practices (see below).

SCOPE:

HighPer 2018 will be a research training event with a global scope aiming at updating participants about the most recent advances in the critical and fast developing area of high performance computing, which covers a large spectrum of current exciting research and industrial innovation with an extraordinary potential for a huge impact on scientific discoveries, medicine, engineering, business models, and society itself. Renowned academics and industry pioneers will lecture and share their views with the audience.

Most subareas of high performance computing will be displayed, from foundations, infrastructure and management to applications. Major challenges in the field will be identified through 2 keynote lectures, 24 five-hour and fifteen-minute courses, and 1 round table, which will tackle the most active and promising topics. The organizers are convinced that outstanding speakers will attract the brightest and most motivated students. Interaction will be a main component of the event.

An open session will give participants the opportunity to present their own work in progress in 5 minutes. Moreover, there will be two special sessions with industrial and recruitment profiles.

ADDRESSED TO:

Master students, PhD students, postdocs, and industry practitioners will be typical profiles of participants. However, there are no formal pre-requisites for attendance in terms of academic degrees. Since there will be a variety of levels, specific knowledge background may be assumed for some of the courses. Overall, HighPer 2018 is addressed to students, researchers and practitioners who want to keep themselves updated about recent developments and future trends. All will surely find it fruitful to listen and discuss with major researchers, industry leaders and innovators.

The selection of up to 8 courses requested in the registration template is only tentative and non-binding. For logistic reasons, it will be helpful to have an estimation of the respective demand for each course. During the event, participants will be free to attend the courses they wish.

The registration period will be closed and the on-line registration facility disabled when the capacity of the venue is exhausted. It is highly recommended to register prior to the event.

Summer School 'Infant Studies on Language Development in Europe' ISOLDE, Potsdam, Germany, June 11-15, 2018

Infant Studies on LanguageDevelopment in Europe


We would like to draw your attention to the 3rd Summer School ISOLDE (Infant Studies on Language Development in Europe) that will take place from 11 to 15 of June 2018 in Potsdam/Germany.

This summer school is specifically organised to bring together Pre- and Post-docs working on infant language acquisition in Europe.


Six courses (two on methods) will be taught by experts in the field of infant language acquisition:

UNILOG is a logic event in a broad sense. It gathers people from many horizons

(philosophy, mathematics, linguistics, computer science, semiotics, cognitive science ...)

and the idea is to promote interaction between all these people.


The previous edition in Istanbul gathered more than 400 logicians from

about 50 different countries.

For the 6th edition we will follow a similar format:

- A school of logic of 5 days with 30 tutorials

- A congress of 6 days with about 30 sessions/workshops

- Award of Logic Prizes from about 10 countries

- A secret speaker (speaker whose identity is revealed only at the time

of her / its / his speech).


Vichy is a charming relaxing thermal city at the middle of France,

developed by Napoleon III in the second half of the 19th century, who in

particular created beautiful parks with species of trees from all over

the world. Vichy, in the Duchy of Bourbon, a region full of castles,

is a small city, where it is possible to go everywhere just by walking.

The event will take place at the university campus nearby the Celestins spring,

the banks of the Allier river (where it is possible to swim) and the city center.

June is a very nice time to be in Vichy with lots of animations,

including on June 21 a very lively musical day celebrating summertime.

The University of Tübingen is pleased to host the LEAD Summer School in Second Language Acquisition in July 2018. The LEAD Summer School is a major international event that draws together leading researchers and students from a variety of disciplines (theoretical and applied linguistics, psychology, education, language testing) in order to discuss current trends and future directions in second language research.


The Summer School is an initiative of the Heritage Language Consortium, a new strategic partnership between Tübingen University, Lancaster University, the University of Lisbon, the University of Minho, NOVA University of Lisbon, the University of Porto, and the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


The event free is offered free of charge but prior registration is required. Registration includes coffee breaks, a welcome reception (Monday) light lunch during Wednesday’s poster session, and a Stocherkahn trip up the Neckar river. However, delegates have to pay for travel/accommodation expenses and make their own arrangements for lunch (except Wednesday).

Aan de Faculteit Letteren van de KU Leuven is er een voltijdse vacature binnen het zelfstandig academisch personeel in het domein van de bedrijfscommunicatie. We zoeken internationaal georiënteerde kandidaten met uitstekende onderwijscompetenties en een excellent onderzoeksdossier.

Opdracht


Onderzoek

Uw opdracht bestaat uit academisch onderzoek, onderwijs en dienstverlening op het raakvlak van bedrijfscommunicatie en sociolinguïstiek.

U ontwikkelt een coherent onderzoeksprogramma van internationaal niveau op het raakvlak van bedrijfscommunicatie en sociolinguïstiek (in de meest brede zin). U treedt toe tot de onderzoeksgroep van de Onderzoekseenheid Taalkunde waar uw onderzoek de sterkste affiniteit mee heeft. U neemt initiatieven om competitieve financiering te verwerven en werkt actief mee aan de uitbouw van toekomstige onderzoeksprojecten.

Onderwijs

U verzorgt kwalitatief hoogstaand onderwijs in de opleidingen Bedrijfscommunicatie en Taal- en Letterkunde, met een duidelijk engagement voor de kwaliteit van de opleiding als geheel.


De onderwijsopdracht omvat een geheel van colleges en taken waartoe bij aanvang behoren:

- een college Bedrijfscommunicatie in de praktijk

- een college Taalkundige aspecten van communicatietechnieken en -strategieën

- een college Sociolinguïstiek

- de begeleiding van stages in de master Bedrijfscommunicatie

- de begeleiding van bachelor- en masterproeven.


Voor opleidingsonderdelen waarvoor dat een meerwaarde biedt, gaat u actief op zoek naar interactie met het relevante werkveld.

Uw onderwijsopdracht is in eerste instantie verbonden aan de Campus Leuven van de faculteit, maar u bent ertoe bereid om, waar dat opportuun wordt geacht, in de toekomst onderwijsopdrachten te verzorgen op andere campussen van de faculteit, en in aan bovengenoemde opleidingen gerelateerde onderwijsprogramma’s.

Uw onderwijs moet beantwoorden aan de eisen van een academische opleiding wat betreft niveau, oriëntatie en academisch gehalte. U ontwikkelt uw onderwijsaanpak overeenkomstig de onderwijsvisie van de KU Leuven, en maakt gebruik van de mogelijkheden voor onderwijskundige professionalisering die de faculteit en de universiteit aanbieden.


Dienstverlening

U bent ertoe bereid interne bestuurlijke, organisatorische en administratieve taken op te nemen, m.n. in een leidende rol binnen de master in de Bedrijfscommunicatie, en mee te werken aan het versterken van de banden tussen de opleiding en het werkveld.

Vereisten

U hebt een diploma van doctor in de taalkunde (of een equivalent relevant diploma).

U bezit voortreffelijke didactische kwaliteiten voor het academisch onderwijs en kunt een uitstekend onderzoeksdossier voorleggen in het domein van de bedrijfscommunicatie en/of de sociolinguïstiek. De onderzoekskwaliteit blijkt uit internationale publicaties van hoog niveau.

U beschikt over organisatorische vaardigheden en bent collegiaal ingesteld.

Bij uw sollicitatie voegt u een uitgewerkt onderzoeksvoorstel voor de komende jaren (maximum twee pagina's) en een visietekst over het onderwijs (maximum twee pagina's) in het Nederlands of in het Engels.

De bestuurstaal van de KU Leuven is het Nederlands. Als u bij aanwerving geen of onvoldoende Nederlands kent, voorziet de KU Leuven in een opleidingsaanbod dat u moet toelaten om deel te nemen aan bestuursvergaderingen.

Vooraleer u in het Nederlands of het Engels doceert, wordt u de gelegenheid geboden om de daartoe vereiste kennis van het Nederlands of respectievelijk het Engels te verwerven.


Aanbod

Afhankelijk van uw dossier en uw kwalificaties wordt u aangesteld of benoemd in een van de graden van het zelfstandig academisch personeel (zonder dat dit uw eindgraad hoeft te zijn): docent, hoofddocent, hoogleraar, of gewoon hoogleraar. Junior onderzoekers worden in principe aangesteld als tenure track-docent voor een periode van 5 jaar; nadien worden ze, bij positieve beoordeling, benoemd als hoofddocent.

