Elma Blom is universitairhoofddocent bij de afdeling Orthopedagogiek van de Universiteit Utrecht enproject-leider van het NWO Vidi project Cognitive Development in the Context ofEmerging Bilingualism (CoDEmBi) en het Dynamics of Youth project Linguistic Aspects of Texting and its influence oncognitive and social development (LATXTICS). Haar onderzoek enpublicaties richten zich op de parallelle ontwikkeling van meerdere talen,taalontwikkelingsstoornis, de relatie tussentaalontwikkeling en cognitieve ontwikkeling en de verbetering van dediagnostiek bij meertalige kinderen. In haar onderzoek werkt zesamen met collega’s aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, Fryske Akademy enUniversiteit Maastricht, enmet Kentalis en Auris. Ze is betrokken bijde Europese COST actie ‘Language Impairment in a Multilingual Society’ enis action editor van het Journal of ChildLanguage.
De laatste decennia is hetsteeds duidelijker geworden dat het taalaanbod van invloed is op detaalontwikkeling van kinderen. Dit roept vragen op over detaalontwikkeling van meertalige kinderen omdat hun taalaanbod is verdeeld overmeerdere talen. Kinderen groeienbijvoorbeeld op in een thuisomgeving waar een andere taal dan het Nederlandswordt gesproken, de beide ouders spreken allebei eenverschillende taal met hun kind of beide ouders gebruiken alle talen doorelkaar heen. In deze lezing gaat Elma inop twee vragen die logopedisten die te maken hebben met meertalige kinderenhaar vaak stellen. Ten eerste: Maakt het uit ofouders de talen scheiden of mengen? Het antwoord op deze vraag is van belang vooradviezen aan ouders. Ten tweede: Zijn de gevolgenvan meertaligheid (door minder taalaanbod) te onderscheiden van de gevolgen vaneen taalontwikkelingsstoornis?
Aan de hand van recentonderzoek zal Elma een aantal suggesties geven voor ondersteunende diagnostiekbij meertalige kinderen.

Launch of the new Language LearningResource Centre (LLRC) – June 9th 2017
At Leiden University, 20 languages are taught acrossdifferent institutes and at different educational programs. Additionally,researchers on second/foreign language acquisition and teacher trainers residein different institutes. The new Language Learning Resource Centre (LLRC) willunite all these language teaching professionals. At June 9th 2017, the LLRC will officiallystart. This launch will be celebrated by a full day of talks and exchanges ofideas.
The day will start with a talk by Prof. Claudia Harsch,academic director of Fremdsprachenzentrum in Bremen (which unites not onlylanguage teaching professionals of one but of multiple universities). She willinspire us to build a successful centre in The Netherlands. Prof. NorbertSchmitt (Nottingham University) will talk about teaching and testing vocabularyfrom a research perspective. The presentations in between these two invitedtalks will be held by language teachers and language researchers from LeidenUniversity. After Prof. Schmitt’s presentation, all attendants are invited tocelebrate the opening of the LLRC with a drink and a bite.

Workshop: Revising formal semantic and pragmatic theories from a neurocognitive perspective

Over the last few decades we have observed a growing interest in using experimental methods to investigate semantic and pragmatic theories. Experimental pragmatics has become a flourishing interdisciplinary research area. Aside from behavioral methods, such as reaction time measurement, eye-tracking and acceptability judgments, researchers have become increasingly interested in investigating language processing at the neural level and by this means shedding more light on semantic and pragmatic theories. To this end, they have employed techniques such as electroencephalography (EEG), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), magnetoencephalography (MEG) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Although this enterprise has resulted in a large amount of interesting data about linguistic processing, the interpretation of these results remains debated with respect to their relevance for more formal theories of meaning. On the one hand, it often is difficult to formulate clear processing predictions for semantic and pragmatic theories, on the other hand, the theoretical interpretation of the activations observed with neuroimaging tools is not fully understood. As a result, the neurolinguistics and formal semantic/pragmatic communities remain still rather disjoint. In this workshop we would like to bridge the gap and discuss the challenges of combining the two approaches.

The notion of iconicity is rapidly gaining influenceacross the language sciences as a factor in explanations and models of languagestructure, language learning, language processing, and language evolution. Witha remarkable increase in the number of studies wielding the term ‘iconicity’there is a growing need to specify and investigate the notion of iconicityitself across modalities (speech, sign, and gesture). The aim of this workshopis to provide conceptual clarity and empirical evidence on the nature oficonicity and its role in language use, development, and processing. Thefield of developmental cognitive neuroscience has made great progress over thepast decades. To take it to the next level will require codification,innovation and further integration of experimental methodologies and quantitativeaspects of data interpretation. The current summer school will acquaintstudents with a number of methods frequently applied in brain, cognition andbehaviour research with infants and toddlers. Specifically, it will sensitizestudents to issues regarding reliability, replicability, and validity, and havethem explore how these issues relate to general and specific susceptibilitiesof current techniques and quantitative methods.

