Amongst other academic learning goals in higher education and school language programs, both content knowledge and language skills play a prominent role. Students of a French language and culture program, for instance, follow courses to enhance their French language proficiency, and at the same time, they follow courses of French linguistics and literature. In such settings, assessing communicative competence should fit the larger goal of the program and assessments on language may involve relevant content knowledge. The language assessment specialist knows how to assess language and the literature, science or economics specialist knows how to evaluate the content. But what are the issues surrounding the interface between the two? How and when does the language influence scores in content areas? And, equally, how and when does content knowledge impact scores on language assessments.
About the event
In this roundtable discussion and workshop, we will discuss how teachers in a language and content integrated context negotiate the relationship between language and content in their (speaking) assessment. We will first hear different perspectives on the challenges of assessing speaking and/or content in different settings. We also wish to provide an opportunity for participants to explore shared knowledge amongst language practitioners in similar settings which is why part of the event will be run as a workshop.
We invite content and language specialists as well as researchers and practitioners in contexts where language and content interact, such as CLIL and EMI to share their experience and to exchange ideas with a view to moving our understanding of the issues forward.