Werkzaamheden


Als universitair docent ontwikkelt en verzorgt u onderwijs op het terrein van zowel de Nederlandstalige als Engelstalige bachelor en masteropleidingen Communicatie- en informatiewetenschappen. U verzorgt cursussen en begeleidt studenten bij stages, werkstukken en scripties. Inhoudelijk levert u een bijdrage aan -bij voorkeur- twee van de volgende domeinen: communicatie in organisaties, taal en communicatie, boodschapkenmerken en Duitse en/of Engelse taal en cultuur. Ook levert u een bijdrage aan het onderwijs op het gebied van academische vaardigheden en methoden en technieken van onderzoek.

Daarnaast verricht u wetenschappelijk onderzoek op het gebied van de Communicatie- en informatiewetenschappen. Ook werft u extern gefinancierde onderzoeksopdrachten en schrijft u projectvoorstellen. Verder neemt u deel of geeft u leiding aan werkgroepen, commissies en/of projectgroepen binnen de afdeling, opleiding of faculteit.


Werkomgeving


De Faculteit der Letteren telt ruim zeshonderd medewerkers die zich bezighouden met onderwijs en onderzoek op het gebied van geschiedenis en kunst, talen en culturen, taalwetenschap en communicatie- en informatiewetenschappen, of met de ondersteuning van dit onderwijs en onderzoek. Het onderzoek wordt verricht binnen één van de twee facultaire onderzoeksinstituten: het Centre for Language Studies (CLS) waaronder het onderzoek van Communicatie- en informatiewetenschappen valt en Historical, Literary and Cultural Studies (HLCS). De faculteit verzorgt voor ongeveer vierentwintighonderd studenten opleidingen, verdeeld over tien afdelingen.


Wij verwachten

•u bent gepromoveerd in een relevante discipline, bij voorkeur communicatie- en informatiewetenschappen of taalbeheersing;

•u bent deskundig op het domein van de informatie- en communicatiewetenschappen, wat blijkt uit relevante publicaties en congrespresentaties;

•u bent voor wat betreft het onderwijs inzetbaar op meerdere van de genoemde domeinen;

•u heeft een uitstekende beheersing van de Engelse taal en beschikt over een Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) of bent bereid deze binnen afzienbare tijd te behalen;

•u beheerst het Nederlands ten minste op B2-niveau indien de Nederlandse taal niet uw moedertaal is;

•u beschikt over ervaring in het geven van universitair onderwijs op diverse niveaus en denkt waar nodig actief mee over onderwijsvernieuwing;

•u bent in het bezit van de Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs (BKO), of bereid deze binnen afzienbare tijd te behalen;

•u heeft ervaring met scriptiebegeleiding, zowel op bachelor- als masterniveau;

Wij bieden

The Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences seeks to appoint a full professor or associate professor ‘Digital Health Communication’, with the Department of Communication and Cognition. As a position created in the context of the Philip Eijlander Diversity Program this position is open to women only.


‘Digital Health Communication’


We are looking for a colleague with an excellent research background in the field of health communication, with a particular interest in the use of new media or data science for health applications. The new colleague will contribute to undergraduate and graduate programs Communication and Information Sciences. Potential courses include: Psychology of Health Communication, eHealth and Technology, or Medical Information. The research of the department explores cognitive and social aspects of human communication through a multidisciplinary approach. Topics for research might include (but are not limited to):

the analysis, design and evaluation of health communication applications or virtual coaches which encourage life style changes (quitting smoking, starting to exercise, etc.);

analysis of user generated health content (blogs, social media);

personalised health information presentation;

detection of important episodes in medical data as a trigger for communicative interventions;

analysis and support of communicative skills of health professionals;

methods to study and predict therapy compliance, and to improve low compliance.


With her research and teaching, the candidate will participate in ‘Enhancing Health and Wellbeing’, one of the research and impact themes of Tilburg University. The specific name of the position can be adjusted, depending on the expertise and preferences of the candidate to be appointed.

Employment terms and conditions

Depending on experience, record, and current position, the appointment may be for five years with the perspective of appointment for an indefinite period thereafter, or immediately for an indefinite period. We look for a full time or almost fulltime colleague (0.8 – 1.0 fte). The selected candidate will be ranked in the Dutch university employment system as associate professor (UHD). The gross salary depends on qualifications and experience, and ranges between € 4,815.- and € 6,438.- per month for a full time employment of 38 hours per week for an associate professor, and between € 5,334.- and € 7,766.- for a full professor. The salary is supplemented with an annual holiday pay and an end-of-year bonus. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a temporary tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The university will apply for such an allowance on their behalf. In the context of the Philip Eijlander Diversity Program, the candidate will have a start-up research grant of 10.000 euro. If the candidate does not speak Dutch yet, a sufficient passive understanding of Dutch will have to be acquired within two year after appointment. Het departement Talen, Literatuur en Communicatie heeft per 1 juli 2018 een vacature voor een talentvolle universitair hoofddocent met expertise op het terrein van taal en communicatie. Dit vakgebied houdt zich bezig met de beschrijving en verklaring van taalgebruik in verschillende contexten, en van de cognitieve, affectieve en sociale gevolgen daarvan. De maatschappelijke doelstelling ligt op het ontwikkelen van ‘evidence-based’ adviezen voor de optimalisering van communicatie en het taalonderwijs.


Van de nieuwe collega wordt een brede oriëntatie en inzetbaarheid verwacht, met name in de bacheloropleiding Communicatie- en Informatiewetenschappen (CIW). Daarnaast is inzet in de bacheloropleiding Nederlandse Taal & Cultuur mogelijk en in één of meer van de volgende masterprogramma’s: Communicatie in Organisaties, Neerlandistiek, en de research master Linguistics.


Het onderzoek wordt ondergebracht in het Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS (UiL-OTS) binnen de onderzoeksgroep Language and Communication. Een belangrijke taak zal bestaan uit het ontplooien van initiatieven voor de werving van extern gefinancierd onderzoek. De positie kent een verdeling van 60% onderwijs en 40% onderzoek.


Uw werkzaamheden bestaan uit:

•zelfstandig verrichten van onderzoek op het terrein van taal en communicatie, resulterend in publicaties in vooraanstaande internationale tijdschriften;

•initiatief nemen tot verwerving van 2e en 3e geldstroomfinanciering;

•initiatief nemen tot kennisvalorisatie;

•verzorgen van cursorisch onderwijs binnen de genoemde bachelor- en masteropleidingen;

•begeleiden van bachelor- en masterscripties;

•uitvoeren van diverse management- en bestuurstaken.


Profiel

U beschikt over het volgende profiel:

•voltooide relevante promotie op het gebied van taalgebruik, communicatie of verwante thematieken;

•ruime onderzoekservaring en uitstekende onderzoekskwaliteiten, blijkend uit publicaties in gerenommeerde internationale tijdschriften en/of bij gerenommeerde uitgevers en/of uit een seniorkwalificatie onderzoek;

•gezien de huidige samenstelling van de staf en de onderzoeksthema’s die worden bestreken, strekt specialisatie op één van de volgende thema’s tot aanbeveling: communicatie-onderzoek naar het verband tussen tekstkenmerken en cognitieve processen van lezen en schrijven, communicatieve benaderingen van kwantitatieve onderzoeksinstrumenten (zoals vragenlijsten) en methodologie, communicatieve benaderingen van taalgebruik in social media, waaronder computationele en automatische analyses;

•ervaring met werving van 2e en/of 3e geldstroomfinanciering;

•ruime onderwijservaring op universitair niveau en aantoonbare didactische bekwaamheid, bijvoorbeeld blijkend uit een seniorkwalificatie onderwijs;

•aantoonbare bestuurlijke en/of managementervaring;

•teamgeest en aantoonbaar vermogen tot samenwerken;

•brede inzetbaarheid in het onderwijs en in een of meer van de interdisciplinaire samenwerkingsverbanden van de Universiteit Utrecht (strategische thema’s, focusgebieden).


