The Department of Communication and Cognition in the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences is looking for enthusiastic colleagues for the position of Assistant Professor.

Language, Communication and Cognition

The candidates are expected to initiate and conduct fundamental and applied research in the research program Language, Communication and Cognition (LCC). LCC explores cognitive and social aspects of human communication through a multidisciplinary approach, combining careful experimentation with survey methods, corpus analyses and computational modeling. Core research domains include communication and technology, cross-cultural communication, social media research, language production, information visualiation and design, strategic communication and non-verbal communication. The candidates are expected to develop new lines of research fitting in the program, preferably with an emphasis on new media or communicative technologies (e.g., on how they affect cognition or behaviour.)

Moreover, the candidates contribute (both in terms of teaching and organisation) to one of the leading programmes in the Netherlands in Communication and Information Sciences (CIS). With the new positions, we seek to strengthen in particular the specialisation New Media Design (NMD). NMD focusses on the discipline of human-computer / computer-human interaction (HCI and CHI) and the associated technological developments. The track emphasises on analysis and design of new media technologies, with topics including the psychology of human-media interaction, creativity, human-centered design methods, experience and interaction design, prototyping, usability evaluation, (interactive) storytelling, virtual /mixed reality, interactive visualisation, gamification. New colleagues are expected to contribute to one or more of these topics in teaching.

Application Process

Applications should include a cover letter in English, a Curriculum Vitae (including two references), and a statement on the candidate’s contribution to the research program LCC and the teaching program CIS.

Deadline

The application deadline is April 20. 2019. Positions are open until filled. The only way to apply is online via the Tilburg University website.

Scientific mission of LOT

The aim of LOT is to create a scientific community in which this research can be optimally pursued, and to educate the next generation of researchers with an open mind toward new disciplinary and interdisciplinary developments, theoretical and methodological alternatives, and possible applications.

LOT stimulates new initiatives and developments in research, and provides a national forum to further communication between the participating institutes with a view to short- and long-term collaboration.

LOT School Series

LOT was officially established in June 1994 by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. The LOT school series soon acquired an international reputation as a result of inviting well-known linguists to teach at the schools.

The research by the LOT institutes covers all major areas of linguistics, and exploits a wide range of methodological tools and theoretical frameworks.