This is a branch of artificial intelligencecovering a spectrum of current exciting machine learning research andindustrial innovation that provides more efficient algorithms to deal withlarge-scale data in neuroscience, computer vision, speech recognition, languageprocessing, drug discovery, biomedical informatics, recommender systems,learning theory, robotics, games, etc. Renowned academics and industry pioneerswill lecture and share their views with the audience.
Most deep learning subareas will be displayed, and main challenges identifiedthrough 4 keynote lectures, 30 six-hour courses, and 1 round table, which willtackle the most active and promising topics. The organizers are convinced thatoutstanding speakers will attract the brightest and most motivated students.Interaction will be a main component of the event. An open session will giveparticipants the opportunity to present their own work in progress in 5minutes.
In principle, graduate students, doctoral students and postdocs will be typicalprofiles of participants. However, there are no formal pre-requisites forattendance in terms of academic degrees. Since there will be a variety oflevels, specific knowledge background may be assumed for some of the courses.DeepLearn 2017 is also appropriate for more senior academics and practitionerswho want to keep themselves updated on recent developments and future trends.All will surely find it fruitful to listen and discuss with major researchers,industry leaders and innovators.

Many cognitive scientiststhink of computation as a metaphor for thinking about the mind, whereas othersconsider it a tool for calculating the implications of models. However, neitherperspective fully expresses how computation can serve as the foundationaltheory of how people actively process information in service of control anddecision making. By providing a precise means for expressing theories ofdynamic systems, computation provides the most promising means of explaininghow the human mind, in all of its richness and diversity, can exist in thephysical universe. If this promise is to be fulfilled, then greater effort mustbe made to connect cognitive science theories to computational foundations.

The aim of this workshop is to bring women undergraduateand masters students, who are currently working in speech science andtechnology, together at a special event co-located with Interspeech 2017,Stockholm, Sweden. The workshop will take place on 20 August 2017 from 10am to5pm followed by a dinner with invited senior members of the Interspeechcommunity. It will feature panel discussions with senior female researchers inthe field, student poster presentations and a mentoring session.
The workshop is the second of its kind, after asuccessful inaugural event (YFRSW 2016)at Interspeech 2016 in San Francisco. It is designed to foster interest inresearch in our field in women at the undergraduate or master level who havenot yet committed to getting a PhD in speech science or technology areas, butwho have had some research experience in their college and universities viaindividual or group projects.

A successful methodological assumption underlying muchsociolinguistic, dialectological, and diachronic linguistic work has been thatthe variation we find between speakers is not random, but reflectssociological, historical, geographical, physiological and other differences inthe outside world, and is bounded by universal aspects of the human body andmind. In recent years, formal linguistics, traditionally putting a large burdenof explanation on theories of the human mind, has extended its focus to explainingat least some aspects of the variational patterns – both the question what thelimits of variation are, and what explains why certain variants are found incertain places, among certain groups, at certain periods.
In this workshop, we aim at bringing together researcherswho are working on a better understanding of the patterns of variation – on amap, or on the time line – from the prism of syntactic, morphological andphonological theories: why, for instance, are certain linguistic phenomena foundexclusively on areas close to important isoglosses? Why do certain linguisticchanges tend to co-occur? How is it possible that speakers' intuitions aboutgrammaticality seem to correspond to the distribution of the different variantswithin a community? How can we capture inclusion relations among linguisticregions, especially when they show exceptions? How do we understand thephenomenon of 'drift' where a certain grammatical well-formedness change takescenturies to play out?
On August 24-26, researchers of the NWO-sponsored projectMaps & Grammar organize a workshop on these topics within phonology andsyntax. Although most speakers will be either participants in the project orinvited international experts on the topic, there are a few spots also forother talks and for posters. Studies for this projectwill adopt a contemporary approach to studying language development, usinglinguistic stimuli created to closely match the distributional properties ofthe native language of the infants tested, as indicated by corpus analysis.This project will require testing infants at different ages, with thepossibility to test a cohort of infants longitudinally for some studies.
Candidates should have, or be willingto develop, knowledge of EEG/fNIRS. An interest in distributional learning isalso desirable for this post.
Position 2:Environmental influences on early lexical development
The goal of this project is toidentify which aspects of infants' daily experience and environment cruciallyimpact infants' early word learning; those factors include (but are not limitedto) screen use, family structure (such as the presence of older siblings), anddaycare arrangements. Further, infants' non-linguistic abilities (mostprominently processing speed) will be related to their linguistic developmentand possible susceptibility/resilience to environmental differences.
This project will entailexperimental studies of infants' lexical knowledge (including eye-tracking) aswell as automated recordings and questionnaire-based assessments of bothinfants' development and their environment. Candidates should have, or bewilling to develop, knowledge of these methods.
For both posts, candidates should have, or shortly expect toobtain, a good undergraduate degree and a high quality Research Master’s degree(or equivalent) in a subject that is related to, or can be applied to, languagedevelopment (e.g. Psychology, Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, etc.). Your Master’s degree ideally willhave involved several months of experience and training on a scientificproject. Further, experience working with children, conducting psychologicalstudies, and analyzing experimental data will be an advantage. Native-like knowledgeof Dutch is crucial since you will be testing young Dutch-learningparticipants. In addition, since the business of the institute is conducted inEnglish, candidates should have excellent written and spoken command of thislanguage.
Both PhD positions are funded for 4 years, and salary willbe determined by the TVöD scale (starting salary: EUR 2,230.99 per month beforetax). The Language Development Department provides fully equipped researchfacilities and technical support, as well as research support, conference andtravel budgets.
All PhD students in the Department participate in theInternational Max Planck Research School, which involves both core andindividually chosen coursework to complement the PhD research, in addition totraining in soft skills such as writing and presentation.