Aanbod


Wij bieden een 1,0 fte aanstelling voor een jaar. Na een positieve evaluatie is er zicht op een verlenging van de aanstelling voor onbepaalde tijd. Op basis van universitaire regelingen (Functies, Loopbanen en Waardering (FLOW)) wordt u geacht de seniorkwalificatie onderwijs te behalen. Afhankelijk van kennis en ervaring is het maandelijkse bruto salaris minimaal € 4.815,- en maximaal € 6.438,- (schaal 13/14 van de cao voor Nederlandse universiteiten), gebaseerd op een fulltime dienstverband. U ontvangt daarnaast 8% vakantiegeld en een eindejaarsuitkering van 8,3%. OVER DE UGENT

OPDRACHT

In de Faculteit Letteren en Wijsbegeerte is vanaf 1 oktober 2018 een voltijds ambt van docent in het tenure track stelsel, hoofddocent of hoogleraar te begeven binnen de vakgroep Vertalen, Tolken en Communicatie, voor een opdracht die academisch onderwijs, wetenschappelijk onderzoek en wetenschappelijke dienstverlening omvat in het vakgebied Toegepaste Taalkunde (Duits).


Academisch onderwijs

U doceert verschillende opleidingsonderdelen in het domein van Toegepaste Taalkunde (Duits).


Wetenschappelijk onderzoek

U bouwt onderzoek uit in het domein van meertalige communicatie, vertaal- en tolkonderzoek, (ver)taaldidactiek of taaltechnologie toegepast op het Duits.


Wetenschappelijke dienstverlening

U werkt mee aan de interne en externe dienstverlening van de vakgroep Vertalen, Tolken en Communicatie.


PROFIEL


Kennis/ervaring

U heeft reeds hoogstaand wetenschappelijk onderzoek verricht in het vakgebied Toegepaste Taalkunde zoals blijkt uit publicaties in kwaliteitsvolle wetenschappelijke tijdschriften en boeken met peer review;

U hebt aantoonbare expertise in een van de onderzoeksdomeinen van de vakgroep, nl. meertalige communicatie, vertaal- en tolkonderzoek, (ver)taaldidactiek of taaltechnologie toegepast op het Duits;

U bent in staat om wetenschappelijk onderzoek te initiëren en te begeleiden en hiervoor de nodige fondsen te verzamelen;

U beschikt over didactische vaardigheden die gericht zijn op het ontwikkelen en realiseren van academische competenties bij universiteitsstudenten;

U kunt aantoonbare ervaring voorleggen met het academisch onderwijs in en van het Duits;

Strekken tot aanbeveling : Internationale mobiliteit o.m. door onderzoekverblijven in onderzoeksinstellingen extern aan de instelling waaraan de hoogste academische graad werd behaald;

Positief geëvalueerde ervaring met verstrekt en/of georganiseerd onderwijs op academisch niveau;

Toelatingsvoorwaarden

U bent houder van een diploma van doctor op proefschrift of van een diploma of certificaat dat als gelijkwaardig wordt erkend (artikel V.20 Codex Hoger Onderwijs).

Bij beoordeling van een buitenlands (niet-EU) diploma kan alsnog een gelijkwaardigheidsattest moeten worden aangevraagd bij NARIC; wij raden u aan – in voorkomend geval – de erkenningsprocedure bij NARIC zo spoedig als mogelijk op te starten. U dient uiterlijk op de datum van aanstelling over deze erkenning te beschikken.


U beschikt over minstens twee jaar postdoctorale ervaring 1 oktober 2018. De termijn van 2 jaar wordt bepaald op basis van de datum vermeld op het hierboven gevraagde diploma.


AANSTELLINGSINFORMATIE

Afhankelijk van het specifieke profiel van de geselecteerde kandidaat wordt de graad van docent (tenure track), hoofddocent of hoogleraar toegekend. Dit wordt beslist door het Universiteitsbestuur op voordracht van de Faculteitsraad.


Indien docent TT:

We bieden u een aanstelling in tijdelijk dienstverband in een Tenure Trackstelsel voor een termijn van vijf jaar. Bij gunstige beoordeling door het universiteitsbestuur wordt het mandaat omgezet in een vaste benoeming in de graad van hoofddocent.

Indien u reeds eenbetrekking als ZAP-lid of een gelijkwaardige functie in een andere universiteit of instelling voor onderzoek uitoefent, kan u onmiddellijk worden benoemd in de graad van docent, onverminderd de mogelijkheid die geboden wordt voor een tijdelijke aanstelling in artikel V.28 van de Codex Hoger Onderwijs.

Indien hoofddocent of hoogleraar:

We bieden u een benoeming in vast dienstverband in de aanvangsgraad van hoofddocent of hoogleraar, onverminderd de mogelijkheid die geboden wordt voor een tijdelijke aanstelling in artikel V.28 van de Codex Hoger Onderwijs.

De indiensttreding kan ten vroegste vanaf 1 oktober 2018.


ONS AANBOD

Op basis van deze afweging wordt een ‘shortlist’ van relevante kandidaten opgemaakt die voor verdere selectie (interview, eventueel presentatie of proefles,… ) zullen worden uitgenodigd. Hierna maakt de beoordelingscommissie een rangschikking op van de geschikte kandidaten en legt deze ter advies voor aan de faculteitsraad. Het advies van de faculteitsraad zal aan het Universiteitsbestuur voor goedkeuring worden voorgedragen.

Kandidaten wordt gevraagd hun top 5 belangrijkste publicaties of andere academische verwezenlijkingen met de meeste impact verder toe te lichten. Zo kan de kandidaat naast wetenschappelijke publicaties, ook verdiensten voorleggen als kennisoverdracht door wetenschapsvulgarisatie, maatschappelijke valorisatie, public awareness, seminaries of presentaties op conferenties. Deze competenties worden meegewogen in de beoordeling van de kandidaten.


De beoordeling van de gevraagde internationale mobiliteit is breed en gebeurt mede vanuit genderperspectief waarbij naast lange verblijven in het buitenland ook andere vormen van internationalisering worden in rekening gebracht.


Zwangerschapsverlof, langdurig ziekteverlof, ouderschapsverlof, zorgverlof of andere afwezigheden worden in rekening gebracht bij het beoordelen van de beschikbare tijd voor het realiseren van wetenschappelijke output.

Uw opdracht


U bent verantwoordelijk voor onderzoeksgebaseerd onderwijs en scriptiebegeleiding in de master en het schakelprogramma Meertalige Professionele Communicatie. U doceert met name opleidingsonderdelen in het domein van het Communicatieonderzoek, Professioneel en Academisch schrijven. Een deel van dit onderwijs gebeurt in de vorm van co-teaching en/of blended learning. Daarnaast vormt de begeleiding van scriptiestudenten een belangrijk onderdeel van uw opdracht.

U bouwt het wetenschappelijk onderzoek uit in het domein van de Professionele en Academische Communicatie:

u verwerft en beheert (externe) onderzoeksfondsen (nationaal en internationaal);

Job description

You will be participating in the project Time in Translation: a semantics of the Perfect (TinT). This project is funded by NWO, by way of a Vrije Competitie project awarded to Prof. dr. Henriëtte de Swart and dr. Bert Le Bruyn at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. The project aims to develop the meaning of the present perfect. We will collect data from 5 languages (Dutch, English, German, French, Spanish) in parallel corpora, and analyse perfect use in relation to other verbal tense forms both at the sentence and at the discourse level. Translation experiments will be used to check the space of variation in choosing one form over another.

TinT offers two PhD and one postdoc position. One PhD position has already been filled, so we are currently searching to hire a PhD candidate and a Post-Doc for the following subprojects:

Perfect use in discourse: from conversation to literary texts (PhD)

Truth-conditional and dynamic semantics of the perfect (Post-Doc)

The PhD candidate will focus on the discourse role of the perfect in conversation and literary texts and will be responsible for developing an analysis of non-narrative tense use. Data collection and translation experiments will be carried out in close collaboration with the other PhD and the Post-Doc.

The Post-Doc is the theoretical driving force of the project and will lay the groundwork for the project’s semantic analyses of the Perfect – both truth-conditional and dynamic. S/he will closely collaborate with the PhD candidates and the PIs.

The PhD candidate and the postdoctoral researcher will of course have the opportunity to fill in the details of these projects or expand them, based on their expertise, the data they gather and their own research ideas, in consultation with the PIs.


