Credit Assignment

During their studies, RM students can earn 10 EC with LOT by typically doing a one-week Winter school with RM1 courses and a two-week school with regular courses.

An RM1 course is worth 2.5 EC. RM1 students can take up to two RM1 courses and do the corresponding assignments during the Winter School for 5 EC in total for both courses.

A Regular course is worth 1 EC. RM2 students can take up to three regular courses per school, and optionally write a paper for one of these courses for an extra 2 EC.

PhD students are advised to take no more than two courses a week during a LOT school.

Participants receive a LOT certificate with corresponding ECTS per course upon completion of all requirements (i.e. preparation, participation on all 5 days and a pass for all given assignments). If these requirements are not met, LOT will not issue a certificate.

Scientific mission of LOT

The aim of LOT is to create a scientific community in which this research can be optimally pursued, and to educate the next generation of researchers with an open mind toward new disciplinary and interdisciplinary developments, theoretical and methodological alternatives, and possible applications.

LOT stimulates new initiatives and developments in research, and provides a national forum to further communication between the participating institutes with a view to short- and long-term collaboration.

LOT School Series

LOT was officially established in June 1994 by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. The LOT school series soon acquired an international reputation as a result of inviting well-known linguists to teach at the schools.

The research by the LOT institutes covers all major areas of linguistics, and exploits a wide range of methodological tools and theoretical frameworks.