The international, cross-linguistic collaboration “Language Abilities in Children with Autism” (LACA) invites postdoc fellows to apply together for postdoc funding in the context of the Marie Sklodowska Curie Individual fellowship scheme for Standard EF (European Fellows).
European Fellowships are open to researchers currently within or outside Europe who want to work in an EU Member State or Associated Country (MS or AC). The mobility rule applies to the MS or AC (i.e. the researcher must not have lived, worked, or studied in the MS or AC for more than 12 months during the 3 years prior to the deadline). The duration of the fellowship is 12 to 24 months and primarily covers the salary of the researcher (plus family allowance). Applicants either hold a PhD degree or have at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience at the moment of the deadline.
The LACA network will offer support during the application procedure to candidates who would like to spend their Marie S. Curie fellowship at one of the LACA labs. For a description of participating organisations, see below. Secondments of up to 6 months to a second LACA lab are possible. In case of funding, the postdoc fellow will become a member of the LACA collaboration, receiving training and potential opportunities for further continuation of their international scientific career.

The annual Anéla conference will take place on September 22, 2017. The theme of this year is Multilingualism, Language Acquisition and Language Proficiency. This theme includes, but is not limited to, Second-Language Acquisition, Second Language Teaching, Bilingual Education, Native Language Proficiency, Professional Communication Skills, and Language Teacher Training. We cordially invite you to submit a proposal for a contribution.
The Anéla one day conference is hosted by is an institute that trains teachers this year. Therefore we particularly encourage teachers-in-training (that is, Master students and Research Master students from both academic and higher educational teacher trainings) to submit an abstract for a (poster)presentation about their research.
You can opt for three different presentation formats:
a) presentation (25 minutes, including 5 minutes for discussion)
b) presentation (like option a, with an added slot of 25 minutes for discussion)
c) poster (a poster presentation includes a one minute pitch-presentation.)
Option b) is meant for topics that are suitable for discussion, for example recent developments, policy, and new lines of research. If you choose this option, please indicate in the abstract what the discussion roughly will be about.
To facilitate in-depth discussion, participants of the discussion will be required to attend the presentation first (however, it will be possible to attend the presentation only and leave before the discussion). This will be announced in the program.
Abstracts in Dutch or English are both welcome. The language of the abstract is also the language of the presentation.

Workshop organizers are responsible for advertising the workshop, organizing the reviewing process, and running the workshop.

We invite contributions for the workshop “Cognitive explanations in
linguistic typology: contemporary insights from language processing and language acquisition“ to be held at the 12th Conference of the Association for Linguistic Typology (ALT) at the Australian National University in Canberra on December 15, 2017.
The potential of language processing mechanisms to explain diachronic developments and grammatical patterns in the world’s languages has long been recognized in the typological literature. However, processing pressures and constraints have often been invoked as vague processes instead of as observable behaviour and neural activity that may be amenable to empirical measurement and evaluation. Given the degree of maturity achieved by contemporary psycho- and neurolinguistics, a new era of a cross-disciplinary pollination between linguistic typology and these disciplines is warranted. This workshop will focus on processing explanations for the distribution and development of typological features, drawing on experimental work on language comprehension, language production and first language acquisition. The emphasis will lie on explanations that are theoretically well-grounded from a psycholinguistic and/or neurolinguistic perspective and that are empirically testable.