Tasks for the PhD candidate will include:

Completion and defence of a PhD thesis within four years;

Carrying out corpus research and translation experiments, in agreement with the supervisors and division of labour within the team;

Regular presentation of intermediate research results at workshops and conferences;

Publication of at least two peer-reviewed articles, partly in collaboration with other project members;

Co-organization of workshops and conferences;

Participation in training programmes and expert meetings scheduled for the project;

Participation in training programmes scheduled for the Research Institute, Graduate School and the National Research School.

Teaching


Tasks for the Post-Doc will include:

Collaboration with the PhDs and the PIs;

Presentations at workshops and conferences;

Publication of four peer-reviewed articles, partly in collaboration with other project members;

Requirements for the PhD candidate:

A (soon to be completed) (research) Master’s degree in linguistics, with a focus on semantics and pragmatics; prior experience with corpus research and/or experiments welcome;

An outstanding record of work in the Master's degree;

Excellent English oral proficiency, academic writing and presentation skills;

Fluency in at least two languages of the project besides English (Dutch, German, French, Spanish);

Excellent organizational, social and communication skills.


Offer

The successful PhD candidate will be appointed on a fixed-term full-time basis (38 hours per week/1,0 FTE), starting 1 June 2018 or soon thereafter. The appointment is initially for a period of 18 months. Upon good performance and a positive evaluation, the contract will be extended for the remaining period of 30 months (4 years in total). The gross monthly salary starts at € 2,222.- in the first year (scale P of the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities).

The successful postdoc candidate will be appointed on a fixed-term full-time basis (38 hours per week/0,8 FTE), starting 1 June 2018 or soon thereafter. The appointment is for a period of 36 months, with a one-year initial trial period. The gross monthly salary is based on scale 10 (Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities).

Utrecht University offers a pension scheme, a holiday allowance of 8% per year, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and flexible employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities.

FG-2018 is the 23rd conference on Formal Grammar, to be held in conjunction with the European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information which, in 2018, will take place in Sofia, Bulgaria.


Previous Formal Grammar meetings were held in Barcelona (1995), Prague (1996), Aix-en-Provence (1997), Saarbrücken (1998), Utrecht (1999), Helsinki (2001), Trento (2002), Vienna (2003), Nancy (2004), Edinburgh (2005), Malaga (2006), Dublin (2007), Hamburg (2008), Bordeaux (2009), Copenhagen (2010), Ljubljana (2011), Opole (2012), Düsseldorf (2013), Tübingen (2014), Barcelona (2015), Bozen-Bolzano (2016), and Toulouse (2017).


AIMS AND SCOPE


FG provides a forum for the presentation of new and original research on formal grammar, mathematical linguistics and the application of formal and mathematical methods to the study of natural language.

Themes of interest include, but are not limited to,

+ model-theoretic and proof-theoretic methods in linguistics; logical

WoLLIC is an annual international forum on inter-disciplinary research involving formal logic, computing and programming theory, and natural language and reasoning. Each meeting includes invited talks and tutorials as well as contributed papers. The twenty-fifth WoLLIC will be held at the Departamento de Matemáticas of the Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá, Colombia, from July 24th to 27th, 2018. It is sponsored by the Association for Symbolic Logic (ASL), the Interest Group in Pure and Applied Logics (IGPL), the The Association for Logic, Language and Information (FoLLI), the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS), the European Association for Computer Science Logic (EACSL), ACM Special Interest Group on Logic and Computation (ACM-SIGLOG) (TBC), the Sociedade Brasileira de Computação (SBC), and the Sociedade Brasileira de Lógica (SBL).


PAPER SUBMISSION

Contributions are invited on all pertinent subjects, with particular interest in cross-disciplinary topics. Typical but not exclusive areas of interest are: foundations of computing and programming; novel computation models and paradigms; broad notions of proof and belief; proof mining, type theory, effective learnability; formal methods in software and hardware development; logical approach to natural language and reasoning; logics of programs, actions and resources; foundational aspects of information organization, search, flow, sharing, and protection; foundations of mathematics; philosophy of mathematics; philosophical logic; philosophy of language. Proposed contributions should be in English, and consist of a scholarly exposition accessible to the non-specialist, including motivation, background, and comparison with related works. Articles should be written in the LaTeX format of LNCS by Springer (see authors instructions at http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0). They must not exceed 12 pages, with up to 5 additional pages for references and technical appendices. The paper's main results must not be published or submitted for publication in refereed venues, including journals and other scientific meetings. It is expected that each accepted paper be presented at the meeting by one of its authors. (At least one author is required to pay the registration fee before granting that the paper will be published in the proceedings.) SIGDIAL will be co-located with ACL 2018 which will be held July 15-20 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The SIGDIAL venue provides a regular forum for the presentation of cutting edge research in discourse and dialogue to both academic and industry researchers. Continuing with a series of eighteen successful previous meetings, this conference spans the research interest areas of discourse and dialogue. The conference is sponsored by the SIGDIAL organization, which serves as the Special Interest Group in discourse and dialogue for both ACL and ISCA.

SUBMISSIONS

The program committee welcomes the submission of long papers, short papers and demo descriptions. Papers submitted as long papers may be accepted as long papers for oral presentation or long papers for poster presentation. Accepted short papers will be presented as posters.

• Long papers must be no longer than eight pages, including title, text, figures and tables. An unlimited number of pages are allowed for references. Two additional pages are allowed for example discourses or dialogues and algorithms.

• Short papers should be no longer than four pages including title, text, figures and tables. An unlimited number of pages are allowed for references. One additional page is allowed for example discourses or dialogues and algorithms.

• Demo descriptions should be no longer than four pages including title, text, examples, figures, tables and references. A separate one-page document should be provided to the program co-chairs for demo descriptions, specifying furniture and equipment needed for the demo.

Authors are encouraged to also submit additional accompanying materials such as corpora (or corpus examples), demo code, videos, sound files, etc.

Multiple Submissions: Papers that have been or will be submitted to other meetings or publications must provide this information (see submission link). SIGDIAL 2018 cannot accept work for publication or presentation that will be (or has been) published elsewhere. Any questions regarding submissions can be sent to program-chairs[at]sigdial.org.

Blind Review: Building on last year’s move to anonymous long and short paper submissions, SIGDIAL 2018 will follow the new ACL policies for preserving the

integrity of double blind review (see author guidelines). Unlike long and short papers, demo descriptions will not be anonymous. Demo descriptions should include the authors’ names and affiliations, and self-references are allowed.

Submission Format

All long, short, and demonstration submissions must follow the two-column ACL 2018 format. Authors are expected to use the ACL LaTeX style template or Microsoft Word style template from the ACL 2018 conference. Submissions must conform to the official ACL 2018 style guidelines, which are contained in these templates. Submissions must be electronic, in PDF format.

IMPORTANT NOTE: ADOPTION OF ACL 2018 AUTHOR GUIDELINES

As noted above, SIGDIAL 2018 is adopting the new ACL guidelines for submission and citation for long and short papers. Long and short papers that do not conform to the following guidelines1 will be rejected without review.

Preserving Double Blind Review

The following rules and guidelines are meant to protect the integrity of double-blind review and ensure that submissions are reviewed fairly. The rules make reference to the anonymity period, which runs from 1 month before the submission deadline up to the date when your paper is either accepted, rejected, or withdrawn.

• You may not make a non-anonymized version of your paper available online to the general community (for example, via a preprint server) during the anonymity period. By a version of a paper we understand another paper having essentially the same scientific content but possibly differing in minor details (including title and structure) and/or in length (e.g., an abstract is a version of the paper that it summarizes).

• If you have posted a non-anonymized version of your paper online before the start of the anonymity period, you may submit an anonymized version to the conference. The submitted version must not refer to the non-anonymized version, and you must inform the program chair(s) that a non-anonymized version exists. You may not update the non-anonymized version during the anonymity period, and we ask you not to advertise it on social media or take other actions that would further compromise double-blind reviewing during the anonymity period.

• Note that, while you are not prohibited from making a non-anonymous version available online before the start of the anonymity period, this does make double-blind reviewing more difficult to maintain, and we therefore encourage you to wait until the end of the anonymity period if possible.

Citation and Comparison

If you are aware of previous research that appears sound and is relevant to your work, you should cite it even if it has not been peer-reviewed, and certainly if it influenced your own work. However, refereed publications take priority over unpublished work reported in preprints. Specifically:

• You are expected to cite all refereed publications relevant to your submission, but you may be excused for not knowing about all unpublished work (especially work that has been recently posted and/or is not widely cited).

• In cases where a preprint has been superseded by a refereed publication, the refereed publication should be cited in addition to or instead of the preprint version.

Papers (whether refereed or not) appearing less than 3 months before the submission deadline are considered contemporaneous to your submission, and you are therefore not obliged to make detailed comparisons that require additional experimentation and/or in-depth analysis.

MENTORING

Submissions with innovative core ideas that may be in need of language (English) or organizational assistance will be flagged for "mentoring" and accepted with recommendation to revise with a mentor. The Center for Theoretical Linguistics at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Spanish network on Meaning and Grammar are pleased to announce the 23rd Sinn und Bedeutung (SuB) conference, taking place on September 5-7, 2018. SuB has in recent years emerged as one of the biggest venues for formal semantics and pragmatics representing the full breadth of the field, and we aim to maintain this tradition.

We invite abstract submissions on topics pertaining to natural language semantics, pragmatics, lexical semantics, the syntax-semantics interface, psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic studies related to meaning, and the philosophy of language.

All sessions of SuB will take place at the Bellaterra campus of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, which is easy to reach by train from the center of Barcelona.

Talks will be 45 (35+10) minutes in length. There will also be a poster session. Poster presenters will have the opportunity to give short ‘lightning talks’ to introduce their topic to the audience.

Abstracts should contain original research that, at the time of submission, has neither been published nor accepted for publication. One person can submit at most one abstract as sole author and one as co-author, or two co-authored abstracts. Authors will be asked to specify at the time of submission whether they wish their abstract to be considered for a talk and/or a poster.

Submissions should be anonymous and should not reveal the identities of the authors in any form. Abstracts must not exceed two pages (letter size or A4 paper, 2.5cm or 1 inch margins on all sides, 12 point font), including examples and references. FORMAT OF THE CONFERENCE


The conference program will include presentation of invited papers, oral presentations, and poster/demonstration sessions. Papers will be presented in plenary or topic oriented sessions.


The Best Paper and Best Student Paper Awards will be selected by the Programme Committee and supported with a total prize of EUR 1000 from Springer.


Social events including a trip in the vicinity of Brno will allow for additional informal interactions.


The registration fee is the same as in 2016:


Student: Early payment (by May 31) - 10,000 CZK (approx. EUR 395)

Full participant: Early payment (by May 31) - 12,000 CZK (approx. EUR 475)


The fee has a "all in one" form, to keep equality between participants.



SUBMISSION OF PAPERS


Authors are invited to submit a full paper not exceeding 8 pages formatted in the LNCS style (see below). Those accepted will be presented either orally or as posters. The decision about the presentation format will be based on the recommendation of the reviewers. The authors are asked to submit their papers using the on-line form accessible from the conference website.


Papers submitted to TSD 2018 must not be under review by any other conference or publication during the TSD review cycle, and must not be previously published or accepted for publication elsewhere.


As reviewing will be blind, the paper should not include the authors'

names and affiliations. Furthermore, self-references that reveal the author's identity, e.g., "We previously showed (Smith, 1991) ...", should be avoided. Instead, use citations such as "Smith previously showed (Smith, 1991) ...". Papers that do not conform to the requirements above are subject to be rejected without review.


The authors are strongly encouraged to write their papers in TeX or LaTeX formats. These formats are necessary for the final versions of the papers that will be published in the Springer Lecture Notes.

Authors using a WORD compatible software for the final version must use the LNCS template for WORD and within the submit process ask the Proceedings Editors to convert the paper to LaTeX format. For this service a service-and-license fee of CZK 2000 will be levied automatically.


The paper format for review has to be in the PDF format with all required fonts included. Upon notification of acceptance, presenters will receive further information on submitting their camera-ready and electronic sources (for detailed instructions on the final paper format see http://www.springer.com/gp/computer-science/lncs/conference-proceedings-guidelines,

Authors are also invited to present actual projects, developed software or interesting material relevant to the topics of the conference. The presenters of demonstrations should provide an abstract not exceeding one page. The demonstration abstracts will not appear in the conference proceedings.

FORMAT OF THE CONFERENCE


The conference program will include presentation of invited papers, oral presentations, and poster/demonstration sessions. Papers will be presented in plenary or topic oriented sessions.


The Best Paper and Best Student Paper Awards will be selected by the Programme Committee and supported with a total prize of EUR 1000 from Springer.


Social events including a trip in the vicinity of Brno will allow for additional informal interactions.


The registration fee is the same as in 2016:


Student: Early payment (by May 31) - 10,000 CZK (approx. EUR 395)

Full participant: Early payment (by May 31) - 12,000 CZK (approx. EUR 475)


The fee has a "all in one" form, to keep equality between participants.



SUBMISSION OF PAPERS


Authors are invited to submit a full paper not exceeding 8 pages formatted in the LNCS style (see below). Those accepted will be presented either orally or as posters. The decision about the presentation format will be based on the recommendation of the reviewers. The authors are asked to submit their papers using the on-line form accessible from the conference website.


Papers submitted to TSD 2018 must not be under review by any other conference or publication during the TSD review cycle, and must not be previously published or accepted for publication elsewhere.


As reviewing will be blind, the paper should not include the authors'

names and affiliations. Furthermore, self-references that reveal the author's identity, e.g., "We previously showed (Smith, 1991) ...", should be avoided. Instead, use citations such as "Smith previously showed (Smith, 1991) ...". Papers that do not conform to the requirements above are subject to be rejected without review.


The authors are strongly encouraged to write their papers in TeX or LaTeX formats. These formats are necessary for the final versions of the papers that will be published in the Springer Lecture Notes.

Authors using a WORD compatible software for the final version must use the LNCS template for WORD and within the submit process ask the Proceedings Editors to convert the paper to LaTeX format. For this service a service-and-license fee of CZK 2000 will be levied automatically.


The paper format for review has to be in the PDF format with all required fonts included. LOCATION


Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic with a population of almost 400.000 and is the country's judiciary and trade-fair center. Brno is the capital of South Moravia, which is located in the south-east part of the Czech Republic and is known for a wide range of cultural, natural, and technical sights.

South Moravia is a traditional wine region. Brno had been a Royal City since 1347 and with its six universities it forms a cultural center of the region.


Brno can be reached easily by direct flights from London and Munich, and by trains or buses from Prague (200 km) or Vienna (130 km).


For the participants with some extra time, nearby places may also be of interest. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION


The BEA Workshop is a leading venue for NLP innovation for educational applications. It is one of the largest one-day workshops in the ACL community. The workshop’s continuous growth illustrates an alignment between societal need and technology advances. NLP capabilities now support an array of learning domain knowledge, including writing, speaking, reading, science, and mathematics, and the related intra- (e.g., self-confidence) and inter-personal (e.g., peer collaboration) domains that support achievement in the learning domains. Within these domains, the community continues to develop and deploy innovative NLP approaches for use in educational settings. In the writing and speech domains, automated writing evaluation (AWE) and speech scoring applications, respectively, are commercially deployed in high-stakes assessment, and instructional contexts (including Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), and K-12 settings). Commercially-deployed plagiarism detection in K-12 and higher education settings is also prevalent. The current educational and assessment landscape in K-12, higher education, and adult learning (in academic and workplace settings) fosters a strong interest in technologies that yield user log data that can be leveraged for analytics that support proficiency measures for complex constructs across learning domains. For writing, there is a focus on innovation that supports writing tasks requiring source use, argumentative discourse, and factual content accuracy. For speech, there is an interest in advancing automated scoring to include the evaluation of discourse and content features in responses to spoken assessments. General advances in speech technology have promoted a renewed interest in spoken dialog and multimodal systems for instruction and assessment, for instance, for workplace interviews and simulated teaching environments. The explosive growth of mobile applications for game-based and simulation applications for instruction and assessment is another place where NLP has begun to play a large role, especially in language learning.


NLP for educational applications has gained visibility outside of the NLP community. First, the Hewlett Foundation reached out to public and private sectors and sponsored two competitions: one for automated essay scoring, and the other for scoring of short response items. The motivation driving these competitions was to engage the larger scientific community in this enterprise. Learning @ Scale is a relatively new venue for NLP research in education. MOOCs now incorporate AWE systems to manage several thousand assignments that may be received during a single MOOC course. MOOCs for Refugees have more recently popped up in response to the current social situations. Courses include language learning, and we can imagine that AWE and other NLP capabilities could support coursework. Another breakthrough for educational applications within the CL community is the presence of a number of shared-task competitions over the last four years – including three shared tasks on grammatical error detection and correction alone. NLP/Education shared tasks, typically in the area of grammar-error detection, have seen new areas of research, such as the “Automated Evaluation of Scientific Writing” at BEA11 and Native Language Identification at BEA12. All of these competitions increased the visibility of, and interest in, our field. In conjunction with the International Joint Conference on Natural Language Processing (ACL-IJCNLP) 2015, the Natural Language Processing Techniques for Educational Applications (NLP-TEA) workshop had a shared task in Chinese error diagnosis, and NLP-TEA had additional shared tasks at the 2016, and a fourth workshop in 2017 co-located with IJCNLP.


The 13th BEA workshop will have oral presentation sessions and a large poster session in order to maximize the amount of original work presented. We expect that the workshop will continue to expose the NLP community to technologies that identify novel opportunities for the use of NLP in education in English, and languages other than English. The workshop will solicit both full papers and short papers for either oral or poster presentation. We will solicit papers that incorporate NLP methods, including, but not limited to: automated scoring of open-ended textual and spoken responses; game-based instruction and assessment; educational data mining; intelligent tutoring; peer review, grammatical error detection; learner cognition; spoken dialog; multimodal applications; tools for teachers and test developers; and use of corpora. Research that incorporates NLP methods for use with mobile and game-based platforms will be of special interest. Specific topics include:

SHARED TASK ON SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION MODELING


Task Description

The workshop will host a Shared Task on Second Language Acquisition Modeling (SLAM), using data provided by Duolingo, a popular free online computer-aided language learning (CALL) platform. Teams will be provided with “traces” of all translation and transcription exercises from 800+ language learners — annotated for errors — spanning their first 100 days of activity on Duolingo. The task is then to predict errors made by a held-out set of 100+ language learners over their first 100 days. There will be four tracks for learners of English, Spanish, French and German. We believe that this task presents several new and interesting dimensions for research in Second Language Acquisition modeling: (1) subjects are mostly beginners in their respective L2s, (2) success will likely require teams to model learning — and forgetting — over time, and (3) teams are encouraged to use features which generalize across a variety of languages (hence 4 tracks).

SHARED TASK ON COMPLEX WORD IDENTIFICATION


Task Description

Over the past decade a number of studies have been published on automatic text simplification (Specia, 2010; Saggion et al. 2015; Štajner, 2015). Text simplification systems aim to facilitate reading comprehension to different target readerships such as foreign language learners, and native speakers with low literacy levels or various kinds of reading impairments. Two main factors that impact reading comprehension addressed by these systems are lexical complexity and syntactic complexity.

Many lexical simplification systems have been proposed up to this date (Glavaš and Štajner, 2015; Paetzold and Specia, 2016). It has been shown that those systems which have a separate complex word identification (CWI) module at the beginning of their pipeline outperform those systems which treat all words as potentially complex (Paetzold and Specia, 2015). Therefore, automatic identification of words that are difficult for a given target population is an important step for building better performing lexical simplification systems. This step is known as complex word identification (CWI) (Shardlow, 2013).


The first shared task on CWI was organized at the SemEval 2016 (Paetzold and Specia, 2016b). It featured 21 teams that competed submitting 42 systems trained to predict whether words in a given context were complex or non-complex for a non-native English speaker. Following the success of the first CWI shared task at SemEval 2016 we propose the organization of a second edition of the challenge at the BEA workshop 2018.


The first edition of the CWI challenge included only English data aimed at non-native English speakers, whereas the second edition will feature a multilingual dataset (Yimam, 2017a, 2017b) and four individual tracks: (1) English monolingual CWI, (2) Spanish monolingual CWI, (3) German monolingual CWI, (4) Multilingual CWI with a French test set.

The Center for Language and Cognition Groningen is pleased to announce the 39th TABU Dag, which will take place at the University of Groningen on June 14th & 15th, 2018. TABU Dag is an annual international broad linguistics conference which offers excellent opportunities to meet other linguists and discuss current research. ::: WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION :::


The main aim of the workshop is to get together linguists, philosophers and cognitive scientists from the two leading research traditions of natural language meaning, often referred to them as "formal semantics" and "conceptual semantics". The workshop provides a platform to investigate and discuss the ways of possible bridges between the two semantic perspectives, and to initiate a deeper conversation and collaboration between them. The workshop intends to gather approaches that show the way how the two perspectives can strengthen each other. The workshop holds 6 high-quality contributed talks, each of 45 minutes including discussions and two invited talks by distinguished researchers working on topics closely related to the main issue of the workshop.

The Young Researchers Group of CLUNL is pleased to announce the XIII Forum for Linguistic Sharing, which will take place on 7 of July 2018, at Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Lisbon, Portugal).

XIII Forum for Linguistic Sharing is integrated into 5th edition of NOVA - Lisbon Summer School in Linguistics and it aims to give the opportunity to young researchers to present and discuss their work in a relaxed and intellectually stimulating environment.

We invite postgraduate (Masters and PhD) students to submit abstracts for oral presentation on any area of linguistics, including: educational linguistics, historical linguistics, language acquisition, lexicography and lexicology, morphology, phonology, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, semantics, syntax, sociolinguistics, terminology and text linguistics. The abstracts should be submitted on https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=13xfpl until 15 April. Accepted papers will be allotted 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Each author may submit at most one abstract of a maximum of 500 words. References should only be in the submitted pdf format. The abstracts can be written in Portuguese or English, which will be the working languages of the conference.

CLARIN ERIC is happy to announce the CLARIN Annual Conference 2018 and calls for the submission of extended abstracts. CLARIN is a research infrastructure that makes digital language resources available to scholars, researchers, students and citizen-scientists from all disciplines, coordinates work on collecting language resources and tools, and offers advanced tools to discover, explore, exploit, annotate, analyse or combine such datasets, wherever they are located.

FORMAT OF THE PROGRAMME SESSIONS


The programme of both the general sessions and the thematic session may include oral presentations, posters, and demos. The type of session for which a paper will be selected will be not be dependent on the quality of the paper but only on the appropriateness of the type of communication (more or less interactive) in view of the content of the paper.


SUBMISSIONS


Proposals for oral or poster presentations (optionally with demo) must be submitted as extended abstracts (length: 3-4 pages A4 including references) in PDF format, in accordance with the template. Authors can freely choose between anonymous and non-anonymous submission.

Extended abstracts should address one or more topics that are relevant to the CLARIN activities, resources, tools or services, and this relevance should be explicitly articulated in the proposal. Contributions addressing desiderata for the CLARIN infrastructure that are currently not in place are also eligible. It is not required that the authors are or have been directly involved in national or cross-national CLARIN projects.


Extended abstracts must be submitted through the EasyChair submission system and will be reviewed by the Programme Committee. All proposals will be reviewed on the basis of both individual criteria and global criteria. The latter include thematic, linguistic and geographical spread. Individual acceptance criteria are the following:

•Appropriateness: the contribution must pertain to the CLARIN infrastructure or be relevant for it (e.g., its use, design, construction, operation, exploitation, illustration of possible applications, etc.). In addition, submissions to the special thematic session will be selected on the basis of their appropriateness to the special topic.

•Soundness and correctness: the content must be technically and factually correct and methods must be scientifically sound, according to best practice, and preferably evaluated.

•Meaningful comparison: the abstract must indicate that the author is aware of alternative approaches, if any, and highlight relevant differences.

•Substance: concrete work and experiences will be preferred over ideas and plans.

•Impact: contributions with a higher impact on the research community and society at large will be preferred over papers with lower impact.

•Clarity: the extended abstract must be informative, clear and understandable for the CLARIN audience.

•Timeliness and novelty: the work must convey relevant new knowledge to the audience at this event.


ATTENDANCE


For each accepted presentation one author will be granted reimbursement of travel costs (up to 220 Euros), free accommodation and meals.


PROCEEDINGS


Accepted submissions will be published in the conference Book of Abstracts. After the conference, the author(s) of accepted submissions will be invited to submit full papers (max. 12 pages) to be reviewed according to the same criteria as the abstracts. Accepted full papers will be published in a digital conference proceedings volume at Linköping University Electronic Press within about 8 months after the conference.

The annual Linguists’ Day of the LSB (Linguistic Society of Belgium) will be organized this year on Friday 25 May 2018 at the Faculté de Philosophie et Lettres of the Université de Liège.

Abstracts

Lectures (20’ presentation + 10’ discussion) can deal with any linguistic topic and can be given in one of the three national languages (Dutch, French, German) or in English. Abstracts (max. 500 words, without references) should clearly indicate the subject, the objectives, the used data and method and the (provisional) results. All abstracts can be submitted until Friday 21 April 2018 to https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=cbl20180. Before 1 May 2018 you will be informed about acceptance of your abstract.

Venue

All activities (lectures and lunch) will take place in the central building (A1) of the City Centre Campus of the University of Liège, located Place du 20 août, 4000 Liège. It is at a walking distance from Liège-Palais train station. TEC operates regular services from Liège-Guillemins train station to the city centre. Get off at the “Opéra” stop and follow Place de la République française and Rue de l’Université, which lead to Place du 20 août. Note that you can charge your MOBIB-card to pay your bus fares.

Attendance

Attendance is free of charge (this holds for members and non-members). If you want to give a lecture you must be a member of the LSB. This means that you have to be registered on the website and have paid your contribution --€ 40 if you wish to obtain the latest volume of the Belgian Journal of Linguistics for 2018, € 20 without.

Award

TAALDAG BKL 2018

Zoals elk jaar organiseert de BKL (Belgische Kring voor Linguïstiek) ook dit jaar een Taaldag. Deze zal plaatsvinden op vrijdag 25 mei 2018 aan de Faculté de Philosophie et Lettres van de Université de Liège.

Abstracts

Lezingen (20’ presentatie + 10’ discussie) mogen gaan over elk mogelijk taalkundig onderwerp en kunnen worden gepresenteerd in een van de drie landstalen (Nederlands, Frans, Duits) of in het Engels. Abstracts (max. 500 woorden, exclusief referenties) vermelden duidelijk het onderwerp, de doelstellingen, de gebruikte data en methode en de (voorlopige) resultaten. De abstracts (met vermelding van naam en affiliatie van de auteurs) dienen ten laatste op vrijdag 21 april 2018 ingediend te worden bij https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=cbl20180. U krijgt ten laatste op 1 mei antwoord van ons.

Comme chaque année, le CBL (Cercle Belge de Linguistique) organise une journée linguistique. Cette année la conférence aura lieu le vendredi 25 mai 2018 à la Faculté de Lettres et Philosophie de l’Université de Liège.

Propositions

Les communications (20’ de présentation + 10’ de discussion) peuvent traiter d’un sujet linguistique quelconque et peuvent se faire dans une des trois langues nationales (néerlandais, français, allemande) ou en anglais. Les propositions (max. 500 mots, sans références) doivent indiquer clairement le sujet, les objectifs, les données et la méthode utilisées ainsi que les résultats (provisoires). Toutes les propositions (avec le nom et l’affiliation des auteurs) peuvent être envoyées à https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=cbl20180, jusqu’au vendredi 21 avril 2018. Avant le 1 mai 2018 vous serez mis au courant de l’acceptation de votre proposition.

Toutes les activités (conférences et déjeuner) auront lieu dans le bâtiment principal (A1) du campus de la ville de l'Université de Liège. L'adresse est Place du 20 août, 4000 Liège. Il est à distance de marche de la gare de Liège-Palais. De la gare de Liège-Guillemins, prenez le bus (TEC) jusqu'à l'arrêt "Opéra", d'où vous pourrez rejoindre le bâtiment de l'université par la place de la République française et la rue de l'Université. Vous pouvez charger vos tickets TEC sur votre carte MOBIB (SNCB).

Participation

La participation à la journée linguistique est gratuite pour les membres ainsi que pour les non-membres. Ceux qui veulent faire une communication doivent être membres. Les nouveaux membres ont rempli la fiche d’adhésion et payé la cotisation -- € 40 pour ceux qui veulent obtenir le dernier volume du Belgian Journal of Linguistics pour l’année 2018, autrement € 20.

Comme l’année passée, cette année il y aura également un prix pour la meilleure présentation par un doctorant. Si vous désirez participer, vous devez le mentionner lors de la soumission de votre proposition.

Call for Papers

The Harvard Department of Celtic Languages & Literatures cordially invites proposals for papers on topics which relate directly to Celtic studies or Celtic languages and literatures in any phase; and papers on relevant cultural, historical or social science topics, theoretical perspectives, etc. for the 38th Annual Harvard Celtic Colloquium. Papers concerning interdisciplinary research with a Celtic focus are also invited.

The colloquium will take place at Harvard University on 5-7 October 2018.

Attendance is free. Presentations should be no longer than twenty minutes, with a short discussion period after each paper. Papers given at the Colloquium may later be submitted for consideration by the editorial committee for publication in the Proceedings of the Harvard Celtic Colloquium.

Potential presenters should submit a 200-250 word abstract and a brief biographical sketch. Submissions should be sent by e-mail to hcc@fas.harvard.edu. Please send submissions in the body of the email or as an attached Word Document.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION MOTIVATION AND TOPICS

There has recently been increased interest in modeling actions, as described by natural language expressions and gestures, and as depicted by images and videos. Additionally, action modeling has emerged as an important topic in robotics and HCI. The goal of this workshop is to gather and discuss advances in research areas in which actions are paramount e.g., virtual embodied agents, robotics, human-computer communication, document design, as well as modeling multimodal human-human interactions involving actions. Action modeling is an inherently multi-disciplinary area, involving contributions from computational linguistics, AI, semantics, robotics, psychology, and formal logic.

While there has been considerable attention in the community paid to the representation and recognition of events (e.g., the development of ISO-TimeML and associated specifications, and the 4 Workshops on “EVENTS: Definition, Detection, Coreference, and Representation”), the goals of this workshop are focused specifically on actions undertaken by embodied agents as opposed to events in the abstract. By concentrating on actions, we hope to attract those researchers working in computational semantics, gesture, dialogue, HCI, robotics, and other areas, in order to develop a community around action as a communicative modality where their work can be communicated and shared. This community will be a venue for the development and evaluation of resources regarding the integration of action recognition and processing in human-computer communication.

We invite submissions on foundational, conceptual, and practical issues involving modeling actions, as described by natural language expressions and gestures, and as depicted by images and videos. Relevant topics include but are not limited to:

- dynamic models of actions

- formal semantic models of actions

- affordance modeling

- manipulation action modeling

- linking multimodal descriptions and presentations of actions (image, text, icon, video)

- automatic action recognition from text, images, and videos

- communicating and performing actions with robots or avatars for joint tasks

Three types of submissions are invited:

- Research papers, describing original research; these can be either long (6-8 pages, not including references) or short (3-4 pages, not including references);

- Project notes, describing recent, ongoing or planned projects (2-4 pages including references);

- Demonstration notes, accompanying demonstration of software, tools, or systems (2-4 pages including references).

We will decide whether to have an oral or poster presentation, depending on reviewer suggestions and the overall workshop schedule.

Papers should be in compliance with the style sheet adopted for the LREC Proceedings. The AREA proceedings will be published in the LREC 2018 proceedings.

Papers should be submitted through the START conference manager set up for LREC 2018. When submitting a paper from the START page, authors will be asked to provide essential information about resources (in a broad sense, i.e. also technologies, standards, evaluation kits, etc.) that have been used for the work described in the paper or are a new result of your research. Moreover, ELRA encourages all LREC authors to share the described LRs (data, tools, services, etc.) to enable their reuse and replicability of experiments (including evaluation ones).

AIMS:

SLSP is a yearly conference series aimed at promoting and displaying excellent research on the wide spectrum of statistical methods that are currently in use in computational language or speech processing. It aims at attracting contributions from both fields. Though there exist large, well-known conferences and workshops hosting contributions to any of these areas, SLSP is a more focused meeting where synergies between subdomains and people will hopefully happen. In SLSP 2018, significant room will be reserved to young scholars at the beginning of their career and particular focus will be put on methodology.

The 1st workshop of Formal Reasoning and Semantics will be held at the Inter-University Center Dubrovnik (IUC) as a part of the 7th conference Logic and Applications (LAP 2018) 24-28 September 2018. The workshop is organized within the research project Formal Reasoning and Semantics (FORMALS) supported by Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ), UIP-2017-05-9219.


We have several 30 min slots available for contributed talks. All contributions which broadly fit the main goal of the project - mutual enrichment of pure and applied logic - are welcome, including, but not limited to, specific project topics listed below.


The emphasis of the project is on applications of logic in computer science, and vice versa, the application of computational tools in logical and mathematical research. Another goal is to apply logic to specific problems of linguistics or, more generally, cognitive and information sciences, as well as interdisciplinary areas in which economics and mathematics overlap (game theory, social choice theory). Even though logic is at the first glance a formal and theoretical discipline, logic is also exceptionally applicable, and it is surprising to see applications of the same or similar formal systems, especially modal logics, in a variety of areas. Formalization brings conceptual precision, clarity and confidence. Formalization also provides new insights of the complexity of problems and allows for discovery of new issues that remain hidden in informal reasoning.


The theoretical aspects of the project include:

1) exploring the expressive power of formal languages by methods of model theory

2) soundness and completeness, decidability and complexity of formal systems, especially modal logics

3) exploring the possibilities of developing an abstract theory of formal semantics.


Application aspects are:

1) development, research and formalization of mathematical models for problems of other disciplines

2) development and implementation of algorithms

3) detection of links between seemingly unrelated domains through related formalizations.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Graag vragen we jullie aandacht voor het 14e AWIA symposium dat we organiseren op 4-5 oktober 2018 aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. De buitenlandse gast die centraal staat tijdens de eerste dag van het symposium is Prof. Anssi Peräkylä (University of Helsinki), die heeft gekozen voor het volgende thema : ‘Psychotheraypy, psychiatry and emotions’. Anssi zal twee lezingen geven passend bij het thema en een datasessie leiden. De tweede dag is gereserveerd voor onderzoekspresentaties.

Bij dezen nodigen we Nederlandse en Vlaamse onderzoekers van harte uit een abstract in te dienen over interactie-/conversatieanalytisch onderzoek. We moedigen indieners aan om aan te sluiten bij het thema ‘Psychotheraypy, psychiatry and emotions’, maar ook andere onderwerpen zijn welkom. We bieden graag zowel beginnend als gevorderd onderzoekers een podium om hun (lopende) onderzoek te presenteren.

Abstracts hebben een maximum lengte van 500 woorden (inclusief eventuele data, exclusief referentielijst) en moeten in het Engels geschreven zijn. Om de gastspreker in staat te stellen deel te nemen aan de discussie is de voertaal tijdens het symposium Engels.

PSYCHOTHERAPY, PSYCHIATRY AND EMOTIONS

In the plenary presentations, I will be presenting conversation analytical studies on psychotherapy (presentation 1) and studies on emotion in interaction using combinations of conversation analytical and experimental methods (presentation 2). The data to be explored in the data session involves psychiatric intake interview.

The first presentation will lay out an overall view of conversation analytic (CA) study on psychotherapy. In a sociological perspective, psychotherapy is to be understood as a particular form of institutional interaction. The key characteristic of psychotherapy as institutional interaction arises from its particular inferential frameworks (see Drew and Heritage 1992: 21-25): the clients’ talk is understood beyond the speaker’s intended meaning, as indication of the particular (usually dysfunctional) ways of working of the patient’s mind (Peräkylä 2013). The goal of psychotherapy, accordingly, is to transform these ways of working of the mind in the client. In achieving that goal, psychotherapy is organized around sequences of actions, which can be characterized as being initiatory, responsive, or “third position” actions. CA studies have mostly focused on therapist’s actions, such as questions, formulations and interpretations. I will be arguing that through the sequences of actions, three transformation processes take place: the transformation of referents, emotions, and momentary relations between the participants. I will argue that these are key processes in enhancing therapeutic change in the patient. Key challenges for CA studies on psychotherapy will be discussed. One of them involves study designs that encompass long term processes extending the boundaries of single session. Another key challenge involves the understanding of interaction patterns pertaining to specific psychic disorders (such as depression, anxiety, or personality disorder). Finally, the contribution of CA on psychotherapy to CA studies on institutional interaction more generally will be discussed: particularly, I will argue that CA of psychotherapy highlights the importance of management of referents and the processes that go beyond single sequences and encounters, as targets of CA analysis.

The second presentation will give an overview of a string of studies on emotions in interaction using CA and experimental methods. In studies on facial expression, we have been exploring how facial expressions are coordinated with the initiation and completion of turns at talk, doing work to initiate, enhance or transform the emotional stances that are being conveyed by the speakers. In studies on emotion in psychotherapy, we have explored the different combinations of empathy and challenge in therapists’ responses to patients’ emotional expressions and narratives. For example, prosodic matching and mismatching between the patient’s and the therapist’s talk anticipatorily conveys either empathy or challenge by the therapist, in relation to the patient’s emotion descriptions. In a set of experimental studies, we have explored the ways in which the expressed stance of stories, and the affiliation displayed by the story recipients, are linked to the autonomous nervous system responses in the participants. These studies have uncovered linkages between the “interaction order”, and the physiological processes in the participants, thus elaborating Goffmanian view of interaction.

The data session will focus on psychiatric assessment interviews in an outpatient clinic. The data are in Finnish. The goal of psychiatric assessment is to define the patient’s diagnosis and treatment plan. In discussing diagnosis, the roles of the clinician and the patient seem to be different from what they are in somatic medicine: in the psychiatric assessment, the clinician seems to encourage and solicit patient participation in discussion on diagnosis, in ways that are rather rare in somatic medicine.

Regulations are a widespread and important part of governments and businesses.

They encode how products are manufactured, and how the processes are to be performed. Such regulations, in general, are difficult to understand and apply.

Undoubtedly, the law, for example, as the reflection of human society, presents the broadest range of expression and interpretation, since the interpretation of even the most common words becomes problematic. Even individual regulations may be self-contradictory as a result of their gradual development process, as well as the lack of a formal drafting process.


In an increasingly complicated environment, as well as regulatory review, automated reasoning processes become more and more necessary. Current state-of-the-art technologies enforce reasoning applications on legal texts such as decision making and compliance checking starting from logical and/or ontology-based representations of norms. These semantic representations are typically obtained via Natural Language Processing (NLP) in an automatic fashion, in order to avoid huge time-consuming manual effort.


To bridge such challenges, several research projects in the legal domain have been recently funded by the EU and similar institutions, among which is

"MIREL: MIning and REasoning with Legal texts". The aim of the MIREL project is to bridge the gap between the community working on legal ontologies and NLP methods applied to legal documents, and the community working on reasoning methods and formal logic, towards the objectives described above.


This special issue focuses on legal reasoning, thus welcoming submissions describing novel approaches for reasoning in the legal domain starting from logical or ontology-based representations of legal knowledge.


A non-exhaustive list of topics includes:


- Logical formalization of legal knowledge

- Norm enforcement and compliance

- Decision making methods and applications

- Computational methods for legal reasoning

- Legal argumentation

- Dynamics of normative knowledge

- Formal models of norms, normative systems, and norm-governed societies

- Inconsistency handling and exception-tolerant reasoning

The dataset contains human-machine dialogues in both English and Japanese:

615 English dialogues and 150 Japanese dialogues. All system utterances are annotated with dialogue breakdown labels by 30 annotators.


The data can be useful to those working on dialogue systems as well as those who want to analyze psychological aspects of dialogue; e.g., how users perceive human-machine interaction.
